amṭṭu (p. 19) கிறேன், அமட்டினேன், வேன், அமட்ட, v. a. To reprimand, upbraid, அதட்ட. 2. To inveigle, entrap, ensnare, சிக்குப்படுத்த. 3. To hector, bully, overpower by sophistry, உறுக்க. 4. To move tiles, &c., புரட்ட. 5. To overcome one, as sleep, மேற்கொள்ள. 6. v. n. To wabble, turn aside, be unsteady as a bench with uneven legs, புரள. என்னைத்தூக்கமமட்டுகிறது. Sleep overcomes me. அமட்டு--அமட்டுகை, v. noun. Threatening, threat, menace. 8)

arcu (p. 23) --அரசமரம், s. A tree-the Ficus religiosa, Peepul, or poplarleaved fig-tree--forming one of the nine kinds of wood used in burnt offerings, ஓர்மரம். (See சமித்து.) Its seed is used for medicinal purposes. அரசாணிக்கால், s. A bough of this tree, which together with others from the கலியாணமுருக்கு, (or erythrina,) &c. is fixed between two of the interior posts of the marriage pandal, round which the parties pass, performing particular ceremonies. அரசிலை, s. The leaves of the அரசு. 2. The figure of a leaf as branded on beasts, &c., அரசிலைக்குறி. அரசிலைத்தூக்கம்--அரசிலைத்தொங் கல், s. Hangings, resembling the அரசு leaves. கொடியரசு, s. A different species of Ficus. பூவரசு, s. The portia tree, பூப் பரத்தி, Thespesia populnea, L. ஆற்றரசு, s. Another species of Ficus growing in the vicinity of rivers. 2)

āṉi (p. 44) s. June--the month, ஓர்மாதம். 2. (p.) The eighteenth Nakshattra, கேட்டை. 3. The nineteenth lunar mansion, மூலம். 4. The twenty-first lunar mansion, உத்திராடம். 5. The name of a river in the Madura district, which overflows in the month of June, பொருந்தநதி. 6. (திவா.) A tender leaf of the palm, cut off, வெட்டுக்குருத்து. ஆனித்திருமஞ்சனம், s. A sacred bathing or anointing of the idol at Chillumbrum. celebrated in the eighth lunar mansion in the month of June. ஆனித்தூக்கம், s. [prov.] Calms in the month of June. 15) *

kātu (p. 104) s. Ear, செவி. 2. The eye of a needle, ஊசியின்காது. The pan of a gun, துப்பாக்கிக்காது. 4. The bottom of a tobacco leaf near the stem, (See சோணை.) 5. The top of an ola bond, as far as the hole through which it is filed; also the stamped part of an indenture or bond, which is nipped off, when the bond becomes null and void, உடன்படிக்கையின்காது. 6. Eye of an umbrella wire, which plays round the whale bone, குடைக்கம்பியின்காது. 7. The ear of a machine or vessel--as இராட்டினக்காது. 8. A small wedge to hold a tenon, handle or peg in its place, இறுக்கலாப்பு. காதுக்கிட்டால்முகத்துக்கழகு. Rings, &c., put in the ear are ornaments to the face. காதுங்காதும்வைத்தாற்போல். With the utmost secrecy, ear to ear, &c. எனக்குக்காதுகேளாது. I am deaf. காதடி, s. [vul. காதவடி.] The back part of the cheek, செவியடி. காதடைப்பு, v. noun. Deafness occasioned by a fall, blow, disease, &c. காதணி, s. An ear-ornament; of this there are sixteen kinds: viz., கடிப் பிணை, கம்பி, கன்னப்பூ, கன்னாவதங்கம், குணுக்கு, குண்டலம், குழை, கொட்டை, செவிமலர், தாட ங்கம், தூக்கம், தொங்கல், தோடு, மஞ்சிகை, வல் லிகை, வேடம். காதற--காதறுந்துபோக, inf. To have the perforated part of the ear cut or torn off. காதறுக்க, inf. To rend the ear by tearing off the ear-rings. 2. To cancel a bond, commonly by mutilating it. காதறுத்தகூலிகைமேலே. Tearing the ear and getting booty; i. e. doing injustice and getting money. காதறுப்பான், s. A sore that appears round the ear, காதைச்சுற்றிவரும் இரணம். காதறை, s. One whose ear has been cut off, or mutilated. 2. The cavity of the ear. காதற்றமுறி, s. A cancelled ola bond. காதார, adv. With one's own ear. காதாரக்கேட்க, inf. To hear with one's own ears. காதாரக்கேட்டசாட்சி, s. An ear-witness. காதிலேசொல்ல, inf. To whisper in the ear. காதிலேயடிபட, inf. To be uttered in one's hearing. காதிலேயோத, inf. To whisper in the ear. 2. To initiate a disciple by whispering a மந்திரம் in the ear. 3. To give private advice. காதிலேவிழ, inf. To reach the ears, to be heard. காதுகடிக்க, inf. To whisper, to buzz in the ear. காதுகுத்த, inf. To bore, perforate or pierce the ear. நீயெனக்குக்காதுகுத்துகிறாயா. Do you pierce my ear? (Do you teach me?) காதுகுளிர, inf. To be gratifying to the ear--as good news, a good voice, sweet music, &c. காதுகேளாதவன், s. A deaf man. காதுகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to hearken, to listen, to give attention. என்சொல்லுக்குக்காதுகொடுத்தான். He has given ear to my words. காதுக்கின்பமான, Pleasing to the ear. காதுக்குடைச்சல், s. An itching, tingling sensation in the ear. காதுக்குத்து--காதுநோய், s. Ear-ache. காதுக்குறும்பி, s. Ear-wax, cerumen. காதுச்சோணை--காதுத்தண்டு, s. The lobe of the ear. காதுதூர, inf. To close the perforation of the ear. காதுத்துவாரம்--காதுத்துளை s. A perforation or hole in the ear intended for jewels. காதுப்பூ, s. A flower-shaped ear-ornament, for females. காதுப்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A small kind of centipede, said to be very dangerous if it get into the ear, செவிப்பாம்பு. காதுமடல், s. The gristles of the ear, காதின் இதழ். காதுமந்தம், s. Dullness of hearing, காதடைப்பு. காதுமந்தன், s. A person dull of hearing. காதுமுருத்து, s. [prov.] The hard gristles of the ear. காதுவளர்க்க, inf. To promote the proper growth of the lobe of the ear for wearing jewels. காதுவிடாய், s. Weakness or lassitude in hearing, occasioned by hunger or sickness. காதுவெட்ட--காதுநறுக்க--காதுகிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To tear or nip off the stamped part of an ola bond, or otherwise to mutilate it as an indication of its being cancelled, உடன்படிக்கையின் காத றுக்க. காதெழுச்சி, s. A sore in the ear, கா தில் வரும் ஓர்நோய். காதைநெறிக்க, inf. To prick up the ears. காதைப்பொத்த, inf. To stop the ear. காதோதி, s. A malicious whisperer. காதோலை, s. An ear-ornament, often a rolled ola, colored red; used also to enlarge the perforation, whence the name, காதுக்கிடும் ஓலை.--Note. A person is considered naked with nothing in the ear. இல்லிக்காது, s. Ears with the hole very small--opposed to தொன்னைக்காது. கீழ்க்காது, s. The lower part of the ear. சோணைக்காது--சோணை பெருத்த காது, s. Large ear-laps, not perforated. தொள்ளைக்காது--வடிகாது--வார்காது, s. Ears with the hole much enlarged. மேற்காது, s. The upper part of the ear. வடுகக்காது, s. Large ear-laps artificially made. 23)

To give opportunity to sleep--as a disease in time of convalescence. 2. To faint or become dull --as a person in the height of disease. காற்றுத்தூக்கங்கொள்ளுகின்றது. The wind is dying away. தூக்கம்பிடிக்க, inf. To be drowsy, to be afflicted with sleepiness. தூக்கம்விட, inf. To put up hangings, curtains, festoons, &c., to make ornamental hanging work in metal, masonry, carving, &c., 2. To rouse from sleep, swooning, &c., to revive. 7)

To charm, fascinate, allure, attract, மயக்க. 5. To deceive, circumvent, misrepresent--as in selling goods, வஞ்சிக்க. 6. To menace, bully, hector, threaten, in order to affect an object, அமட்ட. போசனம்பண்ணினபின்பு பகட்டிவாந்தி பண்ணி னான். After he has eaten he loathed, and vomited, the food. தூக்கம்பகட்டுகிறது. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. The five operations performed by five பஞசகர்த்தாக்கள். See ஐந் தொழில், கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகுரோசஎல்லை, s. The distance of five calls of குரோசம், around Benares, within which no foreign religionist, or other unclean person, should come. பஞ்சகோசம், s. The five sheaths of the soul. See கோசம். பஞ்சகோணம், s. A pentagon. See ஐங்கோணம். பஞ்சகோலம், s. The mixture of five spices, சுக்கு, திப்பிலி, திப்பிலிமூலம், செவ்வியம், and சித்திரமூலம்; [ex Kola. pepper.] பஞ்சகௌடம், s. The five divisions of Bengal or the கௌடம் country. See கௌடம். பஞ்சகௌவியம், The five products of the cow, used in ceremonial purifications, viz. milk, curds, ghee, urine and dung, ஆனிடத்தைந்து. பஞ்சகௌவியம்கூட்டித்தெளித்தல். Mixing the five ingredients and sprinkling the the floor, &c.--Note. The same mixture is administered to the woman after child-birth; also sprinkled on the child at the time of purification. பஞ்சகொ?வியப்பிராசினம். Eating the above compound as a purification. பஞ்சசத்தி, s. The five saktis. See சத்தி. பஞ்சசயனம், s. The five kinds of beds. See சயனம். பஞ்சசிகை, s. [in politics.] The five means of accomplishing one's object; 1. மித்திரபேதம், sowing discord among friends; 2. சுகிர்லாபம், associating with equals; 3. சக்திவிக்கிரகம், associating with a foe and ruining him; 4. அர்த்தநாசம், spending one's property to gain an object; 5. அசம்பிரெட்சியம், acting without inquiry, examination, &c. பஞ்சதந்திரக்கதை, s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The five vital airs constituting life--commonly reckoned ten. See வாயு. பஞ்சமகதி, s. [in Hindu astron.] The table of the moon's given longitudes from apogee and daily motions for two hundred and fortyeight days. பஞ்சாங்குலம், s. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s. Five phenomena of the heavens constantly recurring in connexion with the planets; regarded as exerting planetary influence of an unpropitious character taken into account in astrological computation, viz.: 1. தூமம், smaoke; 2. விதிபாதம், one of twentyseven astrological yogas; 3. வில் or இந்திரவில், rainbow; 4. பரிவேடம், halo; 5. சேது, the descending node. பஞ்சார்க்கதோஷம், s.
