añcaṉam (p. 7) s. Blackness, darkness, black coloring, கறுப்பு. 2. A collyrium or black paint for the eyelids, கண் ணுக்கிடுமை. 3. aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

To move about, walk or ride for recreation, exercise, &c., to pass to and fro, walk at leisure, take a jaunt, an excursion, a stroll, a ramble, சாரிபோக. 2. To go in procession, to parade the streets--as festal processions, ஊர்வலம்வர. உலாயதுகலாபமஞ்ஞை. The long tailed peacock gently moved along. காருலாவுசோலை. A forest of trees so lofty that the passing clouds move in their tops. நின்கோலுலாவுநிலத்து. In the country over which thy sceptre is wielded-- (தண்டி.) திரைசென்றுலாஞ்சேர்ப்ப. O! ruler of the coasts on which the waves sport. (உலரம் for உலாவும்.) காதளவுசென்றுலாவுங்கண். An eye that looks every where, (lit.) the eye that passes to the ear. உலாவித்திரிய, inf. To walk about idly, or at leisure. உலா, v. noun. Procession, moving about for recreation or exercise, a ramble, a jaunt, an excursion, a stroll, an airing, சாரிவருதல். 2. A species of poem in the நேரிசைக்கலிவெண்பா, in which the praises of a hero are sung by women of the seven different ages, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். உலாப்போதல், v. noun. ulai (p. 66) s. A smith's forge, or furnace, கொல்லனுலை. 2. A fireplace for cooking, a hearth, நெருப்புள்ளவடுப்பு. 3. A pot of water set on the fire, or fireplace for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்யவைக்குநீருலை. உலைகட்ட, inf. To decorate the top of a pot with mango leaves and set it on the fireplace with water to receive the rice that is to be boiled and distributed among religious mendicants, or offered in the temple, பொங்கற்பானைக்குமா விலைசெருகியகயிறுகட்ட. உலைகாயவைக்க, inf. To set the rice-pot on the fire filled with water to be heated. உலைகொதிக்க, inf. To boil as water when placed on the fire for cooking, &c. உலைக்களம், s. A smith's forge, கொல்லனுலையிடம். உலைக்குறடு, s. A smith's tongs, இரும்பெடுக்குங்குறடு. உலைத்தண்ணீர்--உலைநீர், s. Water set over the fire for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்ய வைக்குந்தண்ணீர். 2. Water used by the smith in the work of the forge, இரும்பு தோய்க்குநீர். உலைத்துருத்தி, s. A smith's bellows, உலையூதுந்துருத்தி. உலைமுகம், s. A smith's furnace or the centre of the forge, கொல்லனுலையி டம். உலைமூக்கு, s. The hole in the forge in which the bellows are inserted, கொல் லனுலைநாசி. உலைமூடி, s. The cover of a pot used for heating water, உலைப்பானையின் மேல்மூடி. ஊரைவாய்மூடவுலைமூடியில்லை. There is no lid that will cover the country. உலைமூட்ட, inf. To construct a forge and make it ready for work, கொல்லனுலையாயத்தம்பண்ண. 2. To make a fire in the smith's forge, கொல்லனுலை யில்நெருப்புமூட்ட. 3. To make a fire for cooking, அடுப்புமூட்ட. உலைமூட்டினாலுண்டுலகு. If the smith construct the forge, the world will stand. உலையாணிக்கோல், s. A smith's poker, beak-iron, உலையிருப்புக்கோல். 2. A branding-iron, சுட்டுக்கோல். உலையில்வெந்தவிரும்பு, s. Iron well burnt in a smith's forge. உலையேற்ற--உலைவைக்க, inf. To set a pot on the fire, உலைப்பானையையடுப்பி லேவைக்க. அவன்என்தலைக்குஉலைவைக்கிறான். He puts a rice-pot on the fire for my head; i. e. he meditates my ruin. இன்னமுலைவைக்கவில்லை. The rice-pot has not yet been set on the fire. 28)

uẕu (p. 67) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், உழ, v. a. To plough, ஏருழ. 2. [with the impersonal terminations.] To root up--as pigs, நிலத்தைக்கிளைக்க. பன்றிநிலத்தையெல்லாமுழுதுபோட்டது. The hogs have ploughed up all the field. உழக்கோல், s. A goad used to drive oxen when ploughing. உழத்தி, s. (plu. உழத்தியர்.) A female of the ploughman caste. See உழவர். உழத்திப்பாட்டு, s. A kind of poem. See பள்ளு. உழுதகாடு, s. A ploughed highland. உழுதநிலம், s. Ploughed land. உழுதுண்போர், s. Those who cultivate fields belonging to others and subsist upon a share of the produce. 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். உழுதுண்டுவாழ்வாரேவாழ்வார்மற்றெல்லாந்தொ ழுதுண்டுபின்செல்பவர். Those who till the ground enjoy plenty and happiness, the rest being followers and servants of the great depend on their assistance. (குறள்.) தொழுதூண்சுவையிலுழுதூணினிது. To cultivate ground and live by it is more satisfactory than to procure maintenance from others by serving them. உழுதுபுழுதியாக்க, inf. To plough and harrow, to waste. உழுபடை, s. A plough, கலப்பை; [ex படை, implements.] உழுவளைப்பு, s. The turnings in ploughing, தொழுப்பு. உழவு, v. noun. Ploughing, உழு கை. 2. (fig.) (p.) Agriculture, husbandry, tillage, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவின்மிகுத்தஊதியமில்லை. There is no occupation which yields greater profit than agriculture. உழவடைக்க, inf. To make over to another a piece of land for purposes of cultivation. உழவர்--உழவோர், s. Ploughmen, cultivators, agriculturists, husbandmen, inhabitants of agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். 3. (p.) [ex உழப்பு.] Warriors, heroes, படைவீரர். உழவிடை, s. Cessation from ploughing. உழவீரம், s. Condition of the ground when it is sufficiently moist to be ploughed. உழவுகட்ட, inf.
