arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

alṟu (p. 28) கிறேன், அலறினேன், வேன், அலற, v. n. To cry out, vociferate, roar with grief, pain, &c., bellow as a cow for its calf, கதற. 2. To scream, make an unnatural sound in crying, வீரிட. 3. To sing with a grating, harsh or unmusical sound, வெடிப்பாயொலிக்க. (c.) 19)

An assumed indifference, &c. in one who has done wrong and conceals it, sang froid, பிடி கொடாமை. இடங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give place, yield, admit. 2. To allow, permit, suffer, grant liberty, permission. இடங்கொள்ள, inf. To take up room, இடம்பிடிக்க. 2. To be spacious, capacious, விசாலமாயிருக்க. இடங்கொள்பூதலம். The wide-spread earth. To seek or find a place, a situation, an opportunity. இடம்புரி, s. A conch, a species of shell from which bangles, or handrings are cut, சங்கு. 2. A left hand shell, இடம்புரிச்சங்கு. 3. A species of medicinal plant forming a drug, ஓர்பூடு. 4. A rope twisted to the left, இடப்பக்க மாகமுறுக்கியகயிறு. இடவகை, s. A house, வீடு. (சது.) 2. Local affinity. இடவழு, s. [in grammar.] The wrong use of one person for another. இடவன், s. [prov.] The left ox in the yoke, இடம்பூண்டவெருது. 2. The fellow or mate in a yoke of oxen, கூட்டெ ருது. இடவாகுபெயர், s. A kind of metonymy-as the place for that which is in it, ஆகுபெயர்களிலொன்று. இடவோட்டம், s. The left-hand passage--spoken of the imaginary planets, இராகுகேது இடப்புறமோடல். 2. ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

ovvu (p. 84) கிறது, ஒவ்வினது, ம், ஒவ்வ, v. n. To agree, to be congruous, consistent, to be fit, பொருந்த. ஒவ்வாக்கூட்டிலுந்தனிமையழகு. Solitude is preferable to bad society. ஒவ்வாப்பேச்சுவசையோடொக்கும். An unmerited eulogy is tantamount to a censure. ஒவ்வாப்பக்கம், s. [in logic.] An unnatural comparison or simile, an incongruity or impossibility, பொருந்தாத பட்சம். ஒவ்வாமை, neg. v. noun. Unfitness, unsuitableness, incompatibleness, தகா மை. 2. Unlikeness, non-conformity, பொ ருந்தாமை. 3. Discord, disagreement, disharmony, இசையாமை. 4. Impracticability, absurdity, impossibility, இயலாமை. ஒவ்வுற, inf. To agree with, to be like, பொருத்தமுற. இதற்கொவ்வுறாதால். None is equal to this. (பார.) 5)

kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Alum, சீனக் காரம். கடுஞ்சூடு, s. Great heat, அதிகசூடு. கடுஞ்செட்டு, s. Unfair traffic, trading at an exorbitant profit. கடுஞ்செய்கை, s. A cruel or wicked deed, கொடியகிரியை. கடுஞ்சொல், s. A severe word, a harsh expression, a reprimand, கொடுஞ் சொல். கடுதலைமுடிச்சு, s. [prov. prop. க டைதலைமுடிச்சு.] A treacherous contrivance, perfidy. கடுநடை, s. A tiresome walk, hard walking, a hard walk. கடுநெருப்பு, s. A fierce fire, a fire too large or too powerful for the occasion--as for culinary or chemical purposes. கடுந்தரை, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s. Weapons of warfare, யுத்தாயுதப்பொது. கடுமூர்க்கம், s. Great fury, vehement anger, அதிகமூர்க்கம். கடுமூர்க்கன், s. A furious man. கடும்பச்சை, s. A curious green stone, நாகப்பச்சை. கடும்பத்தி, s. Rigorous devotion, earnest excessive zeal, மிகுபத்தி. கடும்பத்தியம், s. A strict diet, கண் டிப்பானபத்தியம். கடும்புலி, s. A ferocious tiger, கொடும்புலி. கடும்புளிப்பு, s. Excessive sourness, அதிகபுளிப்பு. கடுவட்டி, s. Excessive interest, usury, அதிகவட்டி. கடுவழி, s. A rugged way, கடுமை யானவழி. கடுவிலை, s. An exorbitant price, அதிகவிலை. கடுவெயில், s. A burning sun, அதி கவெயில். கடுவெளி, s. A dry extensive plain or open space, free from trees, &c., a vast expanse, பெருவெளி. 2)

kuṭl (p. 116) s. Bowels, entrails, intestines, garbage, குடர்--Note. இரைக்குடல், கல்லுக்கு டல், சிறுகுடல், தீனிக்குடல், பெருங்குடல்மணிக் குடல், மலக்குடல்--are different kinds of குடல் (See those words.) 2. A kind of fungous matter in the hollow of gourds, &c. காய்குடல். 3. Pith in the body of trees, மரக்குடல். 4. Streaks running down the interrior of plantains and other fruits, பழக்குடல். குடலதிருகிறது. The bowels tremble. குடலுங்கூந்தலுங்கொண்டதுகோலம். The bowels and the hair must be treated as accustomed. குடலழுகினபூசனிக்காய். A pumpkin, the internal part of which is rotten. குடல்கொழுத்தது. The bowels are grown fatty; causing a bad appetite--also exciting pride. குடலெரிகின்றது. The bowels are yearn. குடலேறிக்கொண்டுது. The bowels are twisted or deranged--as by assuming an unnatural position. குடலொட்டிக்கழிய. To have a flux from noxious matter in the bowels; to have a severe and copious discharge at stool. குடலேற்றம், s. Twisting or derangement of the bowels, See ஏற்றம். குடல்மாலை, s. The folds or turnings of the bowels. குடல்வலி, s. Aching pains in the bowels, caused often by continued hunger. குடல்வாதம், s. A disease causing flatulency and frequent watery discharges. குடல்கவ்வு, s. The omentum, caul. குடற்பிரிவு, v. noun. [prov.] A dislodgment of the bowels. குடற்புரை, s. The orifice of the bowels. குடற்பை--குடற்போர்வை, s. The womb, uterus. குடலறவோட, inf. To run very fast so as to cause the bowels to pant; lit. loosen or part. குடலைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To draw out the entrails. 2. (metoph.) To heave, retch, nauseate. குடல்காய்தல், v. noun. Drying of the intestines--being without food: starving. 31)

cangkaram (p. 155) s. Mixture, promiscuousness--as of castes by indiscriminate commerce, &c., கலப்பு. W. p. 879. S'ANKARA. 2. War, fighting, battle, போர். W. p. 881. SANGARA. சங்கரசாதி, s. A mixed race of the higher and lower castes. (c.)--Note. The assertion may be ventured, that no Hindu of the present age is a pure, unadulterated descendant of either of the four principal castes recognised in Menu a Institutes. Consult the ancient poems of Ramayana and Bharata on this point. The adulteration of caste may result according to the Ramayana, from personal conduct as well as from birth. சங்கரர், s. cvḷu (p. 171) --சவள், கிறேன், சவண்டேன், வேன், சவள, v. n. To bend, to warp, to be supple, வளைய. 2. To be flexible, as the arms of a fencer, &c., துவள. 3. To be bent--as a limb; to be forced unnaturally --as a bone, &c, துவட்டப்பட. (c.) சவண்டுகொடுக்க, inf. To yield, as any thing flexible. சவள்தடி, s. A flexible stick. 2. (prov.) Tribe, caste, race, குலம். 6. [in gram.] General classification of nouns, pronouns and verbs as உயர்திணை. rational, and அஃறிணை, irrational. 7. Prescribed or regular course of conduct, ஒழுக் கம். 8. Soil, land, of which are five varieties, ஐந்திணை. 9. [in love poetry.] General intercourse of the sexes, as love attachments, love quarrels, &c., பெருந்திணை. ஐந்திணை, s. The five species of land are: 1. குறிஞ்சி, hilly tracts. 2. பாலை. desert, arid tracts. 3. முல்லை, sylvan tracts. 4. மருதம், agricultural tracts. 5. நெய்தல், maritime tracts.--Note. The varieties in love are seven, of which five are taken from the names of the species of land above mentioned, viz.: 1. கைக்கிளை. 2. குறிஞ்சி; 3. பாலை; 4. முல்லை; 5. மருதம், for which, see அகப்பொருள். To these are added; 6. நெய்தல், the lady bemoaning her lover's absence; 7. பெ ருந்திணை, unnatural castes; disparity in age--as the wife being the elder, violation of customary rules; also love disasters, marriage feuds, &c. The last is considered inadmissible in love poetry. திணைப்பெயர், s. Names of the five soils. திணைமயக்கம், s. Blending of different soils. 2.
