அக்கினி
akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

அளவை
aḷvai (p. 33) s. Measure, a definite quantity, அளவு. 2. Bound, limit, எல்லை. 3. A measure, or thing to measure with, அளவுக்கருவி. 4. A medium of knowledge, காட்சிமுதலியபிரமாணங்கள். 5. The name of a logical work, அளவைநூல். 6. Day, நாள். There are eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence; viz.: 1. காட்சி, by the senses, especially the sight--by experiments, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிர மாணம். 2. அனுமானம், by inference, by drawing conclusions from what has been admitted or is supposed true--as நெருப்பிற்கு வியாப்பியம் புகையென்றறிதல், where smoke is, there is fire. 3. ஆகமம், by the testimony or assertions of great men, either orally or in writing, பெரியோர்வாய்ச்சொல். 4. அரு த்தாபத்தி, by deduction established from premises, அந்நியதாவநுபபத்தி--as இரவிலுணவி ல்லாமற் பகலுண்ணாதவனுக்குப் பருத்தல்கூடாதென் னுமுணர்ச்சி. 5. உவமானம், by similarity or likeness, comparison, மரை பசுப்போலென்னுமு ணர்ச்சி. 6. அபாவம், proof of non-existence-as முன்னில்லை, பின்னில்லை, முழுதுமில்லை, ஒன்றி ன்மற்றொன்றில்லை. 7. ஐதீகம், by traditional testimony--as இம்மாத்திற்பேயுளதென்பது, this tree is haunted by the devil. 8. சம்பவம், proof of co-existence--as ஆயிரத்தினூறுண்டெ னல், where a thousand is, there is a hundred. (p.) அளவையாகுபெயர், s. A metonymy in reference to measure, weight, number, &c. In Nannool, four kinds are given, எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், எடுத்தல ளவையாகுபெயர், முகத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், and நீட்டலளவையாகுபெயர். 15) *

kṭai (p. 88) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To churn, தயிர்கடைய. 2. To turn in a lathe, மரமுதலியனகடைய. 3. To form moulds on a wheel--as a brazier, தரா, செம் புமுதலியனகடைய. 4. To rub two sticks together till they ignite, தீக்கடைய. 5. To mash yams or other vegetable, &c., to a pulp with the bowl of a ladle, பருப்புமுதலிய னகடைய. கடைந்தமோரிலேவெண்ணெயெடுக்கப்பார்க்கிறான். He is trying to get butter from whey; i. e. he is too exacting, rigorous. கடைந்தவெண்ணெய்மோர்புகா. Butter produced by churning will not again be diffused through the milk. கடைகோல், s. Two sticks for kindling fire by attrition--commonly தீக்கடைகோல். கடைந்தகுமிழ், s. A turned knob. கடைந்தெடுத்தநெருப்பு, s. Fire produced by attrition. கடைமரம், s. A lathe, கடைகின் றமரம். கீரைகடைய, inf. To mash potherbs into a pulp. தயிர்கடைய, inf. To churn curds to produce butter. கடைச்சல்--கடைதல்--கடைவு, v. noun. Churning curds, தயிர்கடைகை. 2. kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. kṉlu (p. 102) --கனல், கிறேன், கனன்றேன், வேன், கனல, v. n. To be hot, to glow--as fire, fever, the sun in a slight degree, தீக் கனல. 2. To burn, எரிய. 3. To be angry, to be displeased, to show signs of anger, கோபிக்க. (p.) காய்ச்சல்கனன்றுகொண்டிருக்கிறது. There is a little fever (as when it begins or abates). கனறல், v. noun. Being hot, swift, கடுப்பு. 2. Anger, கோபம். கனற்சி, v. noun. Heat, glow, வெப் பம். 2. Anger, சினம். 41)
கனவு
kṉvu (p. 102) s. A dream, கனா. 2. Sleep, நித்திரை. 3. Stupor, drowsiness, bewilderment, மயக்கம். கனவிலுங்காக்காய்மலந்தின்னக்காணும். The crow even dreams of feeding on excrement. கனவிலுந்தீங்குநினையான். He will not think evil even in his dreams. கனவிலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will not falsify even in his dreams, he will not dream of falsifying. கனவிற்கண்டபொருள்கானலிற்கண்டபுனல். The substance of a dream is like the mirage of the arid desert. ஊமைகண்டகனவுபோல். Like the dreams of the dumb that cannot be disclosed-spoken of things improper or impossible to disclose. கனவின்பலன், s. The accomplishment of a dream. 2. The interpretation of a dream. கனவின்பலனைச்சொல்ல. To interpret dreams. கனவுகாண, inf. To dream. கனவுநிலையுரைத்தல், v. noun. The relation of dreams. கனவுநூல், s. கருக்கு
krukku (p. 96) கிறேன், கருக்கினேன் வே ன், கருக்க v. a. To burn, to tinder, கருகச் செய்ய. 2. To scorch, toast, fry, parch, to imbrown or darken by heat, to tan கறுப் போடவாட்ட, 3. To scorch corn; to tan the countenance, referring to the action of the sun, &c., தீக்க. 4. [vul.] To harass by rebukes, திட்ட. சாராயமீரலைக்கருக்கிப்போடும். Ardent spirits consume the liver. ஆளைக்கருக்கிப்போட்டார்கள். They have greatly harassed the person by reproofs. பத்தியத்துக்குகருக்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To fry or cook (food) and give it to a patient-as a proper diet. மனதைக்கருக்க, inf. To wound the feelings, to offend. கருக்கல், v. noun. The act of blackening. 2. [used as a substantive.] The evening twilight, dusk, அந்திநேரம். 3. [prov.] Rice in the field turned browm by the sun, காய்ந்தபயிர். 4. Darkness, obscurity, இருள். 5. Thin and imperfect grains in corn ears,பதர். கருக்கலிலேவந்தான். Rice somewhat injured. அமாவாசைக்கருக்கல், s. Great darkness as in a night of the new moon. 126)
கருமம்
krumm (p. 96) s. Act, action, moral actions involving future retribution, &c., கிரியை. 2. Actions of a previous birth, good or evil, entailed on the soul and resulting in the enjoyments and sufferings of the present or a future state, fate, destiny, முன்வினை. 3. Business, profession, occupation, attempt, essay, enterprise, தொழில். 4. Religious rites, duties, &c., stated, periodical, or otherwise, according to the rules of the shasters; moral duty, specific action, duty, obligation imposed by peculiarities of tribe or occupation, &c., வைதீகக்கிரியை. 5. Natural activity, self-moving energy, &c., இயற்கைச்சொல். 6. Religious actions --as connected with the hope of future recompense and as opposed to speculative religion--as explained in the Agamas, ஆகாயமிருகம். 7. [in grammar.] The object of actions, செயப்படுபொருள். 8. Magical enchantment of eight kinds, அஷ்டகருமம். (1.) வசியம். getting a person into one's own power, influence, &c. (2.) மோகனம், libidinous fascinations. (3.) தம்பனம், stopping, checking, restraining the powers of fire, the flowing of water, the ferocity of wild beasts, &c., making a spirit or person stand immovable in a place and depriving him on the power of speech, &c. (4.) உச்சா டனம், setting demons against one to ruin him by magical incantations, or dislodging them from persons or places. (5.) ஆகருட ணம், summoning or invoking a spirit or absent person visibly into one's presence. (6.) வித்துவேடணம், excitment to hatred. (7.) பேதனம், causing separation, dissension, discord. Heat, உஷ்டணம். கருமஒழுங்குபெருமைக்களவு, rectitude of his actions is the measure of a man's dignity. கருமவரிசையால். For the attainment of an object-- (நாலடி.) கருமகர்த்தா, s. A doer, actor, performer. கருமஞ்செய்பவன். 2. [in grammar.] The agent, காரியகர்த்தர். கருமகாண்டம், s. A division of the Vedas, வேதநூலினோர்பகுப்பு. 2. A medical treatise of Agustya. See கன்ம காண்டம். கருமகாண்டிகன், s. One who practises the rites and ceremonies inculcated in the Vedas, கிரியாகாண்டிகன். கருமங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. To be contracted, accumulated, laid up, &c.--as sins for retribution in future births, வி னைகட்டுப்பட. கருமசண்டாளன், s. A villian, a scoundrel, a rogue, an abandoned wretch. கருமசம், s. Vice, atrocity, தீவினை. Wils. p. 197. KARMAJA. கருமசாங்கரியம், s. Community of wives, promiscuous or indiscriminate cohabitation, ஐக்கம். கருமஞானம், s. Knowledge and skill religious exercise and ceremonies. கருமத்தலைவர், s. Royal fortunetellers, astrologers, conjurers, foretellers of future events, வருங்காரியஞ்சொல்வோர். கருமத்தலைவன், s. a superntendent. 2. A minister, அரசர்க்குத்துணைவன். கருமத்துரோகம், s. Treachery, treason, villainy துரோகஞ்செய்யல். கருமநிவிர்த்தி, s. Ceremonies performed to expiate the evil deeds of former births in times of disease, &c. கருமபந்தம்--கருமபந்தனம், s. The tie or vinculum, கருமபாசம், Which connects the actions of a former birth with their fruits in after transmigrations. Wils. p. 198. KARMMABANTHANA. கருமபாகை, s. One of the three parts of the Vedas, relating to daily ceremonial rites, வேதத்தின்பொருட்பாகுபாட் டிலொன்று. See ஞானபாகை, and அருத்தபாகை. கருமபூமி, s. The part of the earth deemed most sacred in which Hinduism prevails and religious rites are regularly performed, வினைசெய்தற்குரியபூமி. Wils. p. 198. KARMMAB'HUMI. 2. A place of cremation, சுடுகாடு. கருமபூமிக்குரிமை, s. The six occupations of men, viz.: 1. வரைவு, marriage. 2. தொழில். trade. 3. வித்தை, study. 4. வாணிபம், merchandize. 5. உழவு, husbandry. 6. சிற்பம், the arts. கருமமுடிக்க, inf. To accomplish one's purpose. 2. To perform duties, rites, ceremonies, &c., especially the daily rites and duties of religion. கருமவியாதி, s. A lingering and afflictive disease, the result as supposed of atrocious deeds in previous births. கருமவேதனை, s. The results, actions-as births, bodies, pleasures, pains, &c., கன்மவாதனை. கருமாதி, s. Prescribed funeral rites for deceased ancestors, அந்தியேட்டிமுதலிய சடங்கு. கருமாதிகாரன், s. A ruler, a governor, கருமத்தலைவன். கருமாதிசெய்ய, inf. To perform funeral rites. கருமாத்துமா, s. A heinous sinner, one who has accumulated evil deeds either in a previous birth or the present. Wils. p. 199. KARMMATMAN. கருமாந்தம்--கருமாந்தரம்--கருமாந் தியம், s. The end of a funeral ceremony which continues for sixteen days. Wils. p. 199. KARMMANTA, KARMANTARA. கருமானுட்டானம், s. Performance of exterior rites as distinguished from the contemplative or internal ritual of the silent worshipper. Wils. p. 199. KARMMANUSHTANA. கருமானுபவம், s. Suffering evils from sins of previous births, கருமப்பய னுகர்ச்சி. கருமி, s. A person engaged in the ordinary external rites of religion who has not risen to the higher degrees, கிரி யைசெய்பவன். 2. One who performs pujah regularly, பூசைசெய்பவன். 3. An atrocious sinner, தீவினையுடையோன். Wils. p. 199. KARMMI. கருமேந்திரியம், s. The organs of action, கன்மேந்திரியம், Wils. p. 199. காற்று
kāṟṟu (p. 107) s. Wind, a breeze, the air, atmosphere, வாயு. 2. The wind that passes downward, அபானவாயு. 3. The fifteenth lunar asterism, or nacshatra, சோதிநட்சத் திரம். 4. A ghost, an apparition, a spectre, an evil spirit.--Note. This word is from the third person neut. sing. of a symbolic verb from கால், air. காற்றுள்ளபோதே தூற்று. Winnow while the wind blows; i.e. attend to a thing at a favorable time. காற்றசைகிறது, The wind moves (after a lull). காற்றடங்கிற்று--காற்றமர்ந்தது. The wind has subsided. காற்றடிக்கிறது, The wind blows. 2. The storm beats. காற்றருந்த, inf. To feed on wind--as snakes. 2. [vul.] To be gaping, listless, idle. காற்றாடவைக்க, inf. To air a thing; to expose it to the wind. காற்றாடி, s. A wind-whirl, a child's toy, கறங்கு. 2. A paper kite, காற்றாடிப்பட் டம். 3. (fig.) A changeable person, a waverer, நிலையிலி. காற்றாடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cool, to refresh one's self. காற்றின்சகாயன், s. Fire, lit. the helper of wind; that which invites wind for winnowing, as a fire. காற்றுக்கழிய--காற்றுப்பறிய, inf. To break wind. காற்றுக்காலம், s. The windy season. காற்றுக்கிளம்பிற்று. The wind has sprung up or risen. காற்றுக்கிளம்பவில்லை. No wind rises. காற்றுக்குமறைவிடம். A shelter from the wind. காற்றுச்சங்கை, s. Possession by a demon. காற்றுத்திரும்பிவிட்டுது--மாறிவிட்டுது. The wind has changed. காற்றுநாள், s. The fifteenth lunar asterism, சோதிநாள். காற்றுப்போகிறது, The air is escaping. காற்றுமுந்துநாள், s. The sixteenth lunar asterism, விசாகநாள். காற்றுமோதுகின்றது, The wind beats or puffs. 2. The monsoon is set in. காற்றுவாக்கு, s. [prov.] Leeward--used when a current of offensive effluvia is conveyed to one by the wind--as by a fisher-woman in passing, &c., காற்றுப் பக்கம். 2. Neglect of duty, சோம்பல். 3. Random, chance, கண்டபாடு. காற்றுவீசுகின்றது, The wind blows. காற்றெழும்புகிறது. The wind rises. காற்றொதுக்கு, s. A shelter from the wind, காற்றடைப்பு. காற்றோட்டி, s. A kind of shrub yielding bitter fruit of an unpleasant smell, said to expel flatulency. It is fried and eaten on some fasts as a mode of selfmortification, ஓர்முட்செடி, Obtuse-leaved hibiscus. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. ஊதைக்காற்று--பனிக்காற்று, s. A cold wind, in the dewy season. எதிர்காற்று--எதிர்க்காற்று, s. A contrary wind. கீழ்காற்று, s. East wind. குளிர்காற்று, s. A cold wind. சிறுகாற்று, s. A gentle wind. சுழல்காற்று--சூறைக்காற்று, s. A whirlwind. சுழிக்காற்று, s. A whirl-wind, limited to a small space, and tearing up trees, &c., that stand in its way. தீக்காற்று, s. A scorching, blasting wind. தென்காற்று, s. South wind. நச்சுக்காற்று, s. A noxious air, miasma --as in time of epidemics. நல்லகாற்று, s. A favorable wind. பெருங்காற்று, s. A strong or violent wind. மேல்காற்று, s. West wind. வடகாற்று, s. குணம்
kuṇam (p. 118) s. Quality, attribute, property, பண்பு. 2. Disposition, temper, nature, தன் மை. 3. Good quality, moral or physical; proper temperament, virtue, நற்குணம். 4. Attribute, perfection, excellence--as of a deity, இலட்சணம். 5. Grace, beauty--as of a style or composition; merit, freedom from fault or defect--opposed to குற்றம், மேன்மை. 6. Wholesomeness, healthfulness, சுகம். 7. Soundness of intellect; normal state of the mental feelings, சொஸ்த புத்தி. 8. Indication, symptoms--as of a disease, வியாதியின்குறி. 9. Color--as a quality, நிறம். 1. Smoothness, சீர்மை. 11. Properties; functional powers or principles in nature, operative in all sentient beings; the sourses of the dispositions, &c., தத்துவம். 12. Wils. p. 291. GUN'A. 16. A water-pot, a pitcher--as குடம். குணத்தைமாற்றக்குருவில்லை. No guru can change the temper. குணத்தோடேகேள். Hear me with a right spirit and patience. குணநாடிகுற்றமுநாடி. Having examined the excellencies and faults--as of a style, a speech, &c. குணமதுகைவிடேல். Hold to what is good and proper; cease not to show a good disposition. குணமென்னுங்குன்றேறிநின்றார்வெகுளிகணமேயுங் காத்தலரிது. It is hard to divert, even for a moment, the anger of those who stand upon the mountain of virtue; i. e. who excel virtue. (குறள்.) அதிலுமிதுகுணம். This is better than that. அவனுக்குத்தாய்தந்தைகுணம்பிடிபடுகிறது. His parents' disposition and temper begin to be visible in him. குணகுணி, s. [in gram. and log.] Attribute and subject--as in செந்தாமரை, where செம்மை is the attribute, குணம், and தாமரை the subject, குணி. குணகுணிப்பெயர்கள், s. [in gram.] Abstract noun and subjective noun. (நன்.) குணக்ஞன்--குணஞ்ஞன், s. A pleasant, good-natured, agreeable person; one of an excellent disposition, நற்குணமுள் ளவன். Wils. p. 291. GUN'AG'NA. குணக்குன்று, s. A virtuous man; lit. a mountain of excellent qualities. குணக்கேடு, s. Bad temper, bad disposition; disobliging, unkind, கெட்டகுணம். 2. Fatal symptoms in disease, அசாத்தியக் குறி. குணக்கேடன்--குணங்கெட்டவன்--கு ணமில்லாதவன், s. An ill-natured person. குணங்காட்ட, inf. To exhibit natural characteristic qualities, dispositions or propensities. 2. To betray symptoms-as diseases; to indicate good or bad weather--as seasons. 3. To betray mean descent, low caste, &c., by mean behavior. குணங்குறி, s. Disposition, features, characteristics, குணமுங்குறியும். குணங்குறியறிய, inf. To know one's disposition and character. குணங்குறியுள்ளவன், s. A man of good disposition, and other good characteristics. குணசந்தி, s. [in gram.] A form of combining words of Sanscrit origin-as சுர and இந்திரன், make சுரேந்திரன், வடமொ ழிச்சத்தியிலொன்று. குணசாலி, s. A good-natured man or woman; one of an excellent disposition. குணசீலன், s. One abounding in excellent qualities. குணசுபாவம்--குணப்பிரகிருதி, s. Natural disposition. குணஷ்டை, s. Delinquency, defect, flaw, குணதோஷம். 2. Difficulty, trouble, தொந்தரை. குணத்தன்மை, s. [in rhet.] Description of qualities, one of the four subdivisions of தன்மையலங்காரம். குணத்திரயம், s. To be reconciled, இணங்க. குணத்தொகை, s. See பண்புத்தொகை. குணத்தொனி, s. The twang or sound of a bow-string. குணநிதி, s. A benevolent, kind person, நற்குணநிறைந்தவன். 2. the Deity, கடவுள். குணபத்திரன், s. The Deity, கடவுள். 2. The name of the preceptor and guru of மண்டலவன் the author of Nighandu. 3. Argha, அருகன். குணபேதம், s. Change of disposition for the worse, degeneracy, குணவேற்றுமை. 2. Unfavorable symptoms in a disease, வியாதிவேற்றுமைக்குணம். 3. Abnormal state of the mental powers--as idiocy, insanity, &c.; derangement, மாறுபாடான குணம். அவன்குணம்பேதித்திருக்கிறது. He is changed for the worse. குணப்பட, inf. To come to a right state, temper, disposition, &c.; to be changed for the better, to become tractable, docile, சீர்ப்பட. 2. To recover from sickness, to get well, சுகமடைய. 3. To improve --as crops, &c., to recover strength, to grow, to thrive, திறப்பட. 4. To reform, to amend in morals, to improve in disposition, character or habits, நடைதிருந்த. 5. [in Christian usage.] To be converted, to repent, to be penitent, மனந்திரும்ப. குணப்படுத்த, inf. v. a. To improve, to make better, to correct, to reform, to restore to a good state, to health, &c.; to remedy, சீர்திருத்த. 2. To convert, மனந்திரும்பச்செய்ய. குணப்பட்டவன், s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. Ill nature, bad temper or disposition, குணக்கேடு. 2. Ill success, பயனின்மை. 3. Unfavorable signs in disease, &c., அசாத்தியம். குணப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities; abstract nouns; denotative nouns signifying attributes only--as கரு மை, அழகு--opposed to குணிப்பெயர்; பண்புப் பெயர். 2. Names either concrete or connotating, derived from abstractnouns --as கரியன், அழகன். குணமணி, s. One of an excellent disposition. குணமறிய, inf. To know one's disposition. 2. To understand or ascertain the symptoms of a disease. குணமாக்க, inf. v. a. To cure, heal; to restore to health. 2. To reform, to amend, to correct. குணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be whole, well, sound; to be well-conditional. 2. To be gratifying, pleasing, palatable. குணம்மாற, inf. To change--as temper, disposition, character, symptoms, either for the better or worse. குணமுங்குற்றமும், s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. One whose benevolence is like the sea; [ex இரத்தினாகரம்.] குணவதி, s. A very good natured person. Wils. p. 292. GUN'AVATI. குணவந்தன்--குணவான், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Freedom from all properties, குணங்கடந்துநிற்கை. குணாதீதன், s. God, He who is above all attributes; He whose attributes and perfections transcend our comprehension, கடவுள். Wils. p. 292. GUN'ATEE'TA. குணாலயன், s. The deity--as the seat and source of all perfections, கடவுள். இனியகுணம், s. A pleasant temper or disposition. நிர்க்குணன், s. The deity--as void of all properties, கடவுள். Wils. p. 474. NIRGUN'A. சத்துவகுணம், s. The first of the three principles, or properties in nature. 2. Nobleness of mind; magnanimity. 3. The exalted disposition of an ascetic's mind by which he disdains worldly delights, greatness, honors, &c. சற்குணம்--சுகுணம்--நற்குணம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)
