ஐயம்
aiym (p. 80) s. Doubt, hesitation, uncertainty, indecision, suspense, scepticism, terms or probability, possibility, and any thing short of positive certainty are included, சந்தேகம். 2. (p.) Alms, charity, பிச்சை. 3. A beggar's vessel or shell, இரப்போர்கலம். 4. Phlegm--one of the humors of the body, சிலேட்டுமம். 5. Doubt, surprise, &c.--as one of the துறை, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று-as, போதோவிசும்போபுனலோபணிகளது பதியோ யா தோவறிகுவதேதுமரிது, whether the place the damsel occupies is a lotus flower, the world of the gods, water, or the world of serpents, it is difficult to determine. ஐயம்புகினுஞ் செய்வினைசெய். Though you go abegging, perform your duties. (ஔ வை.) ஐயகணசூலை, s. An arthritic disease arising from phlegm and heat, ஆறுசூலையிலொன்று. ஐயக்காட்சி, s. One of the three states of the pulse--that in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent in the system, சிலேட்டுமநாடி. See நாடி. ஐயப்பட, inf. To doubt, hesitate. ஐயப்படாமை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from doubt and fear, certainty, undauntedness, சந்தேகங்கொள்ளாமை. 2. One of the eight அறத்துறுப்பு. See உறுப்பு. ஐயப்பாடு, s. Doubt, uncertainty, indecision, apprehension, suspense, சந் தேகம். ஐயமறுக்க, inf. One of the five kinds of questions which are proposed to remove doubt from the mind, சந்தேக நிவர்த்திசெய்ய. ஐயமிட, inf. To give alms, பிச் சையிட. ஐயமிட்டுண். Give alms before you eat. ஐயமுற, inf. To doubt, சந்தேகம டைய. ஐயமேலிட, inf. To be in a great doubt, சந்தேகமதிகரிக்க. 2. To have the rattles in the throat--as a dying person, சிலேட்டுமமேலிட. ஐயவணி, s. A figure in rhetoric-as where doubt is entertained as to whether a thing which bears analogy to another is identical with or distinct from it--as தாதளவிவண்டுதடுமாறுந்தாமரைகொ ல் மாதர்விழியுலவும் வாண்முகங்கொல். I doubt whether it is the face of a woman or a lotus flower, since it resembles so much the latter. ஐயவதிசயம், s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவும்மை, s. A particle showing uncertainty, doubt. See உம். ஐயவுவமை, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயுற, inf. கன்மம்
kaṉmam (p. 102) s. Moral actions, especially in their effects--as the cause of transmigrations and their accompanying joys and sorrows, pleasure and pains, intelligence or stupidity, &c., சஞ்சிதகன்மம். 2. Actions, செய்தொழில். 3. Evil actions, evil, vice, தீவினை. (See கருமம்.) 4. Fate, destiny, the fruits, retributions, &c., of actions in former births, பிராரத்தகன்மம். Wils. p. 198. KARMMAN. In the Agamas, actions and their effects are of three classes, viz: 1. ஆகாமியம், moral actions, good and evil of the present life, considered as the source of future births with their suffering and enjoyment. 2. சஞ்சிதம், the accumulated actions of the soul in former births, the retributions of which are to be experienced in future transmigrations. 3. பிராரத்தம் or பிராரத்துவம், the enjoyment and sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present state --as the retributions of actions in former births. அவனைக்கொல்லாதேகன்மம்பிடிக்கும். Do not kill him, if you do, the action will seize you. கன்மங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. See கருமங் கட்டுப்பட. கன்மகாண்டம், s. A medical book treating of diseases, as caused by the sins of former births, and the means necessary to remove them, so that medicines may prove effectual, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். கன்மசண்டாளன், s. See கரும சண்டாளன். கன்மசாந்தி, s. A ceremony for the expiation of the evil of former deeds, கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மஞ்செய்தகுடி, s. A family guilty of wicked actions in former births, now made manifest by their sufferings. கன்மத்தியாகம், s. Expiation of the evil of a former birth. கன்மத்துரோகி, s. A wicked wretch, a criminal, சண்டாளன். கன்மநிவர்த்தி--கன்மநிவாரணம், s. See கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மந்தொலைய, inf. To become extinct, to be worked or eaten out and terminated--as former evil deeds. கன்மபந்தம், s. [as கருமபந்தம்.] The bond or connexion between the sins of former births and their subsequent punishment. கன்மபரிபாகம், s. Ripening, or expiration of the accumulated merit of the actions of former births, கன்மவொழிவு. கன்மபாதகம், s. A heinous crime. கன்மபாதகன், s. One guilty of some heinous crime, கொடியபாதகன். கன்மபூமி, s. The earth as the theatre of moral actions, or place where virtue and vice are practised, and their respective merit and demerit accumulated, பூலோகம். கன்மம்பிடிக்க, inf. To attend, follow, or pursue--as the guilt of crimes personified. கன்மம்புசிக்க, inf. To experience the good or evil of former actions. கன்மவலை, s. The net of moral actions, கன்மபாசம், i. e. the entanglements of births, or actions and their result, in subsequent transmigrations. கன்மவாதனை, s. See கருமவேதனை. கன்மரோகம்--கன்மவியாதி, s. See கருமவியாதி. கன்மவுடம்பு, s. Bodies assumed, as a result of former deeds, கன்மசரீரம். கன்மாதி, s. Funeral rites, &c., for deceased ancestors, கர்மாதி. கன்மி, s. A heinous sinner, a perpetrator of crimes, கருமி. கன்மேந்திரியம், s. The five organs of action, தொழிற்கருவி. See இந்திரியம். 68)

krumm (p. 96) s. Act, action, moral actions involving future retribution, &c., கிரியை. 2. Actions of a previous birth, good or evil, entailed on the soul and resulting in the enjoyments and sufferings of the present or a future state, fate, destiny, முன்வினை. 3. Business, profession, occupation, attempt, essay, enterprise, தொழில். 4. Religious rites, duties, &c., stated, periodical, or otherwise, according to the rules of the shasters; moral duty, specific action, duty, obligation imposed by peculiarities of tribe or occupation, &c., வைதீகக்கிரியை. 5. Natural activity, self-moving energy, &c., இயற்கைச்சொல். 6. Religious actions --as connected with the hope of future recompense and as opposed to speculative religion--as explained in the Agamas, ஆகாயமிருகம். 7. [in grammar.] The object of actions, செயப்படுபொருள். 8. Magical enchantment of eight kinds, அஷ்டகருமம். (1.) வசியம். getting a person into one's own power, influence, &c. (2.) மோகனம், libidinous fascinations. (3.) தம்பனம், stopping, checking, restraining the powers of fire, the flowing of water, the ferocity of wild beasts, &c., making a spirit or person stand immovable in a place and depriving him on the power of speech, &c. (4.) உச்சா டனம், setting demons against one to ruin him by magical incantations, or dislodging them from persons or places. (5.) ஆகருட ணம், summoning or invoking a spirit or absent person visibly into one's presence. (6.) வித்துவேடணம், excitment to hatred. (7.) பேதனம், causing separation, dissension, discord. (8.) மாரணம், deprivation of life, killing either spirits or men. Wils. p. 197. KARUMA., and p. 198. KARUMAN. 9. Heat, உஷ்டணம். கருமஒழுங்குபெருமைக்களவு, rectitude of his actions is the measure of a man's dignity. கருமவரிசையால். For the attainment of an object-- (நாலடி.) கருமகர்த்தா, s. A doer, actor, performer. கருமஞ்செய்பவன். 2. [in grammar.] The agent, காரியகர்த்தர். கருமகாண்டம், s. A division of the Vedas, வேதநூலினோர்பகுப்பு. 2. A medical treatise of Agustya. See கன்ம காண்டம். கருமகாண்டிகன், s. One who practises the rites and ceremonies inculcated in the Vedas, கிரியாகாண்டிகன். கருமங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. To be contracted, accumulated, laid up, &c.--as sins for retribution in future births, வி னைகட்டுப்பட. கருமசண்டாளன், s. A villian, a scoundrel, a rogue, an abandoned wretch. கருமசம், s. Vice, atrocity, தீவினை. Wils. p. 197. KARMAJA. கருமசாங்கரியம், s. Community of wives, promiscuous or indiscriminate cohabitation, ஐக்கம். கருமஞானம், s. Knowledge and skill religious exercise and ceremonies. கருமத்தலைவர், s. Royal fortunetellers, astrologers, conjurers, foretellers of future events, வருங்காரியஞ்சொல்வோர். கருமத்தலைவன், s. a superntendent. 2. A minister, அரசர்க்குத்துணைவன். கருமத்துரோகம், s. Treachery, treason, villainy துரோகஞ்செய்யல். கருமநிவிர்த்தி, s. Ceremonies performed to expiate the evil deeds of former births in times of disease, &c. கருமபந்தம்--கருமபந்தனம், s. The tie or vinculum, கருமபாசம், Which connects the actions of a former birth with their fruits in after transmigrations. Wils. p. 198. KARMMABANTHANA. கருமபாகை, s. One of the three parts of the Vedas, relating to daily ceremonial rites, வேதத்தின்பொருட்பாகுபாட் டிலொன்று. See ஞானபாகை, and அருத்தபாகை. கருமபூமி, s. The part of the earth deemed most sacred in which Hinduism prevails and religious rites are regularly performed, வினைசெய்தற்குரியபூமி. Wils. p. 198. KARMMAB'HUMI. 2. A place of cremation, சுடுகாடு. கருமபூமிக்குரிமை, s. The six occupations of men, viz.: 1. வரைவு, marriage. 2. தொழில். trade. 3. வித்தை, study. 4. வாணிபம், merchandize. 5. உழவு, husbandry. 6. சிற்பம், the arts. கருமமுடிக்க, inf. To accomplish one's purpose. 2. To perform duties, rites, ceremonies, &c., especially the daily rites and duties of religion. கருமவியாதி, s. A lingering and afflictive disease, the result as supposed of atrocious deeds in previous births. கருமவேதனை, s. The results, actions-as births, bodies, pleasures, pains, &c., கன்மவாதனை. கருமாதி, s. Prescribed funeral rites for deceased ancestors, அந்தியேட்டிமுதலிய சடங்கு. கருமாதிகாரன், s. A ruler, a governor, கருமத்தலைவன். கருமாதிசெய்ய, inf. To perform funeral rites. கருமாத்துமா, s. A heinous sinner, one who has accumulated evil deeds either in a previous birth or the present. Wils. p. 199. KARMMATMAN. கருமாந்தம்--கருமாந்தரம்--கருமாந் தியம், s. The end of a funeral ceremony which continues for sixteen days. Wils. p. 199. KARMMANTA, KARMANTARA. கருமானுட்டானம், s. Performance of exterior rites as distinguished from the contemplative or internal ritual of the silent worshipper. Wils. p. 199. KARMMANUSHTANA. கருமானுபவம், s. Suffering evils from sins of previous births, கருமப்பய னுகர்ச்சி. கருமி, s. A person engaged in the ordinary external rites of religion who has not risen to the higher degrees, கிரி யைசெய்பவன். 2. To describe, define, தெரிவிக்க. 4. To demonstrate, prove, உரூபி க்க, 5. To present to an idol, &c., to offer, நிவேதனஞ்செய்ய. 6. To make a display of jewels, &c., தெரியக்காட்ட. 7. To put forth, develop, வெளிப்படுத்த. 8. To reflect an object--as a mirror, water, &c., சாயைகாட்ட. 9. To remaind, நினைப்பூட்ட. காட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To betray, discover a person to his enemies. 2. To accuse one. 3. To teach or shew a person the method of doing anything. காட்டிமறைக்க, inf. To tantalize a person, by offering something to him, and snatching it away at the moment he is about to take it. புகைகாட்ட, inf. To smoke any thing--as plantains, in order to ripen them the sooner. தெரியக்காட்ட, inf. To show plainly, to demonstrate. வரக்காட்ட, inf. To send off, despatch. தேவரிர்வரக்காட்டினநிருபம். The letter which you have despatched. (Besch.) சொல்லிக்காட்ட, inf. To explain, relate. தன்னைக்காட்ட, inf. To make one's self known, to make one's character, ability, &c. appear where he is unknown, &c. 2. To make a display. 3. To show one's character, &c., by outward conduct. சத்தங்காட்ட, inf. To cry aloud. தூபங்காட்ட, inf. To burn incence. தண்ணீர்காட்ட, inf. To water sheep, horses, &c. காட்டல், v. noun. Manifestation. 2. Act of showing or pointing. சுட்டல். காட்டில்--காட்டிலும். (with a noun.) Than. 2. (with an infinitive.) As soon as, the moment before, the very instant. பொழுதுபோகுங்காட்டிலும்நித்திரையென்ன... Why do you go to sleep as soon as the sun sets? அதைக்காட்டிலுமிதுசிறப்பு. This is more beautiful than that. நான்கொடுக்குங்காட்டிலுமெடுத்தெறிந்துபோடுகி றான். காய்
kāy (p. 104) s. Unripe fruits, fruits, that do not grow mellow by ripening--as grains, nuts, &c., கனிக்காய். 2. (c.) A callous tumour, an excrescence, a wart, a corn, a cicatrice from a wound, காய்ப்பு. 3. An unripe boil, &c., காய்ப்பரு. 4. A piece at chess, a die, சொக்கட்டான்காய். கட்டியின்னங்காயாயிருக்கிறது. The tumour is not yet ripe. காயவியல், s. A curry carelessly prepared with unripe fruits. காய்கறி, s. Fruits, vegetables and the like for preparing curry. காய்காய்க்க, inf. To form as a fruit; to produce fruit, to bear fruit. காய்காய்க்கிறமரம், s. A tree that bears fruit, not a barren tree. காய்க்கடுக்கன், s. [prov.] An ear-ring with a sacred seed fastened in it, for a bead, from which, if water fall on the body, in bathing, &c., it is deemed very meritorious, உருத்திராட்டக்கடுக்கன். காய்க்குலை, s. A bunch of unripe fruits. காய்ச்சீர், s. [in prosody.] Any of the four metrical feet ending in காய்காய்; also, a metrical foot equivalent in measure to a foot in காய். See சீர். காய்த்தானியம், s. The nine kinds of grains, called முதிரை, நவதானியம். 2. A shrub, கம்பளிகொண்டான், Morus Indica. காய்பறிக்க, inf. To pluck unripe fruits. காய்மடி, s. The thick, hard udder of a cow unfit for milk. காய்மடை, s. [prov.] An offering of fruits, commonly to a ferocious deity, கனிவர்க்கநிவேதனம். காய்ம்பனை, s. [prov.] A fruit-bearing palmyra tree, as distinguished from young trees and males, காய்க்கும்பனை. காய்வள்ளி, s. See வள்ளி. காய்வெட்டிக்கள், s. [prov]. Toddy from a Palmyra tree, the young fruits of which are cut off that the juice may flow from the stalk, காயைவெட்டி இறக்குங்கள். கருக்காய், s. Grain almost ripe. கருங்காய், s. Dark betel-nuts, not yet turned red. செங்காய், s. Fruits or grain turning yellow when ripening. பசுங்காய்--இளங்காய், s. Fruits just formed, tender grain. 2. immature fruit or grain. 90)

A chief or headman among the சாணார் toddy-drawers, சாணாரு ட்பெரியவன். கிராமதேவதை, s. The tutelary deity or goddess of a village, hamlet, &c., ஊர்காக்குந்தேவதை. கிராமதேவதையின்திருவிழா. The feast of tutelary goddess. கிராமத்தார், s. Inhabitants of a village, villagers. கிராமப்பிரதக்ஷணம்வர, inf. See ஊர் வலம்வர. கிராமியம், s. Rustic speech, provincialism, provincial usage, இழிசனர்வழக்கு. கிராமியன், s. A villager, a rustic, a peasant, one born in a village, கிராம முற்றோன். சிறுகிராமம், s. A village or hamlet of one-hundred families, a tithing. பெருங்கிராமம், s. A hamlet or district of five-hundred families. 98)
