akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. To get into possession, secure unjustly, get over to one's interest, secure, வசமாக்க. (பஞ். 21.) 3. To appoint (divinely), destine, institute, fix, விதிக்க. 4. arumpu (p. 26) s. A bud, a flower bud, மொட்டு. 2. Small globules or granules of gold, &c., in imitation of flower-buds in jewelry, பொன்முதலியவற்றாற்செய்தவரும்பு. 3. Soft hair or young beard, மெல்லியமயிர். அரும்புமணி, s. A necklace of gold beads set with granules of gold. அரும்பூதுகை, v. noun. Making globules of gold by blowing. 7)

aruḷ (p. 26) --அருளு, கிறேன், அருளி னேன், வேன், அருள, v. a. To be gracious to, favor, grant, bestow, கிருப்பைசெய்ய. 2. To create, உண்டாக்க. 3. To preserve, காக்க. 4. To say, சொல்ல. 5. (fig.) To command, permit, உத்தரவுபண்ண. (p.)--Note. It is used also as an auxiliary to other verbs, as செய்தருளும், graciously do it. 21) *

aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. To investigate, examine, search into. அவனை அளவிடக்கூடாது. One cannot fathom him. அளவிடப்படாத, neg. rel. part. Incomprehensible. அளவிடை, v. noun. Measuring, admeasurement, அளவிடுகை. 2. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

iyṟṟu (p. 48) கிறேன், இயற்றினேன், வே ன், இயற்ற, v. n. To do , make, effect, perform, execute, bring about, cause to take place, discharge a duty or obligation, exercise or use an art, செய்ய. 2. To transact, manage affairs, superintend, cause or excite one to do a thing, நடத்த. 3. To destine, appoint, assign, விதிக்க. (p.) இயற்றலுமீட்டலுங்காத்தலும். Devising means to increase the finances, collecting and keeping them. எல்லாத்தவமுமியற்றி. Performing every species of austerity. ஐந்துவேள்ளியுமியற்றி. Offering the five daily oblations. இறந்தவர்கள்காமுறுமிருங்கடனியற்றி. Duly discharging the debt demanded by departed spirits. இயற்றுதற்கருத்தா--இயற்றும்வினை முதல், s. [in grammar.] The agent, the actor in distinction from ஏவுதற்கருத்தா, commander-as செய்வதன், distinguished from செய்வித்தவன். இயற்றும்வினை, s. [in grammar.] Verbs expressing action, performed by one's self--as செய்தான், in distinction from ஏவும்வினை. 23)

iracam (p. 48) s. Flavor, relish; what is tasteful, agreeable, palatable, delicious; taste in general, good or bad--also the six flavors. (See சுவை.) 2. Sweetness, இனிமை. 3. Sweet juice of fruits, &c., vegetable juice in general, சாறு. 4. Mercury, quicksilver, hydrargyrum, பாதரசம். 5. (p.) One of the juices of the body, சத்ததாதுவினொன்று. (See தாது.) It corresponds more with chyle than any other, but probably it is fanciful. 6. Pepper-water made of several ingredients, மிளகுநீர். 7. [in rhetoric.] The passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry, வீரமுதலியவெண்சுவை. Of these eight are given; viz.: 1. வீரம் or வீரியம், courage. 2. அச்சம், பயம், or பயானகம், fear, terror. 3. இழிப்பு, விபற்சம், குற்சை, அருவரு ப்பு, abominating, loathing at or disgusting. 4. வியப்பு or அற்புதம், wonder, surprise, astonishment. 5. காமம், சிங்காரம், சிருங்காரம், love, sexual love. 6. அவலம் or கருணை, acute sensibility, weakness, tenderness, mercy, pity, clemency. 7. உருத்திரம், கோ பம், இரௌத்திரம், பெருங்கோபம், warlike fury, wrath, displeasure, rage. 8. நகை, பெரு நகை or ஆசியம், laughter, mirth, risibility, great or intense laughter, laughing in contempt. By some, சாந்தம், tranquillity, equanimity, peace, abstraction or the stoicism of the ascetics; and by others வற்சலம், parental tenderness are given as a ninth meaning; இரசம் is added at pleasure with the loss in some cases of its initial-as வீராசம், இழிப்பிரசம், &c. Wils. p. 697. RASA. இரசகந்தாயம், s. Tribute, the fatness of the earth. இரசகந்தாயமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak pleasingly. இரசகருப்பூரம், s. Muriate of mercury, ஓர்மருந்து. இரசகுண்டு, s. [prop. இரசக்குண் டு.] A globular glass filled with mercury as a decoration at weddings, &c., also as a charm. இரசகுளிகை--இரசமாத்திரை, s. A quick-silver pill employed in medicine, இரசத்தினாற்செய்தமாத்திரை. 2. [in alchemy.] A pill feigned to be used by a class of persons called சித்தர், now in the world of Indra, who thereby perform supernatural actions--as கமனஞ்செய்கை, or passing through the air to any desired place, சித்தர்குளிகை. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Condensed mercury, சூதக்கட்டு. இரசக்கிணறு--இரசக்குழி, s. A pit or mine where quick-silver is obtained. இரசக்குடுக்கை, s. A little bottle of mercury. இரசசிந்தூரம், s. Red precipitate of mercury. இரசஞ்சுத்திபண்ண, inf. To purify quick-silver. இரசதாது, s. Quick-silver, சூதம். Wils. p. 698. RASAD'HATU. இரசதாளி, s. A species of plantain, கப்பல்வாழை. இரசத்தைக்கட்டிப்புடமிட, inf. To reduce mercury by decoction. இரசத்தைப்பஸ்மமாக்க, inf. To reduce mercury into powder. இரசநாதம், s. Quick-silver, இர சம். Wils. p. 698. RASANATHA. இரசபஸ்பம்--இரசபஸ்மம்--இரச பற்பம், s. Mercury reduced to white powder, a kind of muriate of mercury or calcinated mercury, சூதபஸ்பம். Wils. p. 698. RASAB'HASMAN. இரசபாஷாணம், s. A kind of prepared arsenic. இரசப்பிரீதி--இரசமாதா, s. One of the hundred-and-twenty kinds of arsenic in its natural state. இரசமணி, s. Hard globules of mercury prepared by incantations, &c., and worn as an amulet in order to prevent evil, cure diseases, to promote success in undertakings, &c. இரசமுறிக்க, inf. To prepare mercury for medicine. 2. To carry mercury off from the body. இரசலிங்கம், s. Vermilion, சாதி லிங்கம். 2. A case of mercury for a linga. இரசவாதம்--இரசவித்தை, s. Alchemy--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். இரசவாதம்பண்ண, inf. To practise the art of alchemy. இரசவாதி, s. An alchemist. இரசவாழை--இரதவாழை, s. [improp. இதரைவாழை.] A species of plantain, பேயன்வாழை. இரசவைப்பு, s. Any preparation from mercury--as a muriate, sulphate, &c., an amalgam. இரசனை, s. Flavor, deliciousness, sweetness, delicacy, சுவை. 2. The tongue, நாக்கு. 3. Juice, sap, essence, சாறு. இரசாதிபதி--இரசாதிபன், s. [in astrology.] The sun or one of the planets presiding over fruits, vegetables, &c., for the given years, இரசவஸ்துகட்கதி காரியாங்கிரகம். இரசாபாசம், A loss of flavor, or of juice. இரசேந்திரம், s. il (p. 55) . A form of the fifth case, (see இன்), ஐந்தனுருபு, which denotes. 1. Removal, withdrawal, நீங்கல். (a) Literally --as தமரிற்றீர்ந்தான், he has left his relations, i. e. for ascetic life. (b) (fig.) In which it expresses speciality, disparity, &c., and includes the comparative degree --as அரசரிற்பெரியரந்தணர், the Brahman caste is superior to the royal. 2. Similitude, ஒப்பு--as திறல்வேனுதியிற்பூத்தகேணி. A tank whose flowers resemble the points of mighty lances. 3. The bearing of a place, எல்லை--as கருவூரில்வடக்கு, north of Caroor.--Note. This form of the fifth case is peculiar to the poetic dialect. 4. The primitive cause, ஏது--as பொன்னிற் செய்தமுடி, a crown made of gold. 24)

iẕ (p. 55) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To lose, forfeit, to be bereaved of, to suffer loss, இழந்துபோக. இழப்பு, v. noun. Loss, privation, forfeiture, இழந்துவிடுகை. இழப்புணி, s. One who has lost a child, a husband, property, &c. இழவு, v. noun. Loss, deprivation, forfeiture, bereavement, நஷ்டம். 2. Death, மரணம். அந்தவீட்டிலேயிழவுபட்டபாடாயிருக்கிறது...... There is affliction in that house, as if a death had occurred there. இழவுகாத்தல், v. noun. [vul.] Keeping close to the house--as mourners till after the eighth day of the funeral ceremony. இழவுகாரன்--இழவுக்குரியவன், s. The chief mourner at the funeral. இழவுகொடுக்க--இழவுக்கடிக்க, inf. To mourn at a funeral, to condole with, to bewail the dead--as women do, beating their breasts, &c. அப்படிச்செய்துபோட்டு அவனோடே இழவு கொடுக்கிறதார்? Who will expose himself to be troubled by him, for doing so? இழவுகொண்டாடுதல், v. noun. Mourning for the dead, accompained by external gestures, lamentations, beating the breast, &c., either at the funeral, or at stated periods afterwards. இழவுக்குப்போக, inf.
