One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. I am unable to proceed further (I am altogether exhausted). இனியெங்கேபோவாய்? Whither will you go next? What further resource is left you? இனியென்னசெய்வாய்? What can you do further? இனிவேண்டாம். It is needed no longer, or no more is required. பண்டறியேன்கூற்றென்பதனையினியறிந்தேன்.... Formerly I knew not, but now I know who Yama is. (குறள்.) 46)

iyamaṉ (p. 48) s. Yama the god of death, regent of the south, and king of hell, (நரகம்.) the place of his capital, in which he sits in judgment on departed souls, sending the good to Swerga and the wicked to Naraka. In the latter there are 28,, divisions appropriated to different classes, according to their respective demerits. He is figuratively described as devouring souls for food. He takes the buffalo for his vehicle; and for weapons, the battle-axe, club and cord, நமன்; [ex யம, to stop, restrain.] Wils. p. 681. YAMA. 2. [Med. usage.] One of the two poisonous fangs of snakes, பரம்பினச்சுப்பற்களி லொன்று. இயமகணம்--இயமகிங்கரர்--இய மதூதர்--இயமபடர். s. The messengers of Yama, நமன்றூதர். இயமதூதி, s. One of the lower poisonous fangs of a snake. இயமலோகம், s. The place of departed souls, the purgatory of the Hindus--the kingdom of Yama. 3) *

uṇmai (p. 59) s. Being, existence, entity, (opposed to இன்மை) உள்ளது. 2. Natural or intrinsic quality, essense, nature, இயல்பு. (p.) 3. Sincerity, honesty, probity, fidelity, uprightness, faithfulness, veracity, reality, fact, யதார்த்தம். 4. Certainty, ascertainment, மெய். 5. Oath, abjuration, சத்தி யம். 6. (p.) Destiny or entailment of actions issuing in joys and sorrows, ஊழ். 7. Wisdom, right knowledge, அறிவு. உண்மையானுண்டிவ்வுலகு. By the existence (of kindness, favor, politeness) the world is sustained. (குறள்.) நீயதற்குண்மைபண்ணிக்கொடுப்பாயா? Will you swear to it? உண்மைகண்டவன். One who has experienced the truth (of a religion). உண்மைத்தவறு, s. Falsification, உண்மைவழு. 2. Failure in moral rectitude, சன்மார்க்கவழு. 3. A breach of trust, நாணயப்பழுது. உண்மைத்தாழ்ச்சி, s. Unfaithful ness, breach of trust, உண்மைக்குறை. உண்மைத்தாற்பரியம், s. The real object, scope or design, யதார்த்தமானகருத்து. உண்மைத்துரோகம்--உண்மைப்பா தகம், s. A very flagrant breach of truth, flagitious crime of the guilt thus incurred, நம்பிக்கைத்துரோகம். உண்மைப்பட, inf. To become evident to the mind--as the deity to his worshippers, மெய்ப்பட. 2. To prove true --as religion, by means of the Shasters, arguments, miracles, &c., மெய்யாக. 3. To appear as a certainty to the exclusion of all doubt, hesitation, &c., நிச்சயப் பட. உண்மைப்படுத்த, inf. To prove or show to be true, மெய்ப்பிக்க. உண்மைப்பிடி, s. Tenacious adherence to a religion from a discovery of its truth. 2. Consistent and steady perseverance in religion. உண்மைப்பேதகம், s. Prevarication. 2. Breach of trust, unfaithfulness. உண்மைப்பொருள், s. The Deity, the real Being, as eternal, immutable, &c., மெய்ப்பொருள். 2. The meaning of the Vedas, or of a system of religion, உள்ளபொருள். உண்மையளவை, s. [in logic.] Ascertainment of a thing from the attributes or qualities affirmed of it--as when we hear that a stone attracts iron, we know that it is a magnet, பிரத்தியட்சப் பிரமாணம். உண்மையறிந்தவன், s. One who has discovered the reality, authenticity, mysteries, &c. of religion. 2. One who has experienced the truth, &c. of religion. உண்மையானதெய்வம், s. The true deity. உண்மையானவன், s. A man sincere in religion. 2. A man of probity. உண்மையுவமை, [in rhetoric.] A figure in which the simile is rejected, the reality being ascertained, மெய்யுவமை. 130) *

umi (p. 62) s. Husk, chaff, hull, bran, தானியங்களினுமி. (c.) உமிக்கரப்பான், s. A small kind of eruption especially in children. உமிக்கரி--உமிச்சாம்பல், s. Ricehusk, charcoal used for cleaning the teeth, polishing metals, &c. உமிக்காந்தல், s. A fire by ricehusks. உமிக்கூர்--உமிமூக்கு, s. The apex of rice chaff broken off, or several of them. உமிச்சட்டி, s. A vessel containing chaff in which fire is kept alive. உமிச்சிரங்கு, s. A superficial troublesome kind of itch. See நமைச் சிரங்கு. உமித்தவிடு, s. Bran mixed with fine or broken chaff given to cows, coarse bran. உமிநகம், s. Very thin nails. கூருமி, s. See உமிக்கூர். குற்றுமி, s. Broken husk. 76)

Heartiness, energy, earnestness, பிடிவாதம்; [ex உறு, urgent.] உறுதிகொள்ள, inf. To be confirmed. உறுதிசெய்ய--உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, corroborate, benefit, &c., பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To execute a title deed, bond, &c.--as a contracting party, உடன்படிக்கையெழுத. 3. To believe firmly, persuade one's self, நிச்சயிக்க. உறுதிசொல்ல, inf. To assure, speak firmly, pledge one's word, &c., திரமாகச்சொல்ல. 2. To inspire hope, to console, நம்பிக்கைசொல்ல. 3. To give good moral advice, admonish, நற்போதனை செய்ய. உறுதிச்சீட்டு--உறுதிப்பத்திரம், s. A bond, a written contract, a title deed. உறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The principal attendants on a king; they are five, viz.: நட்பாளர், அந்தணாளர், மடைத்தொழிலர், மருத்துவக்கலைஞர், நிமித்திகப்புலவர். உறுதிச்சொல், s. A word of assurance, நிச்சயமொழி. 2. A word of advice, நல்லுபதேசம். 3. An admonition, a warning, கண்டிப்பு. உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, to corroborate. உறுதிபூசுதல், s. The sacrament of confirmation among the Romanists. உறுதிபெறுதல், v. noun. Obtaining firmness of mind. உறுதிப்பட, inf. To be confirmed, assured, to be firmly established in a course of conduct, திடப்பட. உறுதிப்படுத்த, inf. To confirm in a religious sense, to corroborate, establish, பலப்படுத்த. 2. To make a verbal or written promise, உடன்படிக்கைசெய்ய. உறுதிப்பாடு, s. Firmness, fortitude, decision, திடம். 2. A promise, pledge, assurance. உறுதிப்பொருள், s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. The four chief ends of intelligent creatures. (See பொருள்.) 3. Wisdom, or good conduct, such as may profit the soul, ஞானம். 4. eṇṇm (p. 73) s. Thought, opinion, supposition, imagination, conception, &c., நினைப்பு. 2. Purpose, intention, design, object, determination, நோக்கம். 3. Motive, object, intention, design, நோக்கம். எண்ணங்குலைய, inf. To be perplexed in mind, மனங்கலங்க. 2. To be disconcerted in a plan, to be thwarted in one's expectation, எண்ணம்வீணாக. 3. To lose reputation, மதிப்புக்கெட. எண்ணங்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To entertain hope. 2. To be anxious, to be in deep concern. 3. To intend, purpose. 4. To muse on, ponder. 5. To build castles in the air. எண்ணந்தப்ப, inf. To be disappointed, to prove incorrect--as an opinion, மதிப்புத்தவற. எண்ணத்தப்பு--எண்ணத்தவறு, s. Disrespect to a superior, அவமதிப்பு. 2.
