aṉṟu (p. 34) s. That day, then, any time but the present, அந்நாள். 2. (The third person masc. sing. of the defective verb, அல்.) It is not (that, but something else), அல்லது. 3. An expletive, அசைச் சொல்--as, ஆயதன்றே; for ஆயது, it happened. 4. [in poetry.] அன்று, is used for அன்றி--as, நாளன்றுபோகி, for நாளன்றிப்போகி. அன்றன்று. Daily, every day.-Note. In the high dialect, words which imply time and end in று or டு, are made adjectives by changing the preceding ன், or ண், into ற், or ட், and உ, into ஐ--as அன்று, is made அற்றை, இன்றுஇற்றை; also ஆண்டு-ஆட்டை, yearly. அன்றாடம், adv. Daily. (c.) அன்றினர், s. Foes, opponents, பகைவர்; [ex இனம்.] (பிரபுலிங்க.) அன்றுமுதல். From that day forward. அன்றெரிந்தான், s. A small shrub, ஓர்பூண்டு. அன்றே--அன்றைத்தினம்--அன் றையதினம், s. ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். One of the five parts of a day as found in தொல்காப்பியம், &c. சிறுபோகம், s. The harvest of the inferior kinds of grain. (c.) சிறுப்பம்--சிறுவம், s. [prop. சிறுபரு வம்.] Youth, early life, இளமை. சிறுப்பத்திலே யடித்துவளர்க்கவேணும். One should be under proper correction and training while young. சிறுமட்டம், s. [vul.] A short, young horse, a pony, a nag, சிறுகுதிரை. (c.) 2. [prov.] Small measure, சிற்றளவு. 3. A young plantain tree, சிறுவாழை. 4. A young elephant, குட்டியானை. 5. A young man or woman rather short, குள்ளம். சிறுமணி, s. Little bells tied round children's waist, சதங்கை. 2. A kind of rice, ஓர்நெல். சிறுமணிப்பயறு, s. [prov.] A kind of கா ராமணிப்பயறு. (c.) சிறுமலை, s. A hill, a hillock. 2. The hill near அம்மையநாயக்கனூர், in the district of Dindigul, the Serumalay range. சிறுமலைப்பழம், s. A kind of plantains of a peculiar flavor, growing in the above hills. சிறுமல்லிகை, s. A small kind of jasmine. See மல்லிகை. சிறுமுட்டி, s. [loc.] A smith's handhammer, சிறுசுத்தியல். சிறுமுள்ளி, s. A kind of முள்ளி plant. சிறுமூலகம்--சிறுமூலம், s. Long pepper, திப்பிலி. 2. An esculent root, ஓர்கிழங்கு. சிறுவம், s. See சிறுப்பம். சிறுவயது, s. Youth, boy-hood. சிறுவரை, s. A small thing, a particle, a trifle, அற்பம். 2. (நாலடி.) A small division of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. Any of the six divisions of a day, சிறுபொழுது. சிறுவல், s. [prov.] A child, குழந்தை. சிறுவழுதுணை, s. A kind of brinjal. See வழுதுணை. சிறுவள்ளி, s. A creeper. See வள்ளி. சிறுவன், s. (fem. சிறுவி.) A son, புத ல்வன். 2. A boy, a lad, a youngster, இளையோன். சிறுவாடு, s. Small savings in money; or jewels, &c., realized from those savings, சொற்பதேட்டம். (c.) சிறுவிதி, s. Daksha, தக்கன். (ஸ்காந்தம்.) சிறுவிதிமகஞ்சிதைத்தோன், s. Virabadra, the destroyer of the sacrifice of Daksha, வீரபத்திரன். சிறுவிரல், s. The little finger or toe. சிறுவிலை, s. Scarcity of provisions; high sale, high price, பஞ்சம். சிறுஉமரி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு. See உமரி. சிறுவெள்ளரி, s. A kind of musk melon. சிற்றகத்தி, s. A tree. See அகத்தி. சிற்றடி--சீறடி, s. A small, delicate foot. See அடி. (p.) சிற்றடியார், s. Most humble servants. (in self-abasement.) சிற்றப்பன், s. (fem. சிற்றாத்தாள்.) An uncle, the father's younger brother, or the mother's younger sister's husband, சிறியதகப்பன். 2. [prov.] A step father. சிற்றமட்டி--சிற்றமுட்டி--சிற்றாமுட்டி, s. A plant, used for medicine; oppo. to பேராமுட்டி, ஓர்பூடு. Pavonia zeylanica, L. சிற்றமட்டியெண்ணெய், s. [prov.] A medicinal oil, in which the root of சிற்ற முட்டி forms a principal ingredient. சிற்றம்மான்பச்சரிசி, s. See அம்மான் பச்சரிசி. சிற்றரத்தை, s. A medicinal bark the root of which forms a drug. See அரத்தை. சிற்றரிவாள், s. [com. சித்தறுவாள்.] A small sickle. சிற்றல்லி, s. A flower-creeper. See அல்லி. சிற்றவரை, s. A kind of beans. See அவரை. சிற்றறிவு--சிற்றுணர்வு, s. Little knowledge; feeble, weak intellect. 2. Knowledge of secular things, as distinguished from spiritual knowledge or பேரறிவு enjoyed by the deity and by souls who have made great attainments in abstract devotion. சிற்றறிவோர்--சிற்றுணர்வோர், s. Persons of little knowledge, learning, minds, &c. See அறிவு. சிற்றறுகு, s. A grass, Agrostis. See அறுகு. சிற்றாடை, s. [com. சித்தாடை.] A cloth or garment for a little girl. See ஆடை. சிற்றாதாயம், s. Embezzlement, fraud, கள்ளச்சிறுதேட்டு. (c.) சிற்றாத்தாள், s. See சிற்றப்பன். சிற்றாமணக்கு, s. The castor plant. See ஆமணக்கு. சிற்றாமுட்டி, s. A plant. See சிற்ற மட்டி. (c.) சிற்றாம்பல், s. A flower plant. See ஆம்பல். சிற்றாயி--சின்னாயி, s. The mother's younger sister; a maternal younger aunt. சிற்றாலவட்டம், s. The smaller circular fan. See ஆலவட்டம். சிற்றாள், s. [com. சித்தாள்.] A servant boy, a young hireling. See ஆள். சிற்றாறு, s. A small river. See ஆறு. சிற்றி, s. [loc. சித்தி.] The wife of the father's younger brother, also the mother's younger sister, சின்னாயி. 2. Purslane, பசரி. Portulaca, L. (R.) சிற்றிதழ், s. A small quantity of food, a morsel, சிற்றுண் டி. 3. Food--spoken diminutively, சாப்பாடு. சிற்றிலக்கம், s. Fractions, numbers under units, சிற்றெண். சிற்றிலை, s. A plant with an esculent root, நெய்ச்சிட்டி. 2. The குன்றி shrub. 3. A tree, கடுமரம். (M. Dic.) சிற்றில், s. A hut, a hovel, சிறுகுடில். 2. tiṉ (p. 241) கிறேன், றேன் பேன், ன, v. a. To eat, to feed, to take a meal, உண்ண. 2. [in poetry.] To eat light food, pastries and relishes, &c., சிற்றுண்டிபுசிக்க. 3. To chew, to masticate, மெல்ல. 4. To devour--said of an animal, பட்சிக்க. 5. To eat away, consume, corrode--as white ants, ironmould, rust, &c., அரிக்க. (c.) தின்றதெல்லாஞ்சமித்துப்போயிற்று. What he has eaten is digested; i. e. he ahs forgotten the benefits I have done him. தின்றுகொழுத்துப்போனான். By eating (of my food) he is become fat and saucy. (In abuse.) செல்லுதின்றுவிடும். The white ants will eat away. தின்னாவீட்டில்தின்னி. One who eats with low families. [prov.] மண்தின்றுவிடும். The earth will corrode it. இந்தஎருதுஅந்தஎருதைத்தின்றுவிடும். This ox will surpass that. நேற்றுத்தின்றதீன்அல்லவோ. Is not the (work, &c.) for what ate yesterday; i. e. I want food to day. புல்லைத்தின்னும்மாடுஉதவுகிறதுபோலப்புலியைத்தின் னுஞ்சென்னாய்உதவுமோ. Will a wild dog which kills the tiger be as useful as an ox that eats grass; i e. will any one who lives luxuriously labor like one who takes plain food? யானைத்தின்றவிளாங்களிபோலே. Like the woodapple which the elephant had eaten (swallowed); i. e. hollow, the substance being absorbed through the unbroken shell. தின்பண்டம், s. (com. தீன்பண்டம்.) Eatables, including pastry and fruits. தின்பண்டநல்கல், v. noun. One of the thirty-two acts of charity. See அறம். தின்றல்---தின்னல்--தின்னுதல், v. noun. A eating. தின்றி, s. Eatables, தீன். தின்றிப்போத்து, s. (Tel. திிபோது.) A glutton; (lit.) a well-fed bull. தின்றுகழிக்க, inf. To loathe food from satiety. தின்னாச்சாதி, s. Low castes, with whom it is disgraceful to eat.
