A creeping plant, சிறுகுறிஞ்சா, Periploca, L. அமுதப்பார்வை, s. A favorable or propitious look. as of a lady towards her admirer, குளிர்ந்தபார்வை. அமதமேந்தல், v. noun. Giving food to ascetics and other virtuous persons, guests, as one of the nine kinds of புண்ணியம், and of the sixteen உபசாரம். அமுதயோகம், s. [in astrology.] The auspicious conjunction of a certain day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. See யோகம். அமுதர், s. Celestials, வானோர். 2. Herdsmen, இடையர். (p.) அமுதவல்லி, s. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s. The god of the Jainas, அருகன். 2. An ascetic, துறந்தோன். 3. A ஞானி. 4. (in general.) One who controls the passions, அடக்கமுடையோன். 5. A learned man, அறிவுடையோன். (p.) 35)

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

aṟu (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, ம், அற, v. n. To be parted, detached, separated; to break as a rope, அறுபட. 2. To cease, become extinct, perish, end, vanish, அழிய. 3. To be decided, ended, தீர. (c.) அற, inf. [used adverbially.] With a verb it expresses; 1. Wholly, entirely, quite, முழுதும். 2. Intensely, excessively, மிகவும். 3. Negation, being without, as குற்றமற, without fault. அறச்செட்டுமுழுநஷ்டம். Selling things too dearly will cause entire loss; i. e. avarice causes loss. அறப்படித்தான். He has learnt all perfectly. எழுத்தறவாசி. Read with distinct articulation. அறக்கட்ட, inf. To tie tightly, இறுகக்கட்ட. 2. To monopolize, ஒருமிக்கக் கொள்ள. அறக்காய, inf. To be over-dried, over-boiled, over-heated. அறக்கூட்ட, inf. To sweep clean or thoroughly. அறக்கூர்மை, s. Excessive sharpness as of a writing style. அறச்சிவப்பு, s. Deep red, extremely red. அறச்சிறியது, appel. n. The smallest. அறப்பாடல், v. noun. [commonly, அறம்பாடல்.] Composing poetry containing imprecations or spells.--Note. Verses of this kind are supposed sometimes to be made without design, and thus to injure the maker and others. அறப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine thoroughly, sift. 2. To take measures to defeat, ruin or injure one by defamation. அறமிகுந்தால், v. part. At most, at the utmost, by any means, with the greatest effort. அறமிகுந்துவந்தாலும்வரட்டும். If it must come (if no effort will avert it) let it come. அறவிளக்க, inf. To polish thoroughly. அறவூத--அறவைக்க, inf. To refine metals by fire, புடமிட. அறாவிலை, s. An exorbitant price. அறுகுறை, s. A headless body, கவந்தம். அறுந்தருணம், s. Emergency, exigency. அறுந்தொகை, s. A sum, number, &c. in dividing, in which there is no remainder. அறுவாய், s. The parting made in sawing a piece of timber. 2. The opening of a cut or wound. 3. A junction, a conjunction of two periods of time, extremity, end. 4. Deficiency, what is wanted to complete a whole; [ex அறு, parted, et வாய், opening.] அறுவாய்நிறைந்தவயிர்மதி. The bright moon whose waning is restored. அற்றறுதி, s. A complete end, entire ruin. அற்றறுதிபற்றறுதியாய்விட்டது. All communion is withdrawn. அற்றான், s. A poor man, தரித் திரன், 2. A sage, முனிவன். அற்றுப்போக, inf. To be lost, to cease to be. தடையற, inf. [used adverbially.] Without impediment. அறவு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, extinction. 2. Parting, separation, breach. அறவுளி, s. Incantations performed over a sick person in order to restore him. 2. Cessation, end, முடிவு. அறுதல், v. noun. Finishing, liquidating a debt. 2. s. A broken thread, string, rope, bandage, &c. அறுந்திருப்பது. 3. A mean, despicable or faulty person, உதவாதவன் அந்த அறுதலையிங்கேவரவிடலாகாது, You must not allow that vagabond to be here. தாம்புமறுதல் தோண்டியும்பொத்தல். A broken rope and a leaky water-pot. அறுதலி, s. A widow, கைம்பெ ண்; [ex அறுதல், being plucked off (the marriage jewel), et இ, fem. termination; or அறு, torn off, et தலி, contracted from தாலி, the badge of marriage.] அறுதலிமகனுக்கங்கமெல்லாஞ்சேஷ்டை. The son of a widow is mischievous throughout his whole frame. அறுதி, v. noun. End, close, termination, முடிவு. 2. Decision, decisiveness, determination--as a decisive sale, entire renunciation of a title to landed property, தீர்ப்பு. 3. s. The purchaser's possession or title to property purchased, விற்கிரயச்சீட்டு. 4. Absence, non-existence, இல்லாமை. 5. Death, சாவு. அறுதியாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is settled, completed, ended. அறுதியிட்டுச்சொன்னான். He spoke decisively. நமக்குக்கிடைத்தது நமக்கறுதி. Thus much is realized and we shall not have to part with it. அந்தப்பழக்கத்தையறுதியாய்விட்டுவிட்டேன். I have relinquished that custom entirely. அறுதிக்கரை, s. The proper and just division or distribution of land. அறுதிச்சாதனம்--அறுதியுறுதி, s. A deed of transfer, அறுதிச்சீட்டு. அறுதிச்சொல், s. A decisive word or sentence. அறுதிப்பங்கு, s. What is given in full of all demands, a final allotment. அறுதிப்பாடு, s. Being accomplished, finished, decided. அறுதியிட, inf. To determine, to point a day, &c. 55)

To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s.
