Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. eñcu (p. 73) கிறது, எஞ்சினது, ம், -எஞ்ச, v. n. To diminish, decrease, shorten, lessen, grow small, few, &c., சுருங்க. 2. To be deficient, be defective, to lack, want, குறைய. 3. To remain, be left as a surplus, சேஷமா யிருக்க. 4. To be elliptical--as words, or clauses, சொல்லெஞ்சிநிற்க. (p.) பின்பவ்வெஞ்சியவிருவரும். Afterwards the remaining two persons-எஞ்சணி, s. emaṉ (p. 73) s. The deity of Naraca or hell, where his capital is placed, in which he sits in judgment on the dead, and distributes rewards and punishments, sending the good to Swerga, and the wicked to the division of Naraca or Tartarus appropriated to their crimes: he corresponds with the Grecian god Pluto, and the judge of hell Minos. and in Hindu mythology is often identified with death and time; he is the son of Surya, or the sun, and brother of the personified Yamuna or Jumna river, நமன். Wils. p. 681. YAMA. (இயமன் and யமன்.) 2. The third fang of the cobra, நரகபாம்பின்பற்களிலொன்று. (p.) எமகணம்--எமகிங்கிரர்--எமதூதர், s. ēẕu (p. 79) . Seven, septuple, seven fold, ஓரெண்.--Note. Seven is considered a special or sacred number. As a prefix it is often எழு or ஏழ். எழுகடல்--ஏழ்கடல், s. The seven oceans. எழுநிலைக்கோபுரம், s. A tower seven stories high. எழுநிலைமாடம், s. A palace seven stories high, lit. with seven door frames one above another. எழுபிறப்பு--ஏழ்பவம்--ஏழ்பிறப் பு, s. The seven different living beings, viz.: 1. தேவர், supernals. 2. மக்கள், men. 3. விலங்கு, beasts. 4. பறவை, birds. 5. ஊர்வன, reptiles. 6. நீர்வாழ்வன, aquatic creatures. 7. தாவரம், immovable things --as trees, plants. ஏழடிபின்போக, inf. To accompany a poet or learned person seven steps on his departure. ஏழத்தனை. Seven-fold. ஏழரை--எழரையாண்டுச்சனி, s. The period of saturn's evil influence being seven-and-half years. See மங்கு சனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணசனி. ஏழனுருபு, s. The seventh case or local ablative, ஏழாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. ஏழாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage-shed when planted on the seventh day before the wedding, a lucky day being chosen. ஏழுகோணம், s. A heptagon, septangular figure. ஏழுதீவு, s. The seven continents. ஏழுபருவம், s. The seven stages of life. See பருவம். ஏழுலகம், s. The seven worlds, including the earth and six supernal worlds. ஏழேழு, s. Seven times seven. 2. aiyṉ (p. 80) s. [voc. ஐயா, ஐய, ஐயனே, &c., pl. ஐயன்மார், ஐயமார்.] Father, பிதா. 2. Elder brother, மூத்தோன். 3. Guru, குரு. 4. An elder, a superior, a person of dignity, respectability, master, &c., உயர்ந்தோன். 5. A king, அரசன். 6. A teacher, preceptor, உபாத்தியாயன். 7. The god Eyanar, ஐயனார். 8. Argha, அருகன். (p.) ஐயர் is sometimes used in the nominative case for ஐயன்--as ஐயர்வந்தபின்புனக்குத்தருவேன். I will give it to you after my father, master, &c., is come. ஐயா. The vocative of ஐயன் is often used as an interjection. ஐயாபணமிரந்தாலுங்கொள்ளக்கிடையாதே... Strange indeed, though one has money, the thing is not to be bought. வாருமையா. Come, sir--a common term of salutation among persons of respectability. அரிவையைக்கோடியையா. Take a wife, sir, I beseech you--addressed by a father to his son. (ஸ்காந்.) அறைந்தாயைய. You say, sir. (பாரத.) ஐயகோ. Poetic interjection expressive of grief, alas, alas, O lord, இரக்கச் சொல். 26)

oṭu (p. 81) s. The name of a tree, ஓர் மரம். 2. [as ஒடக்கட்டி.] concealed matter in a boil or imposthume after the surface is healed, an abscess imperfectly healed, the core, புடைகொண்டபுண். ஒடுக்கட்டி, s. A boil under the armpit, ஓர்பரு. ஒடுத்தங்க--ஒடுநிற்க, inf. To remain as concealed, unremoved, insidious matter in a boil, causing a new eruption, பருவிற்சீத்தங்க. ஓடுநின்றாற்பின்புங்கட்டும். If matter remain, new eruptions will form. ஒடுவடக்கி, s. A plant used for curing new ulcerations, caused by matter remaining in a boil-commonly called குப்பைமேனி. 2. A tree, திராய்மரம். ஒடுவெண்ணெய், s. Oil applied to cause absorption of matter in a boil, or to cure new eruptions, ஓர்தைலம். 46)

kngku (p. 85) s. A ridge or bank to retain water in rice-lands, வயலின்வரம்பு. 2. The side of a bank or ridge, வரம்பின்பக்கம். 3. A limit or border, எல்லை. 4. An eagle, கழுகு. 5. A kite, பருந்து. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' (fem. குள்ளி.) A short man, குறளன். 2. An artful, cunning fellow, தந்திரக்காரன். 3. A cruel, mischievous person, கொடியன். குள்ளனைக்கொண்டாழம்பார்க்கிறான். He at-He attempts to find out the depth (of water) by sending (into it) a dwarf--said of one who employs a person unfit for his business. கள்ளன்பின்போனாலுங் குள்ளன்பின்போகப்படா து. Better is it to follow a thief than a dwarf--meaning it is a bad omen. குள்ளக்கெண்டை, s. A kind of fish. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A dwarf. 2. A cunning fellow, தந்திரி.
