ākāmiyam (p. 35) s. Vileness, impiety, deviation from the rules prescribed in the shasters, அதிக்கிரமம். 2. (p.) The actions of the present life in reference to their effects in future births. See கன்மம். 15) *
கன்மம்
kaṉmam (p. 102) s. Moral actions, especially in their effects--as the cause of transmigrations and their accompanying joys and sorrows, pleasure and pains, intelligence or stupidity, &c., சஞ்சிதகன்மம். 2. Actions, செய்தொழில். 3. Evil actions, evil, vice, தீவினை. (See கருமம்.) 4. Fate, destiny, the fruits, retributions, &c., of actions in former births, பிராரத்தகன்மம். Wils. p. 198. KARMMAN. In the Agamas, actions and their effects are of three classes, viz: 1. ஆகாமியம், moral actions, good and evil of the present life, considered as the source of future births with their suffering and enjoyment. 2. சஞ்சிதம், the accumulated actions of the soul in former births, the retributions of which are to be experienced in future transmigrations. 3. பிராரத்தம் or பிராரத்துவம், the enjoyment and sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present state --as the retributions of actions in former births. அவனைக்கொல்லாதேகன்மம்பிடிக்கும். Do not kill him, if you do, the action will seize you. கன்மங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. See கருமங் கட்டுப்பட. கன்மகாண்டம், s. A medical book treating of diseases, as caused by the sins of former births, and the means necessary to remove them, so that medicines may prove effectual, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். கன்மசண்டாளன், s. See கரும சண்டாளன். கன்மசாந்தி, s. A ceremony for the expiation of the evil of former deeds, கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மஞ்செய்தகுடி, s. A family guilty of wicked actions in former births, now made manifest by their sufferings. கன்மத்தியாகம், s. Expiation of the evil of a former birth. கன்மத்துரோகி, s. A wicked wretch, a criminal, சண்டாளன். கன்மநிவர்த்தி--கன்மநிவாரணம், s. See கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மந்தொலைய, inf. To become extinct, to be worked or eaten out and terminated--as former evil deeds. கன்மபந்தம், s. [as கருமபந்தம்.] The bond or connexion between the sins of former births and their subsequent punishment. கன்மபரிபாகம், s. Ripening, or expiration of the accumulated merit of the actions of former births, கன்மவொழிவு. கன்மபாதகம், s. A heinous crime. கன்மபாதகன், s. One guilty of some heinous crime, கொடியபாதகன். கன்மபூமி, s. The earth as the theatre of moral actions, or place where virtue and vice are practised, and their respective merit and demerit accumulated, பூலோகம். கன்மம்பிடிக்க, inf. To attend, follow, or pursue--as the guilt of crimes personified. கன்மம்புசிக்க, inf. To experience the good or evil of former actions. கன்மவலை, s. The net of moral actions, கன்மபாசம், i. e. the entanglements of births, or actions and their result, in subsequent transmigrations. கன்மவாதனை, s. See கருமவேதனை. கன்மரோகம்--கன்மவியாதி, s. See கருமவியாதி. கன்மவுடம்பு, s. Bodies assumed, as a result of former deeds, கன்மசரீரம். கன்மாதி, s. Funeral rites, &c., for deceased ancestors, கர்மாதி. கன்மி, s. A heinous sinner, a perpetrator of crimes, கருமி. கன்மேந்திரியம், s. The five organs of action, தொழிற்கருவி. See இந்திரியம். 68)
காதி
kāti (p. 104) s. An ancient king, sovereign of Kanyakubja, and father of Visvamitra, ஓரரசன். (p.) Wils. p. 287. GADHI. 2. [in the Jaina philosophy.] Spiritual darkness and the delusions consequent upon it. ஓர்வகைக்கன்மம்; [ex காதம், killing.] 3. A kind of arsenic in its natural state, மிரத பாஷாணம். காதிமைந்தன், s. Visvamitra, as the son of காதி, விசுவாமித்திரன். காதிவென்றோன், s. Argha, as the conqueror of காதி, அருகன். (நிக.) 21) *

kāmiyam (p. 104) s. A thing desired, an object of desire, that which is done for some particular object--as religious ceremonies, &c.--opposed to நிட்காமியம். Wils. p. 212. KAMYA. 2. One of the three evil passions, the principle of lust, &c. See கான்மிகம். காமியகன்மம், s. Works done to obtain some benefit, பயனைவிரும்பிச் செய்யுங் கிரியை. காமியக்கல், s. One of the nine precious stones, கோமேதகம். காமியமரணம், s. A voluntary death; suicide by plunging into the Ganges, &c., forbidden to the Brahman, but meritorious in the other castes. 74) *
காலம்
kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) The time appointed for death, as distinguished from that for accident death, முடிவு. 6. [in gram.] Tense; also, the characteristic of a tense, வினையின்காலம். The three tenses are, இறந்தகாலம், எதிர்காலம், நிகழ்காலம். 7. [in music.] The three measure--as (1.) விளம் பம், slow. (2.) துரிதம், quick. &c. (3.) மத் திமம், the medium. 8. Epoch, era, யுகம். 9. Weather, காலவியல்பு. காலத்துக்குத்தக்ககோலம். Adapting one's self to the times. காலத்துக்குத்தக்கதாய்நடக்க. inf. To live according to circumstances. காலம்போம்வார்த்தைநிற்கும். Time files, but words remain. காலகதி, s. Events of time, காலநடை. காலகதியை யாவருங் கடக்கமாட்டார்கள். None cane escape the events of time. காலகருமம்--காலகன்மம், s. Employments, duties, &c., appropriate to an age, time, season, stage of life, &c., காலத்துக் குரியசெய்கை. காலக்கிரமம், s. The course of time; chronological order, காலவொழுங்கு. காலக்கிரயம், s. The price of the articles for the time being; current or market price, காலவிலை. காலக்குறி, s. Signs of the time. காலக்கொடுமை, s. The evils, calamities, &c., of time. காலங்கண்டவன், s. An experienced man; an aged person. காலங்கரந்தபெயரெச்சம், s. [in gram.] A relative participle without the characteristics of the tenses--as in கொல் யானை. காலங்கழிக்க, inf. To pass time கா லம்போக்க. காலங்கழிய, inf. To pass--as time, நாட்கழிய. காலங்கூட, inf. [local.] To die. காலசக்கரம், s. The different number of years of influence ascribed to the respective planets as operative on the lives of persons, ஆயுள்நியதிச்சக்கரம். 2. The aggregate of the years of the nine planets according to their respective influence, கிரகபலச்சக்கரம். 3. Period or term of life, ஆயுட்காலம். Wils. p. 216. KALACHAKRA.. அவனுக்குக்காலச்சக்கரமுடிவுவந்துவிட்டது. The end of his term is come. காலசங்கதி, s. Intelligence, news or events of the time or the day. காலசங்கை, s. Guess of time from mere inspection, காலஉத்தேசம். 2. Reckoning of time, காலக்கணக்கு. (p.) காலசந்தி, s. The daily morning worship; also applicable to that at noon and evening. 2. The interval between any two yugas, kalpas, &c. See கற்பம் and சந்தி. திரிகாலசந்தி, s. Worship in the morning, at noon and in the evening. காலசுகம், s. Favorableness of the time, astrologically and superstitiously considered. காலஞ்செல்ல, inf. To depart this life, to die. 2. [prov.] To be late. காலக்ஷயம்--காலட்சயம், s. Passing one's time or days, காலக்கழிவு. காலக்ஷேபம்--காலட்சேபம் s. Passing one's time or days; circumstances, welfare, &c., காலங்கழிக்கை. 2. Means of subsistence, சீவனம். Wils. p. 216. KALAKSHEPA. 3. [among the Vaishnavas.] The reading of the sacred books, திருவாய் மொழியோதல். உமதுகாலட்சேபம் எப்படி. How do you do; i.e. how are your affairs? காலதருமம்--காலதன்மம், s. The events appropriate to certain times or yugas respectively, காலத்தன்்மை. Wils. p. 217. KALAD'HARMMA. காலதாமதம், s. Delay, protraction, procrastination, தாமசம். காலதுரிதம், s. The rapid progress of time, காலத்தின்விரைவு. காலத்திரயம், s. The three divisions of time--as past, present, and future; also the three tenses, முக்காலம். காலநியமம், s. Events happening in their respective and appropriate seasons, according to the actions that gave them birth, காலநியதி. 2. Religious ceremonies according to the given periods of the year or day, காலக்கடன். காலநிரூபணம், s. Chronology. (modern usage.) காலநுட்பம், s. A small portion of time, காலத்தின்நுண்ணியபங்கு. காலநெடுமை--நெடுங்காலம், s. Length of time, a long time. காலநேமி, s. An Asura, ஓர் அசுரன். Wils. p. 217. KALANEMI. காலநேரம், s. Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. In the morning, early, betimes. காலம்பண்ண--காலம்பண்ணிப்போக, inf. To finish one's time, to die. காலம்பார்க்க, inf. To look or watch for a proper time or opportunity, சமயம் பார்க்க. காலம்புரள, inf. To present a manifest revolution--as in the order of things; to be irregular, deranged, &c.--as the events of a time--as toddy-drawers seen riding in palankeens, &c. காலம்போக்க, inf. To pass the times. 2. To while away time. காலவகை, s. Seasons, times, காலக் கூறுபாடு. 2. Circumstances depending on time, காலவேறுபாடு. காலவர்த்தமானம், s. Events of the times. காலவழக்கம், s. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. The time of death. ஆங்கால மெய்வருந்த வேண்டா வதுதானே தேங்காய்க் கிளநீர்போற் சேருமே, போங்காலம் காட்டானை தின்ற கனியதுபோ லாகுமே தேட்டாளன் றேடுந் தனம். Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். At what time soever, always. சாங்காலம், s. The time of death or ruin. திரிகாலம்--முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time, present, past, and future. 2.The three tenses of a verb. திரிசந்திகாலம். The three parts or divisions of the day: viz., காலை, morning. உச்சி, noon. மாலை, evening. புண்ணியகாலம், s. See under புண்ணி யம். போங்காலம், s. The time of separation or ruin. 155) *
குலம்
kulam (p. 127) s. [in poet. குலன்.] Tribe, family, lineage, race; caste, nation, people, சாதி. 2. Herd, flock, shoal, assemblage, collection, கூட்டம். 3. Kind, class, species, sort, genus, இனம். 4. House, abode, மனை. 5. Royal palace, அரமனை. Wils. p. 233. KULA. 6. Family, rank, respectability or eminence of descent, உயர்குலம். 7. (Rott.) An inhabited country, குடி. 8. (பிங்.) The twentyseventh lunar asterism, or nacshatra; also, the time the moon accupies in traversing the nacshatra, இரேவதி. குரங்கானாலுங்குலத்திலெடு. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. A woman reputed for chastity. 3. A woman of good family and caste, and of repute for chastity. குலக்கொழுந்து, s. A rare son, the sprout or hope of the family. குலவிளக்கு, s. A light to the family or caste-spoken of a chaste matron. குலங்கெட்டவன், s. One who has lost his caste; an object, low-caste fellow. குலசிரேட்டன்--குலஸ்தன்--குலத்தன்-குலமான், s. One born of a good family. குலட்சயம், s. The ruin or decay of a family or tribe. wills. p. 233. KULAKSHAYA. குலதருமம், s. The customs, duties, offices, &c., peculiar to, or proper for, a caste, &c. Wils. 233. KULAD'HARMMA. குலதிலகம்--குலதிலதம், s. One who is an honor to his family; the respectable head of a family. 2. Very pure lineage; eminence of caste. Wils. p. 233. KULATILAKA. குலதம்பிரான்--குலகுரு, s. A family guru, the guru of a race or tribe. குலதெய்வம், s. The family, tutelary deity. 2. The deity of the tribe. குலத்துக்குத்தக்ககுணம், s. Disposition, habits, or propensities peculiar to a caste. குலத்துக்குத்தக்கநடை, s. Behaviour suitable to one's caste. குலந்தெரிக்க, inf. To dwell on another's parentage--commonly in ridicule. குலபதி, s. The head of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 233. KULAPATI. குலப்பகை, s. Natural antagonism between different species--as between cats and dogs. 2. In-bred malice, hatred, &c., between tribes, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழி, s. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)

The seven distinguished mountains in India: மகேந்திரம், மலயம், சகியம், சத்திமான், இருட்சம், பாரிபாத்திரம், மாவிந்தம்; (காந்.) also seven mountains which are fancied to exit in each of the seven Dwipas. சத்தசாகரம்--சத்தசமுத்திரம், s. The seven circumambient seas. (See கடல்.) 2. Met. Abundance. சத்தசாகரமாய்ப்பெய்தது. It rained abundantly, (lit.) As it were the seven seas. சத்தசுரம், s. The seven musical tones or notes, represented by the letters ச, ரி, க, ம, ப, த,நி. See சுரம். சத்ததாது, s. The seven constituent parts of the body. See தாது. சத்ததாரணை, s. One of the தாரணை. See தாரணை. சத்ததாளம், s. The seven modes of beating drums. See தாளம். சத்ததீர்த்தம், s. The seven sacred rivers. See நதி. சத்ததீவு, s. The seven circumambient Dwipas. See தீவு. சத்ததேவத்திரவியானுமானம், s. [R. Catholic usage.] The seven sacraments. சத்தநரகம், s. The seven hells. See நரகம். சத்தபாதாளம், s. The seven patalas or abysses, fabled to be the abodes of Titans, Nagas, and Rakshas.Note. These are different from the Puranic hells. See பாதாளம். சத்தபுரி, s. The seven sacred cities. See புரி. சத்தமண்டலம், s. The seven regions or worlds. See மண்டலம். சத்தமருத்துக்கள், s. The seven kinds of winds. See மருத்துக்கள். சத்தமி, s. The seventh day after the new or full moon, ஓர்திதி. சத்தமேகம், s. The seven kinds of clouds. See மேகம். சத்தராசிகம், s. Rule of seven, a compound rule of proportion in which seven terms are employed, ஓரெண்வகை. (Modern.) சத்தரிஷிகள்--சத்தவிருடிகள், s. The seven famous Rishis, viz; அங்கிரன், அத் திரி, கிரது, மரீசி, புலகன், புலத்தியன், வசிட்டன், 2. Ursa major or Great Bear, in the heavens, to which the seven Rishis are fabled to have been transferred. See முனிவர். சத்தலோகம், s. The seven metals. See உலோகம். சத்தவருக்கம், s. The seven stages of the soul, from ignorance and self-delusion, to the knowledge of the Brahm, and consequent felicity; viz. 1. அஞ்ஞானம். 2. ஆவரணம். 3. விட்சேபம். 4. பரோட்சம். 5. அபரோட்சம். 6. சோகநிவர்த்தி. 7. ஆனந்தம். caṟ (p. 173) adj. [A sanscrit prefix.] Good, right, excellent, virtuous, &c., நல்ல, உச்சித. W. p. 884. SAT. சற்கருமம்--சற்கன்மம், s. Good deeds, charitable or meritorious acts. See கரு மம். சற்கன்மபரிபாகம், s. The maturing of works of merit performed in previous births, supposed to promote the illumination of the soul, and to lead to the use of means for its deliverance from transmigrations. (p.) சற்கரிக்க, inf. To treat hospitably, to entertain, உபசரிக்க. 2. To be kind, polite, civil, obliging; [ex சற்காரம்.] சற்காரம், s. Kindness, beneficence, hospitality, civility, உபசாரம். W. p. 884. SATKARA. (p.) சற்காரியம், s. Good things, virtuous deeds, pursuits, &c., meritorious actions. சற்காரியவித்தை, s. The four incidents connected with births as necessary for the performance of actions, namely. 1. தனு, body for the performance of actions. 2. கரணம், intellectual faculties, the senses, &c. 3. புவனம், word, locality--as the theatre of actions. 4. போகம், suffering and enjoyment. (p.) சற்குணம், s. An obliging disposition, amiableness, good nature, benevolence, religion. (c.) சற்குணன், appel. n. An amiable, virtuous, obliging person. சற்குரு, s. A guru who seeks the good of his disciples, நற்குரு. 2. The deity--as the teacher of souls, according to their various states. (c.) சற்சங்கம், s. Good society. (p.) சர்சனர், s. [prop. சச்சனர்.] Good or pious men. (c.) சற்சலம், s. Good, pure water, நல்ல சலம். (p.) (சது.) சற்சூத்திரர், s. Superior sudras who have advanced to the கிரியை, or second degree in the Saiva religion; also called சைவர். (p.) சற்பாத்திரம், s. A good vessel, i.e. a worthy, pious, virtuous man, ஒழுக்க முடையோன். W. p. 885. SATPATRA. சற்பிரசாதம், s. A divine gift, a boon, தேவப்பிரசாதம். 2. A sacred offering, நிவே தனம். 3. [in Christ. usage.] Sacrament of the Lord's supper, நற்கருணை. See பிரசா தம். (c.) சற்புத்தி, s. Virtuous propensity, good disposition, நல்லறிவு. சற்புத்திரன், s. A dutiful son, நற்புதல் வன். (c.) 2. (fig.) A disciple dutiful to his Guru, சீஷன். 3. One of the second or கிரியை degree in the Saiva religion, or one faithful to his duties in the degree, கிரியையினிற்போன். சற்புத்திரமார்க்கம், s. Religious course of the second or கிரியை class in the Saiva system. See மார்க்கம். சற்புருடன், s. A moral, virtuous, good man, நல்லவன். 46)

cavuḷam (p. 173) --சவுளகம், s. Shaving, மயிர் கழிக்கை. See சௌரம். (p.) சவுளகன்மம், s. The ceremony of first shaving a child, generally at the age of nine-months, பிறந்தமயிரெடுக்கை. 7) *

cātam (p. 175) s. Boiled rice, சோறு. (Compare பிரசாதம்); [ex Sa. Sata.] (c.) 2. Truth, verity, உண்மை. Compare சதம். 3. W. p. 347. JATA. Birth, nativity, production, பிறப்பு. 4. A vampire, goblin, பூதம். Compare சாதகம். (சது.) சாதகர்மம்--சாதகன்மம், s. Ceremonies performed as the birth of a child, as giving gifts, bathing, tonsure, &c., also touching the child's tongue three times with ghee. W. p. 347. JATAKARMMA. --Note. The husband is not shaved during the wife's pregnancy, lest evil should happen to the infant. சாதங்கறி, s. Rice and curry. (c.) சாதம்படைக்க--சாதம்போட, inf. To set or distribute boiled rice. அரிசிச்சாதம், s. Rice not well boiled. உண்டைச்சாதம், s. Rice boiled and formed into balls. கட்டிச்சாதம், s. Boiled rice preserved in a small piece of cloth by a traveller. கறையற்சாதம், s. [prov.] Rice overboiled; [ex கரை, v.] தயிர்ச்சாதம், s. Rice mixed with curds, &c., sometimes presented to idols. பழையசாதம், s. (also பழையது.) Boiled rice mixed with water and kept over night for breakfast. பட்டைச்சாதம், s. [loc.] Rice boiled and set before the idol on a salver in the form of a cup, in which it had been moulded. கும்பற்சாதம், s. See under கும்பு, v. பிச்சைச்சாதம், s. [com. பிச்சைச்சோறு.] Boiled rice for the poor. பொங்கற்சாதம், s. Rice with the water not strained off, but left to steep. See பொங்கல். 5) *

A person of good disposition, நற்குணன். சுதினம், s. An auspicious day, நல்லநாள். சுவிசேஷம், s. [Christ. usage.] A good message--the Gospel. 3)

cupam (p. 194) s. Fortunateness, propitiousness, auspiciousness, luckiness. (See அஷ்டசுபம்.) 2. Happiness, felicity, gratification, spiritula delight, பாக்கியம். 3. Goodness, excellence, favourableness, நன்மை. 4. Congratulation, benediction, வாழ்த்து. 5. One of the twenty-seven astrological yogas, இருபத் தேழுயோகத்தொன்று. W. p. 852. S'UB'HA.-Note. The opposite is அசுபம். சுபகதி, s. Bliss, beatitude; [ex கதி.] (p.) சுபகரன், s. (fem. சுபகரி.) A beneficent person, உபகாரன். (p.) சுபகருமம்--சுபகன்மம்--சுபகாரியம், s. Good, auspicious deeds, &c.--as சுகன் மம். சுபகாலம், s. [in astrol.] An auspicious time; a joyful, prosperous time, நல்லகாலம். சுபக்கிரகம், s. An auspicious or benign planet--as the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus. (p.) சுபக்ஷேமம், s. Sound health--as சுக சேமம். சுபசகுனம், s. A good omen, நற்சகு னம். சுபசொரூபம், s. Benignant appearance or manifestation, &c. (p.) சுபசோபனம், s. Joyful tidings, or events--as of the birth of a child, or of a girl's becoming marriageable. (c.) சுபசேதி--சுபசெய்தி, s. Joyful tidings, happy events. (p.) சுபதினம், s. (Astrologically.) A fortunate day, நல்லநாள். 2. (R.) A mode of salutation somewhat like 'Good day' but in implies, that the meeting is fortunate. (Modern.) சுபத்தானம்--சுபஸ்தானம், s. [in astrol.] An auspicipus or favorable position of a planet; [ex தானம்.] (p.) சுபமங்களம், s. Auspicious benediction, by brahmans, &c. சுபமஸ்து, s. Salutation, success, prosperity; a sanscrit term of benediction at the opening of a treatise, &c., மங்களச்சொல்; [ex அஸ்து.] சுபமிருத்து, s. A good or auspicious death. (p.) சுபயோகம், s. Auspicious yogas, being eighteen out of twenty-seven. (See யோகம்.) 2. The conjunction of an auspicious day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. (p.) சுபவசனம்--சுபவாக்கு--சுபவாசகம் --சுபவார்த்தை, s. Auspicious language; agreeable, or propitious words. சுபவாதனை, s. Blissful experience of the soul; divine illumination, spiritual enjoyment. (p.) சுபவாரம், s. Auspicious days of the week. சுபாசுபம், s. Good and ill-luck, auspicious and inauspicious appearances, commonly in reference to weddings, and funeral, நன்மையுந்தீமையும்; [ex அசுபம்.] சுபாதிசயம், s. Favorable tidings, good news, சுபக்ஷேமம்; [ex அதிசயம்.] தங்கள்சுபாதிசயங்களை எழுதியனுப்பப் பிரார்த்திக்கி றேன். I beg to be informed of your welfare. 18) *
துர்
tur (p. 249) s. A prefix used in combination signifying evil, ill, bad, deficient; it is often changed to ற், before the hard letters, to ன் before the soft, as துன்மார்க்கம். Before இடையினம், there is no change. Sometimes ர் is dropped and the relative letter takes its place--as துச்சரிதம், ஒருபசர்க் கை. (See துஷ்.) W. p. 414. DUR. துரதிஷ்டம், s. Ill luck. (c.) துராசாரம், s. Wickedness, depravity, perversity, a vicious life, தீயொழுக்கம். 2. Indecorum, indecency, immodesty, அவ மரியாதை. துராசாரன்--துராசாரி, s. One who violates the rules of his religion, caste. country, &c., a vicious person of vile character. துராசை, s. Evil desires, lust, covetousness, &c. துராத்துமா, s. An evil person, a retch, rescal, scoundrel, villain, தீயன். துராலோசனை, s. Bad counsel, prejudicial or evil advice. துரிச்சை, s. Evil desire. See இச்சை. துர்க்கதி, s. A wicked life, bad course, கெட்டநடை. 2. (also துர்கதி.) Hell, நரகம். துர்க்கந்தம், s. (also துற்கந்தம்.) Offensive smell, stink, கெட்டநாற்றம். துர்க்கருமம்-துர்க்கன்மம்-துஷ்கருமம், s. Evil actions either in performance, or as accumulated and attaching to the soul. துர்க்கன்மபரிபாகம்--துஷ்கன்மபரிபா கம், s. Ripening or exhaustion of the evil actions of former births. துர்க்கீர்த்தி, s. Ill fame, infamy. துர்க்குணம், s. (also துற்குணம்.) Bad disposition, ill humor, a vicious course, தீக்குணம். துர்க்குணன், s. A vicious, wicked man, தீயன். துர்க்குறி, s. Evil omen, bad sign, unfavorable symptom, ominous gesture. துர்ச்சரிதம், s. (more properly, துச்சரி தம்.) Evil practice, evil courses. துர்ச்சனம், s. Badness, viciousness, maliciousness, mischief, வன்மம். 2. Lewdness, lasciviousness, wantonness, மோக லீலை. 3. Insubordination, refractoriness, rebellion of a youth or dependant, &c., செருக்கு. துர்ச்சனநடத்தை--துர்ச்சனவியோகம், s. Vicious conduct, a vicious course. துர்ச்சனன், s. A petulant or insolent man. துர்ச்சனனைக்கண்டால்தூரவிலகு...... Abstain from an insolent person. துர்ச்செய்கை, s. Evil action. துர்ச்சொப்பனம், s. (also துச்சொப்ப னம்.] A bad or ominous dream. துர்த்தேவதை, s. A malignant demon. துர்ப்பலம், s. Weakness, feebleness, thinness, emaciation, பலவீனம். 2. (fig.) The state of being reduced in circumstances, சிறுமை. முன்னமேதுர்ப்பலைஅதிலுங்கர்ப்பிணி. Before weak, and now also pregnant; or poor, and under a heavy fine. துர்ப்பலன், s. Ill result as predicted in astrology. அமங்கலப்பயன். 2. Bad fruit, ill consequence. துர்ப்பாக்கியம்--தௌர்ப்பாக்கியம், s. Evil, calamity, ill-luck, misery, நிர்ப்பாக் கியம். துர்ப்பிட்சம்--துர்ப்பிக்ஷம், s. Famine, பஞ்சம். See பிட்சம். துர்ப்பீசம், s. An illegitimate child, வம்புப்பிள்ளை. See பீசம். துர்ப்புத்தி, s. Folly, presumption, foolhardiness infatuation, wickedness, evil propensity; கெடுமதி. 2. Ill-advice, bad counsel, துராலோசனை. துர்ப்போதனை, s. Bad instruction, illadvice, கெட்டஉபதேசம். துர்மனம், s. An evil mind. துர்மார்க்கம், s. com. துன்மார்க்கம்.) An evil life. துர்மாமிசம், s. (also துன்மாமிசம்.) Proud flesh in a wound, &c. 6) *
பிரளயம்
piraḷayam (p. 317) --பிரளையம், s. Destruction; an overflowing, inundation, வெள் ளம். 2. The end of a kalpa, கற்பமுடிவு. W. p. 578. P'RALAYA. 3. A number, ஓரெண். 4. One of the divisions of an army, படையிலொருதொகை.-- Of பிரளயம் are four kinds, அக்கினிப்பிரளயம், சலப்பிரளயம், மகா ப்பிரளயம், மனுப்பிரளயம், which see; also பிர மப்பிரளயம், பிராகிருதப்பிரளயம், &c. பிரளயகாலம், s. The time of the general destruction of the universe, உலக முடிவு. பிரளயகாலருத்திரன், s. Rudra as destroyer of the world at the deluge. See காலாக்கினிஉருத்திரர். பிரளயாகலர், s. [pl.] The second class of souls subject to two of the three மலம், that is, to ஆணவம் and கன்மம், but free from மாயை and not subject to births, having by their merit risen to the rank of gods, மாயைநீத்தோர். (தத்துவக்.) பிரளயாக்கினி, s. [com. காலாக்கினி.] The submarine fire which is to destroy the universe, வடவாமுகம். 20)
