aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To reiterate. அடுத்ததண்டனை, s. Deserved punishment. அடுத்ததின்றன்மையான்மாவாகும். The associations of the soul determine its character. (In வீராகமம்.) அடுத்தவீடு, s. The next house. அடுத்தார், s. Adherents, relations, சேர்ந்தார். அடுத்தாற்போலே. Very high, next to, near. அடுத்திருந்து கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To kill one by treachery. அடுத்துவர, inf. aṇai (p. 9) s. An artificial bank, dam or ridge for retaining water in fields, வரம்பு. 2. An embankment, causeway, (as Adam's bridge, so called,) அணைக்கட்டு. 3. A bank of a tank, river, sea shore, &c., கரைப்பொது. 4. Pillow, cushion, mattress, மெத்தை. 5. (c.) A support, prop, buttress; anything to recline or lean on, முட்டு. 6. Protection, help, assistance, accessoriness to a crime, &c., உதவி. 7. Accompaniment, attendance, adjunct, துணை. 8. A yoke of oxen with a prefix of number; as, ஓரணை, one yoke of oxen, ஈரணை, two yokes of oxen, மூவணை, three yokes of oxen. வெள்ளம்வருமுன்னேயணைபோடவேண்டும், Before the flood comes and the water rise, we must cast up the dam. அணைக்கட்டு, s. An anicut. அணைசொல், s. A word spoken to assist another, a prompting, துணைச்சொல். 2. An expletive, அசைச்சொல். அணையாடை, s. A clout or strip of cloth put under an infant, ஏணைத்துகில். 2. [local.] Cloth tied over the navel of an infant, தொப்புளிறுக்குஞ்சீலை. பஞ்சணை, s. The five kinds of beds, or mattresses. தலையணை, s. A pillow. புல்லணை, A layer of grass. பூவணை, s. A bed of flowers. முன்னணை, s. A crib, a manger. 2. The court before a house, the hall. 44)

iṭumpai (p. 45) s. Suffering, affliction, distress, calamity, துன்பம். 2. Evil, தீமை. 3. Fear, அச்சம். 4. Poverty, வறுமை. 5. Pride--as one of the eight evil dispositions, விகாரமெட்டிலொன்று. வேண்டுதல்வேண்டாமையிலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கியா ண்டுமிடும்பையில. To those who have adored, at the feet of him who is without desire or aversion, there shall be no suffering for eternity. 101) *

iyngku (p. 47) கிறேன், இயங்கினேன், வேன், இயங்க, v. n. To move, stir, அசைய. 2. To go, walk, நடக்க. 3. To move about, உலாவ. 4. To respire, breathe, மூச்சியங்க. 5. (p.) To appear, be visible, to shine, ஒளிசெய்ய. 6. To abide, தங்க. இயக்கம், v. noun. Motion, locomotion, going, moving, action, அசைவு. 2. Respiration, motion connected with life, பிராணவியக்கம். என்பியக்கங்கண்டும்புறந்தரார். They relinquish not (their austerities) though their very bones protrude. (நீதிநெறி.) எல்லாங்கருத்தாவினியக்கம். iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. They will remain here long. அதுமெய்யென்றிருந்தேன். I thought it was true. அவனிருந்தாகிறதென்ன? அவனிருந்தும்பயனெ ன்ன? Of what use is he? இருக்கை, v. noun. Sitting, உட் கார்ந்திருக்கை. 2. A seat, ஆசனம். 3. Being, a state, or condition of being--chiefly applicable to the human species, இருப்பு. 4. s. (p.) Residence, dwelling, situation, இருப்பிடம். 5. A town, village, ஊர்ப் பொது. இருப்பு, v. noun. Sitting, mode of sitting--as of ascetics, &c., இருக்கை. 2. Being, condition state of being--chiefly of the human species, நிலை. 3. s. Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. The seat, the posteriors, ஆசனம். இருப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To see how mush still remains in the store. 60) *

il (p. 55) . Not, non-existence, death, மரணம். (p.) 2. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. An impossibility, an absurdity, இல்லாதபொருள். இல்பொருளுவமம்--இல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)

uṭmpu (p. 59) s. Body, உடல். 2. The body as assumed by the soul in its transmigrations according to the deeds of former births, உயிர்க்கிருப்பிடம். 3. (p.) A consonant, மெய்யெழுத்து. உடம்பைத்தேற்றிக்கொண்டன்றோயோகத்திலேபோ கவேண்டும். To engage in the austerities of a Yogi, one must strengthen himself by medicine. உடம்புதேற, inf. To be strengthened, to grow strong--as a convalescent person from food, exercise, &c. உடம்புநன்றாயிருக்க, inf. To be well, to be in health. உடம்பெடுக்க, inf. To take a body, to be born, சரீரமெடுக்க. பரிகாசம்பண்ணவும் நிந்திக்கவுமுடம்பெடுத்தான்.. He is born to be mocked and despised. கள்ளனென்றுடம்பெடுத்தவன். One who is born a rogue. உடம்புபுரட்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Rolling or turning about--as infants before they begin to creep. 2. Rubbing off dirt or duct from the body. ஆணுடம்பு, s. The penis. பெண்ணுடம்பு, s. [vul.] Pudendum muliebra. 80)

uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. To fabricate, make a false story, ஏற்படுத்த. வேதம்உண்டுபடுத்தியசீர்த்திவியாதமுனி. Vedaviasar renowned as the compiler of the Vedas. (திருச்.) உண்டுபண்ண, inf. To make, bring into existence. உண்டுபண்ணிவைக்க, inf. To make, to establish, render permanent. 2. To rear plants, &c. 3. To establish one in life. உண்டென, inf. To say it is. 2. [vul. adverbially.] Much, exceedingly, more, நிரம்ப. உண்டெனத்தரவேண்டும். Give me more, give me liberally. 125)

utvu (p. 60) கிறேன், உதவினேன், வேன், உதவ, v. a. To help, aid, assist, benefit, succor, facilitate, கொடுக்க. 2. v. n. To yield, contribute, சகாயமாயிருக்க. 3. To be fit or useful, தகுதியாயிருக்க. உதவாப்பட்சம். When it fails to be serviceable. இதுமருந்துக்குதவும். This will serve for medicine. 2. This will avail as an ingredient for medicine. இந்தக்குடைமழைக்குதவும். This umbrella will be of use in case it rains. இருந்தபணமுமுதவாமற்போயிற்று. Even the money I possessed was not available. ஊர்திகளுமுதவல்வேண்டும். Please to grant me conveyances also. (ஸ்காந்தம்.) தக்கன்மீட்டுமாயிரந்தவச்சிறாரையுதவினான். Daksha again begot a thousand virtuous sons. (ஸ்காந்தம்.) உதவாதவெழுத்து, s. Bad writing. உதவாமற்போக, inf. To be of no service. கைக்குதவ, inf. To be at hand, be accessible, available, to come to hand. கைக்குதவாது. It is not at hand. சமயத்துக்குதவ, inf. To help in an emergency. 2)

upa (p. 61) . A Sanscrit prefix implying that which is secondary, auxiliary, near by, over, together with, less &c., ஒருபசர்க்கை. Wils. p. 152. UPA. உபகசிதம், s. Laughter, சிரிப்பு. Wils. p. 159. UPAHASITA. உபகதை, s. An ancient anecdote or story told in proof or illustration of a subject, கிளைக்கதை. உபகந்தம், s. Perfume, வாசனை. Wils. p. 153. UPAGANTH'A. உபகரணம், s. A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

UTSAHA. உற்சாகங்கொண்டுமச்சைத்தாவுகிறான். He is transported with joy. உற்சாகங்கொடுக்க, inf. To encourage, to excite, to embolden. உற்சாகசத்தி, s. Energy, application. (p.) உற்சாகஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make great efforts. உற்சாகப்பட, inf. To be energetic, have an impulse of mind for the performance of actions, to resolve, முயற்சிப்பட. உற்சாகப்படுத்த, inf. To excite one to action. உற்சாகப்பலி, s. [in Christ. usage.] Free-will offering. உற்சாகப்பிழை, s. Averseness, unwillingness, backwardness. உற்சாகமாய்க்கொடுக்க, inf. To give freely. உற்சாகமாய்ச்செய்ய, inf. To do willingly, freely. மனோற்சாகமாய், adv. Voluntarily, freely, spontaneously. 26) *

ūṇ (p. 69) s. Food, உண்டி. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. Food of beasts, birds, இரை. 4. Sufferings and enjoyments ordained by God and experienced by the soul, as the fruits of action, நன்மைதீமையினால்விளையும் புசிப்பு. (தீ. 297.) ஊணற்றபோதேயுடலற்றுப்போம். The body cannot exist without food. ஊணற்றபோதேயுறவற்றது. Without entertainment friendship ceases. ஊணுக்குமுந்தவேண்டும்கோளுக்குப்பிந்தவேண்டும். Be first at a feast and the last at slander. ஊணன், s. (fem. ஊணி.) A glutton, மிகவுண்போன். 2. One who is too fond of eating, whose object is to fill his belly, போசனப்பிரியன். 3. A barbarian, மிலேச்சன். ஊணன்கருமமிழந்தான். The glutton failed in his object; i.e. the gluttonous will fail in their pursuits. ஊணுறக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who neither eats nor sleeps. எனக்குஊணுமில்லையுறக்கமுமில்லை. I have neither food nor sleep. ஊண்பாக்கு, s. Betel-nut taken after eating, உண்டபின்றின்பாக்கு. ஊண்பாக்கொழியவீண்பாக்காகாது. Betelnut should be taken only after food. 52)

ūtu (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊதினேன், வேன், ஊத, v. a. To blow--as with the mouth, to blow the fire, to puff and blow--as with hard labor, வாயாலூத. 2. To blow a musical instrument--as a trumpet, துளைக்கருவியி சைக்க. 3. To blow with a bellows, a blowpipe, &c., துருத்திமுதலியவற்றாலூத. 4. To gnaw or bore holes--as a beetle, to injure--as a moth, வண்டுமுதலியவூத. 5. v. n. To be puffed up with wind, to be inflated, வீங்க. 6. To be bloated, swollen--as the belly after eating, to swell or puff up--as a corpse, or carcass in water, &c., சரீரம்வீங்க. 7. To blow softly--as wind, காற்றுநொய்தாய்வீச. 8. To blow--as bees, beetles, &c., in getting out honey from flowers, வண்டிரைய. அவன்முகம்ஊதிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. His face is swollen. உடலூதியிருக்கின்றது. The stomach is puffed up with wind. ஊதிடுகொம்பு--ஊதுகொம்பு, s. A horn used as a trumpet. ஊதிப்பார்க்க, inf. To try a windinstrument. 2. To attempt a cure by enchantment consisting in part of blowing into the patient's body. ஊதிப்போக, inf. To be puffed up. ஊதிப்போட--ஊதிவிட, inf. To blow away, blow out, extinguish. ஊதினபொன், s. Refined gold, gold refined in the fire. வண்டூதினபுடைவை, s. A garment injured by insects, moths. வண்டூதினமரம், s. A timber or beam gnawed or pierced by beetles. வண்டூதினவோலை, s. An ola book, &c., eaten by insects. அந்தூதினநெல், s. Insect-eaten rice. ஊதுகட்டி, s. [vul.] Silver of the purest kind, சொக்கவெள்ளி. ஊதுகரப்பன், s. A kind of disease resulting from bad humors in the system and attended with eruptions. ஊதுகாமாலை, s. A kind of jaundice in which the body swells. ஊதுகுழல், s. A pipe, a gold smith's blow-pipe. ஊதுமா, s. A kind of hastypudding. ஊதுமாந்தம், s. A disease of children, ஓர்நோய். ஊதுமுகம், s. A bloated face. ஊதுவழலை, s. A kind of snake. ஊதுவிரியன்--ஊதுபாம்பு, s. A kind of viper, ஓர்பாம்பு. எக்காளமூத, inf. To sound a trumpet. 58)

ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To lean or depend upon, சார்ந்திருக்க. ஊன்றிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak, or pronounce with distinct articulation, உறுதியாய்ச்சொல்ல. ஊன்றித்தாங்க, inf. To press on a pole in stopping, or poling a boat, ஊன்றித்தள்ள. ஊன்றிநடக்க, inf. To walk cautiously, firmly, &c.--as on slippery ground. 2. To walk firmly as one regaining the use of his limbs. 3. To walk with a firm foot so as to secure a quick pace. கோலையூன்றிக்கொண்டுநடக்கிறான். He walks with the assistance of a staff. ஊன்றிப்படிக்க, inf. To read poetry with proper pauses. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. Urge this argument, insist upon it. ஊன்றிப்போட, inf. To confirm an opinion, accusation, evidence, &c., ஸ்திரப்படுத்திவிட. ஊன்றிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread cautiously--as one on a well-beam, step firmly, steadily, &c. ஊன்றியெழுத, inf. To press or indent well in writing. ஊன்றிவைக்க, inf. To establish a family. 2. To settle one in life, business, &c. 3. to confirm, settle one in an opinion in a slight degree. ஊன்றுகால், s. A stay, a prop, உதைகால். ஊன்றுகோல், s. A staff, a walking stick, a support, பற்றுக்கோடு. எழுத்தையூன்ற, inf. To put a point over a letter which makes it mute. நாற்றையூன்ற, inf. To set plants.
