To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. The six obbreviations of letters, viz.: குற்றியலிகரம், abbreviated இ, --as in நாகியாது, எஃகியாது, வரகியாது, கொக்கி யாது, குரங்கியாது, தெள்கியாது, கேண்மியா,சென் மியா. 2. குற்றியலுகரம், abbreviated உ--as நாகு, எஃகு, வரகு, கொக்கு, குரங்கு, தெள்கு. 3. ஐகாரக்குறுக்கம், abbreviated ஐ--as ஐப்பசி. இ டையன், குவளை. In opposition or contradiction. குறுக்கேதடுக்க, inf. To interpose and prevent--as a by-stander. 2. To meet a person, stop him and forbid his proceeding. 3. To check, prevent, obstruct, stop, interrupt. குறுக்கேபோக, inf. To go across; to go a short way. 2. To cross one's track, or path--as a cat, &c., considered a bad omen. 3. To pass between persons or things. 4. To die prematurely and in the prime of life. 5. To transgress one's commands; to go or act against one's wishes, counsel, &c. குறுக்கிட, inf. To come across--as animals of bad omen. 2. To interfere. குறுக்களவு, s. Dimension across; thickness; the diameter. 2. The extent or measure of any line or direction parallel wit the diameter. குறுக்கடி, s. A precipitate step or measure; a rash course; a contrary or contradictory procedure. 2. A short, hasty, abrupt or crabbed answer; an assertion without due deliberation. 3. A stroke at one's loins. குறுக்கடிநியாயம், s. Abrupt, inconclusive reasoning. குறுக்கடியாயடிக்க, inf. The principal virtue is in the chunam; (to make the mouth red in chewing betel.) சூட்சத்தில்முடித்துக்கொண்டுவாரும். Have the business done with little cost. சூட்சக்காரன், s. A skilful, ingenious person. 2. A cunning, artful person. சூட்சபுத்தி, s. Great ingenuity, superior invention, genius. சூட்சமாகப்பண்ண, inf. To act, skilfully, display ingenuity, perform extraordinary deeds, to subtilize. 2. To practise stratagems, உபாயம்பண்ண. சூட்சமானவேலை, s. Nice, ingenious, skilful workmanship. சூட்சம்பண்ண, inf. To manage economically. நீசெவலைச்சூட்சம்பண்ணவேண்டும். You must curtail your expenses. சூட்சவழி, s. A short, skilful method in art or science. 2. A good, moral system, நன்னெறி. 3. A short road, சுருக் கவழி. See சுளுவானவழி. சூட்சக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. சூட்சத்தைத்தட்ட--சூட்சந்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap to the working machine. சூட்சமறிய, inf. To get a clue to a subject, &c. சூட்சமானசெலவு, s. Economical expense. (c.) சூட்சம்போட, inf. To make a contrivance for the equilibrium of a kite in the air. சூட்சம்வைக்க, inf. To give a written account. 2. To state a particular number or sum. 3. To make a sum appear large, to magnify. 4. v. n. To appear large, as an amount. தொகைகூட்ட, inf. To add up. தொகைக்காரன், s. A man of considerable property, தனவான், (c.) தொகைச்சூத்திரம், s. One of the six kinds of rules for composition. See சூத்தி ரம். தொகைதைக்க, inf. To make out the grand total of an account. See தை, v. தொகைநிலை, s. A summary, contraction, ellipsis, &c., சுருங்கிநிற்கை. 2. [in gram.] The connection of a word with the பயனிலை by omitting a particle, வேற்று மையுருபுமுதலியதொக்குநிற்றல்.--It embrasces six varieties; 1. வேற்றுமைத்தொகை, the omission of the sign or from of the case, as பொன்கொடுத்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொடுத் தான். 2. வினைத்தொகை, a verb without the sign of the tense, combined with a noun, as கொல்புலி for கொன்றபுலி, கொல்கின்றபுலி, கொல்லும்புலி. 3. பண்புத்தொகை, omission of the adjective sign ஆகிய or ஆய in combining the qualifying epithet with the noun, as கருங்குவளை for கருமையாகியகுவளை, or two nouns in apposition, as ஆதிபக வன். 4. உவமைத்தொகை, the combination of two words with the omission of the sign of comparison, as பான்மொழி for பால் போலுமொழி. 5. உம்மைத்தொகை, omission of the particle உம், as கபிலபாணர் for கபிலனு ம்பாணனும்; also இராப்பகல் for இராவும், பகலும். --Note. In this combination. there is commonly no reduplication. 6. அன்மொ ழித்தொகை, a metonomy or omission of a word, commonly the name of a person, immediately after any of the five preceeding ellipses, as பொற்றொடி. for பொற் றொடியையுடையாள், the golden braceletdamsel. தொகைநிலைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem consisting of a fixed, even number of verses, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். தொகைநிலைத்தொடர்மொழி, s. As உவ மைத்தொகை. (R.) தொகைநிலையுருவகம், s. [in rheto.] A perfect metaphor, ஓரலங்காரம். தொகைபடுவது, appel. n. Contraction of words, as தொகப்படுவது. தொகைபார்க்க, inf. To sum of cast up the amount. (c.) தொகைபூட்ட, inf. [prov.] To balance accounts, to strike a balance, கணக்குச்சரிக் கட்ட. 2. Modes of constructing verse of which eight are given; 1. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், natural, as the nominative accompanied by its various attributes, adjuncts, &c., followed by its object, if any, and concluded by the verb; 2. மொழிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், construction, in which the nominative and verb are interchanged, with another nominative and verb; 3. நிரனிறைப்பொருள் கோள், when subjects, and attributes, or nominatives and their verbs, are given in distinct series, see நிரனிறை; 4. விற் பூண் or விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், when the nominative is at the beginning, and its verb at the end, or the contrary; 5. தரப்பிசைப்பொருள்கோள், when a noun or verb belongs alike to the preceding and following parts of a verse or sentence, see தாப்பிசை; 6. அளைமறிபாப்புப்பொ ருள்கோள், another kind of construction, see அளை; 7. கொண்டுகூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், a construction which requires the words to be selected here and there; 8. அடிமறி மாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், a verse in which the lines of the stanza are interchangeable, see அடிமறிமாற்று. பொருள்விளங்கவைத்தல், v. noun.
