aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. aẕi (p. 32) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To blight, blast, ruin, கெடுக்க. 2. To waste, injure, damage, பாழாக்க. 3. To abolish, consume, annihilate, destroy. demolish, exterminate, சங்கரிக்க. 4. To efface, obliterate, குலைக்க. 5. To refute an argument. கண்டிக்க. தேடாதழிக்கிற்பாடாய்முடியும். If you spend what you have not earned, you will suffer. (ஔவை.) கருவழித்திடலுநன்றே. It would be better to destroy the foetus, (to cause abortion.) வறிதினழித்திடார். They will waste nothing in vain. (காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

āṇai (p. 38) s. Oath, as in a court of justice, &c., சத்தியம். 2. Oath, as in profane swearing, வீண்சபதம். 3. Truth, மெய். 4. Conjuration, adjuration, obstructing a procedure by oath; checking by oath a beast ready to fall on one, or a law proceeding; an appeal by oath to a superior--as to the deity, the king, &c., obstructing or hindering--as the water from flowing over one's land, &c., கட்டு. 5. [Sans. Akgna.] An exercise of sovereign power and authority, a command, jurisdiction, mandate, order, an injunction, edict, ஆக்கினை. 6. The sign or insignia of authority--as the sceptre, national colors, the seal, the stamp, the badge of office, the impress on the coin, &c., அடையாளம். 7. Conquest, victory, வெற்றி. 8. Rules, injunctions, usages, &c. established by the learned of old, சான்றோர்கட்டளை. கண்ணாணை. By my eyes. அப்பாணை. I swear by my father. உன்தகப்பனாணை. I conjure you by your father. உன்னாணை. By thee. ஆணைசெலுத்த, inf. To sway the sceptre, exercise the functions of government. ஆணைச்சக்கரம், s. Sceptre. 2. (fig.) Royal power. ஆணைமீற, inf. To disregard conjuration or interdiction. ஆணையிட, inf. To take an oath, swear. 2. To adjure one. ஆணைவழிநிற்றல், v. noun. iṉ (p. 57) adj. Sweet, pleasant, agreeable, இனிமையான. இன்சொல், s. See இனியசொல். இன்சொல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison between two things, one of which, though excelling, bears a resemblance to the other, உவமையணியி லொன்று. இன்னலம், s. Delight, merit, virtue, இனியநலம். இன்னிசை, s. Melody, harmony, இன்பமானவோசை. 2. A tune, இராகம். 3. (fig.) A kind of lute with seven strings, ஏழுநரம்புள்ளவீணை. இன்னிசைகாரர், s. Players on the lute, musicians, பாணர். இன்னிசைச்சிந்தியல்வெண்பா, s. The three-lined இன்னிசைவெண்பா, of which the two first have four சீர், the last only three, சிந்தியல்வெண்பாவிரண்டனு ளொன்று. இன்னிசைவெண்பா, s. A species of verse in four lines, of which the first three have each four சீர், and the last line three. இன்னோசை, s. Euphony, இனி யவோசை. 52)

uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. The pencil which has imbibed blue paint. (நன்னூலுரை.) கள்ளுண்ணி, s. A drunkard. தள்ளுண்ண, inf. To be rejected. வீண்சோறுண்ணி, s. A rice consumer, a worthless person. உண்டல். A past verbal form of உண்ணல், eating. 119)

uruttirṉ (p. 65) s. The god Siva who disperses the tears of mortals and demigods, சிவன்; [ex ருத், to weep.] Wils. p. 77. RUDRA. உருத்திரகணிகை, s. A courtezan of Siva, a dancing girl of one of his temples. உருத்திரசடை, s. A plant, சிவது ளசி, Ocimum basilicum. உருத்திரர், s. A class of demigods, inferior manifestations of Siva being eleven in number, viz.: மாதேவன், அரன், உருத்திரன், சங்கரன், நீலலோகிதன், ஈசானன், விசயன், வீமதேவன், பவோற்பவன், கபாலி, சௌ மியன். Wils. p. 77. Sufferings and enjoyments ordained by God and experienced by the soul, as the fruits of action, நன்மைதீமையினால்விளையும் புசிப்பு. (தீ. 297.) ஊணற்றபோதேயுடலற்றுப்போம். The body cannot exist without food. ஊணற்றபோதேயுறவற்றது. Without entertainment friendship ceases. ஊணுக்குமுந்தவேண்டும்கோளுக்குப்பிந்தவேண்டும். Be first at a feast and the last at slander. ஊணன், s. (fem. ஊணி.) A glutton, மிகவுண்போன். 2. One who is too fond of eating, whose object is to fill his belly, போசனப்பிரியன். 3. A barbarian, மிலேச்சன். ஊணன்கருமமிழந்தான். The glutton failed in his object; i.e. the gluttonous will fail in their pursuits. ஊணுறக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who neither eats nor sleeps. எனக்குஊணுமில்லையுறக்கமுமில்லை. I have neither food nor sleep. ஊண்பாக்கு, s. Betel-nut taken after eating, உண்டபின்றின்பாக்கு. ஊண்பாக்கொழியவீண்பாக்காகாது. Betelnut should be taken only after food. 52)

ūtāri (p. 69) s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, a squanderer, வீண்செலவுக்காரன். ஊதாரித்தனம், s. Prodigality, profligacy, வீண்செலவு. ஊதாரியாக, inf. To be extravagant. 55) *

ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. A general insurrection, இராசதுரோகமானகலகம். ஊர்க்காறுபாறு, s. The affairs of a place, public affairs, ஊர்க்காரியம். 2. Management of public affairs, ஊர்விசாரிப்பு. 3. oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. [vul.] An abandoned person, a wretch, முழுதுங்கெட் டவன். கடைக்கண், s. The outside corner of the eye, கட்கடை. 2. A benign look, கடாட்சம். கடைக்கண்கிடைக்கவேண்டும். I am anxious to get a propitious look, glance of your eye. கடைக்கண்ணாற்பார்க்க, inf. To glance, look sidewise. 2. To cast a propitious or benignant look. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, v. noun. A side look, a glance. 2. A propitious or benignant look, approbation, a token of favor. கடைக்கனல்--கடையனல், s. The final deluge-fire, ஊழித்தீ. கடைக்காப்பு, s. The last verse in the poem called பதிகம்--as an invocation, &c. கடைக்காரன், s. A shop-keeper. கடைக்குடல், s. The lower part of the bowels, கீழ்க்குடர். கடைக்குட்டி, s. The youngest child, a term of fondness, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைக்குறை, s. Elision in the termination of a word--as கோல், for கோ லம். கடைக்கூட்ட, inf. To effect, to produce a result--as the actions of a former birth are supposed to do, வினைப் பயனுறுவிக்க. 2. To unite man and wife, or a male and female of the brute creation, as former deeds are imagined to do. கடைக்கூழை, s. A species of rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. 2. The rear division of an army, படைப்பின்னணி. See கூழை. கடைக்கொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand burnt to the end, குறைக்கொள்ளி. கடைக்கோடி, s. [vul.] The very extremity, the utmost limit, ஈறு. கடைசால், s. [prov.] The finishing of a business, முடிவு. 2. Stern of a vessel--also written கடையால். கடைசாலொதுக்க, inf. To finish a business in hand. கடைச்சங்கம், s. The third and last of the ancient Madura colleges consisting of forty-nine literati, இறுதிச்சங் கம். கடைச்சரக்கு, s. Curry stuff, spices, &c., drugs, medicines, &c., sold in the bazaar, கடையில்விற்கப்படுஞ்சரக்கு. கடைச்சன், s. The youngest son, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைஞர், s. The laboring caste in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். கடைதலைப்பூட்டு, s. An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. (p.) கடைத்தடம், s. Gate-way, வாயில். (p.) கடைத்தரம், s. The last class, the lowest or worst kind, கீழ்த்தரம். கடைத்தலை--கடைத்தலைவாயில்-கடைத்தலைவாய்தல், s. The outer gate, the outer court or yard, தலைவாயில். கடைத்தெரு, s. A market-street, a bazaar, கடைவீதி. கடைத்தேற, inf. [prop. கடத்தேற.] To be saved, to escape all afflictions. கடைத்தேற்றம், s. [prop. கடத்தேற் றம்.] Salvation. கடைநாள்--கடைமீன், s. The twenty-seventh lunar asterism, இரேவதி. (p.) கடைநிலை, s. A poem uttered by holy persons coming from a distance to the hero of the poem at the door of whose residence they stand and desire the door-keeper to inform his master of their arrival, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (See பிரபந்தம்.) 2. An outside door, புறவாயில். (நீதிநெறி.) 3. The last letter of a word or verse, ஈற்றெழுத்து. (p.) கடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. A word at the end of a sentence understood in other parts--one of the தீவகம். கடைநிலையளபெடை, s. The rhyme in which the last letter of each verse is lengthened. கடைநிலையெழுத்து, s. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To set up a shop, open a shop. கடைப்பட, inf. To be inferior, below mediocrity, to be last in quality or estimation, degree or order, இழிவாக. 2. To be practicable, capable of completion, நிறைவேற. என்னாலிதுகடைப்படாது. This will not be completed by me. கடைப்பாடு, s. Determination, தீர் மானிப்பு. 2. Inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. கடைப்பந்தி, s. The lower end of a dining table or of a row of guests, கடைசிப்பந்தி. கடைப்பிடி, s. Bearing in mind, remembering, ஞாபகம். 2. Indelible impressions of gratitude for benefits received, of duties to be performed, of the importance of virtue and religion, மறவா மை. 3. Certainty, ascertainment, established truth, தேற்றம். 4. Firm belief in the essentials of religion serving as the hope and support of the mind in reference to a future state, the last grasp of the soul, உறுதி. 5. Firm determination, firm resolve, either for good or evil, கரும முடிக்குந்துணிவு. 6. Doctrines, truth firmly believed as necessary to salvation, உறுதி யானகொள்கை. கடைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். Knowing and duly providing all things necessary for her household-(குறளுரை.) நன்மைகடைப்பிடி. Persevere in good works. (ஔவை). கடைப்பிறப்பு, s. The meanest species of birth in any class of beings, இழிந்தபிறப்பு. கடைப்புணர்முரண்--கடைமுரண், s. A species of rhyme when the last foot of every line is of opposite meaning, ஓர்தொடை. கடைப்புணர்வு--கடைப்பூட்டு, s. [in jewelry.] Clasp, hasp, அணியின்கடைப் புணர்வு. கடைப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Stupidity, இழிந்தபுத்தி. 2. A piece of folly, பின்புத்தி. கடைப்போக்கு, s. The flood-gate of tank. கடைமடக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Continued recurrence of the same words at the end of each line through a stanza, but with different meanings, சொல்லணி யிலொன்று. See மடக்கு. கடைமுறை, s. The last time, eventually, கடைசிமுறை. (நீதிநெறி. 48.) கடைமோனை--கடையாகுமோனை, s. (See மோனை.) A rhyme when the first letter of the last foot of every line is the same, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையயல், s. [in grammar.] The penultimate, ஈற்றயல். (p.) கடையர், s. (fem. கடைசியர்--க டைச்சியர்.) Laboring classes in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். (p.) கடையழிய, inf. To be afflicted with a painful and lingering disease, to suffer extremely, வருந்த. 2. To be distressed with poverty, வறுமையுற. 3. To degenerate, கேடுற. கடையனல், s. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. Certainty, infallibility in statements, &c., உறுதி. 12. A dam, ridge, causeway, வரம்பு. 13. Positive injunctions, established rules, duties, obligations, &c.--as of caste, religion, connexions, &c., கட்டுப்பாடு. 14. (p.) Abundance, plenty, மிகுதி. 15. Fortification, protection, defence, அரண். 16. The side of a mountain, மலைப்பக்கம். எல்லாருமொருகட்டாயிருக்கிறார்கள். They have all plotted together. பெண்சாதிகாற்கட்டுப்பிள்ளைவாய்க்கட்டு. A wife shackles the feet, and a child stops the mouth; i. e. a married man with a family can neither go, nor eat as he pleases. அவன்என்கட்டுக்குள்ளேநிற்கிறஆளல்ல. He is not subject to my influence--he does not listen to my advice, &c. கட்டழகு, s. Great beauty, பேரழ கு. 2. Ornament, அலங்காரம். கட்டழல், s. A vehement fire. கட்டாடி, s. [prov.] A person temporarily possessed for the purpose of uttering oracles or கட்டு, a species of divination inferior to சன்னதம், குறிசொல்வோ ன். 2. A washerman in respect, considered as a diviner; many of this caste having been celebrated in this character, வண்ணான். 3. A chief of the washer tribe, வண்ணார்தலைவன். கட்டாண்மை, s. Bravery, superior heroism, intrepidity, பேராண்மை. கட்டிரதம்--கட்டுத்தேர், s. A car constructed for a particular occasion made anew every year. கட்டிளமை, s. Tender age, being very young. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A young lad. கட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. To exceed the limits, banks, &c.; violate established rules, positive injunctions, &c. கட்டுக்கடங்காதது, appel. n. That which is unrestrainable, unmanageable, ungovernable. கட்டுக்கட்ட, s. To tie up a pack, &c., மூட்டைகட்ட. 2. To fabricate, invent a fiction, a slander, பொய்க்கதைகட்ட. 3. To tie cloths to a boil in applying medicine, பருவுக்குமருந்துகட்ட. கட்டுக்கதை--கட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fable, a fiction, mythological tales. கட்டுக்கரப்பான், s. Eruption on a child. கட்டுக்கலியாணம், s. [prov.] A wedding, marriage ceremony, &c., festival--from the bridegroom's tying the marriage symbol on the bride's neck. கட்டுக்கழுத்தி, s. A married woman, she who wears the தாலி, மங்கலமங் கை. கட்டுக்காரன், s. [prov.] (fem. கட் டுக்காரி.) A diviner, a conjurer, குறிசொல் வோன். கட்டுக்காவல், s. A very strict guard, close custody--applied to the protection of girls arrived at the age of puberty, &c., great care, great strictness, கட்டானகாவல். கட்டுங்காவலுமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in close confinement. கட்டுக்கிடை--கட்டுக்கிடையன், s. Cloth or other goods lying long unsold, நாட்பட்டசரக்கு. கட்டுக்குத்தகை, s. A contract or lease of land for many years together, a contract for a whole dhoney without reference to the number of trips, the weight of the cargo, &c. கட்டுக்கூட்டு, s. [prov.] A fabrication, a forgery, a fiction, a fable, கட் டுக்கதை. 2. An intertexture of letters, a cipher, மாற்றியெழுதப்பட்டது. கட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. To consult a diviner. கட்டுக்கொடி, s. A tether, a rope stretched along the ground to which cattle, goats, &c., are tied by the leg in a row at night, ஆடுமாடுகட்டுங்கயிறு. கட்டுக்கொதித்தல், v. noun. Throbbing, &c.--as a boil. கட்டுக்கோப்பு, s. A building, fabric. 2. An exaggeration. கட்டுச்சூலை, s. A disease, the node, குலைக்கட்டு. கட்டுச்சொல், s. A falsehood, an untruth. கட்டுச்சொல்ல, inf. To divine, conjure. கட்டுச்சோறு--கட்டுசோறு, s. Boiled rice, &c., tied up for a journey, ஆற் றுணா. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. [prov.] To be broken--as a blister, boil, &c. கட்டுடைத்தல்--கட்டுமுறித்தல், v. noun. Making a large breach--as a river in its banks, the sea in the shore --as in the breaking up at the universal deluge. கட்டுண்ணல், v. noun. Being bound, &c., கட்டப்படுதல். கட்டுண்ணி, s. One who has been frequently bound. கட்டுத்தளர, inf. To grow slack --as a tie; to be loose--as a bale, &c. கட்டுத்தறி, s. A post to which an elephant may be tied, யானைமுதலியன கட்டுங்கம்பம். கட்டுத்திரவியம், s. [prov.] Treasure bound up in one's cloth, &c., பொற்கிழி. கட்டுத்திரள, inf. [prop. கட்டிதிர ள.] To form or swell--as a tumor. கட்டுத்தையல், s. A kind of firm sewing. கட்டுத்தோணி--கட்டுப்படகு, s. A dhoney or vessel of which the seams are sewed together. கட்டுப்பட, inf. To yield to, to submit, be influenced by, be brought under the power of, be overcome by, கட் டுக்குள்ளடங்க. 2. To be bound by spells or otherwise restrained, மந்திரமுதலியவற் றாற்கட்டுப்பட. 3. To be constipated--as the system; to be obstructed--as waters, as humors in the system, blood, urine, menstruation, &c., தடைப்பட. ஒருமயிரினாலேகட்டுப்படுவான். He may be bound by a single hair; i. e. he will be easily persuaded or prevailed upon. கட்டுப்படுத்த, inf. To restrain, confine, subdue, subordinate, control, restrict, subject, கட்டுக்குளடக்க. கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To stop, prevent. கட்டுப்பாடு, s. Mutual obedience or harmony--as among relations, பந்துக் கட்டு. 2. Self-restraint, thraldom, கட்டுப் படுகை. 3. League, band, conspiracy, faction, confederacy, கட்சி. 4. Compact, social bond or union, relative, national, religious or other tie, bond, &c., இணக் கம். கட்டுப்பாடுபண்ண, inf. To bring under, or keep in order. கட்டுப்பானை, s. A float or raft constructed by joining a number of earthen pots together. கட்டுப்பிடித்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To ascertain the origin and cure of a disease by a magical exercise--a sort of divination. கட்டுப்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] Ornaments for the body, jewels, ஆபரணம். கட்டுப்பெட்டி, s. [vul.] A stiff basket braided with ratan, olas, &c., fastened by tying, for holding clothes, &c. கட்டுப்பேச்சு--கட்டுவார்த்தை--க ட்டுவிசேஷம், s. A fabricated story, fiction, வீண்கதை. கட்டுமட்டு, s. [prov.] Sparingness, carefulness, providentness, அளவாய்ச்செல விடுகை. 2. Unanimity, oneness of feeling, ஒத்ததன்மை. 3. Taciturnity, அடக்கம். கட்டுமட்டாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak with ability. கட்டுமரம், s. A float or raft, a catamaran, மிதவை. கட்டுமாமரம், s. An engrafted large kind of mango tree, ஓர்வகைமாமரம்--also called ஒட்டுமாமரம். கட்டுமாம்பழம், s. A mango fruit which, when it matures, is protected with a case. எட்டியிலேகட்டுமரம்பழமுண்டாமோ. Will the bitter poisonous எட்டி tree produce mangos? கட்டுமுகனை, s. [prov.] Authority, custody, trust, அதிகாரம். 2. management, direction, administration, supervision, superintendence, மேல்விசாரணை. 3. Economy, frugality, husbandry, சிக்கனம். 4. Strictness, rigor, restraint, precision, limitation, restriction, check, confinement, constraint, கண்டிப்பு. 5. Exclusion, debarring, தடை. கட்டுரை, s. An avowal, a solemn declaration, undoubted truth, infallible expression, உறுதிச்சொல். 2. A pithy or sententious expression, a proverb, பழ மொழி. 3. Metaphorical language, magnifying or depreciating by figure of speech, புனைந்துரை. கட்டுரையன்றுபட்டாங்கே. This is not an exaggeration, but the plain truth. (பிரபுலிங்.) கட்டுவடம், s. kttu (p. 92) கிறேன், கத்தினேன், வேன், கத்த, v. n. To cry with a harsh continued noise, to scream, squall--as an infant, கூவ. 2. The screaching of the squirrels indicates the proximity of a snake. மாரித்தவளைபோலேயேன்கத்துகிறாய். Why do you croak like a frog in the rainy season? --said of one who talks too much, or importunes unceasingly. கத்து, v. noun. Crying, bawling, கூப்பிடுகை. 2. Chattering, unmeaning or idle talk, vain babbling, nonsense, mere declamation, பிதற்றுகை.--Note. Exalted devotees use this term concerning the opinions, &c., of other sects or of those of the same sects, but inferior to themselves. சமயக்கத்து, s. The arguments or wrangling of religious disputants. 2. Religious tenets exclusive of the sublimer or experimental parts. In both meanings the usage is sarcastic, spoken by opponents or by those who have arrived at an exalted degree. பொய்ந்நூலாம்அச்சமயக்கத்தினாராதரிக்கத்தெய்வ ங்கள்வைச்சமயக்கத்தினார்வாழ்வு.
