kṉi (p. 102) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To ripen--as fruits, to grow ripe, to be ripe, mellow, luscious, sweet, பழுக்க. 2. To be over-ripe, நைய. 3. To be in flames, to glow, பழுக்கக்காய. 4. To grow tender, to melt, be soft--as the heart by affection, sexual love, devotion, &c., கரைய. 5. To be melted, to be in a state of fusion, உருக. 6. (p.) To be cheerful, be glad, மனங்க ளிக்க. 7. To be excessively enraged, கோபி க்க. 8. v. a. To bury, conceal, hide, புதைக்க. கிழங்குகனியவெந்தது. The yams are well boiled. கனிந்தசொல், s. Sweet words. கனிந்தபழம், s. Ripe fruit. கனிந்தபாடம், s. A well-learnt lesson, verse, &c., well committed to memory. கனியப்பண்ண, inf. To cause to grow tender--as fruits, or the heart. 2. To pacify, conciliate, win over. கனியப்பழுக்க, inf. krumm (p. 96) s. Act, action, moral actions involving future retribution, &c., கிரியை. 2. Actions of a previous birth, good or evil, entailed on the soul and resulting in the enjoyments and sufferings of the present or a future state, fate, destiny, முன்வினை. 3. Business, profession, occupation, attempt, essay, enterprise, தொழில். 4. Religious rites, duties, &c., stated, periodical, or otherwise, according to the rules of the shasters; moral duty, specific action, duty, obligation imposed by peculiarities of tribe or occupation, &c., வைதீகக்கிரியை. 5. Natural activity, self-moving energy, &c., இயற்கைச்சொல். 6. (4.) உச்சா டனம், setting demons against one to ruin him by magical incantations, or dislodging them from persons or places. (5.) ஆகருட ணம், summoning or invoking a spirit or absent person visibly into one's presence. (6.) வித்துவேடணம், excitment to hatred. (7.) பேதனம், causing separation, dissension, discord. Knowledge and skill religious exercise and ceremonies. கருமத்தலைவர், s. Royal fortunetellers, astrologers, conjurers, foretellers of future events, வருங்காரியஞ்சொல்வோர். கருமத்தலைவன், s. a superntendent. 2. A minister, அரசர்க்குத்துணைவன். கருமத்துரோகம், s. Treachery, treason, villainy துரோகஞ்செய்யல். கருமநிவிர்த்தி, s. Ceremonies performed to expiate the evil deeds of former births in times of disease, &c. கருமபந்தம்--கருமபந்தனம், s. The tie or vinculum, கருமபாசம், Which connects the actions of a former birth with their fruits in after transmigrations. Wils. p. 198. KARMMABANTHANA. கருமபாகை, s. One of the three parts of the Vedas, relating to daily ceremonial rites, வேதத்தின்பொருட்பாகுபாட் டிலொன்று. See ஞானபாகை, and அருத்தபாகை. கருமபூமி, s. The part of the earth deemed most sacred in which Hinduism prevails and religious rites are regularly performed, வினைசெய்தற்குரியபூமி. Wils. p. 198. KARMMAB'HUMI. 2. A place of cremation, சுடுகாடு. கருமபூமிக்குரிமை, s. The six occupations of men, viz.: 1. வரைவு, marriage. 2. தொழில். trade. 3. வித்தை, study. 4. வாணிபம், merchandize. 5. உழவு, husbandry. 6. சிற்பம், the arts. கருமமுடிக்க, inf. To accomplish one's purpose. 2. To perform duties, rites, ceremonies, &c., especially the daily rites and duties of religion. கருமவியாதி, s. Prescribed funeral rites for deceased ancestors, அந்தியேட்டிமுதலிய சடங்கு. கருமாதிகாரன், s. A ruler, a governor, கருமத்தலைவன். கருமாதிசெய்ய, inf. To perform funeral rites. கருமாத்துமா, s. The family is thriving or flourishing. குடிகனத்தவூர், s. A populous village, a densely-inhabited town. குடிகுலத்திலுள்ளவன், s. A person of good caste, family, &c. குடிகெடுதல், v. noun. Being ruined, undone or destroyed. குடிகெடுக்க--குடியைக்கெடுக்க, inf. TO destroy or ruin a family. குடிகேடன்--குடிகேடி, s. One who ruins a family. 2. the ruiner of a family, being one of the number. குடிகேடு, s. Ruin to a family; an unavoidable ruin. குடிகொள்ள, inf. To inhabit, dwell; to take possession of the mind--as a deity or devil; or of a house--as a demon; also--as bats, snakes, &c.; to be seated or eatablished--as a lingering or chronic disease. என்னுளங்குடிகொண்டகுலதெய்வமே. [prov.] Land appropriated to buildings --as an item in a dowry, குடியிருக்கச்சீதனங் கொடுத்தநிலம். குடிபுக, inf. To commence occupying a new house with appropriate ceremonies. 2. Militia. குடிப்பழுது, s. Stigma on a family, disgrace, disrepute. குடிப்பாங்கு, s. The habits of a cultivator, or an agriculturist. குடிப்பிறப்பு, s. High birth; being born of a distinguished family. குடிப்பெண், s. The lawful wife--as distinguished from a concubine. குடிப்பெயர், s. Family name. 2. [in gram.] Nouns of family names--as in ஊர்கிழான். குடிமகன், s. A feudatory, or a man of the servile tribe in relation to the families (குடி) of superior caste, to which under certain restrictions he is subject. The connexion is commonly hereditary. 2. A barber, அம்பட்டன். குடிமக்கள், s. Servile castes in relation to their feudal chiefs, eighteen in number: 1. வண்ணான், washerman. 2. நாவி தன், barber. 3. குயவன், potter. 4. தட்டான், gold or silver-smith. 5. கன்னான், brazier. 6. கற்றச்சன், mason. 7. கொல்லன், blacksmith. 8. தச்சன், carpenter. 9. எண்ணெ ய்வாணிகன், oil-monger. 1. உப்புவாணிகன், salt-dealer. 11. இலைவாணிகன், betel-seller. 12. பள்ளி. 13. பூமாலைக்காரன், garlandmaker. 14. The special servants in the above are the barber, washerman, black-smith, carpenter and grave-digger. குடிமதிப்பு, s. Assessment, valuation of property for taxation. குடிமார்க்கம்--குடிமுறை, s. Domestic life. 2. Proper conduct as a householder. குடிமிராசி--குடிமிராசு, s. The right or privilege of a hereditary occupant. குடிமிராசிகொடுக்க, inf. To endue with particular மிராசு privileges. குடிமை, s. Customs or manners of the higher classes, மேற்குலத்தார்நடக்கை. 2. Lineage, family, descent. குடிவரலாறு. 3. Vassalage, servitude, feudal dependence, feudal right or cunnexion; a feudatory in reference to his chief. (See குடிமக்கள்.) --Note. The chief is entitled to the service of his feudatory whenever required, and the latter to a proportion of the produce of the land, to perquisites at weddings, funerals, &c. 4. Domestic life, family economy, குடிச்செயல். 5. A king in relation to his subjects, அரசன். (குற.) குடியரசு-குடியாட்சி, s. Democracy, government by the people. குடியிறை, s. Tax, impost--as collected from the subjects, குடிவரி. குடிவாரம், s. Share of produce to the inhabitant or cultivator--as distinguished from மேல்வாரம். குடியழிக்க, inf. v. a. To ruin a family. குடியழிய, inf. v. n. To be buried or ruined--as a family. குடியழிவு, v. noun. Ruin of a family. 2. A great evil, often hyperbolically used. குடியானவன், s. An inhabitant; emphatically a caste man, one not of a low caste. குடியியல்பு, s. Domestic life, family management. 2. Domestic order, domestic rules of management. குடியிருப்பு, s. Living--as a family, or an inhabitant; residing, குடியிருக்கை. 2. An inhabited, settled, or populated place, a village, கிராமம். 3. The parts of a village inhabited by different castes respectively. The name of the caste is commonly prefixed --as செட்டிகுடியிருப்பு, a chitties' village. குடியிறங்க, inf. To settle, tarry or halt --as a family or a tribe. குடியிற்பிறந்தவன், s. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. To settle people in a country, to stock with inhabitants, to people, to populate. குடிவாழ்க்கை, v. noun. Domestic economy, house-keeping. 2. Regulation of a household. குடிவிளங்கப்பண்ண, inf. To render a family illustrious' and prosperous. குடிவைக்க-குடியிருத்த, inf. To settle or establish a family. 2. To provide a family with the means of sustenance. சிறந்தகுடி, s. A family in prosperous circumstances. சுகவாசிக்குடி, s. A tenant; a renter or cultivator--as distinguished from மூரிக் குடி. See மூரிக்குடி. நல்லகுடி, s. A good or well-ordered family. 2. A well-settled family, a family in prosperous circumstances. நைந்தகுடி, s. An impoverished family. பசுங்குடி, s. Husbandmen. பயிர்க்குடி, s. Husbandmen, tillers. வந்தேறுகுடி, s. tuṭi (p. 245) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To quiver, shake, throb, flutter, palpitate, flounder as a fish thrown ashore, அசைய. 2. To be rude, mischievous, giddy, roguish, குதிக்க. 3. To be anxious through suspense; to be eager, to be in great agitation, தத்தளிக்க. 4. To shine, glitter, corruscate, lighten, மின்ன. 5. (fig.) To suffer by the gnawings of hunger, பசியினால்வருந்த. (c.) துடித்துப்பதைத்துவந்தான். He came in extreme anxiety, and agitation. பெற்றகுடல்துடிக்கிறது. The mother yearns over her child; (lit.) her bowels yearn. அரணைவால்துடிக்கின்றது. The tail of the lizard (cut off) leaps. பிள்ளைதுடிக்கிறது. The child is fidgety, rude, &c. கண்துடிக்க, inf. To quiver or throb as the eye, supposed to be indicative of good or ill, to the person or his relations.--Note. If the right eye or other right part of a man throb, it is deemed a good sign, but of a woman it is bad and vice versa. மனந்துடிக்க, inf. To be agitated, as the mind, through anxiety, anger, disappointments. துடி, v. noun. Quivering, palpitating, dancing, &c. துடிசாத்திரம்--துடிநூல், s. The art of determining events by the quivering of different parts of the body, also works treating on the art, ஓர்நிமித்தநூல். துடிதுடிக்க, inf. To quiver, throb, flutter, பதைபதைக்க. 2. To be rude, fidgety, mischievous, கடுகடுக்க. (c.) துடித்தல்--துடிப்பு--துடிதுடிப்பு. v. noun. Quivering, throbbing, fluttering, பதைபதைப்பு. 2. Rudeness, mischief, கடு கடுப்பு. 3. Great anxiety. சரீரந்துடித்தல், v. noun. Quivering of the body, supposed to occur of itself in case of the sickness of a relative, also at the sight of one suffering, or through anger. துடியானவன், appel. n. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. The Maldive islands, said to have been, in ancient times, one island. மகாதேவன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Siva --as supreme, சிவன். 3. Epithet of god among various votaries, தெய்வம். 4. A god of the sea or waters, வருணன். மழையும்பிள்ளைப்பேறும்மகாதேவருக்குந்தெரியாது. Rain and child-birth are mysterious even to the gods. மகாதேவி, s. Parvati as the great goddess, பார்வதி. மகாதோஷம், s. Very great sin. மகாதோரை, s. A large number, ஓரெண். மகாத்தியாகம், s. Mahab'harat, the great epic poem; so called from its having outweighed the four Vedas, when weighed by the Rishis in a scale. புகாபுண்ணியம், s. Great religious merit. மகாபுத்திமான், s. Great enjoyment, enjoyment of affluence and luxury. மகாப்பிரகாசசத்தி, s. Mica, as அப் பிரகம். மகாப்பிரதோஷம், s. The thirteenth evening from the new and full moon, a time in which the Saivas, expect particular benefits from their religious exercises. See பிரதோஷம். மகாப்பிரபு, s. A very great, illustrious, or holy person. மகாப்பிரபுக்கள்சபை, s. House of lords. (adopted.) மகாப்பிரளயம், s. The great deluge which destroys the universe at the end of each great Kalpa See பிரளயம். 2. (fig.) A number, ஓரெண். மகாமகம், s. [com. மாமகம்--colloq. மாமா ங்கம்.] The occurrence of the full moon in or about the asterism, மகம், with other astronomical incidents, which occur once in twelve years. Peculiar rites in honor of Siva, are then performed. The time is auspicious for bathing, especially at Combaconum. மகாமண்டபம், s. An open large court of temple, the fourth from the shrine. மகாமந்திரம், s. [com. மூலமந்திரம்.] An appropriate name of Deity. மகாமந்திரமூர்த்திகள், s. A class of souls of a superior order, consisting of seventy-five millions. Of these, thirty-five millions attain liberation when the work of creation is finished. மகாமந்திரி, s. The prime minister. மகாமாயி--மகாமாரி, s. [com. மகமாயி.] A name of Durga, துர்க்கை. மகாமாயை, s. Mother of the king of the Asuras, சூரபன்மன்தாய். 2. As மாமாயை. மகாமிருகம், s. The elephant, யானை. மகாமுத்திரை, s. One of the symbols of the Yoga system, யோகமுத்திரை. மகாமுனி--மகாரிஷி, s. A great Muni. 2. A name of Agastya, அகஸ்தியன். மகாமேரு--மகமேரு, s. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. A charioteer commanding 11, chariots; any warrior of note, 11,--ந்தேருக்குத்தலைவன். மகாராசன்--மகாராசா, s. A great king, a monarch. W.p. 651. MAHARAJA. 2. An epithet of Kuvera. 3. One who possesses elephants, யானைகட்டிவாழ்பவன். மகாராட்டிரம், s. [Tamil மராடம்.] The original Maharatta country. See தேசம். 2. The Maharatta language. See பாஷை. மகாலட்சுமி, s. The great Lukshmi, goddess of felicity. மகாலயம், s. The world of Brahma, பிரமனுலகம். 2. A temple, கோயில். மகாலுத்தன்--மகாலோபி, s. A very great niggard. மகாலோகம்--மகலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds. See மேலுலகு. மகாவராகம், s. Vishnu in the hogincarnation, விஷ்ணு. மகாவற்புதம், s. A large number, ஓர் பேரெண்; [ex அற்புதம்.] மகாவாக்கியம், s. A mystic word in the Vedanta, a religious formule among the Saivas and others. மகாவிசுவம்--மகாவிஷீவம்--மகாவிடு வம், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s. [in mythol. also மகேந்திரபுரி.] A famous town said to have been inhabited by the Asuras but afterwards submerged in the southern ocean, ஓர்நகரம். மகேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். மகைசுவரியம், s. [also மகதைசுவரியம்.] Great opulence. மகோததி, s. The ocean, the great sea, கடல்; [ex உததி, sea.] 2. [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம். Compare அத்தோதயம். மகோதரம், s. Dropsy of the belly, ascites, ஓர்நோய். 2. A large belly, பெரு வயிறு; [ex உதரம், belly.] மகோதரன், s. mūccu (p. 361) Respiration, breath, சுவாசம. (c.) 2. Life, strength, ஆண்மை. நீயொருமூச்சுப்போடு. Give an impulse, used in pounding. ஏன்ஒரேமூச்சாய்வாசிக்கிறாய். Why are you reading in one breath? அவர்கள்முழுமூச்சாய்வந்துவிழுந்தார்கள்.....They rushed on breathlessly. எனக்குமூச்சடைக்கிறது. I have difficulty of breathing. மூச்சடக்க, inf. To draw in the breath. மூச்சடைப்பு--மூச்சுத்தாங்குதல், v. noun. [also மூச்சடைப்பான்.] Difficult and short respiration, asthma, ஓர்நோய். மூச்சன், s. [prov.] A powerful, strong person, பாலாஷ்டிகன். மூச்சுக்காட்ட, inf. To shew signs of courage. மூச்சுக்காட்டாமற்போ. Go without making the least noise. மூச்சுக்குத்து, s. A kind of gout. மூச்சுப்பறிய, inf. To escape, as air, or breath. மூச்சுப்பிடிக்க, inf. [v. noun. மூச்சுப்பி டிப்பு.] To stop, or suppress the breath; [also மூச்சுப்பொறுக்க.] 2. To be short of breath. மூச்சுப்பேச்சு, s. [com. பேச்சுமூச்சு.] Talk. [in the negative.] Absolute silence. அந்தஊரிலேஅதைக்குறித்துப்பேச்சுமூச்சில்லை.... There is no talk of that affair in the village. மூச்சுவாங்க--மூச்செடுக்க, inf. To fetch breath, to inhale. மூச்சுவிட-மூச்செறிய, inf. [v. noun. மூ ச்செறிவு.] To breathe, to respire. மூச்சுவிடாமற்பேசுகிறான். He speaks without drawing his breath. மூச்சொடுங்க--மூச்சடங்க, inf. To breathe short, as when dying. 31) *
