āṉ (p. 44) s. A neat, cow or bull, பசுப் பொது. 2. A cow, பெண்பசு. 3. The she of the buffalo, or elk, பெண்மரை; [ex ஆ, cow, te ன், termination.] (p.) இ Sanscrit words beginning with ய, ர, ல--as யந்திரம், இயந்திரம், machine--ராகம், இராகம் harmony, melody--லங்கை, இலங்கை, Lanka. (p.) இக்கணம், s. Now, immediately, this moment. இக்குறி, s. [prov.] This time, this once, இம்முறை. 2. This mark, இவ்வடை யாளம். இக்குறிகேட்போன், s. One who has learnt once, now. இக்கூறு, s. ikl (p. 45) --இகலு, கிறேன், இகன்றேன், வேன், இகல, v. a. To hate, oppose, to be inimical to, பகைக்க. 2. To oppose in war, to fight, பொர. 3. To vie with, be rival to, compete with, எதிர்க்க. 4. To dispute, contend, வாக்குவாதஞ்செய்ய. Note.--The infinitive and some other parts of this verb are used as particles of comparison--as குலியமோடிகலியவங்கை, hands resembling vermilion. வரையிகலவளர்தோள். Shoulders grown so large as to vie with mountains. இரண்டுகுருவிகளிகலிப்பாடுகின்றன. Two birds are vieing with each other in song. 8)

iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. The betel creeper recently planted, வெற்றிலையிளங்கொடி. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. இளங்குரல், s. A low, suppressed cry--as at the commencement of a funeral wail, அமர்ந்தகுரல். 2. A shrill, fine voice, சிறுகுரல். (c.) 3. (p.) A young ear of corn, பயிரிளங்கதிர். இளங்கொடி, s. A young creeper, சிறுகொடி. 2. The secundine or afterbirth of a beast, பசுவினஞ்சுக்கொடி. 3. (fig.) [in poetry.] A female, பெண். இளங்கொற்றி, s. A cow that has recently calved, இளங்கன்றுடைப்பசு. இளசு, appel. noun. [prop. இளைசு.] That which is young, tender. இளஞ்சந்திரன்--இளம்பிறை, s. The horned moon, the crescent. இளஞ்சாயம்--இளநிறம், s. A slight tinge in dyeing, நன்றாய்ப்பற்றாதசாயம். இளஞ்சார்வு, s. [prov.] Palmyra or talipot leaves next to the tender shoot, or heart of the tree, குருத்தோலை. இளஞ்சிவப்பு, s. Light red. இளஞ்சூடு, s. Gentle heat, warmness. இளஞ்சூல், s. Young ears of corn not yet shot forth, பயிரினிளங்கரு. 2. An embryo, முதிராப்பிண்டம். இளநாக்கடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To affect reluctance. இளநீர், s. [vul. prop. இளைப்பம்.] Inferiority, baseness, meanness, disgracefulness, flimsiness, திடமின்மை. சாதியிளப்பம், s. Inferiority, lowness of caste. இளமட்டம், s. A small pony, குறுங்குதிரை. 2. A light shower of rain, drizzling rain. இளமையோன், s. A youth, a young man. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A very young man--as மழவன். இளமைவழிபாடு--இளவழிபாடு, s. Fickleness, unsteadiness. 2. Elements, rudiments. இளம்பசி, s. Slight hunger--as between meals, easily relieved by light food, or fruit. இளம்பச்சை, s. Light green. இளம்பதம், s. The quality of paddy, &c., imperfectly or moderately dried after boiling, நெல்முதலியவற்றின்காய்ச்சற்கு றைவு. 7. The state of being slightly parched, toasted, &c., வறுபடாப்பொரி. இளம்பயிர், s. Young shoots of corn, corn in a fit state to be transplanted. இளம்பருவம்--இளம்பிராயம், s. Juvenility, youth, early stage of existence. இளம்பறியல், s. That which is plucked when immature--said of cocoanuts. இளம்பாடு, s. Sufferings of nonage, இளமையிற்படும்பாடு. 2. Immaturity, unripeness, imperfection, இளம்பதம். இளம்பிடி, s. ukam (p. 58) s. Any one of the four Yugas, an age of the world. (See யுகம்.) 2. (p.) End, முடிவு. 3. A pair, a couple, இரண்டு. உகமுடிந்தாற்போலேபேசுகிறாய். Thou speakest as if the world were at an end. உகசந்தி, s. The meeting of two Yugas--the end of the preceding and beginning of the following. ஈன்றவணிமை, s. The time immediately after calving--spoken of a cow. 2. The tenderness, delicacy, &c. of a new-born animal, கன்றினிளமை. 3. The tenderness, weakness, &c. of an animal that has recently brought forth young, இளங்கொற்றியின்பச்சுடம்பு. ஈன்றவள்--ஈன்றாள், s. A mother, தாய். 2. Parvati--as the genetrix of the worlds, பார்வதி. (p.) ஈன்றவன்--ஈன்றான், s. A father, genetor, generator, பிதா. 2. The god Brahma--as creator, பிர்மன். (p.) ஈனல், s. An ear of corn, கதிர். (p.) 2. v. noun. Yeaning, bringing forth, ஈனுகை. ஈன்றல். A verbal in the past form of ஈனுதல. (p.) இன்சொல்லினிதீன்றல். Courteous speech yields pleasure. (குறள்.) ஈற்று, v. noun. Bringing forth, ஈனுகை. 2. s. That which is brought forth, whether animal or vegetable, ஈனப் பட்டது. தலையீற்று--முதலீற்று, s. The first calving; also the first calf, the firstling. ஓரீற்றா, s. A cow that has calved but once. 46)

uku (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To spill, sprinkle, pour down, சிந்த. 2. To discharge, pour out, விட. 3. To shed, cause to fall, drop, உதிர்க்க. (p.) கன்றுகுணிலாக்கனியுகுத்தமாமாயன். The mighty Vishnu who beat off wood-apples (from the tree) with a calf, using it as a cudgel. கண்ணீருகுத்தான். He shed tears. 8)

upayam (p. 62) s. Two, both, double, (doubt), இரண்டு. Wils. p. 161. UB'HAYA. 2. Any thing offered or devoted to religious purposes, given to religious mendicants, கோயிற்காணிக்கை. 3. A present, a gift, உபகாரம். உபயகுலம், s. Two castes, two tribes, one born of two castes. உபயகுலசுத்தம், s. Purity in both the ancestral lines. உபயகோமுகி, s. A cow in the act of calving, the donation of which to a Brahman, when the moon is south of the equator, is regarded as very meritorious (lit.) two-faced, or looking both ways, கன்றின்றலையுதயமாய்நிற்கும்பசு. உபயாத்தம்--உபயார்த்தம், s. Double meaning, ambiguity in words or language, இருபொருள். Wils. p. 162. UBHAYARTHAM. உபயமாதம், s. [in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. An imitative, reiterated sound--as மடமடெனக்குடிக்கி றான், he drinks with a gurgling sound. 20) *

uṟ (p. 67) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To seize--as by the throat, to pinch, press hard, press matter from a boil, &c., பிதுக்க. 2. To press out pulp, juice, &c., press out wholly, பிழிய. 3. To milk thoroughly, drain off, கறக்க. 4. [prov.] To strain to the last farthing, முற்றுங்கவர. 5. To nip, to pinch off, கிள்ளியெடுக்க. உறக்குந்துணையதோராலம்வித்து. The seed of the banian tree so small as to be nipped with the finger and thumb. உறந்துகுத்து. Press the pimple. உறந்துபிழி. Press it all out. காய்ச்சலவனிரத்தமெல்லாமுறந்துபோட்டது. ūṭṭu (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊட்டினேன், வே ன், ஊட்ட, v. a. To put into the mouth-as of children, sick people, &c., உண்பிக்க. 2. To deal out food--as a wife to her husband, &c., to impart, cherish, உணவுகொடுக்க. 3. To entertain a guest, &c., விருந்திட. 4. To saturate, infuse, steep, impregnate, tincture, புகைமுதலியவூட்ட. 5. To cause to experience joys and sufferings--as the fruits of action, இன்பதுன்பங்களையருத்த. 6. (fig.) To instil--as knowledge, &c., நினைப்பூட்ட. (p.) 7. v. n. To suck--as the young of beasts, கன்றூட்ட. அவரைவைத்துக்கொண்டூட்டுகிறார்கள். They entertain him with great attention--an expression of envy. இரண்டாட்டிலூட்டினகுட்டியானான். He is like a kid that sucks two she-goats; i. e. he gets nothing by serving two masters. கன்றூட்டுகிறது. The calf sucks. ஊட்டக்கொடுக்க, inf. To let the calf suck (the act of the cow). ஊட்டவிட, inf. To lead the calf to the cow to suck. ஊட்டுந்தாய், s. a foster-mother, செவிலி. See தாய். பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To reanimate, restore to life. 2. To furnish means of sustenance. இந்தவைத்தியன்போகுமுயிரைப்பிழைப்பூட்டினான். The doctor has restored him to life. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To remind, to put in mind. நினைப்பூட்டி, s. A monument. ஊட்டு, v. noun. Feeding, உண் பிக்கை. 2. s. A morsel, or portion given to a child, a sick person, &c., கவளம். ஊட்டுக்கன்று, s. A sucking calf. ஊட்டுமறந்தகன்று, s. A weaned calf. ஊட்டுணை, s. Shaking of the head caused by old age, தலையாட்டம். (Rott.) *ஊணம், s. The country of the Huns or barbarians, ஓர்தேயம். Wils. p. 977. HOONA. ஊணர், s. eccm (p. 73) s. Deficiency, defect, lack, குறைபாடு. 2. Remainder, remnant, சேஷம். 3. Orts, remains of food, whatever has come in contact with the mouth. spittle, &c., being deemed defiled, எச்சில். 4. Posterity, offspring, சந்ததி. 5. The dung of birds, fowls, wall-lizards, &c., பறவைமுதலி யவற்றின்மலம். 6. An elliptical, or unfinished word, sentence, பெயரெச்சமுதலியன; [ex எஞ்சு.] (p.) எச்சத்தாற்காணப்படும். (Their deeds) will be manifest in their posterity; i. e. in the prosperity, or adversity of their offspring. எச்சமிட, inf. To discharge excrement--as birds, &c., பறவைமலம்விசர்ச் சிக்க. பகையெச்சம். s. Suppressed anger. தீயெச்சம், s. The remainder of fire--as, வினைபகையென்றிரண்டினெச்சம், நினை யுங்காற்றீயெச்சம்போலத்தெறும், (Warlike) deeds which are not pushed to extremity (in the destruction of a foe) and hatred which is not executed but suppressed, will destroy like fire unextinguished. (குறள்.) நோயெச்சம், s. A reduced disease, the remains of a disease. ஈரெச்சம், s. In Grammar, the two classes of unfinished words. I. பெயரெச் சம் or participles, lit. words which require nouns to complete them. These embrace two classes, viz.: (1.) தெரிநிலை ப்பெயரெச்சம், or the participle of the common verb--as, வந்தமகன், the man who came; வருகின்றமகன், the man who comes; வரும்பிள்ளை, the child that will come. (2.) குறிப்புப்பெயரெச்சம் or பெயரெச்சக்குறிப்பு, the participle of the symbolic verb, which always ends in அ and often has the force of an adjective--as கரியகுதிரை, a black horse; கடுங்கண்ணகுதிரை, a fierceeyed horse, or a fierce horse; பொன்னகு திரை. a gold-like horse; அமர்முகத்தகுதிரை, a horse in the front of a battle; மூவிலைய வேல், a three-forked dart, a trident. II. வினையெச்சம், unfinished verbs, or such forms of the verb as require other terminate verbs, &c., to complete the sense. (1.) தெரிநிலைவினையெச்சம். In the past, it is called by Beschi, a gerund; there are five varieties; i. e. (1.) செய்து, பண்ணி, நிறீஇ for நிறுவி or நிறுத்தி; வளைஇ for வளைந்து or வளைத்து; இரீஇ for இருந்து or இருத்தி; கூய் for கூவி. (2.) செய்பு. (3.) செய்யா. (4.) செய்யூ. (5.) செய்தென--Notes. The first is the most common, and the only kind found in colloquial use. 2. The present, or infinitive, செய or செய்ய. 3. The future comprising six varieties. 1. செயின், செய்யின், செயில், செய்யில், செய்கில், these are all future subjunctive forms. 2. செய்யிய. 3. செய்யியர். 4. செய்வான். 5. செய்பாக்கு. 6. உண்பான், this termination occurs after a nasal only. The last five are equivalent to the infinitive, &c., they may be rendered by that with the potential of the verb, as given in நன்னூல். A few may be added: 1. செய் தால், the common subjunctive of the past, but often used for the future. 2. செய்தக்கால். 3. செய்தக்கடை, past or future subjunctives. 4. செய்தலும், காண்டலும். 5. செய்தலோடும், implying when, or as soon as. 6. ஏல், a contraction of எனில், is, in poetry, added to any finite verb to form the subjunctive--as உண்ணுமேல், உண்ணுமெனில். 2. வினையெச்சக்குறிப்பு or குறிப்புவினையெச்சம், gerund of symbolic verbs; of these there are but two, இன்றி and அன்றி from இல் and அல், these symbolic verbs being redundant. சொல்லெச் சம், elliptical, or incomplete words, or classes, ten in number. 1. பெயரெச்சம், participles as given above. 2. வினையெச் சம், unfinished forms of the verb. (See above.) 3. உம்மையெச்சம், a sentence in which a second உம் and its adjunct are understood--as, சாத்தனும்வந்தான், Sattan also is come, implying that others are come or expected. 4. சொல்லெச்சம், a clause in which சொல்லல் is understood --as, என்றார் for என்றுசொன்னார். 5. பிரிநிலை யெச்சம், a clause in which an exception of persons, or things is implied, see ஏ and ஓ--as, அவனேகொண்டான், he bought it, implying that others did not. 6. எனவெனெச்சம், a clause in which a verb, or a noun is required after என--as, கடலொல்லெனவொலித்தது, the sea roared with the sound of ஒல். 7. ஒழியிசையெச்சம், a clause in which a counterpart is understood--as உண்ணுதற்கோவந்தான், was it to eat that he came (implying that his object was otherwise)? 8. எதிர்மறை யெச்சம், the ellipsis of a negative, or denial--as அவனோகொண்டான், Was it he that bought it (implying a negative answer). 9. இசையெச்சம், ellipsis generally comprising two or more words, such as are not found in the above--as நின்னையா னகன்றாற்றுவனோ, Can I endure separation from you (indicating an affectionate attachment to the party addressed)? 1. குறிப்பெச்சம், symbolic terms, contractions, abbreviations, &c., comprising several kinds. (See குறிப்பு.) There is another form called முற்றெச்சம், a finite verb used in the place of a gerund--as உண்டான்வந்தான் for உண்டுவந்தான், eating he came. எச்சமிட, inf. To befoul, to soil with dung--spoken of birds. எச்சவனுமானம், s. Inference of a past cause from a present effect. See அநுமானம். எச்சவாய், s. [vul.] The sphincter of the anus, the podex, குதம். அட்டவெச்சம், s. The eight defects in the human body; i. e. 1. சிதடு or குருடு, blindness. 2. ஊமை, dumbness. 3. செவிடு, deafness. 4. கூன், crookedness of the back. 5. குறள், dwarfness. 6. முடம், lameness. (சது.) (in பிங்கலந்தை and திவாகரம், யகண், மா, hermaphroditism). 7. உறுப்புமயக்கம், a monstrous birth either by redundancy, defect, or misplacing of the members, &c. 8. உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், a shapeless production, or a birth with the features not properly developed. 23)

erumai (p. 73) s. A buffalo, especially the female, காரான். எருமைப்பால்குடித்தவன். One who has drunk buffalo's milk, a blockhead, மந்தன். எருமைக்கடா, s. A he-buffalo, பகடு. எருமைக்கடாத்தானம், s. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2.
