A kind of play in writing, arranging letters in a fanciful manner, மிறைக்கவியி லொன்று. அக்கரவிலக்கணம்--அட்சரலட்ச ணம், s. The properties, forms, names, powers, &c. of letters, orthography. 2. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், ex இலக் கணம். அக்கராரம்பம்--அட்சராரம்பம், s. Beginning to teach a child the letters of the alphabet, with appropriate ceremonies, on the fifth year. 46) *

akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. akkiyāṉam (p. 4) s. [priv. அ et கியா னம் for ஞானம்.] Ignorance, lack of wisdom, destitution of spiritual knowledge. See அஞ்ஞானம். அக்கியானி, s. An ignorant person, one destitute of the knowledge of God; as அஞ்ஞானி. 8) *

acuvam (p. 6) s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) அசுவகந்தி, s. A medicinal shrub, as அமுக்கிரா, having the smell of a horse. அசுவகந்திசூரணம், s. The medicinal root of that plant. அசுவகந்திதையிலம், s. An ointment from the oil of this root. அசுவசாத்திரம், s. Horsemenship as a science, அசுவபரிட்சை. அசுவதாட்டி, s. The swiftness of a horse, குதிரையின்வேகம். அசுவத்தாமன், s. One of the seven சிரஞ்சீவியர், which see, துரோணன்மகன். (c.) அசுவபரி, s. A shrub, அலரி. (p.) அசுவபரிட்சை--அசுவபரீக்ஷை, s. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். The knowledge of the good or bad qualities of a horse. 2. The act of trying the animal. அசவமேதம், s. The sacrifice of a horse, as practiced by former Hindu kings, ஓர்யாகம். அசுவலட்சணம், s. aññattuvam (p. 7) s. [priv. அ.] Ignorance, destitution of spiritual knowledge, ஞானமின்மை. Wils. p. 13. ANGNATVA. 48) *

aññāṉam (p. 7) s. [priv. அ.] Ignorance, spiritual ignorance, worldly illusion, belief in external appearances, destitution of the knowledge of the true God. This is the state of the soul from the beginning, and its condition till its மலம் is removed. When the fruits of its former actions are worked out, in sufferings and enjoyments, the soul begins to be enlightened by the grace of the Deity, its அஞ்ஞா னம் then ceases, and ஞானம் commences, increases and ripens for its union with the Deity. Explanatory notes on a chapter in a literary work. அதிகாரவுரை, s. One of the fourteen subdivisions of விருத்தியுரை. அதிகாரன்--அதிகாரி, s. Superintendent, director, ruler, master, one in authority, a superior, மேல்விசாரணைக் காரன். அதிகாரி--அதிகாரிகன் s. [in grammar.] One of the eleven subjects treated of in the introduction of a book, கற் போன். (See பாயிரம்.) 2. [in philosophy, literature, &c.] The persons, for whom a work is written, as it regards competency, eligibility, worthiness, &c., as the ஞானநூல் for such as act up to the prescribed rules. The persons are three, கருமகாண்டி, பத்திகாண்டி, ஞானகாண்டி, who are the principal, and the following eight who are subordinates, கருமி, முமூட்சு, அப்பியாசி, அனுபவி, ஆரூடன், விவேகி, விரத்தன், தேவகதியன். 54) *

aṉṉuvylilkkṇm (p. 34) s. The specialities of grammatical construction, embracing five particulars; viz.: 1. விசேடணம், qualifying terms. 2. விசேடியம், the thing qualified. 3. கருத்தா, the agent. 4. கருமம், the object. 5. கிரியை, the action or attribute-as அருளுடையஞானிகதியடைந் தான். The pious devotee obtained bliss; wherein the first term அருளுடைய is வி சேடனம், ஞானி is விசேடியம் and கருத்தா, கதி is கருமம், and அடைந்தான், the verb or கிரியை. 17)

(உப. 157.) அபரபக்ஷம்--அபரபக்கம்--அபர பட்சம், s. The second fortnight of the moon, the moon in its decrease, தேய் பிறை. அபரமுத்தி, s. An inferior heaven, பதமுத்தி. அபரராத்திரம், s. The last watch, கடைச்சாமம். Wils. p. 44. APARARATRA. அபரவயசு, s. Advanced age. (தீ. 229.) அபரவாக்கியம், s. A resulting equation, or correction following a calculation. 2. [in Hindu Astronomy.] The equation of a given tabular number or argument answering to the preceding one. அபரவிந்து, s. One of the five powers or தத்துவம் of Siva. (உப. 157-158, ஞானவா. 33.) அபராசிதன், s. A name of Siva and Vishnu, (lit.) the unsurpassed. Wils. p. 44. APARAJITA. அபராணம், s. aparōṭcam (p. 16) s. [priv. அ.] Union with the deity, a state of proximity to liberation from births and of absorption in the deity, கடவுளைத்தரிசிக்கை. One of the seven அவத்தை. அபரோட்சஞானம், s. Consciousness, or knowledge of identity with the deity. 20) *

amai (p. 20) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To yield, come to a right state, submit, comply, obey, acquiesce, சம்மதிக்க. 2. To become settled, peaceable, quiet; to subside, படிய. 3. To be at one's disposal, as a thing that may be effected, acquired, brought to good order, &c., வசமாக. 4. To fit, suit, join nicely, be adapted to, இசைய. 5. To be destined, be subject to a divine appointment or destiny, good or bad, விதிக்குட்பட. 6. To be made, formed, adjusted, திருந்த. 7. To be satisfied, contented, composed, comfortable, resigned, திருத்தியாக. 8. (in the third person only) To be enough, sufficient, போ துமாக. 9. To happen, occur, come to pass, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To belong to, be connected or combined with, be appropriate to, பொ ருந்த. 11. To be obtained, அமர. (p.)--Note. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s.
