acai (p. 7) s. An-expletive, அசைநிலை. 2. Accent, இசைப்பிரிவு. 3. (c.) The cud, இரை மீட்பு. 4. (p.) Metrical syllable, செய்யுளுறுப்பா றினொன்று. There are two kinds of அசை, viz. (a.) நேரசை, when there is a single syllable, ஓரலகு. 1. When there is a long vowel, as ஆ. 2. When the vowel is short, as ழி. 3. When the short vowel is joined with a mute, as வெள். 4. When the long vowel is joined with a mute, as வேல். (b.) நிரையசை, When there is a compound syllable, ஈரலகு. 1. When two short vowels are joined, as வெறி. 2. When a short and long vowel are joined, as சுறா. 3. When two short vowels are joined with a mute, as in நிறம். 4. When a short and long vowel are joined with a mute, as விளாம். அசைச்சீர், s. A foot of one syllable, as நாள் and மலர். அசைச்சொல்--அசைநிலை, s. An expletive, அசைநிலைச்சொல். அசைபோட--அசையிட--அசை வெட்ட, inf. To chew the cud, to ruminate. அசையடி, s. One of the members of கலிப்பா. கலிப்பாவினோருறுப்பு. அசையந்தாதி, s. A poem in which the last syllable of one verse and the first of the succeeding are the same. 2)

ā (p. 34) . The second vowel of the alphabet, இரண்டாமுயிரெழுத்து. 2. A contraction of the infinitive ஆக, to become--as பெண் ணாப்பிறந்தவள், one become (born) a woman. 3. s. A neat, a cow or bull, பசுப்பொது. 4. A cow, பெண்பசு. 5. A she buffalo, பெண் ணெருமை. 6. A she elk, gayal, பெண்ம ரை. 7. An interjection of pity, regret, pain, desire, contempt, admiration, இரக்கச் சொல். 8. A particle expressive of eager desire, gaping for a thing--as, ஆவென்றுதிரிகி றான், he wanders in quest of what he can get. (See ஆவெனல்.) 9. An affix of interrogation, வினா--as விழித்தானா? is he awake? 1. The termination of the neg. neut. plural of verbs, எதிர்மறை யஃறிணைப் பன்மைவி குதி--as, அவைசெல்லா, they will not go. 11. A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

ācai (p. 37) s. Desire, attachment, strong inclination, விருப்பம். 2. Avarice, lust, cupidity, concupiscence, இச்சை. (c.) 3. (p.) A quarter, region, any of the eight points of the compass, திசை. Wils. p. 124. ASHA. 4. Gold, treasure, பொன்.--Note. The desires of the senses are supposed to be all comprised in மண், பெண் and பொன்--as மண்ணாசை, the desire of land or dominion. 2. பெண்ணாசை, lust or sexual desires. 3. பொன்னாசை, desire of wealth, avarice. ஆசைகாட்ட, inf. To present a bait, attraction, to excite desire, allure. ஆசைகொள்ள--ஆசைப்பட, inf. To desire, yield to the first impressions of love, desire sexually. ஆசைபுகட்ட--ஆசைபூட்ட, inf. To engross the affections, captivate, ensnare, ஆசையிற்சிக்கச்செய்ய. ஆசைப்பெருக்கம், s. Cupidity, lust, strong desire, அவா. ஆசைப்பேச்சு, 3. Flattery, தித்திக் கப்பேசும்பேச்சு. 2. Persuasive speech, வச மாக்கும்பேச்சு. ஆசைமருந்திட, inf. To administer a love potion, give a philter, தன்வசமாக்க மருந்திட. ஆசையறுக்க, inf. To extinguish the desires or passions--one of the four good qualities, விருப்பொழிக்க. ஆசைவைக்க, inf. To desire, long for, place the affections on an object. 11)

aiym (p. 80) s. Doubt, hesitation, uncertainty, indecision, suspense, scepticism, terms or probability, possibility, and any thing short of positive certainty are included, சந்தேகம். 2. (p.) Alms, charity, பிச்சை. 3. A beggar's vessel or shell, இரப்போர்கலம். 4. Phlegm--one of the humors of the body, சிலேட்டுமம். 5. Doubt, surprise, &c.--as one of the துறை, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று-as, போதோவிசும்போபுனலோபணிகளது பதியோ யா தோவறிகுவதேதுமரிது, whether the place the damsel occupies is a lotus flower, the world of the gods, water, or the world of serpents, it is difficult to determine. ஐயம்புகினுஞ் செய்வினைசெய். Though you go abegging, perform your duties. (ஔ வை.) ஐயகணசூலை, s. An arthritic disease arising from phlegm and heat, ஆறுசூலையிலொன்று. ஐயக்காட்சி, s. An object of subject exciting doubt, indistinct perception, problematical or hypothetical terms, அதுவோவிதுவோவெனக்காண்கை. (See காட்சி.) 2. Doubt, சந்தேகம். ஐயக்காரன், s. A beggar, a mendicant, பிச்சைக்காரன். ஐயக்கிளவி, s. Terms or particles of doubt or uncertainty, commonly found in interrogative expressions, ஐய மொழி--such as ஆ, ஏ, ஓ, கொல், யா, &c. ஐயநாடி, s. One of the three states of the pulse--that in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent in the system, சிலேட்டுமநாடி. See நாடி. ஐயப்பட, inf. To doubt, hesitate. ஐயப்படாமை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from doubt and fear, certainty, undauntedness, சந்தேகங்கொள்ளாமை. 2. One of the eight அறத்துறுப்பு. See உறுப்பு. ஐயப்பாடு, s. Doubt, uncertainty, indecision, apprehension, suspense, சந் தேகம். ஐயமறுக்க, inf. One of the five kinds of questions which are proposed to remove doubt from the mind, சந்தேக நிவர்த்திசெய்ய. ஐயமிட, inf. To give alms, பிச் சையிட. ஐயமிட்டுண். Give alms before you eat. ஐயமுற, inf. To doubt, சந்தேகம டைய. ஐயமேலிட, inf. To be in a great doubt, சந்தேகமதிகரிக்க. 2. To have the rattles in the throat--as a dying person, சிலேட்டுமமேலிட. ஐயவணி, s. A figure in rhetoric-as where doubt is entertained as to whether a thing which bears analogy to another is identical with or distinct from it--as தாதளவிவண்டுதடுமாறுந்தாமரைகொ ல் மாதர்விழியுலவும் வாண்முகங்கொல். I doubt whether it is the face of a woman or a lotus flower, since it resembles so much the latter. ஐயவதிசயம், s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவும்மை, s. A particle showing uncertainty, doubt. See உம். ஐயவுவமை, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயுற, inf. To doubt, hesitate, to be undecided, to suspect, to be in suspense, சந்தேகமடைய. சக்கரஞ்சுற்றுகின்றமைகண்டையுற்று. Wondering at the sight of the whirling discus. பக்கத்தார்யாரையுமையுறுதல். Suspecting all neighbors. (நீதிநெறி.) ஐயுறல்--ஐயுறவு, v. noun. Doubting, apprehension, suspicion, சந்தேகம். ஐயுறுத்த, inf. To cause or excite doubt, to induce apprehension, ஐயமுறுத்த. 22)

olli (p. 84) s. A thin person, ஒல்லியா னவன். 2. Thinness, being reduced, மென்மை. 3. [prov.] An empty, blighted cocoanut, உட்பசையில்லாததேங்காய். 4. A broomstick, து டைப்பம். ஒல்லிக்காய்ச்சி, s. A tree that yields, or has yielded blighted cocoanuts. ஒல்லித்தேங்காய்--ஒல்லிமேய்ந்ததே ங்காய், s. [prov.] A blighted, empty cocoanut used as a help in swimming. ஒல்லிமேய, inf. To grow empty, to be blighted as cocoanuts. ஒல்லியாள், s. A thin person, ஒல் லியானவன். 2)

To be natural, artless. சுபாவமானநடக்கை, s. Upright conduct. சுபாவமாய்ப்போக, inf. To become habituated to a thing or action. (c.) சுபாவமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak sincerely, soberly, seriously, not in jest. 2. To speak the simple truth without coloring. (c.) சுபாவமுத்தி, s. Absolute bliss, complete salvation, perfect liberation from births and all their attendant evils, as attainable by the ஞானி, or religionist of the highest degree, and as differing from the inferior states of bliss attained by the other three orders, those not being lasting. Cunning or artful language. தந்திரர், s. (plu.) Gantharuvas, or celestial musicians, கந்தருவர். தந்திரவாதம், s. The art of disputation. தந்திரவாதி, s. To carry, சுமக்க. 6. To maintain, sustain by food, ஆதரிக்க. 7. To protect, to guard, காக்க. 8. To pole a boat, தோணி தள்ள. 9. To treat tenderly. with great kindness as a child or a friend, பராமரிக்க. 1. To solicit cringingly, கெஞ்ச. 11. To press against to strike, to graze a boil so as to cause pain, ஊன்ற. 12. To halt in speaking or walking, நிறுத்த. (c.) இந்தப்போசனம்சீவனத்துக்குத்தாங்காது. This food will not support life. காற்றுக்குத்தாங்காது. It will not bear the wind. என்னாலேஅவ்வளவுகொடுக்கத்தாங்காது. I cannot afford to give so much. அவன்அடிதாங்குவான். He can endure blows. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடுகொடுத்துத்தாங்காது. No one can afford to feed him. காலைத்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The animal limps in walking. அவனையேதாங்கிக்கொண்டுதிரிகிறான். He pleases him, to gain his own purpose. அவன்கையைத்தாங்கு. Ward off his hand, his blow, &c. மறுமொழிச்சொல்லித்தாங்காது. There is no end of answering such questions. [prov.] சரீரந்தாங்காது. The constitution will not hear it. தாங்கித்தாங்கிப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks haltingly. மாடுகால்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The bullock hobbles (by pain in the hoof). தாங்கத்தாங்கத்தலையிலேற. To become the more arrogant, the more kindness is shown. 2. To be supercilious on account of humble applications. மலையைமலைதாங்கவேண்டும்மண்ணாங்கட்டிதாங்கு மா. One moutain supports another, can a clod of earth do it? விஞ்சையிற்றாங்கினன் சடையன் வெண்ணெய்யிற் தஞ்சமென்றோர்களைத்தாங்குந்தன்மைபோல். (Nalan) upheld, by charms (the mountain), as Sadaiyan of Truvennainallur supported those who came to him for refuge. (இராமா.) தாங்கமாட்டான். One unable to endure. தாங்குகோல், s. [prov.] A boat-men's pole, தோணிதாங்குகோல். தாங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To bear in mind, to brook. 2. To sustain sickness, adversity, &c. தாங்கிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry in the arms. 2. To receive and treat very civilly or politely. 3. To escort or conduct, as a lady by the arm. 4. To solicit very urgently. தாங்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To bear. 2. To ward off, to screen, &c. 3. To maintain, to support. 4. To endure, சகிக்க. தாங்கித்தடுக்கிட, inf. To treat very tenderly; (lit.) to bear one up and spread a mat for him. (c.) தாங்கிவெட்ட, inf. To cut or hew lightly. கைதாங்கியடிக்க, inf. To beat or strike lightly. கைதாங்கியுழ, inf. To plough lightly. தாங்கல், v. noun. Bearing, supporting. சுமத்தல். 2. A grievance, விசனப்படுகை. 3. Displeasure, regret, umbrage, மனக் குறை. (c.) அவர்உன்மேலே மெத்தவுந்தாங்கலாயிருக்கிறார். He is much grieved with you. மனத்தாங்கல், v. noun. Want of cordiality. தாங்கல்வருத்துவிக்க, inf. To offend one. தாங்கி, appel. n. A support, prop, defence, ஆதாரம், as கைதாங்கி, சுமைதாங்கி, தீத் தாங்கி, மண்டாங்கி, which see. 2. A ferrule, பூண். 3. A golden ferrule put on the end of an elephant's tusk, கிம்புரி. 4. A fastening for an ornament, பணிப்பூட்டு. குடிதாங்கி. One who supports his family or others. தாங்கு, v. noun. [prov.] Bearing, supporting, as தாங்கல். 2. A support, as தாங்கி. 3. A staff of pike, ஈட்டிக்காம்பு. 16) *

tikku (p. 237) s. (Sa. Dik.) Region, quarter, point of the compass, direction, திசை. 2. Protection, shelter, aid, ஆதரவு. (c.) எனக்குத்திக்குமில்லைத்திசையுமில்லை. I have no support whatever. திக்குத்திசைதெரியாதஇருட்டு. Darkness so great that one knows not the points of compass or which way to go. திக்குநோக்கித்தெண்டனிடல். Making obeisance toward the place where a person is-a term of respect or reverence used in epistolary writings. திக்கெல்லாம்வெடிபடப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks loud enough to disturb all the points of compass. அஷ்டதிக்கு, s. The eight points of the compass are: 1. கிழக்கு, East. 2. தென் கிழக்கு, South-east. 3. தெற்கு, South. 4. தென்மேற்கு. South-west. 5. மேற்கு, West 6. வடமேற்கு, North-west. 7. வடக்கு, North. 8. வடகிழக்கு, North-east. Some add two others விசும்பு, the heavens or etherial regions, and பாதாளம், the abyss. தசதிக்கு--தசதிசை, s. The ten points for astrological purposes especially in choosing spots for building houses, &c., are named after certain animals. 1. கிழக்கு. கருடதிசை. 2. தென்கிழக்கு. பூனை த்திசை. 3. தெற்கு. சிங்கத்திசை. 4. தென்மேற்கு. கனகதிசை. 5. மேற்கு. நாகதிசை. 6. வடமே ற்கு, எலித்திசை. 7. வடக்கு. யானைத்திசை. 8. வடகிழக்கு. முயற்றிசை. 9. விசும்புத்திசை. 1. பாதாளத்திசை, which see.--Note The animals of the opposite points are natural foes to each other, the one being pursuer, and the other, the pursued. திக்கடைப்பு--திக்கெல்லை, s. [prov.] Boundaries of land, as mentioned in title deeds. திக்கற்றவன், appel. n. A forlorn, destitute, forsaken person. திக்காக, inf. [adverbiality.] In the direction of, toward. கிழக்குத்திக்காகப்போ. Go directly east. திக்காதிக்கு--திக்காலுக்கு, [prov.] In various directions, here and there, பலதிசையிலும். திக்காலுக்கொருத்தராய்ப்போய்விட்டார்கள். They are gone, are scattered in various directions. திக்கியானை, s. The elephants of the eight cardinal points, male and female supporters of the earth are:-1. East Male ஐராவதம். Female அப்பிரமை. 2. North. ,, சாருவபூமம். ,, அஞ்சனை. 8. N. E. ,, சுப்பிரதீபம். ,, அஞ்சனாவதி. திக்குக்கட்ட--திசைகட்ட, inf. To bind or fortify the cardinal points by turning to each point, repeating the incantation, as இந்திராயநம, and prostrating in worship, to the regent whose protection is sought; then turning to the next point. திக்குக்கட்டு--திக்குப்பந்தனம், v. noun. Fortifying one's self on all sides by incantations, invoking the protection of the regents of the cardinal points. திக்குநோக்க, inf. To look in any direction, as expecting a friend, &c. 2. To direct one's course to any point. திக்குப்பாலகர்--திசாபாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, as protectors of the earth, situated beyond the seventh circumambient sea, and invoked in the daily worship, &c. 1. இந்திரன், Indra, regent of the south-east, whose sign is இடி, the thunderbolt. 2. அக்கினி, Agni, regent of the south, east whose sign is புகை, smoke. 3. இயமன், Yama, regent of the south, whose sign is சிங்கம், lion. 4. நிருதி, Niruti, regent of the south-west, whose sign is நாய், a dog. 5. வருணன், Varuna, god of the waters, regent of the west, whose sign is இடபம், a bull. 6. வாயு, Vayu, god of the wind, regent of the north-west. whose sign is கழுதை, an ass. 7. குபேரன், Kuvera, god of riches, regent of the north, whose sign is யானை, an elephant. 8. ஈசானன், Isanan, regent of the northeast, whose sign காகம், a crow. திக்குப்பலி--திக்குப்பூசை, s. Performing puja. around a temple, toward the eight points, to obtain the protection of their regents. திக்குப்பல்லி, s. The chirping of a lizard, as indicating good or ill, according to the direction on which it is heard. திக்குமாறாட்டம், v. noun. Confusion concerning the points of compass, as திசைமயக்கு. திக்குவிசயம், s. Conquering all regions. திக்குவிசயம்பண்ண, inf. To conquer hostile powers. திக்குளார், s. Owners of boundary lands. 27)

tīṭcai (p. 242) --தீக்ஷை--தீக்கை, s. Initiation of disciple into the Siva religion by a Guru, who with appropriate ceremonies communicates the appointed mantras; also his introduction to any higher stage or degree in the system; குரூபதேசம். 2. Special means employed by a Guru for the instruction and mental illumination of a disciple; intended for the removal of his sins, and the ripening of his soul for emancipation, ஞானபோதனை. 3. The imparting of spiritual illumination to a soul ripening for absorption; its accumulated stock of merit and demerit--the results of former actions--together with its original மலம்--the source of these actions--being nearly exhausted by the joys and sufferings experienced in its former transmigrations, பக்குவான்மாவைக்க ரையேற்றல். 4. There are seven kinds of தீட்சை. 1. சட்சுதீட்சை, சயனதீட்சை, by the eye or by looking on the disciple for the dispersion of his mental darkness and moral evils, and the communication of spiritual light. 2. பரிசதீட்சை, by the touch, or placing the right hand on the disciple's head, and touching five principle parts of his body, thus conferring on him the virtue of the five lettered incantations. 3. வாக்குத்தீட்சை, வாசகதீட்சை, oral instruction, and illumination. 4. மானசதீட்சை, by the mind or intense interest felt for the disciple, leading to the enlightening of his mind, &c. 5. சாத்திரதீட்சை, நூற்றீட்சை, spiritual illumination by means of the shastras. 6. யோகதீட்சை, பாவனதீட்சை, instruction by example, in character of the silent, motionless ascetic, in the eight postures prescribed. (See யோகம்.) 7. அ வுத்திரிதீட்சை, imparting instruction by symbolic figures, made on the ground, &c. This last is two-fold, ஞானாவுத்திரி, and கிரியாவுத்திரி.--Note. There are two other kinds of தீட்சை; 1. சபீசதீட்சை, instruction that has reference to future rites to make them complete; 2. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, instruction complete in itself. சிவதீட்சை--சைவதீட்சை, 3 The three stated introductory rites of the Saiva system. 1. சமயதீட்சை, the initiatory rite of discipleship. 2. விசேஷதீட்சை, special rite confirming the disciple, after which he eats in private, or unseen by those of lower degree, and his eligible to read, and receive instruction in the Agama mysteries. It is administered only to சைவர், who eat no flesh or fish. 3. நிருவா ணதீட்சை, the highest rite entitling the disciple to perform puja, to sit and eat with his Guru, and to enjoy all the privileges of the system. தீட்சதர், s. (plu.) Persons who have received the initiatory, or any succeeding rite of the Saiva religion, தீட்சைபெற் றோர். 2. The brahmans of சிதம்பரம், formerly said to have been three-thousand, தில்லைமூவாயிரவர். தீட்சதன், s. A disciple who has received the தீட்சை. தீட்சைகேட்க--தீட்சைபெற, inf. To receive தீட்சை of the guru. தீட்சைகொடுக்க--தீட்சைபண்ண--தீட் சைவைக்க, inf. To administer தீட்சை. தீட்சைபெற்றவன், appel. n. (neg. தீட் சையில்லாதவன்.) One who has received தீட்சை, to whom the secrets of religion may be communicated. 16)

teṉ (p. 257) adj. South, southern, தெற்குத் திசை. தென்கடல், s. The southern sea, தெற் குச்சமுத்திரம். தென்கயிலாயம், s. The southern Kaylasa, the feigned favorite abode of Siva. தென்கரை, s. A name for the town of Periacolom, as தென்கரைதாலுகா, (Govt. usage.) தென்கலை, s. Southern literature; i. e. Tamil, தமிழ். 2. As தென்கலையார். தென்கலைத்திருமண், s. A sacred earth used by தென்கலையார், in marking their foreheads,--Note. They extend the middle mark below the other two to the bridge of the nose. தென்கலையார், s. A sect of Vishnuvas who maintain diferent tenets from the வடகலையார். தென்கால்--தென்காற்று, s. The gentle south wind. தென்கிழக்கு--தென்கீழ், s. South-east. தென்கீழ்த்திசை, s. The south-east region. தென்கீழ்த்திசைப்பாலன்--தென்கீழ்த்தி சையிறை, s. The regent of the southeast, அக்கினிதேவன். தென்குமரி, s. A sacred river that disembogues itself near Cape Comorin. ஓர்நதி. 2. Cape Comorin named after the river. தென்கோடு, s. The southern horn of the crescent moon, the word for moon being understood. See வடகோடு. தென்சார்--தென்பக்கம், s. Southern side, parts or region, &c., தென்பரதம், s. One of the four கண் டம், as தென்பாரதம். தென்பாண்டி, s. The district south of Madura. See தமிழ். தென்பாரதம், s. The southern division of India. See பாரதம். தென்பாரிசம்--தென்பால், s. The southern side or region. தென்பாரிசத்தார், s. Inhabitants of the southern regions. தென்புலம், s. The region or world of the deceased, பிதிர்கள்வாழுமிடம். 2. A corn-field lying to the south. தென்புலத்தார், s. The manes or souls of the deceased, supposed to be in the south. தென்புறம், s. As தென்பக்கம். தென்பூமி, s. Southern parts of India, any part south of Mount Meru, மேரு வின்றென்பால். 2. The southern parts of the earth. தென்மதுரை, s. South Madura, as distinguished from வடமதுரை, north Madura, ஆலவாய். தென்மலை, s. The southern mountain Pothiya, supposed to be the residence of Agastia, பொதியம். 2. As சோலைமலை. தென்மலையாளம், s. South Travancore. தென்முகம், s. Facing the south, southern direction. தென்முனை, s. South pole. தென்மேல்--தென்மேற்கு, s. South-west. தென்மேற்றிசை, s. The south-west region. தென்மேற்றிசைப்பாலன், s. The regent of the south-west, நிருதி. தென்விதேகம், s. One of the nine divisions of the known continent. See கண் டம். தென்றமிழ், s. The Tamil language, as peculiar to the south, செந்தமிழ். தென்றல், s. The south wind, as தென் கால். (c.) 2. The wind of the farmer dewy season, முன்பனிபருவத்தின்காற்று. தென்றல்வீசுகிறது--தென்றலடிக்கிறது. The south-wind blows. தென்றல்திரும்புகிறது. The wind shifts to the south. தென்றல்முற்றிப்பெருங்காற்றாயிற்று. The gentle south wind has risen to a hurricane, i. e. a little affair has become a serious quarrel. தென்றற்றேரோன், s. Kama, whose chariot is the south wind, regarded, as favorable to love, காமன். தென்றி, s. South, தெற்கு. 2. The south-wind, தென்றல். (p.) தென்றிசை, s. South region. தென்றிசைக்கோன்-தென்றிசைப்பாலன், s. Yama, king of the southern region and god of death, இயமன். தென்றேசம், s. The southern region. தென்னன், s. A titular name of the Pandyan dynasty of Madura. தென்னிரேபதம், s. nīccl (p. 277) --நீச்சு, s. [improp.] Swimming as a living creature, நீந்துகை. 2. Water of swimming depth, ஆழம்; [ex நீஞ்சு, v.] (Colloq.) 3. [vul.] A bad smell, fish-smell, மீன்கவிச்சு. அவன்நீச்சுமேலேவந்தான். He came swimming. நீச்சலடிக்க, inf. To swim. இவனுக்குமீசையிலேநீச்சடிக்கவேணும். He will not eat without the smell of fish on his whiskers; i. e. he always eats fish. நீச்சாள், s. A swimmer. நீச்சுக்காரர், s. [pl.] Swimmers. நீச்சுத்தண்ணீர், s. Water of swimming depth. 2. [vul.] As நீராகாரம். நீச்சுநிலை, s. Swimming depth and shallow water நீச்சுநிலையறிய, s. To examine the deep and shallow places; i. e. to investigate a business. 2. To examine position. நீச்சுப்பழக, inf. To practise swimming, to learn to swim. நீச்சுப்பழக்க, s. To teach one to swim. மீன்குஞ்சுக்குநீச்சுப்பழக்குவாருண்டோ.
