அடம்பு
aṭmpu (p. 7) s. A running flower plant, including two species, viz., ஆட்டுக்காலடம்பு, and மான்குளம்படம்பு, ஓர்கொடி. அடம்பங்கொடி--அடப்பங்கொடி, s. The above creeper. அடம்பங்கொடியுந்திரண்டால்மிடுக்கு. Even the அடம்பு creeper when several are combined will be strong, i. e. very weak persons, when several are joined together, may be strong. அடம்பம்பூ--அடப்பம்பூ, s. Its flower. 65)

A measure, twelve inches the length of a person's foot, also of a pace, step, ஓர்வகையளவு. 8. The print of a foot-step, foot-print, vestige, காற்சுவடு. 9. The sole of a sandal, shoe, &c., மிதியடியினடி. 1. Vicinity, neighborhood, nearness, proximity, சமீபம். 11. Underside, lower part, கீழ். (பஞ். 24.)-Note. There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. To lay a foundation for any building, அஸ்திவாரம்போட. 2. To take measures, undertake, make preparations, முயற்சிசெய்ய. அடிக்கடி, adv. Frequently, often repeatedly, reiteratedly, பலமுறை. அடிக்குடி, s. Suburbs; ex குடி, village. அடிக்குடில், s. The suburb of a town, 2. A village of the Vedda people. அடிக்குள்ளே. Within a moment, in the same moment, before the next step is taken. அடிச்சால், s. The mark of a stripe, points of a rod, அடிபட்டதழும்பு. அடித்தளம், s. A ground-floor, தள வரிசைபோட்ட நிலம். 2. Lower part or foundation of a well, அடிப்பார். 3. Lower stratum or laying of a pile, அடிவரிசை. 4. The rear of an army, பின்னணி. அடிநா, s. The root or lower part of the tongue, நாவினடி. அடிபணிய, inf. To fall at one's feet, reverence, submit, obey, நமஸ்காரஞ்செய்ய. அடிபிடிக்க, inf. To get a clue to a thing, மூலத்தைப்பற்ற. 2. To pursue, பின்றொடர. 3. To discover one's footstep, காலடையாளம்பார்க்க. அடிபெயர, inf. To start, take a step, move from the spot where one stands, பேர. அடிப்பட, inf. To be in subjection, கீழ்ப்பட. அடிப்படுத்த, inf. To subdue, subject a country, a foe, bring into possession, கீழ்ப்படுத்த. அடிப்படை, s. The chief division of an army. 2. The first layer in a well, &c. அடிப்பட்டகாந்தி, s. one of the thirty-two kinds of prepared arsenic. அடிப்பட்டசாந்தி, s. Great meekness. அடிப்பட்டசான்றோர், s. Ancient sages. அடிப்பதற, inf. To tremble as the feet, கானடுங்க. 2. (fig.) [prov.] To fail in business, lose a situation, wife or property. 3. To be perplexed in consequence of failure, &c. அடிப்பந்தி, s. Head of the table or row of guests. அடிப்பலம், s. The first benefit or advantage received by a person, முதற்பலன். அடிப்பற்ற, inf. To deliberate, think how to act யோசிக்க. 2. To measure time by the shadow, நிழலளந்து பொ ழுதுகுறிக்க. அடிப்பினை, s. Sand mixt with lead, வங்கமணல். அடிப்போட, inf. To begin, undertake, make the first effort, effect an object, தொடங்க. அடிமடக்கு, s. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.
காலம்
kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) The time appointed for death, as distinguished from that for accident death, முடிவு. 6. [in gram.] Tense; also, the characteristic of a tense, வினையின்காலம். The three tenses are, இறந்தகாலம், எதிர்காலம், நிகழ்காலம். 7. [in music.] The three measure--as (1.) விளம் பம், slow. (2.) துரிதம், quick. &c. (3.) மத் திமம், the medium. 8. Epoch, era, யுகம். 9. Weather, காலவியல்பு. காலத்துக்குத்தக்ககோலம். Adapting one's self to the times. காலத்துக்குத்தக்கதாய்நடக்க. inf. To live according to circumstances. காலம்போம்வார்த்தைநிற்கும். Time files, but words remain. காலகதி, s. Events of time, காலநடை. காலகதியை யாவருங் கடக்கமாட்டார்கள். None cane escape the events of time. காலகருமம்--காலகன்மம், s. Employments, duties, &c., appropriate to an age, time, season, stage of life, &c., காலத்துக் குரியசெய்கை. காலக்கிரமம், s. The course of time; chronological order, காலவொழுங்கு. காலக்கிரயம், s. The price of the articles for the time being; current or market price, காலவிலை. காலக்குறி, s. Signs of the time. காலக்கொடுமை, s. The evils, calamities, &c., of time. காலங்கண்டவன், s. An experienced man; an aged person. காலங்கரந்தபெயரெச்சம், s. [in gram.] A relative participle without the characteristics of the tenses--as in கொல் யானை. காலங்கழிக்க, inf. To pass time கா லம்போக்க. காலங்கழிய, inf. To pass--as time, நாட்கழிய. காலங்கூட, inf. [local.] To die. காலசக்கரம், s. The different number of years of influence ascribed to the respective planets as operative on the lives of persons, ஆயுள்நியதிச்சக்கரம். 2. The aggregate of the years of the nine planets according to their respective influence, கிரகபலச்சக்கரம். 3. Period or term of life, ஆயுட்காலம். Wils. p. 216. KALACHAKRA.. அவனுக்குக்காலச்சக்கரமுடிவுவந்துவிட்டது. The end of his term is come. காலசங்கதி, s. Intelligence, news or events of the time or the day. காலசங்கை, s. Guess of time from mere inspection, காலஉத்தேசம். 2. Reckoning of time, காலக்கணக்கு. (p.) காலசந்தி, s. The daily morning worship; also applicable to that at noon and evening. 2. The interval between any two yugas, kalpas, &c. See கற்பம் and சந்தி. திரிகாலசந்தி, s. Worship in the morning, at noon and in the evening. காலசுகம், s. Favorableness of the time, astrologically and superstitiously considered. காலஞ்செல்ல, inf. To depart this life, to die. 2. [prov.] To be late. காலக்ஷயம்--காலட்சயம், s. Passing one's time or days, காலக்கழிவு. காலக்ஷேபம்--காலட்சேபம் s. Passing one's time or days; circumstances, welfare, &c., காலங்கழிக்கை. 2. Means of subsistence, சீவனம். Wils. p. 216. KALAKSHEPA. 3. [among the Vaishnavas.] The reading of the sacred books, திருவாய் மொழியோதல். உமதுகாலட்சேபம் எப்படி. How do you do; i.e. how are your affairs? காலதருமம்--காலதன்மம், s. The events appropriate to certain times or yugas respectively, காலத்தன்்மை. Wils. p. 217. KALAD'HARMMA. காலதாமதம், s. Delay, protraction, procrastination, தாமசம். காலதுரிதம், s. The rapid progress of time, காலத்தின்விரைவு. காலத்திரயம், s. The three divisions of time--as past, present, and future; also the three tenses, முக்காலம். காலநியமம், s. Events happening in their respective and appropriate seasons, according to the actions that gave them birth, காலநியதி. 2. Religious ceremonies according to the given periods of the year or day, காலக்கடன். காலநிரூபணம், s. Chronology. (modern usage.) காலநுட்பம், s. A small portion of time, காலத்தின்நுண்ணியபங்கு. காலநெடுமை--நெடுங்காலம், s. Length of time, a long time. காலநேமி, s. An Asura, ஓர் அசுரன். Wils. p. 217. KALANEMI. காலநேரம், s. Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. In the morning, early, betimes. காலம்பண்ண--காலம்பண்ணிப்போக, inf. To finish one's time, to die. காலம்பார்க்க, inf. To look or watch for a proper time or opportunity, சமயம் பார்க்க. காலம்புரள, inf. To present a manifest revolution--as in the order of things; to be irregular, deranged, &c.--as the events of a time--as toddy-drawers seen riding in palankeens, &c. காலம்போக்க, inf. To pass the times. 2. To while away time. காலவகை, s. Seasons, times, காலக் கூறுபாடு. 2. Circumstances depending on time, காலவேறுபாடு. காலவர்த்தமானம், s. Events of the times. காலவழக்கம், s. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. The time of death. ஆங்கால மெய்வருந்த வேண்டா வதுதானே தேங்காய்க் கிளநீர்போற் சேருமே, போங்காலம் காட்டானை தின்ற கனியதுபோ லாகுமே தேட்டாளன் றேடுந் தனம். Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். At what time soever, always. சாங்காலம், s. The time of death or ruin. திரிகாலம்--முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time, present, past, and future. 2.The three tenses of a verb. திரிசந்திகாலம். A channel, வாய்க் கால். 14. An instrument of dry measure --as மரக்கால். 15. Way, road, path, வழி. 16. A place, room, இடம். 17. Time, காலம் --as in கணுங்கால். 18. [prov.] A measure in the width of cloth, being two குஞ்சம் or two-hundred-and-forty threads of warp, புடைவை அகலத்தின்கால். காலடி, s. The sole of the foot, உள் ளங்கால். 2. The steps or trace of the foot, foot-steps, காற்சுவடு. காலடியிலே, At or near the foot. காலணி, s. Ankle-ornaments, anklerings or bells, காலிலணியுமாபரணம். காலதர், s. (p.) A window, பலகணி; [ex கால், wind, et அதர், way.] காலாட, inf. To be active and industrious, முயல. காலாடி, s. An active, industries man, one who is active in movements, affairs, &c., முயற்சியுடையோன். 2. Wanderer, திரி வோன். 3. Title given to the chief of the Paller caste, பள்ளர்தலைவன். காலாட்டம், s. Activity in business, in duty, and consequent properity, மு யற்சி. காலாட்டமுள்ளமாடு, s. An ox that is brisk and ploughs well. காலாணி, s. A corn on the foot. 2. Pegs in the beams of native houses to support the roof. காலாணியற்றுப்போனவன், s. One who is become weak or poor. காலாயுதம், s. A gallinacious fowl, whose foot is its weapon, கோழி. காலாழி, s. See under ஆழி. காலாள், s. A person on foot; footsoldiers, infantry, பதாதி. காலாற, inf. To rest the foot, நடை யோய்ந்திருக்க. காலாறவிட, inf. To let draught oxen, horses, &c., rest. காலிடற--கால்தடக்க--காறடக்க, inf. To stumble. காலிலி, s. A snake, பாம்பு. 2. Wind, காற்று. 3. The charioteer of the sun, அருணன்; [ex கால், leg, இல், not without legs.] காலில்விழ, inf. To fall prostrate, or do homage at one's feet. காலுழற்சிகையுழற்சி. Distortion of the limbs, by convulsion or otherwise. காலிறால், s. See under இறால். காலுளைவு, v. noun. Soreness, aching or pain in the legs, from cold, walking, &c. காலூன்ற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. The prime minister. மகாமாயி--மகாமாரி, s. [com. மகமாயி.] A name of Durga, துர்க்கை. மகாமாயை, s. Mother of the king of the Asuras, சூரபன்மன்தாய். 2. As மாமாயை. மகாமிருகம், s. The elephant, யானை. மகாமுத்திரை, s. One of the symbols of the Yoga system, யோகமுத்திரை. மகாமுனி--மகாரிஷி, s. A great Muni. 2. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். மகாமேரு--மகமேரு, s. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. A charioteer commanding 11, chariots; any warrior of note, 11,--ந்தேருக்குத்தலைவன். மகாராசன்--மகாராசா, s. A great king, a monarch. W.p. 651. MAHARAJA. 2. An epithet of Kuvera. 3. One who possesses elephants, யானைகட்டிவாழ்பவன். மகாராட்டிரம், s. [Tamil மராடம்.] The original Maharatta country. See தேசம். 2. The Maharatta language. See பாஷை. மகாலட்சுமி, s. The great Lukshmi, goddess of felicity. மகாலயம், s. The world of Brahma, பிரமனுலகம். 2. A temple, கோயில். மகாலுத்தன்--மகாலோபி, s. A very great niggard. மகாலோகம்--மகலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds. See மேலுலகு. மகாவராகம், s. Vishnu in the hogincarnation, விஷ்ணு. மகாவற்புதம், s. A large number, ஓர் பேரெண்; [ex அற்புதம்.] மகாவாக்கியம், s. A mystic word in the Vedanta, a religious formule among the Saivas and others. மகாவிசுவம்--மகாவிஷீவம்--மகாவிடு வம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. A number probably one thousand billions, ஓரெண். 2. A certain city, நளனுடையநகரம். 3. A residence of Vishnu, வைகுந்தம். மகாவிந்து, s. Mica or talc, as அப் பிரகம். மகாவிரதம்--மாவிரதம், s. One of the six approved or orthodox sects of the Saiva religion, சைவசமயத்தொன்று. மகாவிரதர், s. [sing. மகாவிரதி.] Professors of the above sect, சைவர்கள். மகாவெள்ளம், s. A great flood. 2. (fig.) A great number, ஓரெண். மகேசன்--மகேசுரன்--மகேசுவரன்-மகேச்சுரன்--மகேச்சுவரன், s. Siva--as Mahasuran, or obscurer of souls. See பஞ்ச கர்த்தாக்கள். His consort is called மகேசு வரி. மகேந்திரசாலம், s. Astonishing supernatural appearances by magic. See கலை ஞானம், சாலம். மகேந்திரம், s. A range of mountains. See சத்தகுலாசலம். W. p. 658. MAHENDRA. 2. A mountain, மலை. 3. [in mythol. also மகேந்திரபுரி.] A famous town said to have been inhabited by the Asuras but afterwards submerged in the southern ocean, ஓர்நகரம். மகேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். மகைசுவரியம், s. [also மகதைசுவரியம்.] Great opulence. மகோததி, s. The ocean, the great sea, கடல்; [ex உததி, sea.] 2. [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம். Compare அத்தோதயம். மகோதரம், s. Dropsy of the belly, ascites, ஓர்நோய். 2. A large belly, பெரு வயிறு; [ex உதரம், belly.] மகோதரன், s. [in mythol.] The minister of Ravana; (lit.) the big bellied, இராவ ணன்மந்திரி. மகோபநிஷதம், s. One of the Upanishads. See உபநிடதம். மகோற்சவம், s. A great festival. மகோன்னதபலசாலிகள், s. To strike the knees together. முட்டிச்சண்டை--முட்டியுத்தம், s. Boxing, pugilism, கைக்குத்துச்சண்டை. முட்டியெடுத்தல், v. noun. Begging, asking alms. தும்முட்டி, s. A plant. mel (p. 363) adj. Soft. மெல்ல, adv. [com. மெள்ள.] Slowly, gently. மெல்லணை, s. A soft pillow, or bed, மெத்தை. (p.) மெல்லன், appel. n. The chief of a brackish soil, or of a district near the sea, நெய்தனிலத்தலைவன். மெல்லி, s. A woman, பெண். (p.) மெல்லிக்கை, s. Thinness, ஒஞ்சட்டை. மெல்லிது--மெல்லியது, appel. n. [com. மெல்லிசு.] That which is soft. மெல்லிதாய்நூற்கிறது......Spinning fine threads. மெல்லியநல்லாள், s. A gentlewoman, பெருமாட்டி. (p.) மெல்லியர்--மெல்லியார்--மெல்லிய லார், s. The weak, the emaciated, the delicate, மெலிந்தவர். 2. Women, பெண்கள். மெல்லியல், s. A female, பெண். [pl. மெல்லியலார்.] 2.A tender twig of a tree, இளங்கொம்பு. (சது.) மெல்லியவாழை, s. The soft plantaintree. மெல்லியாள், s. A woman, பெண். (p.) மெல்லியாடோள்சேர். Live with thine own wife. (Avv.) மெல்லினம், s. The class of soft, or nasal consonants, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன். மெல்லினவெதுகை, s. One of the இன வெதுகை, in which the second letter of each line is any of the soft consonants. மெல்லெழுத்து, s. A soft or liquid consonant. மெல்லென, inf. To be soft, gentle; used adverbially. மெல்லெனப்பாயுந் தண்ணீர்கல்லையுங்குழியப்பா யும். The water which flows gently will excavate a stone. மென்கணம், s. The soft letters, as மெல்லினம். (p.) மென்சொல், s. A soft or kind word. மென்பால், s. Fertile and cultivated ground; [ex பால், place.] மென்மை, s. Fineness, softness, thinness. See ஊறு. 2. (p.) As மெல்லினம். மென்மையார், s. [pl.] Women, as மெல் லியர். மென்னடை, s. A swan, as a bird of graceful walk, அன்னம். 2. A gentle, slow walk, அன்னநடை. மென்னிலை, s. A mode of using the hands in dancing.
