அத்தம்

The rising of the sun and moon, in conjunction, at the beginning of which, the sun is in Capricorn on a Sunday in the month of January, and the moon in the 22d asterism, and the 17th யோகம்; deemed a most auspicious moment for religious bathing, alms-giving and other duties. These five things do not occur together oftener than once in sixty years. Adam's bridge, extending from the Coromandel coast toward Ceylon--said in India mythology to be ten yojanas wide and a hundred long, and to be formed by Nalan, or according to some legends, by Hanuman, the commander of Rama's armies, to enable the forces to pass over for the invasion of Lanka, சேதுவணை. 3. தானம்
tāṉam (p. 236) --ஸ்தானம், s. Place, location, situation, spot, station, இடம். 2. Home, abode, dwelling, residence, locality; natural situation, habitation; elements of a creature, &c., இருப்பிடம். 3. Any part or member of the body, any particular or special part, உயிர்நிலை. 4. Any of the five seats or situations of the soul in the body. (See அவத்தை.) 5. Any special place, as the residence of the king or chief, இராசஸ் தானம். 6. A sacred shrine, the interior or most sacred spot in a temple, &c., சர்ப்பக் கிரகம். 7. The world of Indra, as சுவர்க்கம். 8. Strength, power, firmness, வலி. 9. Stage of life-poetically considered, செய் யுட்பொருத்தம். 1. Any of the four seats or sources of the sounds of the letters, எழுத்துப்பிறக்குமிடம். 11. [in numeration.] Place or digit, எண்ணின்தானம். 12. [in astrol.] Any of the twelve signs consulted, for predicting one's fortune, in reference to the planets and their situation in the signs, கிரகநிலை. 13. Any of the five places in the zodiac with respect to any given planet. 14. [vul. for ஸ்நானம்.] A bath. 15. (R.) The upright posture of the images of Vishnu, in distinction from the sitting. தானம், 5. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. The five arbitrary divisions of letters are அ, ஆ; இ, ஈ, ஐ; உ, ஊ, ஔ, எ, ஏ; ஒ; ஓ. தானவண்ணம், s. A curious kind of song, சுரவிகற்பப்பாட்டு. தானவரிசைபாட, inf. To sing with a tremendous noise. 13) *

nāṉam (p. 275) s. (St. ஸ்நானம்.) Bathing, ablution by pouring or immersion, purification by bathing, குளித்தல். (சது.) 2. A bath, water for bathing, முழுகுநீர். For the seven kinds of ablutions, see ஸ்நானம். ஸ்நானபானம், s. Ceremonial ablution, and eating. (c.) ஸ்நானம்பண்ண, inf. To bathe, to perform ablution. 52) *

nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். Different branches of knowledge. நாலுகாரியமுமறிந்தவன். A man of general knowledge, one acquainted with men and things. நாலுகையிலும். On all hands, on all sides. நாலுசாதியும். All the castes. 2. Various castes, several castes. நாலுதிக்கும். The four cardinal points. quarters, regions. 2. On all sides, in all directions. நாலுதிக்கிலுஞ்சிதறுண்டுபோக. To be scattered in different directions. நாலுதெருவுந்திரிகிறான். He strolls, or wanders through all the streets. நாலுமுக்கிலுமெதிர்தார்கள். They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [probably a change of நானாவிதம்.] Various kinds, varieties, sundry modes, &c. நாலுபேருமறிய--நாலுபேர்அறிய, inf. (adverbially) Publicly, before all, generaly or universally known. நால்வகைத்தோற்றம், s. Marriage, கலியாணம். 5. Praise, panegyric, blessing, வாழ்த்து. 6. Auspicious objects, used on festive occasions; of which eight are special: 1. சாமரம், chowry, a fly-whisk; 2. நிறைகுடம், a full ornamented pot; 3. கண்ணாடி, mirrors; 4. தோட்டி, elephant's goads; 5. முரசு, drums; 6. விளக்கு, lamps; 7. கொடி, flags; 8. இணைக் கயல், A brace of carp-fish. மங்கலகாரியம்--மங்கலச்செய்கை--மங் கலவினை s. A festive, auspicious or joyous ceremony--as a marriage, putting on jewels; a temple-festival, on a girl's arrival at puberty, &c. மங்கலகீதம்--மங்கலப்பாட்டு, s. Auspicious chants, music, &c. மங்கலகௌசிகம்--மங்களகௌசிகம்-மங்களகௌசிகை, s. A tune, ஓரிராகம். (சது.) மங்கலச்சொல்--மங்கலமொழி, s. Auspicious words, in place of inauspicious terms, fancied to be lucky for speaker or hearer. 2. Language of congratulation, or benediction, ஆசிவசனம். 3. Auspicious terms, together with their synonyms, used for beginning a poem. They are twenty-two in number: 1. திரு, wealth, &c.; 2. யானை, an elephant; 3. தேர், a chariot; 4. பரி, a horse; 5. கடல், the sea; 6. மலை, a mountain; 7. மணி, a gem; 8. பூ, a flower; 9. புகழ், praise; 1. சீர், good state or condition; 11. மதி, the moon; 12. நீர், water; 13. எழுத்து, a letter, a writing; 14. பொன், gold; 15. ஆரணம், Vedas, the law; 16. சொல், a word; 17. புயல், cloud; 18. நிலம், earth; 19. கங்கை, the Ganges; 2. உலகம், the world; 21. பரிதி, the sun; 22. அமிழ்தம், nectar. Others give more. (சது.) மங்கலஸ்நானம்--மங்கலநானம், s. Bathing for an auspicious ceremony, as a marriage, a temple-festival, &c. மங்கலதினம்--மங்கலநாள், s. An auspicious day. மங்கலதூரியம்--மங்கலபேரிகை--மங் கலமுரசு--மங்கலவாத்தியம், s. Auspicious drums and other musical instruments. மங்கலநதி, s. A sacred river. மங்கலநாண், s. The marriage-badge, including the தாலி and its cord. மங்கலபத்திரிகை--மங்கலவோலை, s. A marriage-invitation. மங்கலபாடகர், s. Bards, encomiasts, panegyrists. மங்கலபுருஷன், s. A proper man to conduct a festival, or to communicate good tidings--as one married, not a widower, not deformed, one good tempered, prosperous, &c. மங்கலமங்கையர், s. [pl. com. கட்டுக்க ழுத்தியர்.] Women wearing the marriagebadge. மங்கலமுகூர்த்தம்--மங்கலவேளை, s. [com. முகூர்த்தவேளை.] An auspicious hour. மங்கலம்புரிய, inf. To be united in marriage. மங்கலவணி, s. Auspicious ornaments. மங்கலவழக்கு, s. Auspicious words, terms or usages. மங்கலவள்ளை, s. A poem on a female of noble birth, in nine வெண்பா, and nine வகுப்பு See பிரபந்தம். மங்கலவாரம், s. An auspicious day, commonly Monday or Wednesday, or any day on which there is a favorable configuration of the planets, நல்லநாள். 2. See மங்கலன். மங்கலவார்த்தை, s. Auspicious language, as சுபவசனம். 2. Good news. மங்கலவாழ்த்து, s. Salutation, benediction, praise, especially to a hero in the opening or concluding of a poem. மங்கலவினைஞர், s.
