Root or primitive of a word, the radical, முதனிலை. 5. A line in poetry, செய்யுளினோருறுப்பு. (See உறுப்பு). 6. A man's foot, கால். 7. A measure, twelve inches the length of a person's foot, also of a pace, step, ஓர்வகையளவு. 8. The print of a foot-step, foot-print, vestige, காற்சுவடு. 9. The sole of a sandal, shoe, &c., மிதியடியினடி. 1. Vicinity, neighborhood, nearness, proximity, சமீபம். 11. Underside, lower part, கீழ். (பஞ். 24.)-Note. There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. A small moulding in carpenter's, or mason's work, சித்திரக்கம்பி. 5. Saltpetre, வெடியுப்பு. 6. [in slang language.] Money (com. காசு). கம்பியுந்தாலியும். The marriage symbol with the wire on which it is strung as worn by the idol, the name is also given to the symbol worn by women. கம்பிகட்ட, inf. To make the border of a cloth--as a dyer. 2. To make a narrow moulding. 3. To pass the wire through the bones in an umbrella. கம்பிக்கடுக்கன், s. An ear-ring formed of a bent wire, ஓர்கடுக்கன். கம்பிக்கரை, s. A narrow stripe, commonly silver, in a border. கம்பிக்காரன், s. A monied man. கம்பிச்சேலை, s. A cloth for women with a striped border. கம்பிநீட்ட, inf. To lengthen a piece of metal by beating or otherwise. 2. (Met.) To go off slily, to steal away, to take to one's heels. கம்பிப்பிசின், s. A kind of wiry medicinal gum. கம்பிமணி, s. A kind of necklace made of wire, ஓர்மணி. கம்பியச்சு, s. A wire-mould, கம்மி யர்கருவியிலொன்று. கம்பியிழுக்க, inf. To draw wire. கம்பியுப்பு, s. Salt-petre of a superior quality in bars or pieces, ஒருப்பு. கம்பிவளைக்க, inf. To draw a wire flat. கம்பிவாங்க, inf. To go off slily, to steal away, ஓடிப்போக (colloquial or jesting language). கம்பிவிறிசு, s. A fire-work which ejects its contents in pencils of light. ஈர்க்குக்கம்பி--கம்பிக்குறி, s. A small stripe in cloth. பட்டைக்கம்பி, s. A large stripe. இருப்புக்கம்பி, s. Iron wire. வெண்கலக்கம்பி, s. Brass wire. கடலைக்கம்பி, s. Poetry is of four kinds, viz.: 1. ஆசுகவி, an extemporaneous poem made by request, the theme, the kind of verse and some of the rhetorical figures to be wrought into it being given. 2. மதுரகவி, a poem in which sublime and gratifying ideas are couched in rich language, with varied appropriate rhymes and rhetorical figures, and all in a sweet flowing style. 3. சித்திரகவி, a poem variously of artfully composed. (See மிறைக் கவி.) 4. வித்தாரகவி, an extended poem, such as the great epics Ramayana and Bharata.--Note. Each of these four is also applied to the poet as well as to the poem. கவிகட்ட--கவிபாட inf. kuḷḷam (p. 131) s. Shortness is stature, கு றள். 2. Wickedness, mischievousness, cruelty, கொடுமை. 3. Fraudulent dexterity, craft, cunning, தந்திரோபாயம். Wils. p. 274. KHULLA. குள்ளன், s. (fem. குள்ளி.) A short man, குறளன். 2. An artful, cunning fellow, தந்திரக்காரன். 3. A cruel, mischievous person, கொடியன். குள்ளனைக்கொண்டாழம்பார்க்கிறான். He at-He attempts to find out the depth (of water) by sending (into it) a dwarf--said of one who employs a person unfit for his business. கள்ளன்பின்போனாலுங் குள்ளன்பின்போகப்படா து. Better is it to follow a thief than a dwarf--meaning it is a bad omen. குள்ளக்கெண்டை, s. A kind of fish. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A dwarf. 2. A cunning fellow, தந்திரி.
