Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Wils. p. 474. NIRGUN'A. சத்துவகுணம், s. The first of the three principles, or properties in nature. 2. Nobleness of mind; magnanimity. 3. The exalted disposition of an ascetic's mind by which he disdains worldly delights, greatness, honors, &c. சற்குணம்--சுகுணம்--நற்குணம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)

A creeper with a very fragrant flower, a species of சண்ப கம். which see. கொடிச்சுற்றிக்கொண்டுபிறக்க, inf. To be born with the cord of the placenta round the neck--deemed ominous to the maternal uncle. கொடிச்சூரை, s. A creeper species of சூரை. கொடித்திரும்ப, inf. (c.) சித்தமிரங்க, inf. To condescend, to be pleased, to do a favor, &c. சித்தயோகம், s. [in astrol.] A conjunction of the lunar constellations with the days of the week and of the phases of the moon,-- not deemed very favorable; the twenty-first of the twenty-seven yogas, யோகமிருபத்தேழிலொ ன்று. 2. One of the three யோகம் neither favorable, nor unfavorable. See யோகம். சித்தலயம், s. Extinction of the will and identification of the soul with the Supreme, as obtained by the ascetic; [ex இலயம்.] சித்தவிலாசம், s. Increase of volitions or of yielding to desires after earthly objects--oppo. to சித்தலயம். சாத்திரசித்தம், s. The sentiment or meaning of the shastras. 2. Tenets, opinions, &c., inculcated in the shastras. திடச்சித்தம், s. A firm, resolute mind. 60) *

cuṟṟu (p. 198) கிறேன், சுற்றினேன், வேன், சுற்ற, v. n. To go or pass round, revolve, circulate, turn, வட்டமாயோட. 2. To go or move about here and there, wander, அலைய. 3. To take a circuitous or indirect course, சுற்றிப்போக. 4. To be circuitous, meander, wind about--as a river, road. &c., ஆறுமுதலியசுற்ற. 5. To whirl, spin round, turn about, இராட்டினஞ்சுற்ற. 6. To be giddy, be dizzy, தலைசுற்ற. 7. To be coiled, to curl round, to kink, to twine, நூன்முதலியசுற்ற. (c.) சுற்றியுஞ்சுகத்திலேபோ. Seek a good result even circuitously. சுற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To become coiled, entangled. See சுற்று, v. a. சுற்றிச்சுழற்றி, Gerund. (adverbially.) Altogether, ஒருமிக்க. சுற்றிச்சுற்றி, Gerund. ( used adverbially.) Round and round. 2. Circuitously. repeatedly--as திரும்பத்திரும்ப. சுற்றிச்சுற்றிப்பேச, inf. To talk in a round about way. சுற்றித்திரிய, inf. To go round about, perambulate. 2. To ramble or stroll about, to roam. சுற்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To have a cholic, சுற்றிவலிக்க. See சுற்று, v. a. சுற்றியடிக்க, inf. To whiffle, shift-as the wind. சுற்றியலைந்துதிரிய, inf. To ramble about. சுற்றியலைந்துபோக, inf. To take a circuitous course. சுற்றியாட, inf. To whirl in dancing. 2. To dance round the area. சுற்றியெடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To wave cakes, &c., round an idol, a new married couple, &c., to dispel fascinations. Compare திஷ்டிசுற்ற. சுற்றிவந்துகும்பிட, inf. To raise the hands and turn round towards the eight points, worshipping their guardians. 2. To worship with raised hands passing round a temple, &c. சுற்றிவர, inf. To pass round a temple in worship, singly, or in procession. 2. To pass about a village turning to the right, as in marriage processions, &c. சுற்றிவலிக்க, inf. As சுற்றிப்பிடிக்க. நாடோறும்வந்துசுற்ற, inf. To come for a thing day after day. 2. To hang about in order to steal, திருடப்பார்க்க. சுற்றிக்கொத்த, inf. tiri (p. 239) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், திரிய, v. n. To walk about, to wander, to ramble, to go here and there, to stray, to be unsettled, உழல. (c.) 2. To change, to vary, மாற. 3. To perish, அழிய. 4. To turn. to whirl; to revolve--as the heavenly bodies, உருள. 5. To be twisted; to be convolved, சுருள. 6. to revolve, as the soul in transmigrations, பிறவியிற்சுழல. 7. To vary or swerve from truth, மனங்கோண. 8. To be variegated, as a landscape, to be diversified, மாறுபட. 9. [with an infinitive preceding.] To be near or exposed to, as சாகத்திரிந்தேன், I was near dying. 1. Change, alteration, mutation, variation, diversity, வே றுபாடு. 2. [in gram.] Permutation, metathesis, &c., புணர்ச்சிவிகாரத்தொன்று. 3. One of the three obstacles to the attainment of heaven. See முத்திவிக்கினம். திரிபுக்காட்சி--திரிவுக்காட்சி, s. [in log.] Optical illusion, misconception in objects of sense; i. e. mistaking one thing for another, as a post for a thief, ஒன் றைமற்றொன்றாகமதித்தல். சொற்றிரிபு, s. Change in the form of a word, as of a gerund for an infinitive. பொருட்டிரிபு, Change of meaning, or compound terms having different meanings, according to the manner in which they are read or accented. திரிபுவிகாரம், s. [in gram.] The change of one letter for another. திரிபணி, s. A figure of speech, a metaphor, ஓரலங்காரம், as தாடகமலத்தானடந்து கட்குவளையானோக்கி, she walked with red lotus legs, and looked forth with குவளை flower eyes. 40)

tirumpu (p. 240) கிறேன், திரும்பினேன், வேன், திரும்ப, v. n. To turn, to turn back, to return, மடங்க. 2. To turn as the mind or will, மாற. 3. To be averted, as an evil; to abate, as a disease; to overcome, as poison, விலக. 4. To be proselyted, converted, as a person, மறுசமயத்திற்புக. 5. To decline, as the sun, சாய. 6. To veer or change, as the wind, மீள. 7. To turn, as an angle; to bend, as a road or river; to be refracted, as light, வளைய. 8. To retrograde, பின்னிட. teṉ (p. 257) adj. South, southern, தெற்குத் திசை. தென்கடல், s. The southern sea, தெற் குச்சமுத்திரம். தென்கயிலாயம், s. The southern Kaylasa, the feigned favorite abode of Siva. தென்கரை, s. A name for the town of Periacolom, as தென்கரைதாலுகா, (Govt. usage.) தென்கலை, s. Southern literature; i. e. Tamil, தமிழ். 2. As தென்கலையார். தென்கலைத்திருமண், s. A sacred earth used by தென்கலையார், in marking their foreheads,--Note. They extend the middle mark below the other two to the bridge of the nose. தென்கலையார், s. A sect of Vishnuvas who maintain diferent tenets from the வடகலையார். தென்கால்--தென்காற்று, s. The gentle south wind. தென்கிழக்கு--தென்கீழ், s. South-east. தென்கீழ்த்திசை, s. The south-east region. தென்கீழ்த்திசைப்பாலன்--தென்கீழ்த்தி சையிறை, s. The regent of the southeast, அக்கினிதேவன். தென்குமரி, s. A sacred river that disembogues itself near Cape Comorin. ஓர்நதி. 2. Cape Comorin named after the river. தென்கோடு, s. The southern horn of the crescent moon, the word for moon being understood. See வடகோடு. தென்சார்--தென்பக்கம், s. Southern side, parts or region, &c., தென்பரதம், s. One of the four கண் டம், as தென்பாரதம். தென்பாண்டி, s. The district south of Madura. See தமிழ். தென்பாரதம், s. The southern division of India. See பாரதம். தென்பாரிசம்--தென்பால், s. The southern side or region. தென்பாரிசத்தார், s. Inhabitants of the southern regions. தென்புலம், s. The region or world of the deceased, பிதிர்கள்வாழுமிடம். 2. A corn-field lying to the south. தென்புலத்தார், s. The manes or souls of the deceased, supposed to be in the south. தென்புறம், s. As தென்பக்கம். தென்பூமி, s. Southern parts of India, any part south of Mount Meru, மேரு வின்றென்பால். 2. The southern parts of the earth. தென்மதுரை, s. South Madura, as distinguished from வடமதுரை, north Madura, ஆலவாய். தென்மலை, s. The southern mountain Pothiya, supposed to be the residence of Agastia, பொதியம். 2. As சோலைமலை. தென்மலையாளம், s. South Travancore. தென்முகம், s. Facing the south, southern direction. தென்முனை, s. South pole. தென்மேல்--தென்மேற்கு, s. South-west. தென்மேற்றிசை, s. The south-west region. தென்மேற்றிசைப்பாலன், s. The regent of the south-west, நிருதி. தென்விதேகம், s. One of the nine divisions of the known continent. See கண் டம். தென்றமிழ், s. The Tamil language, as peculiar to the south, செந்தமிழ். தென்றல், s. The south wind, as தென் கால். (c.) 2. The wind of the farmer dewy season, முன்பனிபருவத்தின்காற்று. தென்றல்வீசுகிறது--தென்றலடிக்கிறது. The south-wind blows. தென்றல்திரும்புகிறது. The wind shifts to the south. தென்றல்முற்றிப்பெருங்காற்றாயிற்று. The gentle south wind has risen to a hurricane, i. e. a little affair has become a serious quarrel. தென்றற்றேரோன், s. Kama, whose chariot is the south wind, regarded, as favorable to love, காமன். தென்றி, s. South, தெற்கு. 2. The south-wind, தென்றல். (p.) தென்றிசை, s. South region. தென்றிசைக்கோன்-தென்றிசைப்பாலன், s. Yama, king of the southern region and god of death, இயமன். தென்றேசம், s. The southern region. தென்னன், s. A titular name of the Pandyan dynasty of Madura. தென்னிரேபதம், s. nimiru (p. 277) -நிமிர், கிறேன், நிமிர்ந்தேன், வேன், நிமிர, v. n. To become erect or straight; to be unbent, uncoiled; to stand upright; to raise or hold the head erect, உயர. 2. To grow high, to be lofty, to shoot up as a youth, or a tree, வளர. 3. (fig.) To be proud, affected, arrogant, மேட்டிமைசெய்ய. 5. To be bold, firm or decided, commonly in a good sense, இறுமாக்க. (c.) 6. To run, ஓட. 7. To be close, thick, crowded, நெ ருங்க. 8. To return as a planet from a retrograde motion, கிரகந்திரும்பிநடக்க. நிமிர்ந்துநில். Stand erect. வயிறுநிமிரப்பிடித்தான். He ate to the full. அவன்இங்கேநிமிர்ந்துபோட்டதுமில்லைகுனிந்தெடுத் ததுமில்லை. He neither stands erect here, nor stoops; i. e. has no place. நிமிர்ந்தஆள், s. A grown person. 2. A bold or proud man. நிமிர்ந்தநடை, s. [prov. நிமிர்ந்தகூறு.] Haughty or supercilious behavior, அகங் காரநடை. நிமிர்ந்தபார்வையாய்நடக்க, inf. To walk looking upwards, through pride or carelessness. நிமிர்ந்துகொள்ள, inf. To be firm in maintaining, denying, &c. நிமிர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand erect. 2. To assert one's right with courage, as நிமிர்ந்துகொள்ள. நிமிர்ந்துபார்க்க, inf. To look with the heat erect. 2. To regard. படைமுழுதும் அவன் நிமிர்ந்துபார்க்கக்காணாது... The whole army shrunk from his erect look. நிமிர்ந்துபோக, inf. To become full. நிமிர்வு, v. noun. Erection, straightening, வளைவுமாறுகை. கூனிமிர்தல், v. noun.
