canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. A period at the expiration of each yuga, connecting it with the following, and occupying 1/12 of each, during which a gradual change takes place in the world, introductory to the peculiarities of the succeeding yuga; also a period of the same length, as the Satya yuga at the end of each Manvantara and of each Kalpa, யுகசந்தி. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. ciṟumai (p. 189) s. Smallness, littleness, diminutiveness, அற்பம். 2. Want, indigence, misery, wretchedness, poverty, adversity, தரித்திரம். 3. Oppression, suffering, துன்பம். 4. Disease, நோய். 5. Inferiority, youth, minority, இளமை. 6. Scantiness, paucity, fewness, scarceness, குறைவு. 7. Failure, swerving from a virtuous, or religious course and consequent disgrace, இழிவு. 8. Insignificance, paltriness, frivolousness, எளிமை. 9. Fineness, minuteness, delicateness, slenderness, நொய்மை. 1. Low parentage, obscurity of birth, இழிபிறப்பு. (c.) சிறுமைபட, inf. To be poor, to be in adversity or in depressed circumstances. 2. To be a mean, degraded, beggarly object--oppo. to பெருமை. 3. To be oppressed. சிறுமைபடுத்த, inf. To impoverish; to debase, degrade. சிறுமையர், s. The low, the base, கீழ் மக்கள். (p.) சிறுமையிற்கல்விசிலையிலெழுத்து. Learning in youth is as durable as engraving in stone. என்சிறுமைசொல்லிமுடியாது. My poverty is inexpressible. சிறுமையிலடிபட்டவன். One tossed about by poverty, &c. சிறுமையும் பெருமையுமவனவன் செய்வினையால் வரும். Moral elevation or degradation is consequent on one's moral or immoral conduct. 57)

cāttu (p. 176) கிறேன், சாத்தினேன், வேன், சாத்த, v. a. To daub, smear, anoint--as sandal, or other unguents, சந்தனமுதலியஅப்ப. 2. To put a cloth, an ornament, or flowers on an idol, a holy personage, &c., ஆடைமுதலிய அ ணிய. 3. To slap, strike, tap, beat, அடிக்க. 4. To shut, put to, to close--as a door, &c., கதவுமுதலியமூட. 5. (impr. for சார்த்து.) To place against, ஒன்றின்மேற்சார்த்த. (c.) சாத்தாதவர், s. (pl.) Those who do not wear the sacred thread, or the tuft of hair. A mixed class of Vaishnuvas--opposed, to சாத்தினவர். They have their principal occupation, as flower-gatherers, minstrels or mendicants. (R.) Compare சாத்தானியன். சாத்திக்கழிக்க, inf. To adorn the idol with flower or garlands, and afterwards remove them. சாத்திக்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To dress one's self with garlands, costly attire, &c., in contempt. சாத்துப்படி--சாத்துகாப்பு, s. Flowers, jewels and vestments as the attire of an idol. 2. [in burlesque.] A good drubbing, நல்லடி. சாத்துக்கவி, s. A poem prefixed or affixed to a work, by a different hand. சாத்துநாற்று--சாத்துநாறு, s. Young plants planted in the place of those which have died. (R.) திருக்கடைக்காப்புச்சாத்த, inf. To shut the door of the temple, கோயிற்கதவுமூட. 2. To finish a poem addressed to a deity by making the last verse. See under திரு. வில்வஞ்சாத்த, inf. To cast the fragrant leaves of the வில்வம் tree at the feet of the idol. See வில்வம். 41) *
