உரகம்

urōcm (p. 65) s. A high sense of honor, keen sensibility, quick perception of an indignity, delicacy, jealousy, மானம். (c.) ஆசைக்குரோசமில்லை. kāṭu (p. 103) s. An uncultivated tract of land covered with forest-trees, thick, impenetrable brush wood, creeping plants and coarse, rank, reedy vegetation, a waste, a thicket, வனம். 2. Deserts, forest tracts, ஆரணியம். 3. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. 4. fig. Excessiveness much, closeness, &c., மிகுதி. 5. Wild, rough, uncultivated, unpolished, &c., used as a prefix--as காட்டுப்பசு. 6. A nominal termination to some words of verbal derivation, தொழிற்பெயர்விகுதி--as சாக் காடு. (c.) 7. (p.) A place, இடம். 8. A border, a limit, எல்லை. 9. A town, ஊர். 1. The second lunar asterism, பரணிநாள். 11. Chaff, straw, &c., செத்தை. காடுவாவீடுபோவென்கிற காலம்வந்தது. One who scrapes up all he can, சேர்ப்பவன். 3. One who resorts to any kind of labor for support. காடுவாழ்த்து, s. (c.) சித்திரங்கொத்த--சித்திரம்வெட்ட, inf. To carve, sculpture, grave, &c., on a plain surface. சித்திரசொரூபம், s. An image, an idol, a carved statue, a picture. சித்திரதீபம், s. A painted chamber or hall. சித்திரமெழுத, inf. To draw a picture, to paint, to sketch. (c.) சித்திரவெழுத்து, s. Elegant, nice, beautiful writing; caligraphy. 2. Variegated or fancy painting. 3. An anagram, as ஞிமிறு for மிஞிறு. சித்திரரேகை, s. Ornamental lines drawn on the body of a person. 2. One of the lines in the hand. 3. The wife of Kuvéra, குபேரன்மனைவி. சித்திரர்--சித்திரக்காரர், s. Fancy painters, portrait painters, limners, embroiderers. 2. Artizans, carvers, sculptors, engravers, சிற்பர். 3. Carpenters, தச்சர். சித்திரவதை--சித்திராக்கினை, s. Cutting and slashing in battle, prolonged butchery, cutting off member after member. 2. Ingenious and varied torture in inflicting death. (c.) சித்திரவித்தாரன், s. One artful, clever, or dexterous; one fluent in speech. (p.) சித்திரவித்தை, s. The art of fancypainting, sculpture, carving, engraving, &c. சித்திரவேலைக்காரர், s. Any fancyworkers, imitators of nature--as flower makers, artizans, sculptors, engravers. 2. Fancy-painters. (c.) சித்திரவேளாகொல்லி, s. A mode of music, a fine melody, கொல்லித்திறத்தினொ ன்று. An idol procession. தேவயானம்--தேவரதம், s. (St.) A car or vehicle of a god, திவ்வியவிமானம். தேவயானி, s. (St.) Daughter of சுக்கி ரன், teacher the Asuras, சுக்கிரன்புத்திரி. தேவரம்பை, s. Females of Swerga, தெய்வப்பெண். 2. One of the courtesans of the gods, தேவதாசிகளிலொருத்தி. தேவரனுசரிப்பு, s. Supplication (R.) தேவராசன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். தேவராதன், s. A king of Mit'hila. தேவராளன், s. [fem. தேவராட்டி.] One supposed to be possessed so as to utter oracles. சன்னதக்காரன். தேவரிஷி, s. A Rishi of the celestial class. தேவரீர், Your lordship, (2d person plu. of a symbolic verb.] தேவருணவு--தேவரூண், தேவவுணவு, s. Nectar, ambrosia, amrita, அமுதம். தேவர்--தேவர்கள், s. [pl. of தேவன்.] Gods, celestials, deities, objects of worship, gods of Swerga or any other inferior class, சுரர். 2. Honorable persons, as a guru or priest, உயர்ந்தோர்.--Note. According to the Saiva sect the superior gods, or forms of the first order assumed by the Deity are five, viz.: 1. Brahma, பிரமா. 2. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 3. Rudra or Siva, உருத்திரன். 4. Mayesvara, மயேச்சுரன். 5. Sathasiva, சதாசிவன், These are called, பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள்; the five Murtis, or பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள்; five lords. தேவர்கோயில், s. A temple, தேவால யம். தேவர்கோன்--தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra. தேவர்க்காடல், v. noun. Demoniac possession, dancing after certain sacrifices to devils, as சன்னதம், which see. தேவர்வகை, s. The gods of Swerga, 33,,, are divided into four classes, with a chief for each கோடி, or 1,,, as follows. 1.துவாதசாதித்தர், the twelve Adityas. ஆதித்தர், (lit.) the twelve suns, chiefs of their class numbering with them, 12,,, 2. ஏகாதசருத்திரர், the eleven Rudras. உருத்திரர், lords of their companies. comprising in all, 11,,, 3. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், the eight Vasus. their classes, including themselves, containing 8,,. 4. மருத்துவர், the two Asvinis, அச்சுவினிகள், the two physicians, the whole class being 2,,. தேவலகன், s. A brahman who attends on an idol, அர்ச்சகப்பிராமணன். W. p. 423. DEVALAKA. தேவலோகம், s. World of the gods, Swerga, the third of the secven upper worlds, of which Indra is king, the lowest heaven of mortals, who assume the form of gods for a residence in it. The enjoyments are all sensual, and the period of their continuance depends on the merit of the persons while on earth. When this is exhausted, they return for another period of probation; or go to a place of suffering for the expiration of previous demerit. This is the only heaven presented to the hope of the multitude, and generally the highest bliss they anticipate, சுவர் க்கம். தேவவசனம்--தேவவாக்கு, s. The word of God, the divine, word, கடவுள்வாக்கு. தேவவசீகரம், s. [R. Cathol. usage] Transubstantiation. See வசீகரணம். தேவவருஷம்--தேவவருடம், s. A year of the gods. See தேவாண்டு. தேவவிரதன், s. (St.) Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. A pious or religious person, கடவுளைவழி படுவோன். W. p. 434. DEVAVRUTA. தேவவிருட்சம், s. Any of the five species of trees in Swerga, பஞ்சதரு. W. p. 424. DEVAVRUKSHA. தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல், s. (Chirs. usage.) Divine revelation. தேவவைத்தியம், s. Superior medical preparations requiring a knowledge of chemistry, and regarded as of divine origin. See வைத்தியம். தேவன், s. A Deity, a god, a divine being, கடவுள். W. p. 421. DEVA. 2. A title given to அகம்படியர் caste. 3. A title given to some among Maravars. 4. (சது.) The name of Argha, அருகன். தேவாங்கம், s. Silk cloth, பட்டுச்சீலை. தேவாசனம், s. [in chris. usage.] The throne of god, an altar, கடவுளிருக்கை. தேவாசுவம்--தேவாஸ்வம், s. The horse of Indra, இந்திரன்பரி; [ex அசுவம்.] தேவாண்டு--தேவஆண்டு, s. A year of the gods of Swerga, being three hundred and sixty-five yaers of mortals, திவ்வியவருஷம். தேவாதாயம்--தேவதாயம், s. Allowance for the support of heathen temples. தேவாதி, s. God, கடவுள், (சது.) தேவாதிதேவன், s. The God of gods. தேவாதியர், s. [com.தேவாதிகள்.] The gods of Swerga and other celestials. தேவாதீனம், s. Properties, peculiar rights, prerogative, &c., of a deity. 2. Divine providence. See தெய்வாதீனம். தேவாத்திரம்--தேவாஸ்திரம், s. A divine missile-weapon from the gods. தேவாமிர்தம்--தேவாமுதம், s. The ambrosia of the gods, the food of immortality, தேவருணவு. தேவாரம், s. Divine praises, songs, &c., chanted by an assistant of the priest others, after the performance of the puja in the Saiva temples. They were made by the three celebrated servants of Siva, அப்பர், சம்பந்தர் and சுந்தரர், and are called the Tamil Vedas, being considered divine. தேவாலயம், s. A temple, a place of worship, any sacred shrine, கோயில். W. p. 424. DEVALAYA. 2. (சது.) The golden mountain Naha Meru, as the favorite resort of the gods, மேருகிரி. See ஆலயம். தேவாலயத்தினுடைமை, s. Temple property, கோயிற்சொத்து. தேவானுட்டிப்பு, v. noun. Religious practice, duties, exercise, worship, &c., [ex அனுஷ்டிப்பு, observance.] தேவி, s. A goddess. 2. Parvati, பார் வதி. 3. Durga, துர்க்கை. 4. Kali. காளி. 5. A queen, the wife of a prince, or nobleman, a term of respect to a married women, சீமாட்டி. 6. A wife, மனைவி--as அண்ணன்தேவி. elder brother's wife. தேவிகோட்டம், s. Any temple of Kali. காளிகோயில்; [ex கோட்டம்.] 2. A town, ஓ ரூர். W. p. 424. DEVIKOD'D'A. தேவிபட்டனம், s. The town of Devipatam, ஓரூர். தேவீகம்--தேவிகம், s. [com தெய்வீ கம். Divinity. தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். தேவோக்கித்தம்--தேவோக்தம், s. Divine revelation, தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல்; [ex Sa. Ukta, spoken. (Beschi.) தேவோத்தியானம், s. A flower-garden for the gods, also a garden to produce flowers for the idols; [ex உத்தியானம்.] 25)

நாகம்
nākam (p. 273) s. The cobra-de-capella of hooded snake, நல்லபாம்பு; 2. A naga, or demigod, having a human face, with the tail of a serpent, and the expanded neck of the cobra. The race is said to inhabit a region called Patala or நாகலோகம், under the earth. 3. Lead, நயம். 4. Black lead, காரியம். 5. The black monkey, கருங்குரங்கு. 6. Monkey in general, குரங்கின்பொது. 7. An elephant, யானை. 8. A tree. See புன்னை. 9. Fragrant herb, as ஞாழல். 1. A medicinal tree, ஓர் மருந்துமரம். 11. An astrological karna, ஓர் கரணம். W. p. 458. NAGA. 12. (Sa Naka.) The visible heavens, ether, sky, atmosphere, ஆகாயம். 13. Swerga or the Indian paradise, சுவர்க்கம். 14. A kind of prepared arsenic, நாகபாஷாணம். 15. A kind of precious stone, நாகப்பச்சை. 16. A mountain, மலை. See நாகு. 17. Fine cloth, நற்றூசு.--Note. Of the நாகம் snakes there are said to be of different castes as among men; being four chief, and one inferior caste; which differ in form, motion, food and habits. அஷ்டநாகம், s. The eight famed serpents of the nether world employed at the eight cardinal points to support the earth are: 1. வாசுகி. 2. அனந்தன். 3. தக்ஷ கன். 4. சங்கபாலன். 5. குளிகன். 6. பதுமன். 7. மகாபதுமன். 8. கார்க்கோடன். To these the thousand headed ஆதிசேக்ஷன், king of the race, supporting the earth at the centre is sometimes numbered as a ninth. நாககள்ளி, s. A kind of recumbent shrub, ஓர்கள்ளி. நாககன்னி--நாககன்னிகை, s. Female of the naga race, especially a wife of Arjuna. நாகசாபம், s. Curse of the cobra. inflicted on a person for killing it. See நாகப்பிரிதஷ்டை. நாகசின்னம்--நாகசுரம்--நாகஸ்வரம். s. [com. நாகசரம்.] A kind of pipe or clarionet, one of the chief musical instruments, ஓர்துளைக்கருவி. நாகதத்துவம், s. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. A plant fed on by the silvestre or cochineal insect. Oblong Indian fig. (Ains.) நாகதிசை, s. West point, மேற்கு. நாகதீபம், s. A lamp in the form of a five headed cobra, ஐந்தலைவிளக்கு. நாகதேவி--நாகம்மா, s. The cobra, as a goddess. நாகநாதன்--நாகநாயகன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். 2. As நாகதேவன். நாகபடம், s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A kind of tune, ஓரிரா கம். நாகவல்லி--நாகவள்ளி, s. A betel plant, வெற்றிலைக்கொடி. 2. [also நாகவல்லி முகூர்த்தம்.] The finishing ceremony of a marriage on the fifth day, கல்யாணச்ச டங்கிலொன்று. நாகவாடை, s. In gold coin, a slight alloy, supposed to be contracted from the metal of the mould, செம்பூறல். நாகவாய், s. An instrument used by turners, ஓர்கடைச்சற்கருவி. நாகாசனன், s. The Brahmany-kite, whose food is snakes; [ex அசனம், food.] நாகாத்திரம்--நாகாஸ்திரம், s. A dart, as நாகபாசம். நாகாந்தகன், s. Garuda, as the devourer of snakes, the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] நாகாபரணம், s. An ornament in form of a cobra, worn by Siva, சிவனணியி னொன்று. நாகாபரணன், appel. n.
