urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. eẕutu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுதினேன், வேன், எழுத, v. a. To write, paint, draw, mark, stain, trace (letters, &c.), inscribe, வரைய. 2. To foreordain, to predestine. This verb is soused from the notion that each one's fate is written by Brahma in the skull, தலையிலெழுத. 3. To write composition, draw up in writing, வசனாதிகளெழுத. 4. To engrave, சித்திரமெழுத. எழுதக்கைதிரும்பவில்லை. The hand is not yet trained. எட்கிடைநெற்கிடைவிட்டெழுத. To write leaving the space of a sesamum seed between the letters, and of a grain of rice between the lines--the order to be observed in writing. எழுதாக்கிளவி--எழுதாமறை, s. The vedas, lit. unwritten works--an appellation adopted with reference to their meaning being handed down by oral explanation and not written, or to the accent, pronunciation, &c., which cannot be written, வேதம். எழுதிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To grant by writing, write and deliver as a voucher. 2. To betroth a girl by written contract. 3. To write for another, draw up a document. 4. To write lessons for a learner. 5. To give a list, inventory, &c. எழுதிக்கொள்ள, inf. To write a letter, petition, &c., to a great person; to write for one's self. 2. To enrol. 3. To write and deliver vouchers reciprocally. எழுதிச்சேர்க்க, inf. To register, file a writing as a notary public. எழுதிவைக்க, inf. A person proved innocent in a court of justice, not guilty-oppo. to குற்றவாளி. (c.) 2. A holy person. சுத்தவிக்கேபம்--சுத்தவிட்சேபம், s. [in astron.] The true celestial latitude. See புடலிக்கேபம். சுத்தவித்தை, s. [in Agam.] A preponderance of spiritual knowledge above a tendency to works. See சிவதத்துவம். சுத்தக்கட்டிவெள்ளி--சொக்கவெள்ளிக் கட்டி, s. A lump of pure silver. (c.) சுத்தவீரம், s. True valor, heroism. (c.) சுத்தவீரர், s. (sing. சுத்தவீரன்.) True heroes. சுத்தவுபவாசம், s. Absolute fasting, total abstinence during a fast. சுத்தவெள்ளை, s. Pure white. 2. That which is entirely white. (c.) சுத்தன், s. A pure person, a sincere person, பரிசுத்தன். (c.) 2. One ripe for liberation from births, a soul in the third, or highest stage, next to absorption, நின்மலன். 3. Siva, அரன். 4. Brahma, ஐயன். 5. Argha, அருகன். 6. Vishnu, அரி. கைச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanness of hands or freedom from bribery. (c.) மெய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Cleanliness of body. (c.) மனச்சுத்தம், s. Mental purity. (c.) வாய்ச்சுத்தம், s. Veracity, or cleanness of mouth. (c.) சுத்தாங்கம், s. Pureness, cleanness, purity, sanctity, சுத்தம். 2. Entireness, absoluteness, முழுமை; [ex அங்கம்.] (c.) சுத்தாங்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. It is entirely gone. 2. It is quite clean. சுத்தாங்கன், s. A pure person, one without moral stain. (Colloq.) சுத்தாத்துமா, s. A person of superior, spiritual knowledge. 2. One of spotless, irreproachable character. 3. tṇ (p. 222) s. Coolness; that which is refreshing, குளிர்ச்சி. 2. adj. Cool. (p.) தண்கதிர்--தண்சுடர்--தண்ணவன், s. The moon; (lit.) the cool-rayed, சந்திரன். தண்ணீர், s. Cold or fresh water, குளிர்ந்தநீர். 2. [improp.] Water in general, நீர். 3. What is too much diluted, இளகுந்தன்மை.--commonly used தண்ணி. தண்ணீராக, inf. To become watery, to be too much diluted. தண்ணீராக்க, inf. To cause one to have pity. 2. To dissolve metals. 3. To dilute. மனதைத்தண்ணீராக்கிவிட்டான். He has gained his good will. தண்ணீருக்குவிட, inf. To let cattle drink. தண்ணீரெற்ற, inf. To throw out water, with the feet, hands, &c. தண்ணீர்கட்ட, inf. To admit water into garden beds and confine it. தண்ணீர்காட்ட, inf. To water beasts. 2. To deceive, to tantalize; from the story of a buffoon who obeyed the command literally, and showed water to his master's horse, but did not suffer him to drink. தண்ணீர்காண, inf. To appear or gush out, as water in a newly dug well. தண்ணீர்குடித்தபாடம்--தண்ணீர்ப்பா டம், s. An expression used to denote intimate acquaintance. 2. A lesson well learnt. 3. A science well mastered. (c.) தண்ணீர்க்கண்டம், s. Accident by water. See கண்டம். தண்ணீர்கலசம்-தண்ணீர்க்குடம், s. A water-pot. தண்ணீர்க்காரன், s. (fem. தண்ணீர்க்காரி. vul. தண்ணீர்க்காரிச்சி.) A man who draws or brings water. தண்ணீர்க்கால், s. A water-course, a channel for water. தண்ணீர்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle water for the purification of sheep, for sacrifice. 2. (fig.) To give one over to his own way. நான்அவனைத்தண்ணீர்தெளித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். I have left him to himself. தண்ணீர்த்தவனம்--தண்ணீர்விடாய், s. Thirst. தண்ணீர்த்துறை, s. The entrance to a tank, river, &c., where men or cattle go for water. தண்ணீர்பட்டபாடு, v. noun. Like water; i. e. profuse, plentiful, free. (c.) தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல்--தண்ணீர்ச்சாலை, s. A shed where water, butter-milk, lemonade, &c., are furnished. தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி--தண்ணீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Being watery as food or fruits. 2. Containing water, as pustules. 3. Being suffused with watery humors, as the body. 4. The limit of the water in a tank. See சீர்ப்பிடி. தண்ணீர்ச்சாரை, s. A kind of ratsnake living in tanks, as நீர்ச்சாரை. தண்ணீர்ப்பகை, s. Hurtfulness of some kinds of water. (Rare.) தண்ணீர்ப்பாம்பு, s. A water snake, whose bite is not venomous. தண்ணீர்மாற, s. [prov.] To lead water into garden-beds, to trees, &c. (c.) தண்ணீர்வார்க்க, s. To give water to travellers from a water shed. 2. To pour water for a low caste person to drink, who is not allowed to touch the cup. தலைக்குத்தண்ணீர்வார்த்தல். Bathing a girl with appropriate ceremonies, on her becoming marriageable; done by aged matrons, not widows, who are not allowed to be present. தண்ணீரொத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To agree with one's constitution, as water. (c.) தண்ணீரோத--தண்ணீர்மந்திரிக்க, inf. To consecrate, or enchant water to be given to a woman in labor, &c., to dispel the effects of the evil eye, &c. தண்ணீர்விட்டான், appel. n. A kind of plant, a linear leaved shrub, Asparagus racemosus. (Willd.) தண்ணீர்விட்டான்கிழங்கு, s. The root of the above, containing cool water. 50) *

tḷr (p. 229) தளரு, கிறேன், தளர்ந்தேன், வேன், தளர, v. n. To grow slack--as a tie, a grasp, a bandage; to become ralaxed, enfeebled, கட்டவிழ. 2. To grow weak, weary, infirm, decrepit, impotent through age or disease; to be enfeebled as the joints, பலவீனப்பட. 3. To grow wrinkled or flabby from age; to be flexible, limber, tender, நெகிழ. 4. To suffer in mind, to be troubled, faint at heart, மனந்தளர. 5. To be remiss, relax; to decline in duty, to grow careless, to degenerate, சோம்ப. 6. To droop, lanquish, fail as persons, plants, &c., சோர. (c.) தளரப்பிசைய, inf. To make thin by mashing with the fingers. தளரப்பிசைந்தூட்ட, inf. To feed a child with thin food, or pap. தளரவிட, inf. To forsake one, to leave one without assistance. தளரவிட்டுப்பேச, inf. To chaffer or haggle in making a purchase. தளராமல்சாப்பிட, inf. To fare sumptuously or plentifully. தளருடை, s. Loose dress. (p.) தளர்ந்தகாலம், s. Decrepit old age. 2. Time of adversity, when one has lost his influence. தளர்ந்தநடை--தளர்நடை, s. A gentle walk, as of an old or feeble person. தளர்ந்தவயது, s. Decrepit old age. தளர்ந்துகொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] (com. தாழ்ந்துகொடுக்க.) To yield. தளர்பாடம், s. [vul.] A lesson well learned, தண்ணீர்குடித்தபாடம். மனந்தளர்தல், v. noun. Being grieved or vexed in mind. தளர்விக்க, inf. To slacken, to give out rope, to loosen. 2. To suffer, to languish. 3. To be less rigid, to be indulgent. தளர்வு, v. noun. Growing slack, relaxing. 2.
