[in grammar.] One of the eleven subjects treated of in the introduction of a book, கற் போன். (See பாயிரம்.) 2. [in philosophy, literature, &c.] The persons, for whom a work is written, as it regards competency, eligibility, worthiness, &c., as the ஞானநூல் for such as act up to the prescribed rules. The persons are three, கருமகாண்டி, பத்திகாண்டி, ஞானகாண்டி, who are the principal, and the following eight who are subordinates, கருமி, முமூட்சு, அப்பியாசி, அனுபவி, ஆரூடன், விவேகி, விரத்தன், தேவகதியன். 54) *

aṉṉam (p. 34) s. Boiled rice, food in general, சோறு. Wils. p. 4. ANNA. அன்னக்களை, s. Faintness through hunger; languor on eating too much food when weak. அன்னக்காவடி, s. Boiled rice carried with ceremony under a canopy, &c. to be presented to the idol. 2. Boiled rice begged from house to house, to be distributed to mendicants. அன்னக்கொடி, s. A flag hoisted on a choultry to give notice that rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னக்கொடை, s. Liberality in giving boiled rice. அன்னசத்திரம்--அன்னசாலை, s. A choultry where boiled rice is distributed gratuitously. அன்னசாரம்--அன்னரசம், s. The essence of food, chyle. Wils. p. 4. ANNARASA. 2. Conjee, rice-gruel, கஞ்சி. அன்னசுத்தி, s. Ghee, நெய். அன்னதாதா--அன்னதாதிரு, s. One who gives food, a charitable person. Wils. p. 4. ANNADATRU. அன்னதானம், s. The giving of boiled rice as alms; [ex தானம்.] Wils. p. 4. ANNADANA. அன்னதானப்பிரபு, s. A very liberal man who gives boiled rice daily, &c. அன்னபானம், s. Food and drink. அன்னபானாதிகள், s. Food, drink, &c. அன்னப்பாகு, s. (Anat.) Chyme. அன்னப்பால், s. The water strained from boiled rice, conjee. அன்னப்பிராசனம், s. The ceremony of feeding a child with rice for the first time--if a boy, on the sixth or any other even month afterwards, as the eighth, tenth, &c.--if a daughter, on any odd month after the sixth. The direction is given in காசிகாண்டம், and is regularly practised by Brahmans, குழ ந்தைக்குமுன்னர்ச்சோறூட்டல். Wils. p. 4. ANNAPRASHANA. அன்னமயகோசம், s. The gross material body, sustained by food--as one of the investitures or supports of any soul, சரீரம். See கோசம். Wils. p. 4. ANNAMAYAKOSHA. அன்னரேகை, s. [in palmistry.] A line on the hand indicating abundance of the means of support to him who has it, கையிரேகையினொன்று. அன்னவஸ்திரம், s. Food and clothing. அன்னவூறல், s. Rice-gruel, or water in which rice has been boiled, கஞ்சி. அன்னாபிடேகம்--அன்னாபிஷேகம், s. Anointing an idol with boiled rice. அன்னாலாத்தி, s. Lamps of boiled rice before an idol, or a new married couple, to dispel the fascination of unlucky eyes. See ஆலாத்தி. 9)

The splendor or glory of kings; it is of four kinds; viz.: 1. கொடை, gifts. 2. தலையளி, condescension. 3. செங்கோல், justice. 4. குடியோம் பல், care of his subjects. அரசர்குணம், s. The three properties of kings; viz.: 1. தூங்காமை, decision. 2. கல்வி, learning. 3. துணிவு, prowess. அரசர்க்குக்குழு, s. The five different officers of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Soothsayers, புரோகிதர், 3. Generals, சேனாபதியர். 4. Messengers, தூதர். 5. Spies, வேயர். அரசர்க்குத்துணைவர், s. The eight assistants of a king; viz.: 1. Ministers, மந்திரியர். 2. Rulers, கருமாதிகாரர். 3. Relations, சுற்றம். 4. Door-keepers, கடை காப்பாளர். 5. Citizens of his capital, நகர மாக்கள். 6. Commanders, படைத்தலைவர். 7. Cavaliers, இவுளிமறவர். 8. Warriors on elephants, யானைவீரர். அரசர்க்குறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The five confidential servants of a king, as, Companions, நட்பர்; Brahmans, அந்தணாளர்; Cooks, மடையர்; Physicians, மருத்துவர், and Prophets, நிமித்திகர். அரசர்சின்னம், s. The twenty-one distinguishing marks of a king. See இராசசின்னம். அரசர்நால்வகையியல்பு, s. The four special qualities of kings; viz.: 1. அஞ்சாமை, fearlessness, fortitude. 2. ஈகை, bountifulness. 3. அறிவு, discernment. 4. ஊக்கம், prowess. அரசர்வல்லமை, s. The four acts or powers of kings; viz.: 1. இயற்றல், making acquisitions. 2. ஈட்டல், collecting his revenues. 3. காத்தல், securing them. 4. வகுத்தல், distributing or expending them. அரசனாணை, s. The order or decree of a king, சாசனம். அரசனுயிர்காத்தோன், s. A unicorn, as the fabled protector of a king, காண்டாமிருகம். அரசன்விருத்தம், s. A kind of poem describing the country and magnificence of the king, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அரசி, s. A queen, இராசஸ்திரீ. 2. A lady, தலைவி. 42)

arukkāṇi (p. 25) s. Rareness, preciousness, nobleness, அருமை. 2. Shifts, reluctance to accommodate, closeness in a bargain, &c., அழுத்தம். (c.) அருக்காணிகாட்ட, inf. To be backward, show unwillingness or reluctance. அருக்காணிபண்ண, inf. To grudge. 3) *

arukku (p. 25) கிறேன், அருக்கினேன், வேன், அருக்க, v. a. To diminish, குறைக்க. 2. To make scarce, reduce in quantity, சுருக்க. 3. v. n. To keep back from others use, (as keeping up grain, making it scarce and dear,) to stand out in bargaining, stickle, haggle, அருக்காணிபண்ண. 4. To grudge, spare reluctantly, give sparingly, show unwillingness to serve or benefit another, அழுக்காறடைய. (திரிகடுகம்.) நீரருக்கிமோர்பெருக்கி நெய்யுருக்கியுண்பவர்தம் பே ருரைக்கப்போமே பிணி. aṟivu (p. 33) s. Knowledge, wisdom, learning, science, erudition, one of the four ஆடூஉக்குணம், ஞானம். 2. Intelligence, intellect, reason, புத்தி. 3. Feeling, perception, comprehension, உணர்வு. 4. The senses as the medium of knowledge or knowledge acquired by them, பொறியுணர்வு. 5. Instruction, advice, போதனை. (c.) அறிவழி, s. Toddy or other inebriating liquor, கள். 2. A devil, பிசா சம்; [ex அழி, to ruin.] (p.) அறிவழிய, inf. To lose one's reason, be bereft or sense, be under a delusion, be infatuated. அறிவறை, s. One destitute of spiritual knowledge. 2. Destitution of spiritual knowledge, delusion, infatuation, illusion; [ex அறை, bereft.] (p.). அறிவறைபோயினர். They became bewildered. அறிவன், s. A wise man, a skilful or learned person, அறிவுடையோன். 2. An artificer, கம்மாளன். 3. The planet Mercury, புதன். 4. The twenty-sixth lunar mansion, உத்திரட்டாதிநாள். 5. The planet Mars, செவ்வாய். 6. God, கடவுள். 7. Argha, அருகன். 8. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 9. Siva, சிவன். (p.) அறிவனாள், s. The twenty-sixth lunar mansion. அறிவாகரன், s. A person of profound erudition; [ex ஆகரம், seat.] (p.) அறிவாளன்--அறிவாளி, s. A wise, skilful or intelligent person. அறிவிலான்--அறிவிலி--அறிவில் லான்--அறிவீனன், s. An ignorant person, one without spiritual knowledge. அறிவில்லாமை--அறிவின்மை--அ றிவீனம், neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறிவுகொடுக்க--அறிவுகொளுத்த, inf. To impart instruction, teach, instruct. 2. To allow a lucid interval, as to a dying person after a season of stupor, delirium, &c. அறிவுகொடுத்துக் கொல்லும். (Death, disease, &c.) will allow a lucid interval and then kill (him.) அறிவுசொல்ல, inf. To communicate instruction, give good advice, exhort. அறிவுடைமை, v. noun. Knowledge, the possession of knowledge. அறிவுணர்த்த--அறிவுபயிற்ற--அறி வுறுத்த, inf. To instruct, communicate instruction. அறிவுதிக்க, inf. To dawn as wisdom. அறிவுபிறக்க, inf. To dawn as knowledge in the mind, to become instructed, enlightened, informed. 2. To be restored as the senses, consciousness, &c. அறிவுப்பயிற்சி, s. Education. அறிவுமயக்கம், s. Loss of consciousness. அறிவுமயங்க, inf. To faint, lose consciousness either by swooning, fits, sleep, or the approach of death, &c. 2. To be surprised. அறிவுள்ளவன், s. A wise or skilful person. 2. A grateful person. அறிவொப்புக்காண்டல், v. noun. Questioning to ascertain if another's views correspond with one's own. (p.). நுண்ணறிவு, s. Minute or exact knowledge. பேரறிவு, s. Perfect knowledge. சிற்றறிவு, s. Imperfect knowledge. 53)
