As a prefix to words beginning with consonants, the initial is often shortened, especially when the number is specific--as அறுசுவை, the six flavors. (c.) அவ்வாறு. A magical diagram of two equilateral triangles, one laid over the other so that their sides may be parallel, making six outward and six inward angles. அறுசமயம், s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. The water in the sacred pot, afterwards sprinkled on the people, or sipped by them, as possessing mystic virtue to cure disease, to expiate sin, &c., மந்திரகும்பநீர். கும்பவஸ்திரம், s. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To hang or droop--as the கும்பம் and head of a person while near death. கும்பஞ்செய்ய, inf. To make a hillock over a grave, சமாதியின்மேல்மண்குவிக்க. 2. To inter the dead, especially such as died of cholera. கும்பப்பிளவை, s. A cancerous disease on the top of the back, ஓர்பிளவை. கும்பவாதம், s. One of the eight disorders of flatulence. (M. koṭumai (p. 146) s. Cruelty, tyranny, oppression, violence inhumanity, கொடுங்கோன் மை. 2. Severity, harshness, vehemence, impetuosity, barbarousness, குரூரம். 3. Crookedness, flexture, obliquity, வளைவு. (Sans. Kota, crookedness.) 4. roughness, harshness, uncouthness, frightfulness, கோ ரம். 5. Vileness, turpitude, wickedness, baseness, flagrance, flagitiousness, தீமை. 6. Injustice, அநீதி. 7. Sharpness, poignancy, severity, கூர்மை. 8. adj. Satirical, offensive, injurious, கடுமை.--Note. In most of its meanings, bad or injurious qualities are implied. It differs from கடு மை, in Several meanings. Like that and similar abstract nouns, it drops the termination and combines with other nouns as an adjective, according to rule. வறுமைகொடிது. Poverty is cruel. வயிற்றுக்கொடுமையினால்வருந்துகிறான். He is vexed by want of food. கொடிது--கொடியது, appel. noun. That which is cruel, கொடுமையானது. கொடியகாடு, s. A wild, inhospitable desert. கொடியகூற்றன், s. The cruel Yama. கொடியசண்டாளர், s. Desperate wretches. கொடியபிறவி, s. Vile births--as evils to which souls are subject; horrid transmigration--as keeping the soul from union with the deity. கொடியமனம், s. A cruel or envious disposition. 2. The evil heart. கொடியமுகம், s. A frightful visage; a fierce countenance. கொடியமோசம், s. Flagrant errors. கொடியவஞ்சனை, s. Base turpitude. 2. A desperate fraud; a base imposition. கொடியவன், s. A vile wretch, a hardhearted cruel man. கொடியவீரன், s. A kind of prepared arsenic, கோடாசொரிபாஷாணம். (Rott.) கொடியவெப்பம், s. Oppressive, vehement heat of weather or climate, &c. 2. Poignant qualities of medicines. கொடியோன், s. A cruel man. 2. The plant, கற்றாழை, Aloes. கொடுங்கண், s. See கடும்பகல். கொடும்பாவி, s. A heinous sinner. கொடும்பாவை, s. The effigy of an old woman, dragged through the streets with lights and vociferation, in time of drought, and burnt to expiate public crime and bring rain. Sometimes கொடும் பாவி. கொடும்புரி, s. camāti (p. 163) s. The last of the eight அ ங்கயோகம், or states and modes of silent, contemplative worship, அங்கயோகத்தொன்று. 2. One of the postures of the ascetic for silent meditation, being an upright, majestic position, as a fancied image of the deity, ஞானசமாதி. 3. The abstract contemplation of the ascetic in which the soul is supposed to be independent of the body and mind. (See யோகம்.) 4. Knowledge of the sublimest description--as of the deity, one's own spiritual nature, &c., acquired by supernatural illumination, without the aid of organs physical or mental, சமாதி தரிசனை. 5. A mode of interment, by placing the corpse in a sitting posture in imitation of the சமாதி worshipper, சமாதி யில்வைக்க,--Note. The வீரசைவர் sect are all burried in this manner, (it being deemed improper to burn them lest the linga previously worn should be burnt also,) and occasionally a monument of masonry is built around the corpse, as a linga, which thus becomes an object of worship. 6. A grave, a tomb, a sepulchre, பிணம் புதைக்குங்குழி. 7. [in rhet.] A species of personifications, a metaphor in which the quality or attribute properly belongs to the objects to which the metaphor refers, ஓரலங்காரம்--as பாயிருள்பருகிப்பகல்கான்றெழுதரு பருதி, the orient sun which swallows the darkness and pours forth the day; also, கன்னிமதில், virgin walls, i. e. imperishable, and குமரிஞாழல், the young rush, i. e. ever green. 8. Death, demise, commonly spoken of a devotee, மரணம். W. p. 896. SAMAD'HI. சமாதிக்குப்போக, inf. To betake one's self for a time to his cell, as an advenced devotee to secure uninterrupted, and protracted contemplation in silent worship. சமாதிக்குழி, s. The cell or grave of the devotee for interment, in an erect, sitting posture. 2. A grave. சமாதிபண்ண, inf. To sit in any of the postures of the Yogi. (p.) சமாதிபெற, inf. To receive of the Guru the degree of the Yogi, entitling the person to the privilege of sitting in the சமாதி postures. சமாதியடைய, inf. To sit in the ச மாதி posture in silent meditation. 2. To retire to the grave, to die. 3. To die in an erect posture--as a devotee. சமாதியில்வைக்க, inf. To bury a corpse in a sitting posture--as customary with some Hindus. (c.) சமாதியிருக்க, inf. To sit in a contemplative posture--as a silent devotee. 2. To betake one's self to his sepulchre --as an exalted devotee, on the approach of death, remaining without nourishment in a sitting posture until life is extinct. சமாதியுப்பு, s. A kind of medicinal salt formed from the corpse interred in a sitting posture, taken up after some years; also the salt cast into the grave at the interment to prevent putrefaction. 10)
