The eighteen principal puranas are; 1. சைவம், Saiva. 2. காந்தம், Skanda; 3. இலிங்கம், Linga; 4. கூர்மம், Kurma; 5. வாமனம், Vamana; 6. வராகம், Varaka; 7. பௌடிகம் or பவிஷியம், Bhavishyat or prophetic; 8. மச்சியம், Matsya; 9. மார்க்கண்டேயம், Markandeya; 1. பிர மாண்டம், Bra'hmanda or egg of Brahma. According to சதுரகராதி, these are Saiva puranas. 11. நாரதீயம், Naradiya; 12. பாகவதம்; Bagavat, describing the ten incarnations of Vishnu; 13. காரூடம், Garuda; 14. வைணவம், Vaishnava. These four are Vaishnava puranas. 15. பிரமம், Brahma; 16. பதுமம், Patma or the lotus. These two are Brahma puranas. 17. பிரமகைவர்த்தம்; Brahmakaivarta, or transformations of Brahma or Krishna; purana of the sun. 18. ஆக்கினேயம், Agneya, of the god of fire.--Note. The above were all written in Sanscrit and but few of them are yet translated into Tamil. There are also eighteen secondaries, called உபபுராணம், and many of an inferior order, called ஸ்தலபுராணம், written in praise of sacred places. புராணங்கேட்க, inf. To hear the puranas read.
