aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

An ancient king of Delhi called துரியோதனன், whose banner was a serpent. அரவச்சுடிகை, s. A snake's crest found chiefly on the head of the cobra. 30) *

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

aṟu (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To cut off, part asunder, cut or break off as a string, வெட்ட. 2. To reap, நென்முதலியனவரிய. 3. To disjoin by cutting or untying--as the marriage string, to separate, sever, நீக்க. 4. To extirpate, exterminate, வேரோடழிக்க. 5. To saw asunder, வாளாலறுக்க. 6. To kill by severing the wind-pipe of beasts, &c., to slay, கழுத் தறுக்க. 7. To burrow, excavate, form subterraneous passages, வளைதோண்ட. 8. To mould bricks, செங்கல்லறுக்க. 9. with கண க்கு.] To settle accounts, தீர்க்க. 1. [with வகை.] To explain, define things clearly, finish a dispute, தீர்மானிக்க. (c.) அறுத்தகோழி துடிக்குமாப்போல். Agitated (with sorrow, anxiety, &c.,) as a fowl with its throat cut. அறுத்தறுத்தப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks distinctly. 2. He speaks decisively. 3. He uses cutting words. தடையறுத்துக்கொடுப்பேன். I will remove the obstacles, obviate objections, break the enchantments which prevent success --as in fishing, &c. வீரனுமவன்றலையறுத்தான். And Veeran cut off his head. இருளறுத்தெழுங்கதிர். The rising sun which exterminates the darkness. அறுமணை, s. An instrument for cutting vegetables, fish, &c. 2. A slut, slatterer. 3. A woman ugly or deformed in features. (c.) அறுவடை, v. noun. The act of reaping the corn. அறுவரி, s. A tax paid at fixed times. அறுவிதி, s. Decision. வழக்கறுக்க, inf. To decide a case. ஆடறுக்க, inf. To slay sheep. அறுப்பு, v. noun. Sundering, separating, cutting a part, reaping, &c., அரிகை. 2. A piece, section, அறுத்ததுண்டு. 3. An imprecation of widowhood--in allusion to the sundering of the marriage ornament at the death of the husband, தாலியறுக்கை. 4. The opening of a wound, an open cut, &c., அறுவாய். 5. The opening made in sawing a piece of timber, மரமுதலியவையினறுவாய். 6. Confutation, refutation of another's arguments, ஆட்சேபிக்கை. அறுப்புக்காலம், s. The time of harvest. அறுப்புண்க, inf. To be cut asunder, to be divided, be severed by cutting. 56)

Vishnu, who when an infant in his ninth incarnation, suckled the breast of Puthaky (பூதகி) a female demon, so as to kill her at last, கிருஷ்ணன். 25)

aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

aẕi (p. 32) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To blight, blast, ruin, கெடுக்க. 2. To waste, injure, damage, பாழாக்க. 3. To abolish, consume, annihilate, destroy. demolish, exterminate, சங்கரிக்க. 4. To efface, obliterate, குலைக்க. 5. To refute an argument. கண்டிக்க. தேடாதழிக்கிற்பாடாய்முடியும். If you spend what you have not earned, you will suffer. (ஔவை.) கருவழித்திடலுநன்றே. It would be better to destroy the foetus, (to cause abortion.) வறிதினழித்திடார். They will waste nothing in vain. (காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. To render aid--as to a sick person, to help one in distress, துன்புற்றோ ரைக்காக்க. 3. To console, ஆற்ற. ஆற்றுவிக்க, inf. [causal.] To console, cherish, afford consolation, தணி யச்செய்ய. 2.
