iruttu (p. 50) கிறேன், இருத்தினேன், வேன், இருத்த, v. a. To cause to sit, to seat, உட்காரச்செய்ய. 2. To detain, cause one to remain for a short time, தாமதிக்கச்செய்ய. 3. To press down or upon, bear upon, press with a style or other instrument, அழுத்த. 4. To beat down--as a floor, beat into-as a nail, to make firm or compact by beating, அடித்திருத்த. 5. To be stingy, parsimonious, tenacious, செலவு செய்யாதிருக்க. இறுகவிறுக, [adverbially.] Very tight, drawn tighter and tighter, அழுந்த வழுந்த. இறுகினகை, s. kṉ (p. 102) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To be heavy, to become heavy, massive, solid, thick, hard, injurated, பாரமா யிருக்க. 2. To be thick, close, crowded, numerous, பருக்க. 3. To be abundant, copious, to outweigh, &c., அதிகரிக்க; the infinitive used adverbially expresses very much. கனக்கக்கொடுத்தான். He gave plentifully. கனத்தஉடைமைக்கனர்த்தமில்லை. Solid property will not soon be injured. காரியங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The matter has become more serious. குற்றங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The crime is aggravated. குரல்கனத்துப்போயிற்று. The voice is become heavy, hoarse--as of one who has reached manhood, one who drinks liquor, &c. கனத்தஆக்கினை, s. Severe punishment. கனத்தகுடி, s. An illustrious and noble family. கனத்தசமுசாரம், s. A numerous family. கனத்ததோல், s. Thick skin--as that of a beast or of the hand, &c., hardened and thickened by labor. கனத்தநாள், s. A critical day in diseases--as the day of new or full moon, &c., when the influence of the planets is unusually powerful, aggravating disease, &c. On such days it is deemed improper to bathe, take medicine, &c. (c.). கனத்தபயிர், s. A thick crop. கனத்தபனி, s. A heavy dew. கனத்தமனிதன், s. A large heavy man. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To become heavy--as the body, by disease, humors, corpulency, &c. தலைகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To grow heavy--as the head through cold. வயிறுகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To have indigestion. 2. To eat a belly-full, to be well stuffed. 3. To become gravid; sometimes in this meaning, spoken in contempt, of pregnancy from illicit intercourse. கனப்பு, v. noun. To be dried, lessened, as the blood of an emaciated person, இரத்தஞ்சு ண்ட. 3. To pinch internally, gripe throb, வயிறுசுண்ட. 4. To impinge--as a strained line, or bow-string in reaction, கயிறுசுண்ட. 5. To be tight, as a string or as a muscle in cramp, &c., நரம்புமுதலியனஇழுக்க. (c.) சுண்டக்கட்ட, inf. To let the curry or porridge, &c., become dry and hard, when boiling. அவனைச்சுண்டவுலர்த்திப்போட்டார்கள். They have reduced and weakened him, (by diet, bleeding, &c.) அவன்முகஞ்சுண்டிப்போயிற்று. tākku (p. 232) கிறேன், தாக்கினேன், வேன், தாக்க, v. n. and v. a. To strike, beat, hit, dash against, beat down; to jerk, to twitch, அடிக்க. 2. Most of the meanings are used in cant. மனதிலேதாக்கவில்லை. This has not reached the mind. பழையகோபமெல்லாம்வைத்துத்தாக்குகிறார். Keeping in mind all his old grudges, he is now revenging himself. சரீரத்திலேதாக்கும். It will have lasting effects of he body. செலவிலேதாக்கும். Expenses will increase 2. The expence will be heavy. நிறையத்தாக்கிவிட்டான். He is quite intoxicated; (lit.) full of liquor. 14)

To treat tenderly. with great kindness as a child or a friend, பராமரிக்க. 1. To solicit cringingly, கெஞ்ச. 11. To press against to strike, to graze a boil so as to cause pain, ஊன்ற. 12. To maintain, to have--as a disposition, சாதிக்க. 13. To tolerate. suffer permit, இடங்கொடுக்க. 14. To wear, to be invested with, தரிக்க. 15. To halt in speaking or walking, நிறுத்த. (c.) இந்தப்போசனம்சீவனத்துக்குத்தாங்காது. This food will not support life. காற்றுக்குத்தாங்காது. It will not bear the wind. என்னாலேஅவ்வளவுகொடுக்கத்தாங்காது. I cannot afford to give so much. அவன்அடிதாங்குவான். He can endure blows. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடுகொடுத்துத்தாங்காது. No one can afford to feed him. காலைத்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The animal limps in walking. அவனையேதாங்கிக்கொண்டுதிரிகிறான். He pleases him, to gain his own purpose. அவன்கையைத்தாங்கு. Ward off his hand, his blow, &c. மறுமொழிச்சொல்லித்தாங்காது. There is no end of answering such questions. [prov.] சரீரந்தாங்காது. The constitution will not hear it. தாங்கித்தாங்கிப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks haltingly. மாடுகால்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The bullock hobbles (by pain in the hoof). தாங்கத்தாங்கத்தலையிலேற. To become the more arrogant, the more kindness is shown. 2. To be supercilious on account of humble applications. மலையைமலைதாங்கவேண்டும்மண்ணாங்கட்டிதாங்கு மா. One moutain supports another, can a clod of earth do it? விஞ்சையிற்றாங்கினன் சடையன் வெண்ணெய்யிற் தஞ்சமென்றோர்களைத்தாங்குந்தன்மைபோல். (Nalan) upheld, by charms (the mountain), as Sadaiyan of Truvennainallur supported those who came to him for refuge. (இராமா.) தாங்கமாட்டான். One unable to endure. தாங்குகோல், s. [prov.] A boat-men's pole, தோணிதாங்குகோல். தாங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To bear in mind, to brook. 2. To sustain sickness, adversity, &c. தாங்கிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry in the arms. 2. To receive and treat very civilly or politely. 3. To escort or conduct, as a lady by the arm. 4. To solicit very urgently. தாங்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To bear. 2. To ward off, to screen, &c. 3. To maintain, to support. 4. To endure, சகிக்க. தாங்கித்தடுக்கிட, inf. To treat very tenderly; (lit.) to bear one up and spread a mat for him. (c.) தாங்கிவெட்ட, inf. To cut or hew lightly. கைதாங்கியடிக்க, inf. To beat or strike lightly. கைதாங்கியுழ, inf. To plough lightly. தாங்கல், v. noun. Bearing, supporting. சுமத்தல். 2. A grievance, விசனப்படுகை. 3. Displeasure, regret, umbrage, மனக் குறை. (c.) அவர்உன்மேலே மெத்தவுந்தாங்கலாயிருக்கிறார். He is much grieved with you. மனத்தாங்கல், v. noun. Want of cordiality. தாங்கல்வருத்துவிக்க, inf.
