āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. To render aid--as to a sick person, to help one in distress, துன்புற்றோ ரைக்காக்க. 3. To console, ஆற்ற. ஆற்றுவிக்க, inf. [causal.] To console, cherish, afford consolation, தணி யச்செய்ய. 2. kr (p. 96) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To conceal, hide, cloak, cover, disguise, ஒளித்துவைக்க. 2. To steal, pilfer, plunder. திருட. 3. To be niggardly, to withhold, refuse to give, &c., கொடாதிருக்க. 4. v. n. To abscond, hide one's self, ஒளித்துக் கொள்ள. 5. To be unseen, be invisible, hidden--as a spirit, மறைய. (p.) கரவாதுவந்தீயுங்கண்ணன்னார். Those dear as one's eyes who never refuse to bestow their gifts-- (குறள்.) கரந்துறைகோள், s. Unseen planets. கரந்துறைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem so constructed as to conceal another poem within it, மிறைக்கவியிலொன்று. கரப்பு, v. noun. Stealing, pilfering. 2. Hiding, concealing. 3. Refusal, denial, withholding. கரவு, v. noun. Concealment, hiding, cloaking, sang froid, assumed or pretended ignorance, ஒளித்தல். 2. Stealing, theft, deception, subtlety, craft, insidiousness, களவு. கரவாகநிற்கிறான். He is insincere, hides something in his heart, is in alliance with the foe while pretending friendship. நெஞ்சிற்கரவுடையார்தம்மைக்கரப்பர். Those who are insincere will hide themselves. (மூதுரை.) கரவர்--கரவோர், s. Thieves, தி ருடர். 2. Deceivers, crafty persons, வஞ் சகர். (p.) 55) *

kārakam (p. 104) s. Agency, causality, causation, காரணத்துவம். 2. Means, instrument, expedient, &c., to accomplish an action, கருவி. 3. A doing, an action, செயல். 4. [in grammar.] The agent, the subject of a verb, வினைமுதல். 5. The cases of nouns depending in construction on verbs, and not on nouns, வினைகொண்டுவேற்றுமை முடிவது. Wils. p. 213. KARAKA. The six grammatical காரகம் are: 1. கருத்தாகாரகம், nominative case to a verb--as சாத்தன்சேர்ந்தான். 2. கருமகாரகம், objective case, governed by a verb--as சாத்தானைச்சேர்ந்தான். 3. கருவிகாரகம், instrumental ablative, followed by a verb-as வாளால்வெட்டினான். 4. கோளிக்காரகம், dative case, depending on a verb--as சாத்தானுக்குக் கொடுத்தான். 5. அவதிக்காரகம், ablative of motion--as சாத்தனிற்பிரிந்தான். 6. இடக்காரகம், local ablative--as சாத்தனிடஞ்சென்றான். காரகக்கருவி, s. Any of the காரகவேது, in operation, as distinguished from ஞாபகக்கருவி. காரகத்துணைக்கருவி, s. Instruments, &c.--as the wheel of the potter, தொழிற் றுணைக்காரணம். காரகநிமித்தக்கருவி, s. The agent of an action, செய்கையின்நிமித்தகாரணம். காரகமுதற்கருவி, s. The proximate cause--as the clay for a pot, செய்கையின் முதற்காரணம். காரகவேது, s. The three causes in the performance of an action, as காரகக் கருவி. 2. [in rhetoric.] Assigning extraordinary causes in accounting for an event; one of the two kinds of ஏதுவலங் காரம், the other being ஞாபகவேது. காரகன், s. To arise, come into being, begin to exist, தோன்ற. 5. The spring forth, to shoot up, முளைக்க. (சது.) நாறுகரந்தை, s. Sweet basil. See கரந் தை. நாறல், v. noun. Stinking; being offensive in smell, corrupt, or putrid. 2. A stinking thing, a stench, நாற்றமுடையது. நாறற்சரீரம், s. The vile body. நாறற்சோறு, s. Stale and spoiled rice. நாறற்சோற்றுக்குப்பதம்பார்ப்பானேன். Why taste spolied rice; i. e. why take pains to improve what is past recovery? நாறற்பாக்கு, s. Areca-nut soaked to improve the taste till the husk begins to purify. நாறல்மீன், s. Spoiled fish, stinking fish. நாறல்வாயன், s. A person with stinking breath. 2. (fig.) One who uses obscene language. நாறல்வாயன்தேடக் கர்ப்பூரவாயன் கைக்கொண் டான். What the stinking mouthed (the miser) has sought, the camphor mouthed (the benevolent) has obtained. 45)
