aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. Moving, shaking, rocking, &c. 2. Fighting, battle, war. 3. Being powerful. 4. Victory. 5. Playing. 6. Coition. 7. Dancing. 8. Washing, bathing. 9. Boasting, friendly word or conversation. 1. Saying. ஆடல்பாடல், s. Singing and dancing. ஆடற்றரு, s. A dancing song used in comedies. ஆட்டம், v. noun. Motion, vibration, agitation, vacillation, rocking, swinging, rolling or pitching (at sea, &c.), அசைவு. 2. Dance, play, game, prank, an act of play, a turn-about, a turn, once playing the game, விளையாட்டு. 3. Likeness, the assumption of a character, profession, conduct, shape in imitation, தன்மை. 4. Moving about, energy, vigor, action, முயற்சி. (c.) அங்கேபோக ஆட்டமாடுகிறான். He insists on going there, (contrary to advice.) இந்த ஆட்டத்துக்கெல்லாமவனசையான். He will not be moved by this agitation. அவன் ஆட்டந்தீர்ந்தது. He power, bustle, agitation, harassing, &c. has come to an end. அவனிரண்டாட்டம் விளையாடினான் ஓராட்டந் தோற்றுப்போனான். He played two games and lost one of them. ஆட்டமடித்தல், v. noun. A play among children in which the புள்ளு, or small stick, being swung round so as to fly t a distance, is struck by the கிட்டி, or larger stick. ஆட்டமெடுக்க, inf. To enter on a rash or odd enterprise, to beat another in the above play. 10)

ellām (p. 74) s. All, the whole, every, முழுதும். Like other universal terms, this admits உம், which however is often omitted, when the word is not used as a prefix; when it occupies the place of an adjective, its ம் is lost, and உம் is added to the word which it qualifies.--Note. In classical usage எல்லாம் takes அற்று as its declining particle--as மரமெல்லாவற்றையுங்கண்டான், he has seen all the trees. எல்லாத்திசைகளும். The whole horizon. எல்லாநம்மையும். All of us. எல்லீர்நும்மையும். All of you. எல்லாப்பூமியும்--பூமியெல்லாம். All the land, the whole of the land. 2. The whole earth. எல்லாரும்--எல்லோரும். All persons, அனை வரும். எல்லாரையும்--எல்லார்தம்மையும். All of them. எல்லோமும். We all, all of us, நாமெல்லாம். நீங்ககெல்லாரும். Impr. for நீவிரெல்லாரும். அவர்களெல்லாரும். All of them.--Note. The superlative being unknown in Tamil, the comparative is employed, as in the following and similar instances. The universality of the term gives it a superlative meaning. எல்லாரிலுமேலானவர். The greatest of all. 2. The most high. அதுஎல்லாவற்றிலும்மேலானது. It is the highest of all. 8)

ellai (p. 74) s. A limit, border, boundary, frontier, confine, precinct, அவதி. 2. Measure, extent, அளவு. 3. End, termination, verge, goal, extremity, முடிவு. 4. The sun, சூரியன். 5. An inauspicious time--as twilight, noon, &c., when demons are about, an unseasonable time for the performance of an action, ஒவ்வாதநேரம். எல்லைக்கட்டு, s. A boundary, demarkation, வரம்பு. 2. v. noun. Restraint, circumseription, கட்டுப்பாடு. எல்லைக்கல், s. A stone to mark a limit, a land-mark. எல்லைக்காவல், s. A watch-shed, &c., to mark the division of one field from another, ஊரெல்லையிற்காக்கும்வயற்கா வல். எல்லைக்குறிப்பு, s. Boundarymark, land-mark, எல்லையடையாளம். 2. Milestones, mileposts, வழியளவைக்குறிப்பு. எல்லைக்கேடு, s. Inconvenience, want of opportunity, சமயமொவ்வாமை. 2. Unsuitableness, or inconvenience in regard to place, ஸ்தானமொவ்வாமை. எல்லைத்தீ, s. The fire-deluge, the fire that destroys all things at the close of an age, ஊழ்த்தீ. எல்லைப்படுத்த, inf. To limit, to settle a boundary, அளவுபடுத்த. 2. oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. To spirt out, splash up--as water; to spring, to be brisk or active--as quicksilver, இரச முதலியனருசிக்க. 3. (fig.) To be boisterous, frolic, haughty, arrogant, பெருமையிலேதுள்ள. 4. v. a. to pass over, to leap over, கடக்க. 5. To surpass, overcome, to escape from, கடந்துபோக. குதித்துக்குதித்துமாவிடித்தாலும்புழுக்கைக்கொருகொ ழுக்கட்டையே. Though the poor maidservant beat flour ever so hard and briskly, she will have but a small கொழுக்கட்டை cake. குதித்துப்பாய, inf. To leap over, to leap down from a carriage, &c. 2. (fig.) [prov.] To celebrate a temple festival. சிறப்புச்சொல், s. A specific word, not generic. சிறப்புப்பாயிரம், s. A special preface --distinguished from பொதுப்பாயிரம். சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. Particular, proper, specific or special names--opposed to பொதுப்பெயர். 2. Official or acquired names, titles of rank, &c.--Note. சிறப்புப் பெயர் is derived from eight sources as-திணை, a track--as குறவன், a mountainer. 2. நிலம், country--as சீனன், Chinese. 3. சாதி, caste--as அம்பட்டன், the barber. 4. குடி, family--as சேரன், the (royal) Seran. 5. உடைமை, possession--as உடையன், the possessor. 6. பொருள், property, as பொன் னன், the possessor of gold. 7. குணம், quality--as பெரியன், the great one. 8. கல்வி, learning--as ஆசிரியன், a teacher. சிறப்புவிதி, s. A specific rule. சிறப்பெடுக்க, inf. To solemnize a temple festival, திருவிழாக்கொண்டாட. (p.) சிறப்பெழுத்து, s. tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

A go-between, one who negotiates affairs for others, commonly in an ill sense. உதவியாய்க்கருமம்நடத்துவோன். [usage.] 4. one who negotiates love matters for others, a pimp, சங்கம்வாங்கி; [usage.] [ex பாகம்.] இவன்விளையாட்டுக்கெல்லாம்பாகன். He is the agent in all these tricks. (Jaff.) 18)

The shining of a glow-worm. கிறிஸ்துவின் பிரசங்கத்தின்முன்னே மற்றைமதஸ் தர்களின்பிரசங்கஞ்சூரியப்பிரகாசத்தின்முன்மின்மினி ப்பிரகாசம்போலிருக்கிறது.
