To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (p.) 6. v. n. To become scarce and dear, to fail or be scanty--as crops, rain, &c., to be sparing, குறைய. கொலையிற்கொடியாரைவேந்தொறுத்தல். Punishing the guilty by death--the prerogative of a prince. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Restraint of the passions, self-mortification, self-denial, உட ல்வருத்துகை. 3. Chastisement, punishment, correction, தண்டிப்பு. 4. Rebuke, reproof, கடிவு. 5. Dislike, disgust, வெறு ப்பு. 6. oḷ (p. 84) adj. Good, excellent, நல்ல. 2. Beautiful, அழகுள்ள. 3. Bright, glittering, luminous, பிரகாசமான. 4. Knowing, அறிவுள்ள. 5. Abundant, மிகுதியான. The ள் of this word is changed into ட் and ண் before appropriate letters, whence the nouns ஒட்பம், and ஒண்மை. ஒள்ளழல்கண்ணிற்கால. His eyes emitting bright sparks of fire through rage-ஒள்வாள், s. Glittering swords, ஒள்ளியவாள். ஒள்ளியர், s. The virtuous, those renowned for subjecting their passions and practising deeds of virtue, according to the shasters, மாசற்றவர். 2. The wise, the intelligent, அறிவுடையோர். (p.) ஒளியார்முன்னொள்ளியராதல். Acting wisely in the presence of the wise. (குறள்.) ஒள்ளியோன், s. He who emits light, ஒளிசெய்வோன். 2. Venus the planet, சுக்கிரன். 3. An enlightened man, அறிவுடையோன். (p.) ஒள்ளொளி, s. A brilliant light. 21)

kṭi (p. 87) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To bite, bite off, crop, gnaw, nibble, grasp with, or hold in the mouth, to champ, பல்லாற்கறிக்க. 2. To hurt, pinch, gall --as new shoes, a new ring, &c., செருப்புமு தலியகாலையழுத்த. காதையிந்தக்கடுக்கன்மிகக்கடிக்கிறது. This earring pinches my ear very much. காலைச்செருப்புக்கடித்துப்போட்டது. The sandal has galled my foot. கையைக்கடியாமலிருக்கப்பார்க்கிறார். He takes care that the expense shall not fall on himself. சற்றுப்பல்லைக்கடித்துக்கொண்டிரு. Be patient, hold still a little, lit. bite your teeth and be still. ஒருமனிதனைக்கடித்துப்பிடுங்கலாமோ. Should one fall foul on a person and compel him? முயிறுகடித்துப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டது. The red ant is biting me, has laid fast hold of me. கடிநாய், s. A vicious, snappish dog, கடிக்கிறநாய். 2. (fig.) A surly person, a cynic, துஷ்டன். கடிப்பான், s. Condiment, a sauce, கறி. கடிவாளம், s. A bridle, கலினம். கடிவாளம்போடுதல்--கடிவாளம்மா ட்டுதல், v. noun. Bridling a horse. கடிவாளம்வாங்க--கடிவாளங்கழற்ற, inf. To unbridle. கடிவாளம்வெட்டுதல், v. noun. Slackening and pulling in the reins. கடிவாளவார், s. Reins of a bridle. கடி, v. noun. Biting, கடிக்கை. 2. A bite, கடித்தவடு. கடிபிடி, v. noun. [vul.] Scuffle, snarling, biting, &c. கடிவாய், s. The lips of a wound occasioned by a bite. கடிவாய்வடு, s. The scar remaining after a wound caused by a bite, a cicatrice. காணாக்கடி, s. The bite of an insect, &c., concealed. பொய்க்கடி, s. A bite which does not hurt--as that of a dog in play. 48)

kiṇṭu (p. 109) கிறேன், கிண்டினேன், வேன்,கிண் ட, v. a. To dig, excavate, delve, hoe up, தோண்ட. 2. To make a pit, a hollow--as in the ground, a hole in a wall, &c., குழிதோ ண்ட. 3. To dig up; to dig out; to obtain by digging, கிளறியெடுக்க. 4. To poke, stir with a ladle; to scratch--as a fowl; pick or work up--as crows; burrow--as rats, &c.; to work up with a stick, an iron-bar, &c., கிளற. 5. (fig.) to probe, to scrutinize, to investigate, to inquire or pry into a matter; to search, to examine, ஆராய. 6. To gnaw--as worms on the body, as animalcula under the skin, &c., புழுமுதலியனகிண்ட. 7. To prompt, நினைப்பூட்ட. 8. To excite--as to a quarrel, &c., பகையெழுப்ப. கிண்டக்கிண்டக்கீரையும்மயிரும், The more you probe it, the more it is hair with the greens; i.e. the more insignificant. மண்கிண்டிவயிறுவளர்க்கிறவன். A husbandman, (diminutively) one who lives by digging. அம்பட்டன்குப்பையைக் கிண்டினால்மயிர்மயிராய்ப் புறப்படும். If you turn up the dung-hill of a barber, you will find only clippings of hair. கிண்டிக்கிண்டிக்கேட்க--விசேஷங்கிண் ட, inf. To inquire into a thing very minutely, to pump one, to ask inquisitively. கிண்டிக்கிளறிப்பார்க்க, inf. To dig out and search. 2. To make a thorough search, to make a thorough investigation. கிண்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To stir, to keep stirring--as the fire, the pap, &c. 2. (fig. To prompt. 3. To increase, to aggravate--as a quarrel. நீயவனைச்சற்றேகிண்டிக்கொடு. Prompt him a little. கிண்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To dig and look --as for yams, &c., 2. fig.) To make injuiry by different means to find out the truth. அவனண்டைபோய்ச் செய்திஎன்னவென்றுகிண் டிப்பார். Go to him and search out the matter. கிண்டிவிட, inf. To dig up, to dig round the roots of plants, grain &c. 2. To excite, to stir up, to incite. 3. To bring a thing to one's notice, to suggest. கிண்டிவிட்டுக் கேளிக்கைப்பார்க்கிறது..... To stir up or excite others to quarrel or fight, and delight in it. கல்லுக்கிண்ட, inf. To dig up stones. களிக்கிண்ட, inf. To cook hasty-pudding, by stirring. கிழங்குகிண்ட, inf. To dig up கிழங்கு. புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To burrow--as worms in the ground, working up plants, &c. 2. To stir or irritate--as worms in a sore, &c. கிண்டல்கிளறல், v. noun. Digging yams, &c. 48)

cṟṟu (p. 173) adv. and adj. [either a change of the Sa. Svalpa, or of சிற்று, from சிறு.] A little, somewhat, அற்பம். 2. A little time, சிறிதுநேரம். (c.) சற்றப்புறம். A little further, a little beyond. சற்றாகிலும்--சற்றேனும்--சற்றும். Ever so little, even a little; a mere trifle. சற்றுநேரம்--சற்றுவேளை. A little time. சற்றுங்கொடான். He will give nothing. சற்றுப்பாடும். Sing a little. சற்றுமில்லை. Not in the least, none at all. சற்றும்பொறான். He will not wait a moment. 2. He will not bear it in the least. சற்றுமுன்னே. cāratam (p. 178) s. Melodiousness, good modulation of voice in singing, இனியவோ சை. Sa. Sárasa. 2. (also சாரதப்பாட்டு.) A kind of ode to be sung to melodious tune and rhythmetical metre, ஓர்வகைக்கவி--as சயசாரதம். கமலமலர்ப்பாதா. O! thou lotus-footed. உளஞ்சற்றிரங்காதா. Is not mercy to thee sweet? அருள்செயலாகாதா. tṭu (p. 222) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To hinder, to stop, to prohibit, to interrupt, தடைசெய்ய. 2. To ward off, to avert, to prevent, விலக்க. 3. To check, to baffle, to rebuff, தட்ட. 4. To curb, to limit, to restrain, to restrict, அடக்க. 7. To oppose, to contradict, to interdict; to rebut, to repel, எதிர்க்க. 8. To frustrate, to thwart, குலைக்க. 9. To adjure, to hinter by oath, ஆணையிட. 1. To resist, to withstand, மறுக்க. 11. To forbid, as an ill omen, தவிர்க்க. 12. To dissuade, மறிக்க. 13. A stumbling block; an impediment. தடுக்கிநிற்க, inf. To stop in a course. தடுத்தாட்கொள்ள, inf. To hinder in a bad course and reclaim; to reform; commonly used in prayer. தடுத்தாள, inf. To check a soul in its evil tendencies, as, to transmigration, &c., and bring it to bliss; to overrule, as divine grace, for the benefit of the soul. தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To contradict, to retort, to refuse. தடுத்துப்போட, inf. To hinder, to resist. 2. To make a partition wall. தடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To put off, to postpone; to interdict. தடுபடை, s. A defensive weapon. tirāy (p. 239) s. A kind of edible, but bitter, herb or plant, ஓர்கசபப்ானபூண்டு.--There are different species as கம்பந்திராய், குத்துத்திராய், கைச்சற்றிராய், பணந்திராய், முள்ளந்திராய், முள்ளைத்தி ராய், &c. திராய்வேர், s. The திராய் root, which is sweetish. 28) *

He beat him so as to break his bones. அதுநெரிந்திருக்கிறது.....It is cracked or burised. நெரி, v. noun. Crack, burise, smash, breakage, நெரிவு. 2. Close, and short plaits in cloth, சேலையின்முரிப்பு. 3. Any fold or angular prominence, மடிப்பு. நெரிகொட்டை, s. [prov.] Crumbled areca-nuts, &c. நெரிபட, inf. To be fractured or bruised. காலின்கீழேகிடந்துநெரிபடுதல்..... Being servile, (lit.) trodden under foot. நெரிபுருவம், s. [also நெறித்தபுருவம்.] Eye-brows greatly curved in displeasure, ready to break, a poetic hyperbole. (p.) நெரிமீட்டான், appel. n. A kind of herb, the root of which is used for curing bruises, ஓர்பூடு. நெரிவு, v. noun. Fracture; variance, discord, disunion, பகை. 2. Cracking, pressing, &c., as the verb. அவ்விருவருக்குஞ்சற்றுநெரிவுண்டு. There is a little disunion, between those two persons. 90)

The moon as cool rayed, சந்திரன்கதிர். 2. See கதிர். பசுங்கதிர்த்தே. The moon, or the cool rayed deity. (சது.) பசுங்கரந்தை, s. A plant. See கரந்தை. பசுங்காய், s. Rice or other grain in the ear but not quite ripe. 2. An unripe fruit. பசுங்காய்ப்பதம், s. A stage in the ripening of grain. பசுங்கிளி, s. As பைங்கிளி, under பசு. பசுங்குடி, s. Grassy ground, verdant filed, &c. பசுமையுள்ளவன்--பசையுள்ளவன், appel. n. A man in good circumstances. பசும்பயறு, s. [com. பாசிப்பயறு.] A kind of lentils, as பச்சைப்பயறு. பசும்பிடி, s. A species of ever-green, the பச்சிலை tree. See தமாலம். (சது.) பசும்புல், s. Green grass, green sward. 2. (சது.) Growing corn, விளைபயிர். பசும்புற்றரை, s. As பசுந்தரை. பசும்பொன், s. Fine gold. 2. [prov.] Prosperity, command of money, பாக்கி யம்; [ex பசுமை.]--Of பச்சடி, are பாகற்காய்ப் பச்சடி, pickle of பாகல் fruit; மாங்காய்ப்பச் சடி, mango pickle; வாழைப்பூப்பச்சடி, pickle of plantain flowers. பச்சடிகண்டால்ஒட்டடிமகளே. My daughter, if you see [your lover.] prosperous, thing to him. [spoken by a time-server.] பச்சடியன், s. [prov.] A white and black bull or cow. பச்சரிசி, s. Rice hulled without boiling; for flour, &c. See புழுங்கலரிசி. பச்சிலை, s. A kind of ever-green, the தமாலம். Xanthocymus pictorious. 2. A green fresh leaf, பச்சையிலை. 3. A medicament consisting of leaves, பசுமருந்து. பச்சிலைகிச்சிலிக்கிழங்கு. The medicament, and கிச்சிலி, an aromatic root. பச்சிலைச்சாறுபோலே. Hue of leaf-juice, a leaf juice green. பச்சிலைப்பாம்பு, s. [com. பச்சைப்பாம் பு.] A kind of green snake. பச்சிலைமருந்து, s. Leaves used medicinally. பச்சிலையோணான், s. [prov. for பச்சோ ணான், which see.] The chameleon. பச்சிறைச்சி, s. Raw meat, flesh, &c. 2. A raw sore, பச்சைப்புண். பச்சுடம்பு, s. The tender body of an infant, or of a woman after child-birth. 2. One still sore from small pox, &c. பச்செனல், v. noun.
