oppurvu (p. 83) s. Established customs and duties, obligation, முறைமை. 2. Beneficence, liberality, உபகாரம். 3. Levelness, evenness, சமம். 4. Agreement, union, ஒற்றுமை. ஒப்புரவினால்வருங்கேடெனின். If it be said that by liberality, poverty should result-(குறள். 67. 1.) ஒப்புரவொழுகு. Conduct yourself consistently. (ஔவை.) ஒப்புரவறிதல், v. noun. To fulfil established duties, முறைமைசெய்ய. 2. To level, smooth, சமமாக்க. 3)

ōmpu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓம்பினேன், வேன், ஓ ம்ப, v. a. To protect, guard, defend, save, காக்க. 2. To preserve, keep, take care of, பாதுகாக்க. 3. To keep off, ward off, dispel, cease from, ஒழிய. 4. To cherish, nourish, maintain, support, to cause to increase, வளர்க்க. பரிந்தோம்பிக்காக்கவொழுக்கந்தெரிந்தோம்பித்தேரி னுமஃதேதுணை. Desire and maintain with great care the conduct proper to your caste, which, how much soever the virtues are examined and understood, and how much soever the senses are guarded, is alone the convoy of the soul. (குறள்.) அஞ்சலோம்பென்றார். He said, away with your fears. (குறள்.) வலியார்மேன்மாறேற்றலோம்புக. Let opposition to those more powerful than yourself cease. (குறள்.) விலக்கியவோம்பி. Avoiding whatever is prohibited by the shasters-- (நீதிநெறி.) தாங்கற்றனவோம்பாது. Not retaining in memory what they have learnt--(நீதிநெறி.) விருந்தோம்ப, inf. To entertain (guests), religious mendicants, &c.--as one of the duties of the householder. See இல்வாழ்வான். தீயோம்பி, verb. part. Cherishing the sacred fire. (நீதிநெறி.) வேள்வியோம்ப, inf. To offer burnt sacrifices. ஓம்பல், v. noun. Taking care of, &c., பாதுகாத்தல். 105)

kiṭai (p. 109) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To be obtained, to come to one, to be realized, found; to come into one's possession, to turn to account, அடைய. With the agent in the dative, and the object in the nominative--as எனக்கொருபுஸ்்தகங்கிடைத்தது; lit. a book has come to me; i.e. I have obtained a book. 2. To encounter, to be confronted with--as warriors; to oppose, எதிர்க்க. In the first sense, the verb is commonly used in the neuter gender. எனக்குப்பாக்கியங்கிடைத்தது. I have become rich or happy. I have had prosperity. வழுக்கிவிழுகையில் ஊன்றுகோல்போல் நீ கிடைத் தாயே. You have offered yourself to me as a prop--as a walking-stick to one who slips and is ready to fall. 18)

koḷḷi (p. 147) --கொள்ளிக்கட்டை, s. A fire-brand, நெருப்புவிறகு. கொள்ளிக்கெதிர்போனாலும், வெள்ளிக்கெதிர்போக லாகாது. You may oppose yourself to a fire-brand, but not to the planet Venus --said in reference to going East-ward when Venus is the morning star or Westward when it is the evening star. குடியிருந்தவீட்டிலேகொள்ளிவைக்கிறவன். An incendiary who sets fire to a house where he has received hospitality, i. e., one who returns evil for good. கொள்ளிகுடம்--கொள்ளியுங்குடமும், s. The fire-brand and water-pot which are carried by the chief mourner three times round the funeral pile previous to its being ignited. கொள்ளிக்கண்ணன், s. A fierce-eyed man. 2. One whose looks are blighting. 3. [prov.] A horse or bull with red eyes, deemed ominous. கொள்ளிக்கரப்பன், s. A kind of blain in children resembling scars from burning. See கரப்பன். கொள்ளிக்காற்குதிரை, s. [prov.] A horse with one white leg. கொள்ளிக்கொட்டான்--கொள்ளியெ றும்பு--கொள்ளிவாலெறும்பு--கொள்ளிவாயெறும்பு, s. An ant that stings. See எறும்பு. கொள்ளிசொருகுதல், v. noun. [prov.] To insert a brand in the roof of a house --as an incendiary. 2. To cause or bring about another's ruin. கொள்ளித்தேள், s. [prov.] A scorpion whose sting is very severe, ஓர்தேள். கொள்ளிவட்டம், s. A circle described in the air with a fire-brand by boys in play (p.) கொள்ளிவாய்ச்சர்ப்பம்--கொள்ளிவாய் விரியன், s. A serpent whose bite causes burning smart. கொள்ளிவாய்பிசாசு--கொள்ளிவாய்ப் பேய், s. Ignis fatnus, or jack-with-alantern, (lit.) a fire-mounthed-devil. கொள்ளிவாலி, s. [prov.] A cow or dog with the body black and tail white. கொள்ளிவைத்தல், v. noun. Setting fire in general. 2. Lighting the funeral pile,--as done by the chiefmourner. 3. Injuring or ruining a person, a family, &c. கொள்ளிவைத்துக்குடமுடைத்தல், v. noun Setting fire to the funeral pile and breaking a pot full of water, a funeral ceremony. 17)

cuvṭi (p. 197) s. [improp. செவடி.] The child's alphabet on the ola, ola-school-books, ola books in general, எழுதியபுத்தகம்; [ex சுவடு, a mark.] (c.) அரிச்சுவடி, s. The alphabet. சுவடிபடிக்க, inf. To read and learn an ola-book. சுவடிகட்ட, inf. To tie up a book. சுவடியைக்கட்டுங்கள். Tie up your books; i. e., School is over; go home. இருக்கட்டுஞ்சுவடியைக்கட்டு. Don't boast much of yourself; better stop. சுவடிசேர்க்க, inf. To make an olabook for a child. சுவடியெழுத, inf. To write the alphabet or the first lesson of any succeeding book. சுவடிதுவக்க, inf. To begin the alphabet in an ola-book. 22)

cuvēccai (p. 198) --சுயேச்சை, s. Self-will, following one's own purpose or inclination, free choice, free will, free-agency, தன்னிச்சை; [ex சுவ, et இச்சை.] நீ சுயேச்சையாய்ச்சொல்லுகிறாயா யாருஞ்சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார்களா. Do you say this of yourself or were you told by any body? சுயேச்சையாய்த்திரிகிறான். He acts according to his own will. 35) *

tāṉ (p. 236) The reciprocal pronoun, himself, herself, itself, the genitive being தன்; in composition sometimes தற். 2. One's self. 3. An emphatic or intensive particle, signifying indeed, really, certainly, தேற் றச்சொல்; as அப்படித்தான், it is so. (c.) 4. An expletive, or அசைச்சொல் suffixed to any noun or pronoun of any person, and declined instead of it, as நிலந்தனைக்கொத்தினான், he dug the earth. 5. Personal identity, சுயம். (p.)--Note. According to the Agamas, the soul is the person or being, and the body and mind with their powers and faculties, are merely adventitious; being the fruit of actions, &c. தானேவளர்ந்துதவத்தால்கொடியெடுத்தவன். One who has grown great and become famous of himself through meritorious austerities; often used of one who has risen by the kindness of another, but forgotten his benefactor. தானொருவனுமேதனியாகவந்தான். He only came, he came alone. தான்சாகாமருந்துதின்னலாமா. May any one take medicine to kill himself? தானுள்ளபோதுலோகம். The world is one's while he lives. தானாக்கனியாததுதடிகொண்டடித்தால்கனியுமா. Will a fruit, not ripening of itself, ripen by being beaten with a stick? தானுந்தலைவனும். The soul and God. நீதான். You yourself, you certainly. அவன்றன்னைக்கண்டேன். I saw him. (p.) அவன்றான். He himself; he certainly, truly, really. தானாக, inf. To be absolute, unique, self-existent, independent, தானாயிருக்க; applicable to the deity. 2. To be assimilated, தன்வண்ணமாக. தானாக, [adverbial.] Of his, her, or its own accord; spontaneously, voluntarily. 2. Of or by himself, herself, itself. தானாக்குதல், v. noun. Assimilating a person or thing to one's self, itself, &c., தன்வண்ணமாக்குதல். தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language, from other authors, one of thirty-two உத்தி. தானேயானவன்--தான்தோன்றி, appel. n. The self-existent, the deity, கடவுள். தான்பிழைக்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To regard or consult one's own safety, to be careful not to betray, involve or jeopardize one's self. 2. To walk humbly, obediently, submissively. பதிவிடை, s. Ambush, ambuscade, பதி விருக்குமிடம். (Old Dic.) பதிவிருக்க, inf.
