kuṇam (p. 118) s. Quality, attribute, property, பண்பு. 2. Disposition, temper, nature, தன் மை. 3. Good quality, moral or physical; proper temperament, virtue, நற்குணம். 4. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. Ill nature, bad temper or disposition, குணக்கேடு. 2. Ill success, பயனின்மை. 3. Unfavorable signs in disease, &c., அசாத்தியம். குணப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities; abstract nouns; denotative nouns signifying attributes only--as கரு மை, அழகு--opposed to குணிப்பெயர்; பண்புப் பெயர். 2. Names either concrete or connotating, derived from abstractnouns --as கரியன், அழகன். குணமணி, s. One of an excellent disposition. குணமறிய, inf. To know one's disposition. 2. To understand or ascertain the symptoms of a disease. குணமாக்க, inf. v. a. To cure, heal; to restore to health. 2. To reform, to amend, to correct. குணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be whole, well, sound; to be well-conditional. 2. To be gratifying, pleasing, palatable. குணம்மாற, inf. To change--as temper, disposition, character, symptoms, either for the better or worse. குணமுங்குற்றமும், s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. One whose benevolence is like the sea; [ex இரத்தினாகரம்.] குணவதி, s. A very good natured person. Wils. p. 292. GUN'AVATI. குணவந்தன்--குணவான், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Freedom from all properties, குணங்கடந்துநிற்கை. குணாதீதன், s. God, He who is above all attributes; He whose attributes and perfections transcend our comprehension, கடவுள். Wils. p. 292. GUN'ATEE'TA. குணாலயன், s. The deity--as the seat and source of all perfections, கடவுள். இனியகுணம், s. A pleasant temper or disposition. நிர்க்குணன், s. The deity--as void of all properties, கடவுள். Wils. p. 474. NIRGUN'A. சத்துவகுணம், s. The first of the three principles, or properties in nature. 2. Nobleness of mind; magnanimity. 3. The exalted disposition of an ascetic's mind by which he disdains worldly delights, greatness, honors, &c. சற்குணம்--சுகுணம்--நற்குணம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)

cīlai (p. 191) s. Cloth, a cloth, clothes, garments,--as சீரை, ஆடை. (Sa. Cheera.) சீலைத்துணி, s. A piece, scrap, or rag of cloth. 2. Clothes. (Diminutively.) சீலைத்துண்டு, s. A piece of cloth. சீலைப்பாய், s. [prov. சீலம்பாய்.] A worn or torn cloth, கந்தைத்துணி. சீலைப்பேன், s. Lice in clothes. அவர்இப்போதுசீலைப்பேன்குத்துகிறார். He is killing the louse in his clothes, i. e., is without work and ragged. குளிசீலை, s. A fore-lap. See குளி, v. பட்டச்சீலை, s. [prov.] Sand-paper. (c.) சீலைப்புல், s. tayā (p. 224) s. Favor, clemency, compassion, கிருபை. W. p. 4. DAYA. (Used only in combination.) தயாசமுத்திரம், s. A sea of grace. தயாசீலம், s. Grace, graciousness. தயாசீலன், s. A benevolent, gracious person. தயாபரன், s. (voc. தயாபரா.) The gracious god. 2. (fem. தயாபரி.) A beneficent man. நரசீலதயாபரர். God, who is bountiful towards men. தயாமூர்்த்தி, s. The incarnation of benevolence. தயாவிருத்தி, s. Increase of grace, கிரு பைமிகுதல். 2. The fourteen acts of beneficence, தயாவிருத்தி, 14.--The first seven relate to the soul, the other seven to the body. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *

Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. Peculiar or prescribed duty, occupation, &c., according to the different ranks and classes in society--as giving alms, &c., by the house-holder; administering justice, by kings; piety and performing rites by brahmans; courage, bravery in the solider; shaving in the barber, சாதிக்குரிய கருமம். 5. Nature, instinct, characteristic, property or action in animals--as humming in bees, barking in dogs, இயல்பு. 6. Inherent and peculiar qualities in plants, as fragrance in flowers; flavors in fruits, குணம். W. p. 439. DHARMMA.--Note. The negative of the above is அதர்மம், injustice, &c. தருமந்தலைகாக்கும். Uprightness will preserve the head; i. e. the life. தருமகர்த்தா, s. Wardens of a heathen temple. 2. Arbitrators, judges, jurymen. தருமகாரியம், s. A charitable act, subject, affair, &c. 2. (fig.) Marriage by charity. தருமகேத்திரம்--தருமக்ஷேத்திரம், s. A place near Delhi, where the Kurus and Pandavas fought. See குருசேத்திரம். தருமக்கட்டை, s. An orphan, supported by strangers, அநாதப்பிள்ளை. (c.) 2. A rubbing post for cattle, ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி. தருமக்கிழவர், s. Traders of three kinds, the வைசியர் caste; (lit.) guardians of justice. See வைசியர், 3. தருமக்கொடை, s. A donation for a charitable purpose. தருமக்கொள்ளி, appel. n. One who lights a funeral pile in charity. தருமக்கோள்--தருமசாடி, s. Indirect information as to any secret crime. தருமங்களைப்போதிக்க, inf. To teach religious duties. தருமசங்கடம், s. [in casuistry.] Difficulty of distinguishing between two duties, காரியமுட்டுப்பாடு. தருமசங்கிதை, s. Some specific book of the law, ஒர்தருமநூல். தருமசத்திரம், s. A rest-house for travellers. தருமசபை, s. Council of arbitrators. தருமசமுஸ்காரம், s. Burying, or burning the deceased poor, அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடு தல். தருமசாட்சி, s. King's evidence, witnesses cited by the king. தருமசாதனப்பட்டையம்--தருமசாத னம், s. A deed of endowment inscribed on copper. See சாதனம். தருமசாது, s. A very mild, patient and benevolent person, தருமிஷ்டி. தருமசாத்திரம், s. Code of laws, especially the Smriti; rules of justice; ethics, moral philosophy; jurisprudence, ஸ்மிருதி. See கலைஞானம். தருமசாலி, s. A person famed for charity; [ex சாலி.] தருமசாலை, s. An almonry, or place, where any, or all, of the thirty-two charitable acts are performed. தருமசிந்தை--தருமசிந்தனம், s. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Moral, religious, virtuous conduct; observing prescribed duties according to one's caste. தருமநாள், s. The third lunar asterism --as பரணி. தருமநியாயம்--தருமநீதி, s. Impartial discussion as given in the code of laws. (c.) தருமநூல், s. Works on law, ethics and jurisprudence, called Smriti; eighteen are in repute (though the சதுரகராதி makes nineteen), named for the most part after their authors. 1. மனு. 2. அத் திரி. 3. ஔரிதம். 4. விட்டுணு. 5. யாஞ்ஞவற் கியம். 6. உசனம். 7. ஆங்கீரசம். 8. யமம். 9. ஆபஸ்தம்பம். 1. சம்வர்த்தம். 11. காத்தி யாயனம். 12. பிரகஸ்பதி. 13. பராசரம். 14. வியாசம். 15. சங்கலிதம். 16. தக்கம். 17. கௌதமம். 18. சாதான்மம். 19. வசிட்டம். Of these, மனு is peculiar to the first age of the world, கிரேதாயுகம்; கௌதமம், to the second, திரேதாயுகம்; சங்கலிதம், to the third, துவாபாயுகம், as well as common to them all; and பராசரம் to the கலியுகம். தருமபத்தினி, s. A virtuous wife, கற் புள்ளமனைவி. தருமபுத்திரன், s. As தருமநந்தனன். See under தருமன். தருமபுருஷன், s. A charitable and pious man. தருமப்பள்ளி, s. A charity school. தருமப்பிணம், s. A corpse buried by public charity. தருமப்பிரபு, s. A man eminent for equity and benevolence. தருமப்பிள்ளை, s. One brought up by public charity, as a mountebank to exhibit before the tribe in which he was reared. (Used at the South. In Madras, நோக்கர்.) தருமப்பெட்டி, s. A charity box. தருமப்போர், s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. Seat of Justice. 2. prov. also தருமாசனபூமி.] An endowment of land to a temple. (c.) தருமாதருமம், s. Justice and injustice, virtue and vice, அறமும்மறமும். (c.) தருமாத்துமா, s. As தருமி. தருமி, s. A virtuous man or woman. 2. (திருவிளை.) A celebrated brahman. தருமிஷ்டன்--தருமிஷ்டி, s. A charitable, righteous person. தருமிஷ்டர், s. (Hon.) As தருமிஷ்டன். 2. (R. C. usage.) (plu.) தானம்
tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3. To make donations to a guru or brahman in the last extremity. See தாசதானம். தானங்கொடுத்தபசு, s. A cow given to a brahman or to a temple, just before death. தானசீலன், s. A liberal, charitable man. தானதருமம்--தானதன்மம், s. Alms and presents. தானபத்திரம்--தானபத்திரிகை, s. A deed of gift. தானாதிகருமங்கள், s. Bestowing alms, and performing other religious rites and duties. 12) *
நாணயம்
nāṇym (p. 273) --நாணையம், s. Uprightness, honesty, probity, honor, truth, punctuality, நேர்மை. 2. Trust, credit, a good name, superior worth or honor, உண் மை. 3. Extraordinary facts, or supposed facts, in neture, as of the tiger, when missing in a leap, not turning upon the object of his leap; the bos grunniens, when entrapped, making no effort to escape; a cobra retiring from the sight of the நாக தாளி root; the occurrence but once of the small pox, &c;., நிருணயம். 4. Supposed virtue of an action, plant, &c., as the presenting of an herb to the eye as a cure of ophthalmia, தவறாமை. 5. [prov, in combi.] The perforation of the septum of a beast's nose for inserting a rope to guide in, or the rope thus inserted, மூக்குத்துளைத்தல். 6. That which is choice or rare as a commodity, உயர்வு. (c.) நாணயத்தால்கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல், v. noun. Dealing on trust. நாணயக்கயிறு, s. Rope passed through a bullock's nose, to guide it. நாணயக்காரன், s. An upright dealer. நாணயங்காட்டுதல், v. noun. Acquitting one's self honourably. நாணயங்குத்துதல், v. noun. Perforating the septum of a bullock's nose, மாட் டுக்குமூக்குத்துளைத்தல். நாணயசில்லம், s. [prov. vul. சீலம்.] Dishonesty, breach of trust. நாணயச்சரக்கு, s. A commodity of value liable to depreciate from being kept. நாணயஞ்செலுத்துதல், v. noun. Acquitting one's self honorably in business. நாணயத்தப்பு, s. Dishonesty. நாணயபங்கம், s. Loss of credit. 2. Disgrace, as to a woman in appearing before a court. நாணயப்பணம், s. A good coin--oppo. to தேய்கடைப்பணம், one worn. நாணயப்புடவை, s. Fine cloth. நாணயவிலை, s. A fair and proper price. 78)
நூல்
nūl (p. 279) s. Thread, yarn, string, line, இழை. 2. A literary or scientific treatise, கல்விநூல். 3. Science, system, literature, சாஸ்திரம். 4. Deliberation, counsel, mature consideration, எண்ணம். (சது.) 5. The badge-string of the sacerdotal, the royal and of some mechanical tribes, பூணூல். 6. A string tied round an image in a Roman Catholic Church, in token of a vow, பொருத்தனைநூல். 7. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். Study many books. (Avv.) நூலில்லாமல்மாலைகோத்தல். Stringing flowers without a thread; i. e. fabricating. நூற்மறைதெரிந்துசீலத்தொழுகு. Search the Shastras, and lead a regular life. (Avv.) நூலச்சு, s. A weaver's reed, நெசவச்சு. 2. [prov.] A goldsmith's mould for drawing wire, கம்பியச்சு. நூலடி, s. [prov.] A line or membrane passing from the privy parts to the anus. 2. A mark made with the carpenter's line, நூற்குறி. நூலட்டவணை, s. Contents of a book. நூலரங்கேற்ற, inf. See அரங்கேற்ற. நூலறிவு, s. Knowledge of science. நூலாசிரியன், s. The author of a work. நூலாதாரம், s. A primer or first book; the alphabet; [ex ஆதாரம்.] நூலாமாலை, s. Craft, artifice, devices. (R.) நூலாய்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Critics, reviewers, revisers. நூலான்புடை, s. A spider's web. [Madura usage.] See ஒட்டடை. நூலான்பூச்சி, s. The spider, சிலந்திப் பூச்சி. (Beschi.) நூலியற்கை, s. Moral of legal rules. நூலியாப்பு, s. The composition of a work, being of four kinds: 1. தொகுத்தல், substance in brief, compendium, synopsis; 2. விரித்தல், detail, amplification; 3. தொகைவிரி, compendium and detail; 4. மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, translation. நூலிழந்தவள், appel. n. A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To buy thread as a weaver. 2. See எடு, v. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder, கயிற்றேணி. 2. [in mythol.] Fancied threads or strings, as a guide, by which to pass and repass through the sky, to and from the world of the celestials. 3. [prov.] The shrouds of a vessel, பாய்மரத்தேணி. நூலோடுதல், v. noun. Warping for the loom, பாவோடுதல். நூலோட்ட, inf. To sew or stitch loosely, to haste. நூலோர், s. [pl.] Brahmans as wearing the sacred thread, பார்ப்பார். 2. The learned, the literati, அறிவுடையோர். 3. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். (சது.) நூல்கேட்க, inf. To learn a science under a teacher. See கேள், v. நூல்சுற்றுதல், v. noun. Rolling or winding yarn, thread, &c., on a ball, skein, &c., 2. Winding thread round a sacrificial pot. See கும்பகலசம். நூல்செய்வித்தோன், appel. n. The patron of a work, or a person who moves the author to write a book. நூல்திரிக்க--நூல்முறுக்க, inf. To twist yarn. நூல்நிமிண்டுதல், v. noun. Twisting broken threads together. நூல்நிமிண்டுகிறபேச்சு. Unconnected talk. நூல்போடுதல், v. noun. Marking with a thread, as a carpenter, &c., குறிபோடு தல். 2. Putting on the thread of the Brahman or other caste, பூணூல்போடுதல். நூல்போட்டுப்பிளத்தல், v. noun. Marking and cleaving, as timber. 2. Making an exact division, commonly into halves. 3. [in irony.]Administering strict or rigid justice. நூல்வலை, s. A fisherman's net. நூல்வல்லோர், s. [pl.] The learned, the literati, கல்விமான்கள். 2. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். நூல்வழக்கு, s. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. Notes of an explanatory character given at the end of a work. See புறனடை. நூற்பொருள், s. Subjects treated of or inculcated in a book. 2. Contents of a book, நூலட்டவணை. நூற்றீட்சை, s. Spiritual illumination by the Shastras. See தீட்சை. நூற்றார், s. A weaver's bobbin; [ex தார்.] நூனயம், s. Advantage or pleasure of learning, கல்விநயம். 2.
