One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. To neigh as a horse, குதிரைகனைக்க. 2. To doubt, hesitate, சந்தேகிக்க. 3. v. a. To imagine, infer, understand or determine by inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிய. அனுமானிதம், v. noun. To prove or show to be true, மெய்ப்பிக்க. உண்மைப்பிடி, s. Tenacious adherence to a religion from a discovery of its truth. 2. Consistent and steady perseverance in religion. உண்மைப்பேதகம், s. Prevarication. 2. Breach of trust, unfaithfulness. உண்மைப்பொருள், s. The Deity, the real Being, as eternal, immutable, &c., மெய்ப்பொருள். 2. The meaning of the Vedas, or of a system of religion, உள்ளபொருள். உண்மையளவை, s. [in logic.] Ascertainment of a thing from the attributes or qualities affirmed of it--as when we hear that a stone attracts iron, we know that it is a magnet, பிரத்தியட்சப் பிரமாணம். உண்மையறிந்தவன், s. One who has discovered the reality, authenticity, mysteries, &c. of religion. 2. One who has experienced the truth, &c. of religion. உண்மையானதெய்வம், s. The true deity. உண்மையானவன், s. A man sincere in religion. 2. A man of probity. உண்மையுவமை, [in rhetoric.] A figure in which the simile is rejected, the reality being ascertained, மெய்யுவமை. 130) *

upaniṭatam (p. 62) --உபநிஷதம், s. [pref. உப.] The substance or essential parts of the Vedas, the most recondite and mysterious parts, வேதநுட்பம். 2. kāṭci (p. 103) s. Sight, view, பார்்வை. 2. An object of sight, visible appearance, தோற் றம். 3. The manifestation of a deity or the sight of a great personage, தரிசனம். 4. (p.) [in logic.] Perception, evidence of the senses, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். 5. Knowledge, intelligence, ascertainment, அறிவு. 6. [in erotics.] One of the ten அவத்்தை, the first view which a bridegroom has of his bride, விரகாவஸ்தைக்காட்சி. 7. (c.) Anomaly, a strange event, நூதனக்காட்சி.--Note. In the agama logic, seven species of perception are given, viz.: 1. ஐயக்காட்சி, Indistinct apprehension, doubt, uncertainty, hesitation. 2. திரிபுக்காட்சி, misapprehension, misconception, optical or mental illusion. 3. விகற் பக்காட்சி, discrimination or knowledge to distinguish things one from another in five particulars, viz.: in name, kind, quality, action, and substance. or matter. 4. பொ றிவாயிற்காட்சி, perception of the sences, with the aid of the mental faculties. 5. மனக் காட்சி, or மானதக்காட்சி, ideas formed in the mind of things perceived by the senses. 6. அனுபவக்காட்சி, perception by actual experience of the exercise of the affecions towards objects perceived. 7. யோகக்காட்சி, the spiritual perception of the Yoga, or knowledge of events past, present or future, by abstract devotion--Note. 2d. Each of the above has two divisions, one, புறம்-abroad, relating to external or secular affairs; the other, அகம்-- at home, to religious affairs. கண்ணுக்குக்காட்சிகடவுளுக்குங்காட்சி. What is pleasing to the sight is pleasing to the deity--referring to the ornaments of the temple, rich offerings, &c. கண்ணுள்ளபோதே காட்சி. Gratify your sight while you can. காட்சிகொடுக்க, inf. To manifest himself--as a deity. காட்சிப்பிரமாணம், s. [in logic.] One of the eight modes of ascertaining truth. See பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். காட்சிப்பொருள், s. Things seen, objects of sight or sense--as distinguished from கருத்துப்பொருள். or mental objects. காட்சிமறைத்தல், v. noun. Hinderance in seeing or observing any thing. See அஷ்டகுற்றம். காட்சியர்-காட்சியவர்--காட்சியார், s. The wise, அறிஞர். காட்சியாக, inf. To appear in a vision. காட்சியுணர்வு, s. The sense of sight, காட்சியறிவு. காணாக்காட்சி, s. An extraordinary sight, a wonderful occurrence. 2. An ill omen. திருக்காட்சி, s. A divine meditation. காரணக்காட்சி, s. A great sight or event which may be the cause of future effects. 81) *

kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. The last two are considered visible in eclipses of the sun and moon, இராகு being, black, and கேது red. (See under கோள்.) 3. Relation in the order of time between a vocal and an instrumental sound -- the one immediately preceding or immediately following the other; one of the ten தாளப்பிரமாணம். அவனைக்கிரகம்பிடித்தாட்டுகிறது. An evil planet is exerting its influence on him. கிரகக்கழிப்பு, v. noun. Dispelling the evil influences of planets by appropriate ceremonies, கிரகசாந்தி. கிரகங்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony to dispel disease, &c., supposed to be induced by a malignant planet, in which clay images, made for the occasion representing the planets to be appeased, are worshipped, offerings of fruits, &c., being presented, and then all cast out in a cross road, கிரகசாந்திசெய்ய. கிரகசாத்திரம், s. Science of the planets. கிரகசாந்தி, s. A ceremony to counteract or mitigate the malignant effects of planets on one's person or affairs, கிரகக் கழிப்பு. கிரகசாந்திபண்ண, inf. To perform ceremonies for counteracting the evil effects of planets. கிரகசாரம்--கிரககதி, s. Planetary motion. 2. Planetary ephemeris. 3. The phenomena of the planets in their process. 4. Ill luck (Rott.) அவனைப்பிடித்தகிரகசாரவேளைஅப்படிப்பண்ணிற் று. He acted according to his ill fate. கிரகசெபம், s. Incantations offered to the planets deprecating their bad influences, கிரகத்துக்குச்செய்யுஞ்செபம். கிரகசித்திரம், s. Private family affairs, family troubles, &c., வீட்டுக்காரியம். கிரகச்சுற்று, s. The revolution of the planets, கிரகத்தின்சுற்று. கிரகதானம், s. Gifts presented to Brahmans to avert the malignant influences of inauspicious planets, நவக்கிரகதானம். கிரகதோஷம், s. Malignant effects of planets, கிரகதீங்கு. கிரகத்தன்--கிரகஸ்தன் s. The householder, the second of the four religious orders. (See ஆச்சிரமம், இல்வாழ்வோன்.) 2. The situation of a planet in the heavens. 2. The astrological positions of planets of which there are five, viz.: நட்பு, ஆட்சி, உச்சம், பகை, நீசம். கிரகநிலையின்பலன். The influence of the planets in their respective signs. கிரகநீதி, s. Domestic duties; the rules of hospitality, &c., to be practised by the householder, இல்லொழுக்கம். கிரகநோக்கு--கிரகப்பார்வை, s.
