ammu (p. 21) கிறேன், அம்மினேன், வேன், அம்ம, v. n. To dissemble on hearing a thing spoken of by seeming to know nothing of it, to act with reserve and duplicity wanting ingenuousness, மாரீசம் பண்ண. 2. கிறது, அம்மினது, ம், அம்ம. [prov. impr. for பம்பு.] To cover thickly as a mass of motionless clouds, overspreading the heavens, obscuring the rays of the sun, &c., மூட. 3. To feel the sensation of weight in the head, as the effect of cold, தலைகனக்க. அம்முக்கள்ளன், s. A cheat, a fraudulent fellow, one who is void of honest principles, one that is a rogue within. 33)

aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. il (p. 55) . Not, non-existence, death, மரணம். (p.) 2. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. An impossibility, an absurdity, இல்லாதபொருள். இல்பொருளுவமம்--இல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)

iḷai (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To tire, grow weary, be fatigued, exhausted, to languish, தொய்ய. 2. To grow emaciated, be lean, meagre, &c., மெலிய. 3. To be worn out with age, sickness, &c., to become decrepit, தளர. 4. To become poor, be worn out--as land by continued cultivation, want of manure, &c., சக்திகுறைய. 5. To grow weak and wanting in luxuriance or fruitfulness--as trees, rice, &c., to fade--as a color, வளங்குறைய. 6. To fail before a foe or rival, to yield to superior force, தோற்க. ஒருத்தனுக்கொருத்தனிளையான். One is not inferior to the other, one will not yield to the other (they will fight till they die, except they to parted). இளைத்தோய, inf. To be exhausted from over-exertion. இளைப்பு, v. noun. Weariness, fatigue, exhaustion, faintness, மெலிவு. இளைப்பறுதி, s. Recruiting, recovery from fatigue. இளைப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be wearied. இளைப்பாற, inf. To rest, take rest, repose, இளைப்புத்தணிய. இளைப்பாறுமண்டபம், s. A room for rest or repose--1. For idols after a procession, before they are set in the usual place. 2. For kings, or other distinguished personages after journey. to wash their feet, &c. before entering their house, வசந்தமண்டபம். இளைப்பாற்ற, inf. To refresh, cause to rest, show civilities, &c. to travellers or weary persons, இளைப்பொழிக்க. வழியிளைப்பாற்ற, inf. To entertain and refresh travellers, offering them a seat, water to wash their feet, fanning them, &c. மன்றலந்தென்றல்வீசி வழியிளைப்பாற்றினாளே. She (the Ganges) refreshed them by causing the fragrant south wind to blow. (பாரதம்.) இளைப்பாற்றி, s. Rest, resting, repose, cessation, இளைப்புத்தணிகை. இளைப்புற, inf. To be fatigued, to grow weary. 10)

utṭu (p. 59) s. Lip, lips, இதழ். 2. (fig.) Brim, margin, பானைமுதலியவற்றின்விளிம்பு. 3. The lip of a wound, வெட்டுவாய். உதடன், s. (fem. உதடி.) A blubber-lipped person, பருத்தவுதடன். உதடுதுடிக்க, inf. To quiver as the lips in anger. உதடுபிதுக்கி, s. A thick-lipped person. உதடுமடிக்க, inf. To bite the lips in anger. உதடுவெடிப்பு, s. Harelip. உதட்டடி, s. Angry, menace, bluster, boisterousness, வாயடி. உதட்டடியடிக்க, inf. To disconcert a plan by blustering. உதட்டுப்புண், s. Sore on the lip. உதட்டைப்பிதுக்க, inf. To pout, to shoot out the lower lip by way of negation or disdain. மூளியுதடு, s. A lip of which a part is wanting. 2. A harelip. மேலுதடு, s. The upper lip. கீழுதடு, s. The lower lip. 135)

eñcu (p. 73) கிறது, எஞ்சினது, ம், -எஞ்ச, v. n. To diminish, decrease, shorten, lessen, grow small, few, &c., சுருங்க. 2. To be deficient, be defective, to lack, want, குறைய. 3. To remain, be left as a surplus, சேஷமா யிருக்க. 4. To be elliptical--as words, or clauses, சொல்லெஞ்சிநிற்க. (p.) பின்பவ்வெஞ்சியவிருவரும். Afterwards the remaining two persons-எஞ்சணி, s. An ellipsis. எஞ்சிநிற்க, inf. To be wanting or elliptical--as language; to be understood, குறைந்திருக்க. எஞ்சியசொல்லினெய்தக்கூறல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Expressing in a few words, or an author's not mentioning things explicitly, but leaving them to be inferred by the reader--one of the thirty-two உத்தி. எஞ்சல், v. noun. oṭṭu (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒட்டினேன், வேன், ஒட்ட, v. a. and v. n. To stick on, to stick up, to glue on, cause to cleave or adhere, பொருத்த. 2. To apply, resort, betake one's self to a person for support, protection, to come or be near, or in contact with, to lean on or join one's self to a thing, சார. 3. To use qualifying terms, phrases, adjuncts, &c., அடைகொடுக்க. 4. To lay a wager, to gamble, பந்தயம்வைக்க. 5. To permit, suffer, allow, let, இடங்கொடுக்க. 6. To increase length or breath by addition, to add to, சேர்க்க. 7. To grow lean, be withered, shrunk, &c., to have the skin stick to the bones, be shrivelled as a fruit, &c., சுருங்க. 8. To stand near a wall, a pillar, &c., in order to over-hear, to way-lay, &c., விசேஷங்கேட்கவொளித்துநிற்க. சுட்டமண்ணும்பச்சைமண்ணுமொட்டாது. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. Will this unjust gain, &c., abide with you? உலகத்தோடொட்டவொழுகல். Acting conformably to the world. (குறள்.) மரத்தோடொட்ட. To hide one's self behind a tree. தோலெல்லாமெலும்போடொட்டிப்போயிற்று..... The skin cleaves to the bones. ஒருவனையொட்டிப்பிழைக்க. To subsist by means of another. அவனைவரவொட்டும். [Contracted in colloquial use to அவன்வரட்டும்.] Let him come. சொல்லவொட்டான். He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. Foes, persons that will not unite, பகைவர். (p.) ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cleave, to adhere, &c. 2. To supply a word, &c., understood or wanting to complete the sense. இதனையெல்லாவிடங்களிலுமொட்டிக்கொள்க... Apply this word in every similar instance. ஒட்டித்தப்பியிருக்க, inf. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. Distant relationship--as regards title to inheritance, சொற்பசம்பந்தம். ஒட்டுப்பற்றில்லாமற்போயிற்று. All friendship has ceased between us. ஒட்டுப்பற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Totally extinct, quite out, utterly exhausted. ஒட்டுத்தையல், s. Botching, mending, patching. ஒட்டுநர்--ஒட்டினர், s. Relations, friends, those connected with one, adherents, சினேகர். (p.) ஒட்டுநிற்க, inf. To lurk, wait in secret in order to over-hear. ஒட்டுப்புல், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A story learned by stealth, ஒளித்துக்கேட்கும்வார்த்தை. ஒட்டுவிட, inf. To become loose, to separate as boards, &c., glued together, பொருத்தநீங்க. ஒட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of sticking persons together to the ground or otherwise by magical drugs, incantations, &c., ஓர்வித்தை. ஒட்டுவேலை, s. Joining, veneering, sticking on, patching, இணைக்கும்வேலை. 2. Deceptive work, போலிவேலை. ஒட்டுவைக்க, inf. To swear, to take an oath, ஆணையிட. 2. To set birdlime to ensnare birds, ஒட்டுகண்ணிவைக்க. 3. (Rott.) To encompass a city with trenches. 66)

kyiṟu (p. 96) s. Rope, cord, string, twine, line, bobbin, வடம். கயிறடிக்க, inf. To strike lines on timber with a colored string--as a carpenter. கயிறறுந்தஆட்கள், s. [prov.] Vagabonds, vagrants, strollers. கயிறுகட்ட, inf. To put off from day to day. 2. To show a pretended consent--as a seller to give his goods to one who offers a low price. 3. To employ one to deceive another. கயிறுசாத்த--கயிறுபோட, inf. To pass a string between the leaves of an ola book in order to divine by it. கயிறுசிக்குப்பட, inf. To be embroiled, to disagree, to quarrel--as husband and wife, &c., தொந்தரவுபட. கயிறுதடி, s. One of the weaver's implements, நெய்வார்கருவியிலொன்று. கயிறுதிரிக்க--கயிறுமுறுக்க, inf. To twist, twine, cord, &c. கயிறுபிடிக்க--கயிறுபின்ன, inf. To plat bobbin, cord, &c. கயிறுமாற, inf. To change the rope on the head of a horse or ox newly bought, to ratify the purchase--considered auspicious to the seller. (திருவிளை.) கயிற்றுக்கோல், s. A kind of balance or steel-yard, ஓர்தராசு. கயிற்றுக்கோலாட்டம், v. noun. Playing with strings and sticks so that a weft or lace is formed thereby, ஓர்வ கைவிளையாட்டு. கயிற்றுச்சுருள், s. A coil of rope. See சுருளை. கயிற்றுப்பொருத்தம், s. Astrological agreement required in order to the assumption of the marriage symbol-one of the ten points in astrology in which there should be agreement in the horoscopes of the male and female in order to the suitableness of a marriage connexion.--Note. When such agreement is wanting, though the marriage takes place, the symbol is not put on. கயிற்றேணி, s. A rope-ladder, the shrouds of a vessel, நூலேணி. வடக்கயிறு, s. A rope which is used in lowering or elevating the ploughshare. 2. A great rope used at Hindu festivals for drawing the car. தொடுகயிறு, s. A rope used in ploughing. 51)

kuṉṟu (p. 132) கிறது, குன்றினது, ம், குன்ற, v. n. [vul. குன்னு.] To lessen, decrease, diminish; to become reduced, குறைய. 2. To droop or fail, to be dispirited, குலைய. 3. To lose or be wanting in natural properties; to lack, to want, to go to ruin, பொன்ற. 4. [in gram.] To be cut off or omitted--as a letter, &c., கெட. குன்றக்கூறல், v. noun. The female energy or active power of deity in all the operations of creating, preserving, destroying, &c., பராசத்திமுதலியன.--Note. Each form of the deity is represented as having a distinct சத்தி described as his consort. 3. A name of பார்வதி. 4. The female organ, as the counter part of the phallic emblem of Siva, ஆவிடையார். 5. The object of worship being the privities of a naked woman, in personification of the fecundating and operative principle of deity in nature. சத்தியுள்ளவன், s. A rich man, a man of influence. (c.) சத்தியில்லாதவன், s. An incompetent person, a weak person. (c.) சத்திவிளங்க, inf. [loc.] To become manifest as power, a miraculous power. அருட்சத்தி, s. [in சிவஞானபோதம்.] The active energy of deity which is said to enlighten the soul and to be a source of benefit to all animated beings. சிவசத்தி, s.
