nṇṭu (p. 269) s. A crab, a lobster. See ஞெ ண்டு. (c.) 2. Cancer of the Zodiac, கர்க்க டகவிராசி. There are different kinds of crabs, as ஒருகால்நண்டு, a kind with one claw only, taken for the கணை disease; கடல் நண்டு, sea crab, Pagurus; கடுக்காய்நண்டு-சூக்காய்நண்டு, small crabs used in broth and taken for dropsical swellings as promoting urinary discharges, குளநண்டு, small tank crabs; செம்பாறைநண்டு--பெருநண்டு, a large red kind, தில்லைநண்டு, a black lobster found under the தில்லை tree on the sea shore; நீலக்காலிநண்டு, blue legged crab; பீநண்டு. common crabs found in the holes of moist grounds; வயல்நண்டு--கழனிநண்டு, fresh water crabs found in the fields; வெள்ளை நண்டு--பால்நண்டு, a whitish kind. The middle letter sometimes changes to ட் Such compounds are mostly of Jaffna. நட்டுச்சினை--நண்டுச்சினை, s. Crab's spawn. நட்டுச்சினைக்கல், s. A kind of stone in wells of the color of crab's spawn. indicative of a good supply of water. நட்டுச்சினைமண், s. A kind of earth of the color of crab's spawn. நட்டோடு, s. As நண்டோடு. நட்டோட்டுக்கிட்டம், s. A crust or coat of dry mud formed over a brackish or moist soil. நட்டோட்டுப்பார், s. A thin coat or lamina of rock that easly splits off. நண்டின்பெருங்கால், s. The large claws of a crab. நண்டுக்கல், s. A kind of petrified lobster used as a charm against poisonous bites, and in cases of strangury, &c. நண்டுக்காற்கீரை, s. A kind of eatable greens, Bergera verticillata. நண்டுக்காற்புல், s. A kind of grass, Isch&ae;mum aristatum. நண்டுக்கொடுக்கு, s. The forceps of a lobster. நண்டுக்கோது, s. Refuse of lobsters, as the shell, &c. நண்டுத்தெறுக்கால், s. As நட்டுவக்காலி நண்டுச்சினை, s. See நட்டுச்சினை. நண்டூருகால், s. Small legs of a crab. நண்டோடு, s. A lobster shell. 8)

nrai (p. 270) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To grow grey, to become pale or whitish, மயிர்வெளுக்க. 2. To fade as standing corn or vegetables from drought, &c., வெளிற. 3. To be faint or pale in color, நிறம்வெளுக்க. (c.) நான்நரைத்துப்போனேன்--எனக்குநரைத்துப்போ யிற்று. I am grown grey. உமக்கென்னவயதுக்குநரைத்ததோமயிருக்குநரைத்த தோ. Are you grey by age, or is your hair merely turned white? நரைத்தகிழவன், s. A grey old-man. நரைத்தவன், appel. n. A grey-headed man. நரைத்ததலை, s. A hoary head. நரைத்தபயிர், s. A faded crop. 103)

nāy (p. 274) s. A dog, ஞமலி, 2. The sign of the regent of the south-west, நிருதியின்குறி. 3. Conical pieces in the play of chess or ticklack, சூதாடுகருவி.--Of நாய், there are கடல்நாய், a seal; மரநாய், palmyra dog; நீர்நாய், மீனாய், a beaver; செந்நாய், a wild dog, கோ ணாய் or கோநாய், a wolf, (c.) நாயும்பேயுங்கொண்டுபோகின்றன. Dogs and devils (strangers) carry it away. நாய்க்குமுழுத்தேங்காய்தக்குமா. Of what use to the dog is an unbroken cocoanut? நாய்வேஷம்போட்டால்குலைத்தேதீரவேணும். If one disguise himsel as a dog he should bark. நாயரஞ்சி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாயாட்டம், Dog-like, mean, servile. நாயீ, s. A dog fly; [ex இ. நாயுணி, s. A kind of tick. நாயும்புலியும், s. A kind of play, with seeds, stones, &c., in squares. நாயுருவி, s. [sometimes நாய்குருவி.] A kind of plant, Achyranthes aspera, L. which forms one of the nine kinds of sacrificial fuel. See சமித்து.-- The root is used as a dentifrice, and from the skin of the root, a decoction is made as an aperient for infants. The leaves are bruised and applied to scorpion bites as a specific; [ex உருவி, penetrating as a biting dog.] There are two kinds, செந் நாயுருவி, the red, and வெண்ணாயுருவி, the white, which see. நாயுறக்கம், s. Very slight sleep, as of a dog. நாயோட்டம், s. A dog's pace, spoken of a horse, dhoney, &c. நாய்குருவி, s. As நாயுருவி. (R.) நாய்க்கடி, s. Bite of a dog. நாய்கடிபூனைக்கடிபடுகிறார்கள். They are snaring like cats and dogs. நாய்க்கடுகு, s. A small plant like mustard, as நாய்வேளை. நாய்க்குட்டி, s. A young dog, a puppy. நாய்க்குணம்--நாய்த்தனம், s. Doggedness. See குணம். நாய்க்கோலம், s. Mean appearance, shabiness of dress, &c. நாய்ச்சீரகம், s. A plat. See சீரகம். நாய்த்திசை, s. South-west. See திக்கு. நாய்த்துளசி, s. A kind of wild Marjoram. See கஞ்சாங்கோரை. நாய்வேளை, S. A plant, as நாய்க்கடுகு, Cleome viscosa, L. See நல்வேளை. நாய்நரம்பு, s. [prov.] A kind of catgut put round the neck of children for whooping cough. நாய்நாக்கி, s. A species of Euphorbia neriifolia, as இலைக்கள்ளி. நாய்ப்பயறு, s. A leguminous plant, Indigofera glabra, L. நாய்ப்பாகல், s. A medicinal plant of the Senna species, Bryonia maysorensis. (R.) நாய்ப்புடுக்கன், s. A large tree, Cynometra cauliflora, ஓர்மரம். நாய்ப்புடோல், s. A plant, ஓர்செடி. நாய்முகன், s. One who has a face like a dog. See நாய்மூஞ்சி. நாய்முருகை, s. [prov.] A kind of coral stone, ஓர்முருகைக்கல். நாய்முள்ளி, s. A thorny plant, Solanum, Ind. நாய்மூஞ்சி, s. The face of a dog. 2. As நாய்முகன். நாய்விட்டைக்கல், s. [prov.] A kind of stone, ஓர்வகைச்சுண்ணாம்புக்கல். நாய்வெள்ளை, s. Brown or whitish brown, as some cows. நாய்வேம்பு, s. A plant, Indigofera viscosa, ஓர்செடி. 15)

pāl (p. 313) s. Milk, பசுவின் பால்முதலியன. 2. Milky juice in plants, trees and fruits--as the eocoa-nut, மரமுதலியவற்றின்பால். 3. Lymph, matter, fluid in pustules, &c., அம்மைப்பால். 4. (சது.) Whiteness, வெண்மை. [a contraction of Sa. Palana, milk of a cow recently calved.]--Note. In combination the final ல் is changed by rule to ற், sometimes to ன், பாலுக்குங்காவல்பூனைக்குந்தோழன். A guard to the milk, but a friend to the cat. பாலும்வெள்ளைமோரும்வெள்ளை. Milk is white, whey is white--spoken of persons or things apparently similar, but really very different. பால்வார்த்துமுழுகுவான். He will bathe, putting milk on his head (in token of his joy at your death, &c.). பாலடை, s. A shell for a milk-ladle, பாலடைச்சங்கு. [loc.] 2. A shrub, பால டைச்செடி, Hallia sororia. பாலடைய, inf. As பால்கொள்ள. பாலவரை, s. A whitish species of pulse. See அவரை. பாலாடை--பாலேடு, s. Cream of milk. பாலாறு, s. The river Palar. பாலிறங்குதல்--பால்வடிதல், v. noun. Pustule becoming dry. 2. The flowing down of milk. பாலுண்ணி, s. A kind of wart. See உண்ணி. பாலுமறுகுந்தப்பித்தோய, inf. [prov.] To bathe after putting milk and sacrificial grass on the head--as a bride and bridegroom before marriage, before marriage, to obtain progeny. பாலும்பழமும்கொடுக்க, inf. To give milk and plantains as done by a bride and bridegroom to each other, after the marriage ceremony. (c.) பாலுறட்டி, s. [prov.] A kind of pastry, made with cocoa-nut milk. பாலூட்டி, inf. To suckle a child. பாலொலிக்க, inf. [prov.] To keep back milk as a cow for its calf. பால்கட்ட--பால்வைக்க, inf. To innoculate, to vaccinate. பால்குடிக்க, inf. To suck milk as a babe. 2. To take milk. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. பால்குடிமறந்தபிள்ளை, A wanted child. பாலனும்பால்குடியான் Even the suckling ceases to suck--a phrase expressive of fear from oppression. பால்கொள்ள, inf. To form a milky consistence, as in young kernels, or pustules. பால்சுரக்குதல், v. noun. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்சொரிதல், v. noun. Flowing out of milk. See சொரி, v. பால்தெளித்தல், v. noun. A funeral ceremony, See பாற்றெளி. பால்தோய்தல். The curdling of milk, by itself. பால்நண்டு, s. The white crab. See நண்டு. பால்நரம்பு--பானரம்பு, s. Blue veins as they appear in a young mother who is suckling a child. பால்பாய்தல், v. noun. [prov.] Exuding of milky juice from a tapped or wounded tree. பால்பிடிக்க, inf. As பால்கொள்ள. பால்பிடிபதம், s. The stage of grain when they newly formed kernels are of a milky consistency. பால்பிழிய, inf. To press out cocoa-nut milk. பால்பெயர்தல், inf. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்பொழிய, inf. To give milk freely, as cows, &c. 2. (fig.) To be prosperous. பால்மடி, s. An udder teeming with milk. பால்மணம், s. Smell of milk. 2. A milk-man. பாற்காரி, s. A woman who sells milk. 2. A wet nurse. பாற்காவடி, s. Milk, carried with ceremony under a canopy to be presented to an idol. This is commonly done at the Palney festivals.
