cāṇai (p. 174) s. A grind--stone, commonly round; a whet-stone, a hone, சாணைக்கல். 2. [loc.] Cloth, clout, coarse or ragged cloth, &c., spread under an infant, சா ணைச்சீலை. W. p. 837. SAN'A. 3. [prov.] A round, flat cake--as of jaggery, or tamarind pulp, வட்டமாயட்டது. (c.) பல்லைத்தட்டிச்சாணையிலேபோடு. Knock out his teeth, and set him on his clouts, i. e. treat him as a babe. Spoken when want of years is pleaded for indiscretion, &c. சாணைதீர--சாணைபிடிக்க, inf. To grind an instrument. 2. To hone, whet, sharpen. 3. To cut and polish gems. சாணைவைக்க, inf. To grind, as an instrument. மெழுகுசாணை--நெருப்புச்சாணை, s. A grind-stone used without wetting, formed of black sand and gum-lac. எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. Another kind. See under எள். நீர்ச்சாணை, s. A hone with which water is used, when grinding. சாணைக்கூறை, s. [prov.] A piece of new cloth, given by the parents of a male infant to those of a female at the time of betrothing, in pledge of future marriage. சாணைக்கூறைபோட, inf. tīṭṭu (p. 242) கிறேன், தீட்டினேன், வேன், தீட்ட, v. a. To whet, hone, sharpen, or rub knives, on a board, கூராக்க. 2. To clean rice, &c., by pounding, அரிசிதீட்ட. 3. (fig.) To beat, strike, அடிக்க. 4. To improve or sharpen the intellects, மனதைத்தீட்ட. 5. (for தீற்று.) To clean the teeth, பல்துலக்க. 6. To write, inscribe, delineate, எழுத. 7. To paint, draw pictures, &c., சித்திரிக்க. 8. To bind, tie, fasten, கட்ட. (திருக்குற்றாலப்புரா ணம். தீட்டத்தீட்டக்கூராகிறது. It becomes sharpened the more it is whetted; (fig.) the mental powers improve by exercise, application and study. தீட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To try a knife by a hone. 2. [prov.] Rice sifted and cleansed. (c.) தீட்டு, v. noun. Whetting, honing, கூர் மையாக்குதல். தீட்டுக்கல்--தீட்டுகல், s. A whet-stone, a hone, &c., சாணைக்கல். தீட்டுக்கோல்--தீட்டுகோல், s. A paint brush, எழுதுகோல். (p.) தீட்டுப்பலகை--தீட்டுமரம், s. A board or slab for sharpening or cleaning knives or other instruments. 18)
