āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

irngku (p. 48) கிறேன், இரங்கினேன், வே ன், இரங்க, v. n. To pity, compassionate, commiserate, பரிதபிக்க. 2. To grieve, regret, relent, to feel concern, anxiety, துன் பப்பட. 3. To weep, cry, அழ. 4. (p.) To sound, resound, ஒலிக்க. போனநரட்கிரங்கவும்வரும். And regret may ensue for the days past (in vain.) இரங்கல், v. noun. Weeping, &c., அழுதல். 2. s. An expression of sorrow in love poetry, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று. 38) *

eṇmai (p. 73) s. [a contr. of எளிமை.] Lowness of rank, inferiority, despicbleness, poverty. 2. Pitiableness, a state deserving of, or calling forth pity, பரிதாப நிலை. 3. Easiness of acquisition, access, accomplishment, facility, இலேசு. (p.) உவனைப்பொருவதுவுமெண்மையதுவோ. Is it easy to contend with him in battle? (ஸ்காந்.) எண்மையன், s. An easy, or docile person, one easy to manage, இலேசான வன். 2. One of no importance, or weight of character, of no ability, &c., எளியவன். 43) *

kṭi (p. 87) s. Scent, odor, fragrance, வா சனை. 2. Wedding, nuptials, கலியாணம். 3. Protection, safeguard, defence, காவல். 4. Sharpness, keenness, கூர்மை. 5. Brightness, transparency, ஒளி. 6. Fearfulness, dreadfulness, அச்சம். 7. Speed, swiftness, சீக்கிரம். 8. Poignancy, pungency, கரிப்பு, 9. Abundance, copiousness, plentifulness. மிகுதி. 1. Beauty, சிறப்பு. 11. Delight, gratification, pleasure, இன்பம். 12. Intensity, உக்கிரம். 13. Newness, modernness, புதுமை. 14. Sounding, sonorousness, ஓசை. 15. Time in minute or indivisible portions, பொழுது. 16. A flower-garden, நந்தனவனம். 17. Merriment, களிப்பு. 18. A vampire, a goblin, பிசாசம். 19. A corpse, பிணம். 2. Explication, விளக்கம். 21. (இரேவ.) A beggar's bowl, இரப்போர்கலம். (p.) கடிகெழுபரிதியைக்கரங்குவித்தபின். After worshipping with folded hands the bright sun-கடிமதுநுகர்ந்தோர். Those who drink liquors which cause them to be merry-கடிமிளகுதின்றகல்லாமந்தி. The irrational monkey which ate the pungent pepper-கடியரமகளிர்க்கேகைவிளக்காகி. Serving as a portable lamp to the timid sirens-கடியுண்கடவுட்கிட்டசெழுங்குரல். The red millet offered in rich profusion to the god who feeds upon it-கடிவினைமுடுகி. The wedding approaching-பழுமரக்கடியுட்புக்கான். He entered the grove of banyan trees. புதிதுண்கலவிக்கடிமகிழ்ந்தே. Rejoicing in recent conjugal pleasures- கைவளைபலியொடுங்கடியுட்சோர்ந்தவால். The bracelets (of the ascetic virgins) dropped into the beggar's bowls along with the rice. எம்மம்புகடிவிடுதும். We will soon despatch our arrows. கண்ணாடியன்னகடிமார்பன். One whose breast glitters like a crystal-கடிநகர், s. A city surrounded by guards. கடிமாலை, s. A fragrant flowergarland. கடிமுரசு, s. The sounding drum. கடிமுனைப்பகழி, s. A sharp-pointed arrow. விழாக்கடி, s. The splendid scene of the festival. 45) *

kṭṭu (p. 88) கிறேன், கட்டினேன், வேன், கட்ட, v. a. To tie, bind, gird, confine, link, chain, hamper, trammel, shackle, pinion, fasten, brace, pack, put on clothes, to wear, பிணிக்க. 2. To build, construct, frame, erect, fix, arrange, வீடுமுதலியகட்ட. 3. To hug, embrace, தழுவ. 4. To marry, விவாகஞ் செய்ய. 5. To bind by spells, magic, &c., to conjure, தடைகட்ட. 6. To fabricate, contrive, invent, கதைகட்ட. 7. To harden, condense, consolidate mercury, vermilion, &c., by the admixture of certain ingredients, சரக்குக்கட்ட. 8. To subordinate, subdue, subject, அடக்க. 9. To suborn, to bribe, பரிதானத்தாற்கட்ட. 1. v. n. [with the impersonal terminations.] To harden, consolidate, form as concretions, to concrete, clot, congeal, இறுக. 11. To become bound or confined, constricted--as the throat; to overspread as clouds, to collect, மூட. 12. To form as a boil, tumor, &c., to imposthumate, to gather, கட்டிதிரள. அடிபட்டஇடத்திலேயிரத்தங்கட்டியிருக்கிறது.... The blood is clotted in the part which is bruised. இப்படியிட்டேற்றம்பேசினாலுனக்குத்தொண்டையி லேகட்டும். If you persist in thus traducing me, you will have a boil in your throat; i. e. you will be seriously distressed--a curse. கட்டாக்காலி, s. An ox or cow suffered to run wild, or not folded by night. கட்டாணி, s. a fastening for a female ear-ring, கடைப்பூட்டாணி. கட்டிக்காக்க, inf. To preserve, guard, to protect. கட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a daughter in marriage. 2. To make, build, construct, &c., and give one. கட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take in marriage. 2. To hug, to embrace. 3. To contract, to lay up, to accumulate as moral deeds, virtue or vice, for future retribution. 4. To secure as an object, to turn a thing or person to one's own account, to conciliate favor, to bring within one's own power or influence. 5. To suborn, to bribe. 6. To make up a difference, a quarrel, &c., to become reconciled, to settle amicably, to compromise. தேசத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To conquer a country. புண்ணியத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To do a good action. பாவத்தைக்கட்டிக்கொள்ள. To contract guilt, to commit a sin. மாங்காய்ப்புளிதொண்டையைக்கட்டிக்கொண்ட து. The acid of the mango has caused a constriction in my throat. என்னபலனைக்கட்டிக்கொண்டாய். What hast thou obtained? கட்டிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To throw the arms round a person, to hug, to embrace, to grasp, to seize. கட்டிப்புகுந்தவள், s. A widow that has married again. கட்டியடிக்க, inf. To tie and flog, whip, &c., கட்டுகரை, s. A mole, a pier to defend shipping in a harbor. கட்டுசரக்கு, s. Mercury, &c., consolidated. கட்டுத்தாலிகட்ட, inf. To marry a widow. 2. To take a woman to wife-this may be done, if the man has no child by his first wife, with her consent, who acknowledges its validity by tying the marriage symbol round the neck of the new bride. தன்னைக்கட்ட, inf. To protect one's self by the use of magical incantations. 2. To have sufficient for one's support. 3. To be economical, frugal, to live within one's income. கவிகட்ட, inf. To compose a verse. கட்டு, v. noun. Binding, bonds, linking, connecting, கட்டுகை. 2. Hardening, consolidating, &c. இலிங்கக்கட்டு, s. Consolidated vermilion. தாளக்கட்டு--அரிதாரக்கட்டு, s. Consolidated orpiment. இரசக்கட்டு, s. Consolidated mercury. பாஷாணக்கட்டு, s. White arsenic. நவச்சாரக்கட்டு, s. Consolidated sal ammoniac. 38)

kṟkiccā (p. 102) s. Equation for the second inequality of a planet when its position is within six signs of aries. 2. Table of these equations, the annual parallax of the orbits of planets, given when their place in the heavens is from cancer to capricornus, கற்கிசீக்கரபரிதி; [ex கற்கி, cancer, சா, sign], meaning the signs of commutation from cancer to capricornus, which is equal to the annual parallax. 17)

kuti (p. 120) க்கிறேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To jump, leap, spring, bound, skip; to leap from, to rebound, பாய. 2. To spirt out, splash up--as water; to spring, to be brisk or active--as quicksilver, இரச முதலியனருசிக்க. 3. (fig.) To be boisterous, frolic, haughty, arrogant, பெருமையிலேதுள்ள. 4. v. a. to pass over, to leap over, கடக்க. 5. To surpass, overcome, to escape from, கடந்துபோக. குதித்துக்குதித்துமாவிடித்தாலும்புழுக்கைக்கொருகொ ழுக்கட்டையே. Though the poor maidservant beat flour ever so hard and briskly, she will have but a small கொழுக்கட்டை cake. குதித்துப்பாய, inf. To leap over, to leap down from a carriage, &c. 2. (fig.) To be insolent or wanton, to be unjust, cruel, &c. குதித்துவிழ, inf. To jump into, to plunge, to dive. 2. To jump down from a height. குதி, v. noun. A jump, a leap, jumping, குதிப்பு. 2. Energy, exertion, முயற்சி. குதிகொள்ள, inf. To frisk, to leap, to play about, to revel, sport, frolic, &c., through intoxication or excessive mirth; to be jolly, high-spirited, ஆனந்தக்கூத் தாட. 2. To dwell and sport with one-as the goddess of prosperity; to abound--as prosperity, felicity, செல்வமுதலியதேங்க. 3. To be excessive, to exceed bounds, to overflow, அளவுகடக்க. கூற்றங்குதித்தலுங்கைகூடும். It is possible even to overcome the god of death. (p.) குதிப்பு--குதியன், v. noun. Jumping, leaping; a jump, குதிக்கை. 2. (fig.) A display of haughtiness and arrogance. மற்றையர்க்கெல்லாம் வெஞ்சமற்குதிப்பரிது.... Others will find difficult to escape from the cruel Yama. 2)

The omniscient deity, கடவுள். 2. A sage who by devotion is supposed to have obtained omniscience. சருவசங்கப்பரித்தியாகம், s. Relinquishing all society. See under சங்கம். சருவசங்காரம், s. The entire destruction of the universe. சருவசங்காரகாலம், s. The time of the universal destruction. சருவசனவசீகரன், s. One who by good deportment, fair speech, enchantment, or other means, secures the good will of all. சருவசாட்சி, s. God--as the witness of all things, the searcher of all. சருவசித்தி, s. The eight superhuman powers, அஷ்டமாசித்தி. 2. Power to succeed in every thing. See சித்தி. சருவசீவதயாபரன், s. God--as benevolent to all creatures. சருவசீவர்கள், s. All created living beings. சருவஞ்ஞன், s. The omniscient, the deity--oppo. to கிஞ்சிஞ்ஞன். சருவதப்பறை, s. Full of errors. சருவதப்பறைப்பஞ்சாங்கத்துக்கு அறுபதுநாழிகை யுந்தியாச்சியம். A miscalculated almanac makes the whole sixty native hours of the day as rejected time.--Note. There are three or four நாழிகை in every day deemed inauspicious for entering on any good action. சருவத்தியாகம், s. Giving up all things, total and absolute renunciation of the world, the will, &c., from religious motives, முற்றுந்துறத்தல். சருவநாசம், s. Entire destruction. (c.) சருவபரிபூரணர், s. God--as filling all things, the all-pervading. சருவபூஷணம், s. As சர்வாலங்காரம். சருவமானியம், s. Fields, &c., exempted from taxes; a privilege granted by the ruling powers, இறையின்றிக்கொ டுக்கப்பட்டபூமி. சருவலோகம், s. All worlds, the universe. சருவவல்லமை, s. Almightiness, omnipotence. சருவவல்லவர், s. The almighty, the omnipotent. சருவவியாபகம், s. Ubiquity, omnipresence. See வியாபகம். சருவவியாபி, s. The deity--as allpervading. சருவாங்கம், s. All the parts or members of the body. 2. The whole body, all the body; [ex அங்கம், body.] (c.) சருவாங்கசவுரம்--சருவாங்கசவுளம், s. Shaving the whole body. சருவாங்கசுத்தி, s. Entire purity, purification of the whole body. சருவாங்கதகனம், s. Burning the whole. 2. A whole burnt offering. சருவாங்கதகனபலி, s. A whole burnt sacrifice. சருவாணி, s. A name of Parvati, பார்வதி; [ex சருவம், Siva, et ஆணி, fem. affix.] W. p. 911. SARVVAN'EE. சருவாதிகாரம், s. All power, universal power. சருவாந்தரியாமி, s. God--as all pervading and omnipresent, கடவுள்; [ex அந் தரியாமி.] சருவாயுதம், s. A complete set of arms and armor. Sometimes சர்வாயுதவர்க் கம். சருவாலங்காரம், s. A complete set of ornaments. சருவானுகூலம், s. Success in all things. சருவேசுரன்--சருவேசுவரன்--சருவேச் சுரன், s. The Supreme Being. See ஈசு ரன். 14) *

(R.) சீக்கிரகதி, s. A quick pace, rapid progress. 2. The quick movement of a carriage, a horse, &c. (p.) சீக்கிரகாரன், s. An expeditious person. சீக்கிரபுத்தி, s. Hasty counsel, precipitancy, rashness, foolhardiness. சீக்கிரப்படுத்த, inf. To hasten, hurry, expedite, quicken. சீக்கிரபரிதி, s. [in astron.] The annual parallax of a superior, or elongation of an inferior planet. சீக்கிரப்பட, inf. To be peevish, to take offence easily. 2. To be in haste, to be busy. சீக்கிரமானபுகையிலை, s. [prov.] Pungent tobacco. சீக்கிரம்பண்ண, inf. v. n. To hasten, to hurry. 2. [prov.] To be hot, as the sun; pungent, as tobacco; violent as poison, &c. சீக்கிரகேந்திரம், s. A winding coil, a wrapper, an envelope, நூன்முதலியவற்றின்சுற்று. 6. The girth of the foot-end of a tree, as a measure of its contents, மரச்சுற்று. 7. The felly of a wheel, உருளையின்சுற்று. 8. The surrounding wall of a fortification, சுற்றுமதில். 9. The circuit of a fortification, மதிற்சுற்று. 1. A roll, a scroll; a cigar, புகையிலைச்சுற்று. 11. [in combination.] A ring, விரற்சுற்று. 12. A whitlow, நகச்சுற்று. See சுற்று, v. n. எங்கள்சுற்றிலே. In our quarter or circle. சுற்றளவு, s. The extent of a circumference, the periphery; perimeter. சுற்றுக்கடுக்கன், s. A kind of earring. See under கடுக்கன். சுற்றுக்கட்டு, v. noun. A house with verandas, &c., all round. Also சுற்றுக்கட்டு வீடு. 2. Fabrication, fiction, கட்டுக்கதை. 3. Bribery, பரிதானம். சுற்றுக்கால், s. Neighborhood, an adjacent place, அயல். (c.) சுற்றுக்காலில்விசாரிக்கத்தெரியும். It can be known by inquiry in the neighborhood. சுற்றுக்காலிடுதல், v. noun. Dancing attendance on a court, &c. சுற்றுக்காலிட்டுக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. (fig.) To importune, கெஞ்சித்திரிய. சுற்றுக்கோட்டை, s. A circular fortification. சுற்றுத்தேவதை, s. A circle of idols. சுற்றுக்கோயில், s. Smaller temples around the larger. சுற்றுச்சுழல்--சுற்றுச்சுழற்சி, v. noun. Meanderings of a labyrinth. 2. Intricacy of an affair. 3. Involution in style; an intricate form of expression. 4. Circumlocution, paraphrase, &c. 5. Reverse or intricate arrangement of ideas in the construction of verse.
