To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. Two-fold, twice as much, a double quantity. 2. v. noun. Doubling, making two-fold. இரட்டு, s. Two-fold, இருமடங் கு. (p.) 2. (c.) Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. (The clouds) poured a shower of rain, with a murmuring sound. (இராமா.) (p.) இரட்டைச்சுழி, s. The symbol ை of the vowel ஐ. 2. Two curls in horses, cattle, &c.--as இருசுழி. இரட்டைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. A poetic foot of two அசை, ஆசிரியச்சீர். (p.) ஈரடி, s. Two lines, இணையடி. (p.) 2. That which is bifurcate or two forked, கவர். 3. Doubtfulness, fluctuation, சந்தேகம். ஈரடிப்பயன், s. Ambiguity in conversation, equivocation, double-mindedness, உபயார்த்தம். 2. Double-dealing, acting under-handedly so as to suit both parties, கபடம். 3. Uncertainty, doubtfulness, சந்தேகம். 4. [prov.] Diverseness, disagreement--as of a report or account differently related, விகற்பம்; [ex அடி, step, course, et பயன், meaning.] ஈரடிப்பா, s. A stanza of two lines. (p.) ஈரடிமடக்கு, s. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. The two-lived --used of a pregnant female. (c.) ஈரெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். ஈரொட்டு, s. Uncertainty, doubt, crisis, criticalness, state of suspense, conditional bargain. (c.) நோயாளியின்காரியமீரொட்டாயிருக்கின்றது. The case of the patient is doubtful. ஈரொட்டாகச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak doubtfully, uncertainly, ambiguously. ஈரொட்டாகவாங்க, inf. To take things conditionally, that is, if approved; or, as a merchant, to pay for them if sold. 6)

iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. The betel creeper recently planted, வெற்றிலையிளங்கொடி. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. இளங்குரல், s. A low, suppressed cry--as at the commencement of a funeral wail, அமர்ந்தகுரல். 2. A shrill, fine voice, சிறுகுரல். (c.) 3. (p.) A young ear of corn, பயிரிளங்கதிர். இளங்கொடி, s. A young creeper, சிறுகொடி. 2. The secundine or afterbirth of a beast, பசுவினஞ்சுக்கொடி. 3. (fig.) [in poetry.] A female, பெண். இளங்கொற்றி, s. A cow that has recently calved, இளங்கன்றுடைப்பசு. இளசு, appel. noun. [prop. இளைசு.] That which is young, tender. இளஞ்சந்திரன்--இளம்பிறை, s. The horned moon, the crescent. இளஞ்சாயம்--இளநிறம், s. A slight tinge in dyeing, நன்றாய்ப்பற்றாதசாயம். இளஞ்சார்வு, s. [prov.] Palmyra or talipot leaves next to the tender shoot, or heart of the tree, குருத்தோலை. இளஞ்சிவப்பு, s. Light red. இளஞ்சூடு, s. Gentle heat, warmness. இளஞ்சூல், s. Young ears of corn not yet shot forth, பயிரினிளங்கரு. 2. An embryo, முதிராப்பிண்டம். இளநாக்கடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To affect reluctance. இளநீர், s. The water of a young cocoanut, இளந்தேங்காய்குள்நீர். 2. A tender or unripe cocoanut, இளந்தேங்காய், Cocos nucifer&ae;. 3. A faint color in a gem, மணியினிளநிறம். இளநீர்க்குழம்பு, s. A medicinal preparation for diseases of the eye, கண் மருந்திலொன்று. இளநீலம், s. Light blue, வெளிறி யநீலம். இளநீலநூல், s. Light blue thread. இளநெஞ்சன், s. A coward, dastard, a poltroon, கோழைமனதுடையோன். 2. A kind, tender-hearted man, இளகின மனதுடையவன். இளநெஞ்சு, s. Timidity, cowardice, pusillanimity, கோழைமனது. 2. A tender mind, இளகியமனது. இளந்தலை, s. Youth, juvenility, இளமைப்பருவம். 2. Being reduced in rank, lowness of circumstances, want of respectability, lightness, எளிமை. ஆளிளந்தலைகண்டுதோணிமிதக்கும். [vul. prop. இளைப்பம்.] Inferiority, baseness, meanness, disgracefulness, flimsiness, திடமின்மை. சாதியிளப்பம், s. Inferiority, lowness of caste. இளமட்டம், s. A small pony, குறுங்குதிரை. 2. A little boy or girl, a stripling, youth, a young lady, சிறுவன் --சிறுவி. இளமண், s. A sandy soil. இளமண்டை, s. A tender skull, a thin skull, the hair of which early turns grey, the teeth of the person falling out prematurely. இளமத்தியானம், s. Towards mid-day. இளமலர், s. A bud about to burst. இளமழை, s. A light shower of rain, drizzling rain. இளமையோன், s. A youth, a young man. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A very young man--as மழவன். இளமைவழிபாடு--இளவழிபாடு, s. Fickleness, unsteadiness. 2. Elements, rudiments. இளம்பசி, s. Slight hunger--as between meals, easily relieved by light food, or fruit. இளம்பச்சை, s. Light green. இளம்பதம், s. Imperfectness, immaturity, moderateness in state or quality, இளமை. 2. A peculiar quality in medicinal oils derived from immature heat in some cases a defect, in others an excellence, இளம்பாகம். 3. A thin consistency obtained by melting, the first stage of melting, உருகுபதம். 4. The state of sweetmeats, pastries, or other kinds of food imperfectly cooked, வேகாப்பதம். 5. The state of oils or electuaries insufficiently prepared, இலேகியமுதலியவற்றின் பதக்குறைவு. 6. The quality of paddy, &c., imperfectly or moderately dried after boiling, நெல்முதலியவற்றின்காய்ச்சற்கு றைவு. 7. The state of being slightly parched, toasted, &c., வறுபடாப்பொரி. இளம்பயிர், s. Young shoots of corn, corn in a fit state to be transplanted. இளம்பருவம்--இளம்பிராயம், s. Juvenility, youth, early stage of existence. இளம்பறியல், s. That which is plucked when immature--said of cocoanuts. இளம்பாடு, s. Sufferings of nonage, இளமையிற்படும்பாடு. 2. Immaturity, unripeness, imperfection, இளம்பதம். இளம்பிடி, s. A young female elephant, சிறியபெண்யானை. 2. A woman, a lady, பெண்; [ex பிடி, a female elephant whose stately movements a lady is poetically described to resemble in her gait.] இளம்பிள்ளை, s. A young child. இளம்பிள்ளைவாதம், s. A kind of rheumatism to which young persons are subject, a kind of pleurisy. இளம்புல், s. Tender grass newly shot forth, முதிராப்புல். 2. The அறுகு grass. இளவடி, s. Imperfect distillation, இளம்பதத்தில்வடிக்கை. இளவரசு, s. The prince regent who performs the functions of government when the king becomes disabled by age or otherwise, இராசகுமாரன். 2. The heir apparent, பட்டத்துக்குரியபிள்ளை. 3. A king in his minority, குழந்தைப்பருவமுடைய வரசு. (பாரதம்.) இளவல், s. A younger brother, தம் பி. 2. A lad, a youth, இளைஞன். இளவாடை, s. Gentle north wind. இளவாளிப்பு, v. noun. [prov.] Dampness, moisture. இளவுச்சம், s. [in astrology.] The situation of a planet a little before it reaches the meridian, உச்சத்திற்கணிமையா குகை. இளவுறை, s. Incipient or immature curds. இளவெந்நீர், s. Lukewarm water. இளவெயில், s. The early sunshine of the morning; also applied sometimes to the moderated rays of the evening, காலைவெயில். இளவெலும்பு, s. A tender, unhardened bone--as in children, முதிராவெலு ம்பு. இளவெழுத்து, s. An unformed hand-writing, the first writing of a child, படியாவெழுத்து. இளவேனில், s. The milder period of the hot season, including the months of April and May. See பருவகாலம். 6)

uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. uẕu (p. 67) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், உழ, v. a. To plough, ஏருழ. 2. [with the impersonal terminations.] To root up--as pigs, நிலத்தைக்கிளைக்க. பன்றிநிலத்தையெல்லாமுழுதுபோட்டது. The hogs have ploughed up all the field. உழக்கோல், s. A goad used to drive oxen when ploughing. உழத்தி, s. (plu. உழத்தியர்.) A female of the ploughman caste. See உழவர். உழத்திப்பாட்டு, s. A kind of poem. See பள்ளு. உழுதகாடு, s. A ploughed highland. உழுதநிலம், s. Ploughed land. உழுதுண்போர், s. Those who cultivate fields belonging to others and subsist upon a share of the produce. 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். உழுதுண்டுவாழ்வாரேவாழ்வார்மற்றெல்லாந்தொ ழுதுண்டுபின்செல்பவர். Those who till the ground enjoy plenty and happiness, the rest being followers and servants of the great depend on their assistance. (குறள்.) தொழுதூண்சுவையிலுழுதூணினிது. To cultivate ground and live by it is more satisfactory than to procure maintenance from others by serving them. உழுதுபுழுதியாக்க, inf. To plough and harrow, to waste. உழுபடை, s. A plough, கலப்பை; [ex படை, implements.] உழுவளைப்பு, s. The turnings in ploughing, தொழுப்பு. உழவு, v. noun. Ploughing, உழு கை. 2. (fig.) (p.) Agriculture, husbandry, tillage, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவின்மிகுத்தஊதியமில்லை. There is no occupation which yields greater profit than agriculture. உழவடைக்க, inf. To make over to another a piece of land for purposes of cultivation. உழவர்--உழவோர், s. Ploughmen, cultivators, agriculturists, husbandmen, inhabitants of agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். 3. (p.) [ex உழப்பு.] Warriors, heroes, படைவீரர். உழவிடை, s. Cessation from ploughing. உழவீரம், s. Condition of the ground when it is sufficiently moist to be ploughed. உழவுகட்ட, inf. [prov.] To take the lead--as the first of several teams in ploughing, to mark the course, &c., முதற்சால்போக. உழவுகட்டி, s. Clods in a ploughed field, உழும்பொழுதுபெயருமண்கட்டி. உழவுகாலம், s. Ploughing season. உழவுகுண்டை--உழவுமாடு--உழ வெருது. Oxen trained to the plough. உழவுகோல், s. A ploughman's rod or staff, an ox goad, தாற்றுக்கோல். 2. A horse whip, குதிரைச்சம்மட்டி. உழவுகோல்கொண்டூர்ந்தனன். He drove (the horse) with a whip. உழவுசால், s. A furrow, படைச் சால். உழவுசெய்ய, inf. To plough, practise agriculture, உழ. உழவுத்தொழில், s. Ploughing, tillage, husbandry, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவுபொறுத்தமாடு, s. A powerful, well trained ox that works easily. உழவுமழை, s. Rain that falls in the ploughing and sowing season. உழுகை, v. noun. Ploughing, tillage, agriculture, உழவு. ஏராளர், s. Husbandmen, agriculturists, உழவர். ஏரின்வாழ்நர்--ஏருழவர்--ஏருழுநர் --ஏர்த்தொழிலர், s. Ploughmen, those who live by the plough, உழவர். ஏருழக்க, inf. To practise husbandry, பயிர்செய்ய. ஏரெழுபது, s. A poem of seventy stanzas in praise of the plopugh by கம்பர், ஓர்நூல். See Ellis. p. 44. (குறள்). ஏரோட்ட, inf. To plough, உழ. ஏர்க்கால், s. The shaft of a plough, கலப்பையின்கால். 2. Shaft of a carriage, வண்டியேர்க்கால். ஏர்ச்சீர், s. Implements of husbandry. 2. The wealth procurable by husbandry. ஏர்ச்சீரில்லாதவன். One who has neither oxen, implements of husbandry, nor seed, corn, &c. ஏர்த்தாயம், s. Ploughing in season. ஏர்த்தொழில், s. Agriculture, husbandry, உழவுத்தொழில். ஏர்நாழி, s. A small circular piece of wood with a hole in the centre to receive the cord வடக்கயிறு by which the ploughman can regulate the depth of the furrows, கலப்பையினோருறுப்பு. ஏர்ப்பண், s. [prov.] The rope for attaching the oxen to the plough, or the plough-beam to the yoke, பூட்டாங்க யிறு. ஏர்ப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Ploughing for the first time in the season, on an auspicious day begun with appropriate ceremonies, ஏர்கட்டுகை. ஏர்ப்பூட்ட, inf. To yoke the oxen to the plough. ஏர்வாரம், s. A share of the produce allowed for the team and agricultural implements used in cultivating the land, ஏர்க்காகக்கொடுக்கும்வாரம். முன்னேர்க்குண்டை, s. The first or best yoke of oxen. பின்னேர், s. The second or hindermost yoke of oxen. பொன்னேர்கட்ட, inf. To plough for the first time in the season on an auspicious day begun with the appropriate ceremonies--as ஏர்ப்பூட்ட. 52)

ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. kṭukkeṉl (p. 87) v. noun. [prov.] Being grown up, increased in stature, வள ருதல். 2. Being tall, உயருதல். 3. Being increased in wealth or learning (sarcastically), மிகுதல். அவன்கடுக்கென்னநாட்செல்லும். It will be sometime before he is grown up. அதற்குள்அவன்கடுக்கென்றுவிடுவான். By that time he will be grown up. கடுக்கென்றபயிர், s. Corn grown up. கடுக்கென்றவன், s. A grown person, a young fellow. 2. A tall man. 81)
