To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

To be conceived, to be formed--as conception, கருப்பந்தங்க. கருத்தரிக்க, inf. To conceive, to be impregnated--as animals in general. கருத்தெரியாதவன், s. An unwise man. கருநூல், s. A treatise on enchantment. கருப்பை, s. The matrix, the womb. கருப்பொருள், s. The second class of பொருள், which treats of the beings, things, &c., peculiar to different countries. They are of fourteen kinds from gods down to the employments of men, அந்தந்தநிலங்களைச்சார்ந்தபொருள். See பொருள். கருமாரி, s. Extremity, difficulty in child-birth, பிரசூதவேதனை. கருமாரிப்பட்டை, s. A bark used medicinally in difficult child-birth. கருவழிக்க, inf. To destroy the f&oe;tus, to cause abortion, கருப்பமழிக்க. கருவழிய, inf. To perish--as the f&oe;tus, to miscarry, to suffer abortion. கருவழிவு, v. noun. miscarriage, abortion, கருப்பஅழிவு. கருவறிய, inf. To come to years of discretion. கருவறிந்தவன்--கருவாளி--கருவு ள்ளவன், s. An ingenious person, a genius, ஊகித்தறிபவன். கருவறுக்க, inf. To exterminate a family, &c., to ruin one's property,அடி யோடுகெடுக்க. கருவாமுப்பு, s. Salt-petre, வெடி யுப்பு. கருவிரிய, inf. To ear, to shoot into ears, கதிர்விரிய. கருவிரிந்தபயிர், s. The earing corn. கருவுயிர்க்க, v. n. To bring forth young either human or brute, ஈன. கருவுளமைப்பு, s. The six things incident to sentient beings on assuming corporeal forms, கருவில்நியமிப்பு, viz.: 1. பெறுதல் or பேறு, getting, gain. 2. இழத்தல் or இழவு, losing or loss. 3. இன் பம், pleasure. 4. பிணி or இடையூறு, disease, affliction, mishap, &c. 5. மூப்பு, old age. 6. சாக்காடு, death. [com.] A sharpwitted man, கூர்மையாயிருப்பவன். 2. A man of guile, வஞ்சகன். கருக்கானவாள், s. A sharp sword. கருக்கிட, inf. To whet, edge, sharpen. கருக்குக்கஷாயம், s. A decoction, &c. கருக்குச்சுருட்டு, s. Guilefulness, crookedness of mind, வஞ்சகம். கருக்குப்பீர்க்கு, s. A kind of creeper whose fruit is used for curry. கருக்குப்போட, inf. To make a decoction of drugs. கருக்குவராகன், s. A new pagoda or coin on which the figures are well defined. கருக்குவாய்ப்பட, inf. To be rough edged. கருக்குவாளி--கருக்காமரம், s. The name of a tree, கருக்குவரய்ச்சி, with a dark jagged leaf, serrated, ஓர்மரம், Zizyphus trinervius. (Rott.) கருக்குவாள், s. A sword with a sharp edge, கருக்கானவாள். கருக்குவேலை, s. Work in stone or metal, bass-relief, raised-work, fret-work. கருக்குள்ளது, appel. n. That which is sharp-edged. கருக்கெடுபட, inf. To have the edge of an instrument removed by use. 125)

Actions of a previous birth, good or evil, entailed on the soul and resulting in the enjoyments and sufferings of the present or a future state, fate, destiny, முன்வினை. 3. (5.) ஆகருட ணம், summoning or invoking a spirit or absent person visibly into one's presence. (6.) வித்துவேடணம், excitment to hatred. (7.) பேதனம், causing separation, dissension, discord. A respectable caste of fishermen, வலைஞர். கரையாளன், s. One of the proprietors of a village. கரையிட, inf. To assign portions of land to be cultivated. கரையேற--கரைசேர, inf. To get ashore, to land, to be landed, கரையைய டைய. 2. To be rescued from the sea of transmigrations, to be saved, நற்கதியடை ய. 3. To attain an object of desire, விரும்பியதடைய. 4. To rise from distress, sickness, indigent circumstances, &c., to be re-established in life, to become thrifty after poverty, or embarrassment, வருத்தத்தினின்றுநீங்க. 5. To get well married--as a poor girl, வாழ்வடைய. கரையேற்ற, inf. To save, rescue, restore, redeem, கதியிற் சேர்க்க. 2. To raise one from indigence, reinstate, or reestablish one in good circumstances, துன் பத்தினின்றுநீக்க. 3. To emancipate from births, பிறவியொழிக்க. 4. As an auxiliary to other verbs, கொள் denotes, continuation, certainly, &c., of the action, and that the fruit of it reverts to the agent-as படித்துக்கொள்ளுகிறான். He continues to study, குதிரையைவாங்கிக்கொண்டேன். I bought a horse for myself. The verb is generally found in composition with other words --as வாங்கிக்கொள்ள, பெண்கொள்ள, உட்கொள்ள, &c., and very rarely in the personal finite forms in common usage, except in the third meaning. கொள்வாருமில்லைகொடுப்பாருமில்லை.... There are none who receive, none who give. கொண்டிருந்துகுலம்பேசுகிறதா? Would it be proper to twit a family after you have taken a wife from it? கொண்டான், s. A husband, புருஷன். 2. A play as கொண்டல். See under கொண் டு, for other words. கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry, to convey; to take away. கொள்க, [obtative.] May take, accept, or may uderstand. உமதுசித்தத்தின்படிகொள்க. You may take it as you please. கொள்கலம், s. A vessel, a salver, a dish; a receptacle for sandal-paste, or other ointments, or for ornaments, &c., சாந்துமுதலியபெய்கலம். 2. A cup of palm leaf, or bamboo to eat from, பிழர. (சது.) A beggar's dish, இரப்போர்கலம். கொள்கை, v. noun. The act of taking, getting, &c. See, கொள், v. 2. Quality, nature, habit, state, குணம். 3. Liking, fondness, regard, attachment, intimacy, சினேகம். 4. Opinions, tenets, belief, கோ ட்பாடு. 5. Knowledge, instruction, அறிவு. அவருக்குமிவருக்குமிகுந்தகொள்கை. [prov.] They two are very intimate. கிழவியிவனோடேமிகுந்தகொள்கையாயிருக்கிறாள். The old woman is very fond of him. கொள்கொம்பு, s. A prop supporting vines. (R.) கொள்வனை--கொள்வனவு--கொள்வினை, v. noun. Buying, borrowing; taking receiving வியாபாரக்கொள்ளுகை. 2. Marrying a wife, பெண்கொள்ளுகை. கொள்வனைகொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Borrowing and lending. 2. Giving and receiving in marriage. 3. [vul. loc.] Taking, receiving; buying, borrowing, கொள்ளுகை. கொள்விலை--கொள்கிரயம், s. The first or prime cost, the sum paid for a thing exclusive of profit, &c., கொண்டவிலை. 2. [prov.] Purchase, purchased land or property, விலைக்குக்கொண்டது. 3. One of the three species of real property. See சீதனம் and பிதிரார்ச்சிதம். கொள்விலைக்காணி, s. [prov.] Land attained by purchase, as distinguished from lands by dowry and inheritance. கொள்விலைக்காரன், s. The purchaser of land, &c. கொள்வோன், s. One who buys, or one who accepts any thing. 2. (நன்.) a pupil, student, learner, கற்போன். கொள்ள, [adverbially.] While, when-as நான்வரக்கொள்ள, while I was coming. 2. Taking, receiving, obtaining, buying, &c. கொள்ளற்பாடு, [prov.] Estimation, worth, honor, மேன்மை. கொள்ளாதசெய்கை, s. A fragrantly wicked, unbearable act. கொள்ளாதசிறை, s. One assiduous as a slave--spoken of an affectionate, faithful wife, or a dependent. கொள்ளாதபுகழ், s. Unbounded praise. கொள்ளாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Excessiveness transcedency, pre-eminence in good or evil. 2. Disagreement, discordance, enmity, பகை. வாய்கொள்ளாப்பேச்சு. Language not proper to be used. கொள்ளார், s. Haters, enemies, பகை வர்.
