āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

iṟaicci (p. 57) s. Flesh, meat, மாமிசம். 2. One of the seven constituent parts of the body. See தாது. இறைச்சிகுத்தி, s. A spit. இறைச்சிப்பொருள், s. The properties, productions derived from the கருப்பொருள் of a soil. (See அகப்பொருள்.) 2. [in rhetoric.] A figurative mode of speech by which a country is described in relation to the productions or properties derived from its கருப்பொருள்--as குறிஞ்சிப்பூக்கொண்டு பெருந்தேனிழைக்குநாடு, a country enriched with the sweetest honey extracted from its mountainflowers. cuṭu (p. 193) கிறேன், சுட்டேன், வேன், சுட, v. a. To warm, heat, scald, burn, ignite, தகிக்க. 2. To roast, toast, bake, அப்பமுதலியனசுட. 3. To cauterize, brand, scar, சூட்டுக்கோலாற்சுட. 4. To burn up, consume, எரிக்க. 5. To burn as bricks, chunam, tiles or earthern wares in a kiln, காளவாயிற்சுட. 6. To imbrown by heat, வெதுப்ப. 7. To fire a gun, canon, &c., வெடிசுட. 8. (fig.) To mortify scorch the feelings--by sarcasm, reproach, &c., நிந்திக்க. 9. To blight with the eye, கண்ணூ றுபடுத்த. 1. To blight with the tongue, நாவூறுபடுத்த. 11. To sublimate medicines, நீற்ற. அவனைச்சுட்டுப்போட்டான். He has shot him. நல்லோரைத்தீயோர்சொற்சுடுகிறது. The conversation of the wicked gives pain to (burns) the good. நாவினாற்சுட்டவடு. The wound produced by caustic language. (குற.) சுடுகலம், s. An earthen vessel, குயக் கலம். (சது.) சுடுகண், s. A fiery eye. See கொள் ளிக்கண். சுடுகாடு--சுடுநிலம், s. A place of cremation. 2. (fig.) A desert, a place where victuals cannot be got. (c.) சுடுகாட்டுமணிபொறுக்கி, s. A bird. See under காடு. சுடுகோல், s. A rod for stirring the fire in burning a corpse. 2. A brand, an iron rod, சூட்டுக்கோல். சுடுசுண்ணம், s. Burnt lime. சுடுமருந்து, s. A chemical preparation, more commonly, எரிமருந்து. சுடுவனம், s. A place for cremation. சுடுகாடு. சுட்டுக்கொட்டைப்பரப்ப, inf. To devastate a town, and sow ot with seed. (Colloq.) சுட்டசாந்து, s. As சுடுசுண்ணம். சுட்டெரிக்க, inf. To consume by burning. சுட்டசெங்கல், s. Burnt bricks, opposite to பச்சைச்செங்கல். sun-burnt-bricks. சுட்டவிறைச்சி, s. See இறைச்சி. பழுக்கச்சுட, inf. To give a bright yellow color to gold ornaments, by immersing them in a boiling solution of sulphur, saltpetre, culinary salt, and turmeric. See பழு. v. சாடுவெட்டிச்சுட, inf. To clear and burn forest land. நாவிலேசுட, inf. To brand the tongue in restoring one to caste. நாவாலேசுட, inf. To blight with the tongue, &c. சுட்டுப்போட, inf. To consume by fire; to shoot; to blight. பிள்ளையைக்கண்ணாற்சுட்டுப் போட்டார்கள்.... They have blighted (lit. burnt) the child, with their eyes; incduced sickness. விரகங்கொண்டவரைச்சந்திரன்சுடுகிறது. The moon's rays inflame the lascivious. அவன் ஊரைச்சுட்டுப்போடுவான். He will burn the country, i. e. devastate it, &c. 31)

cūṭu (p. 199) s. (Gen. சூட்டு.) Heat, warmth, burn, scald, வெப்பம். 2. Brand, scar from a burn, or scald, சுடுசூடு. 3. Fomentation, அனல், [ex சுடு, to burn.] 4. Stack of ricesheaves, or other grain-ricks, நென்முதலி யவற்றின்போர். 5. A sheaf of corn given to the washerman, barber, carpenter, &c., அரிக்கட்டு; [ex சூடு, v.] (c.) நீர்சூடாயிருக்கிறது. The water is hot. அவனுக்குச் சூடு கண்டிருக்கிறது. He has got strangury. His system is much irritated. சூட்டினாலுண்டானது. That which is produced by heat (in the body). சூட்டோடேசூடு. Repeated as hot applications. 2. While the thing is fresh. சூடடிக்க, inf. To thrash the sheaves. சூடுகாட்ட, inf. To apply fomentations, to foment. 2. To hold near the fire. 3. To warm, to heat; to air-commonly at a fire. 4. To appear hot--as fever. சூடுகாண, inf. To become warm, as after a cold fit. சூடுகொள்ள, inf. To become heated, as the system by neglect of bathing; by working in chunam, in the sun, &c. 2. To become a little feverish. சூடுசுட, inf. To apply fomentations, to heat by external applications. 2. To brand animals. 3. To cauterize by fire. சூடுண்க--சூடுண்ண, inf. To be burnt. 2. fig. To be scolded. சூடுகண்டபூனையடுப்பங்கரைசேராது. A burnt at will not come near the hearth. சூடுண்டுமவனுக்குவெட்கமில்லை. Although he has been scolded, he has no shame. சூடுதாவுதல், v. noun. The striking of heat from fire. சூடுநிற்க, inf. [prov.] To continue hot, remain feverish. சூடுபறிய--சூடுபோக, inf. To be moderated, as heat in the body by bathing, &c. (c.) சூடுபிடிக்க, inf. To become hot. 2. To burn, as the sun's rays. 3. To become heated as the system by neglect of bathing, &c. சூடுபிறக்குதல், v. noun. The arising of heat (by friction, &c.) (c.) சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Margosa-oil extracted from the seeds by heat. 2. An oil-preparation used to cool one's system. சூட்டடி, v. noun. Beating sheaves (for the first time.) சூட்டடுப்பு, s. See அடுப்பு. சூட்டிறைச்சி, s. See இறைச்சி. கைச்சூடு, s. Heat of the hand. 2. [prov.] The sheaf given to the reapers. நகச்சூடு, s. The degree of heat in warm water, commonly ascertained by putting one's finger into it. சூட்டுக்கோல், s. A branding, cauterizing iron. See சூலக்குறடு. சூட்டுவலி, s. The pains of a pregnant woman before delivery. (c.) சூடுசுள்ளாப்பிக்க, inf. [prov.] To loosen, shake, and scatter in the threshing floor the sheaves of a stack, preparatory for treading out the corn. சூடுஉதற, inf. To separate to corn from the threshed straw. 2. As சூடுசுள்ளாப்பிக்க. சூடுமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To tread corn from the sheaves--as சூடடிக்க. சூடுவைக்க--சூடுபோட, inf. To brand cattle, &c. (c.) சூடுவேய--சூடுமேய, inf. To heap up the stacks or sheaves. 6)
