(p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . A brahman who attends on an idol, அர்ச்சகப்பிராமணன். W. p. 423. DEVALAKA. தேவலோகம், s. World of the gods, Swerga, the third of the secven upper worlds, of which Indra is king, the lowest heaven of mortals, who assume the form of gods for a residence in it. The enjoyments are all sensual, and the period of their continuance depends on the merit of the persons while on earth. When this is exhausted, they return for another period of probation; or go to a place of suffering for the expiration of previous demerit. This is the only heaven presented to the hope of the multitude, and generally the highest bliss they anticipate, சுவர் க்கம். தேவவசனம்--தேவவாக்கு, s. They were made by the three celebrated servants of Siva, அப்பர், சம்பந்தர் and சுந்தரர், and are called the Tamil Vedas, being considered divine. தேவாலயம், s. nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Beauty, அழகு.--There are different kinds of torches, as இரும்புப்பந் தம், எரிபந்தம், ஏணிப்பந்தம், காடபந்தம், which See in their places; also துணிப்பந்தம், or வண் ணார்பந்தம், a torch made of rags obtained from washermen. பந்தக்காட்சி--பந்தம்பறி, s. A ceremony observed at the close of some Saiva festivals, when the torches are snatched away by the people to represent what the wife of Siva did to him when angry. பந்தங்கட்ட, inf. To make flambeaus. முகத்திலேபந்தங்கட்டிக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறான்..... His face flames with anger. பந்தஞ்செய்ய, inf. To tie, to bind. 2. To bind the soul in bodies, to connect it with matter or births. பந்ததயிலம், s. A kind of medicinal oil, சுடர்த்தயிலம். பந்தமுட்டி, s. Torches arranged so as to represent an elephant. (Beschi.) பந்தமும்வீடும். Bondage and liberation of souls; all creatures being affected by these. (p.) பந்தம்பிடிக்க, inf. To carry torches. பந்தம்போட, inf. To make and light a torch. பந்தவரிசை, s. A course or order of lights in a procession, தீவர்்த்தியின்வரிசை. 2. A play with flambeaus lighted at each end, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. பந்தவிளக்கு, s. A flambeau. பந்தர், s. [also பத்தர்.] Persons in bondage; those under the influence of moral evil on account of the sins of former births, and not yet eligible for divine illumination, பாசத்துக்குள்ளானவர்கள். 85) *

(p.) பாசக்கட்டு--பாசபந்தம்--பாசப்பிணி, s. Entanglements of the soul, as connected with births. பாசசம்பந்தம், s. Bondage of the soul, union with matter. பாசசாலம், s. The vast illusions by பாசம். See சாலம். பாசஞானம், s. Knowledge of the entanglements of matter. Compare பதிஞா னம் and பசுஞானம். பாசதரன், s. Yama as holding the cord of death, சமன். பாசதரிசனம், s. As பாசஞானம். See தரிசனம். பாசநாசம், s. Annihilation of the three evil principles in the soul, by the தீட்சை, of the guru, or of the deity in the form of a guru. பாசபந்தம்--பாசக்கயிறு, s. A rope with a noose. [usage.] பாசபந்தர்--பாசபந்திகள்--பாசபெத் தர்--பாசபெந்தர், s. [pl.] Those engrossed, or bound by the entanglements of matter, the senses, &c. பாசபாணி, s. Varuna, வருணன். 2. Messenger of Yama, இயமதூதன்; (lit.) the rope-armed. 2. Yama, the god of death, நமன்; [ex பரணி, hand.] பாசமோசனம்--பாசவிமோசனம், s. Release of the soul from earthly entanglements. பாசம்வீச, inf. To cast the noose, as Yama, to capture the soul at death; to cast a noose, on the foe in battle. பாசவிருள், s. The darkness of illusion from மும்மலம், or the threefold defilements, ஆணவம், மாயை, and காமியம். பாசவைராக்கியம், s. Settled hatred of the principle of evil in the senses, leading to self-denial and rigid austerities, பாசத்தைவெறுக்கை. பாசன், s. The soul as subject to births and mundane attachments, சீவன். (சது.) 2. To tincture or impregnate with smoke. புகைகுடித்தல்--புகையிலைகுடித்தல், v. noun. Smoking tobacco. புகைக்கப்பல், s. A steam vessel. புகைக்காடு, s. A great smoke, a thick mist, a fog. புகைக்கூடு, s. A chimney. 2. A balloon. புகைக்கூண்டு, s. An explosive shell thrown from a mortar, or the hand; a rocket. புகைசுற்றுதல்--புகைசூழுதல், v. noun. Being smoked, as food. புகைச்சுருட்டு, s. A cigar. புகைநாற்றம்--புகைமணம், s. Smell of smoke. புகைபடுதல்--புகைபிடித்தல்--புகையுண் ணல், v. noun. Being smoked, having a smoky taste or smell. 2. Being discolored, blackened, &c., with smoke. புகைப்படலம், s. An expanse or volume of smoke, vapor, tog, cloud. புகைப்பரண், s. A loft over a fireplace for placing things on, that are to be smoked. புகையிலை, s. [vul. பொயிலை.] A leaf of tobacco; (lit.) the smoke-leaf.--The different sorts of tobacco are, வேதாரணி யத்துப்புகையிலை, a superior kind of tobacco cultivated at Vedaranyam; பந்தர்புகையிலை, Bunder tobacco, or that of Masulipatam; காம்புப்புகையிலை, tobacco strung on a line; மேலைமங்கலத்துப்புகையிலை, the best kind from Melaimangalam. புகையிலைகட்டுதல், v. noun. Making up packs of tobacco. 2. Laying up tobacco. புகையிலைகுடித்தல்--புகையுண்ணல், v. noun. Smoking tobacco. புகையிலைக்கறள், s. The soot of the tobacco, &c. See கறள். புகையிலைச்சிப்பம், s. A pack of tobacco. புகையிலைச்சுருட்டு--புகையிலைச்சுற்று, s. Tobacco-roll, cigar. புகையிலைபோடுதல். Chewing tobacco. புகையிலைப்பொடி, s. Snuff. புகையூட்டுதல், v. noun. Smoking, fumigating the hair with odors, perfuming. 2. Tincturing, impregnating or medicating with smoke. புகையூதுதல். Forcing the ripening of fruit by fumigation, பழுக்கச்செய்தல். 2. Gilding. புகையூரல்--புகையூறல்--புகையுறை, s. Condensed smoke, as ஒட்டடை. (c.) புகைவிடுதல், v. noun. Whiffing, emitting smoke from the mouth, &c. நறும்புகை--பூம்புகை, s. Perfumed incense, smoke.
