One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? To be confirmed, assured, to be firmly established in a course of conduct, திடப்பட. உறுதிப்படுத்த, inf. To confirm in a religious sense, to corroborate, establish, பலப்படுத்த. 2. To make a verbal or written promise, உடன்படிக்கைசெய்ய. உறுதிப்பாடு, s. Firmness, fortitude, decision, திடம். 2. A promise, pledge, assurance. உறுதிப்பொருள், s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. The four chief ends of intelligent creatures. (See பொருள்.) 3. Wisdom, or good conduct, such as may profit the soul, ஞானம். 4. The real meaning, or essence of a passage, நிச்சயார்த்தம். உறுதிமுடிக்க, inf. [prov.] To execute a title deed, or bond. உறுதியர், s. Messengers of state, confidential agents, தூதர். உறுதியற்றதாக்க, inf. To disannul. உறுதியாய்க்கேட்க, inf. To solicit urgently. 2. To inquire accurately. உறுதியாய்த்தாக்க, inf. ūṉṟu (p. 72) கிறேன், ஊன்றினேன், வே ன், ஊன்ற, v. a. To plant, set, fix, place firmly, rest upon with pressure--as a pole in propelling, fixing a boat, a musket, a lever, &c., நிறுத்த. 2. To lay down premises in an argument, நியாயத்திற்குமூலத்தைஸ்தாபிக்க. 3. To grasp, hold, strike root as trees, gain a firm footing, become established in a place, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 4. v. n. To lean upon, recline, or depend on a staff, a person, &c., சார. 5. To be steadfast, firm, intent upon, உறுதியாய்நிற்க. ஊன்றக்கொடுத்ததடியென்னுச்சியையுடைக்கிறது. The staff which I gave him to lean upon, breaks my head; i. e. the good I have done him has turned out evil. கையூன்றிக்கரணம்போடவேண்டும். To tumble, the hands must be fixed on the ground; i. e. nothing can be done without money, means, &c. மழையூன்றிப்பேய்கிறது. It rains hard or incessantly. மேகங்காலூன்றிமழைபெய்தது. The clouds resting on the horizon poured down torrents. நிலத்திற்சிக்கெனவூன்றியவேர். Roots stuck firmly in the ground. ஒத்தகடப்பாட்டிற்றாளுன்றியெய்து. Exerting themselves in their proper calling. ஊன்றக்கட்ட, inf. To edify, ratify. ஊன்றிக்கேட்க, inf. To interrogate with much emphasis, press for an answer, உறுதியாய்வினாவ. 2. To hear attentively, கருத்தாய்ச்செவிகொடுக்க. ஊன்றிக்கொள்ள inf. To gain a firm footing in a place, office, &c.; to establish one's self, நிலைபெற. 2. To lean or depend upon, சார்ந்திருக்க. ஊன்றிச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak, or pronounce with distinct articulation, உறுதியாய்ச்சொல்ல. ஊன்றித்தாங்க, inf. To press on a pole in stopping, or poling a boat, ஊன்றித்தள்ள. ஊன்றிநடக்க, inf. To walk cautiously, firmly, &c.--as on slippery ground. 2. To walk firmly as one regaining the use of his limbs. 3. To walk with a firm foot so as to secure a quick pace. கோலையூன்றிக்கொண்டுநடக்கிறான். He walks with the assistance of a staff. ஊன்றிப்படிக்க, inf. To read poetry with proper pauses. 2. To sing with proper articulation, emphasis, &c. ஊன்றிப்பார்க்க, inf. To look steadfastly, intently, &c., நோக்கிப்பார்க்க. 2. To consider a thing maturely, to fix the mind intently on the object of consideration, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. 3. To feel, try--as a fruit, &c., pressing it with the hand, கையினாலழுத்திப்பார்க்க. ஊன்றிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To seize firmly, hold tight, இறுகப்பிடிக்க. 2. To mark faults severely, கூர்மையாய்க்குற்றம் பிடிக்க. 3. To hold fast an opinion, பிடி வாதமாயிருக்க. ஊன்றிப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, உறுதியாய்ப்பேச. இந்தநியாயத்திலூன்றிப்பேசு. Urge this argument, insist upon it. ஊன்றிப்போட, inf. To confirm an opinion, accusation, evidence, &c., ஸ்திரப்படுத்திவிட. ஊன்றிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread cautiously--as one on a well-beam, step firmly, steadily, &c. ஊன்றியெழுத, inf. To press or indent well in writing. ஊன்றிவைக்க, inf. To establish a family. 2. To settle one in life, business, &c. 3. to confirm, settle one in an opinion in a slight degree. ஊன்றுகால், s. A stay, a prop, உதைகால். ஊன்றுகோல், s. A staff, a walking stick, a support, பற்றுக்கோடு. எழுத்தையூன்ற, inf. To put a point over a letter which makes it mute. நாற்றையூன்ற, inf. To set plants.

eṭu (p. 73) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take up, lift up, raise, தூக்க. 2. To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. [in combination.] To rise, extend itself, become spread, or liffused, to be attacked with pain, &c., மயக்கமெடுக்க. 13. To swell, heave, rise in billows, எழும்ப. 14. To keck, puke, vomit, வாந்தியெடுக்க. எடுக்கத்தொடுக்கவிடான். He will not let me begin; spoken figuratively in allusion to the discharge of arrows. எடுப்பாரும் பிடிப்பாருமுண்டானாலிளைப்புந்தவிப்பும் மெத்தத்தோன்றும். Where there are many attendants much trouble is experienced. பிள்ளைக்குமூக்கெடுக்க. To raise or force out the upper part of the nose of an infant--as a nurse by pressing with two fingers. அரசனாலயமெடுத்தான். The king has built a temple. இந்தப்பாரமெடுக்கமாட்டேன். I am unable to carry this load. அதையெடுத்துப்பேசினான். He took up the subject. யானைதும்பிக்கையினாலேபணத்தையெடுக்கும். The elephant will take up a small coin with his proboscis. ஏரியெடுத்துப்போகிறது. The water of the lake has carried away its embankment. இதினாலிலாகிரியெடுக்கும். This will cause intoxication. சோற்றிலிருக்கிறகல்லையெடுக்கமாட்டாதவன்மோக னக்கல்லைத்தாங்குவானா. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which, the weight of the article weighed is used for the scale. எடுத்தாட்சி, s. A thing much in use, வழக்கம். எடுத்தார்கைப்பிள்ளை, s. A docile, tractable, yielding person; one who has no opinion of his own. எடுத்துக்கட்ட, inf. To fabricate, invent. எடுத்துக்கட்டு, v. noun. Fabrication, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. Invention--as of a word. எடுத்துக்காட்டல், v. noun. An author's adducing examples, illustrations, &c. (See உத்தி.) 2. Citing, quoting, &c. எடுத்துக்காட்டு, s. To be overcome in argument--as a party in controversy, &c., to be confuted, தோற்றுப்போக. அவள்பேச்சினாலயலெல்லாமெடுபடுகின்றது... The whole neighborhood is raised by her clamor. எடுபட்டவள், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... The school which existed there formerly has been abolished. உன்னால்நானெடுபட்டுப்போவேனா. Am I to be defeated by you? எடுபாடு, s. Celebrity, a high style of living, notoriety in a good or bad sense, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Abolition, அழிகை. 3. Gaiety, in dress, in a woman, a lax, or lascivious disposition, மேட்டிமை. எடுப்பிக்க, inf. To cause to raise, or lift up. மனிதவதாரமெடுக்க, inf. To assume the human form, to become incarnate. வெறியெடுக்க, inf. To be intoxicated. வெறியெடுத்தவன், s. One who is intoxicated. பெயரெடுக்க, inf. To assume an appearance, a name, a character, &c.; to acquire a name, celebrity. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To disentangle thread. வாயாலெடுக்க--வாயிலெடுக்க, inf. To vomit. தொழிலெடுக்க, inf. To enter upon an occupation. 2. To suspend one from office. பூவெடுக்க, inf. To gather flowers. கிணறெடுக்க, inf. To dig a well. 2. [prov.] To select a spot for a well in reference to the situation of the house and other surrounding objects that ill luck may not result, as also to the nature of a soil or the depth at which water may be found, judged of by the produce of the land, &c. வயிறெடுக்க--வயிறுகடுப்பெடுக்க, inf. To have a looseness. தானெடுத்துமொழிதல், v. noun. [in works of science.] The adoption of rules, or language from other authors. See உத்தி. எடுப்பு, v. noun. He will not desist from his purpose. வாயெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசுகிறவன். One who talks arrogantly. ஒருவன்மேலெடுப்பெடுத்தல். Publishing the faults of another. எடுப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To be high. எடுப்பானவன், s. A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. That which is taken and carried away. எடுப்புத்தேர், s. A small portable shrine for the conveyance of an idol on men's shoulders--opp. to இழுப்புத்தேர். கல்லெடுப்பு, s. A funeral rite. எடை, v. noun. ēngku (p. 78) கிறேன், ஏங்கினேன், வேன், ஏங்க. v. n. To weep, cry, wail; to call as a peacock, அழ. 2. To faint through fear, sorrow, &c., வாட. 3. To fear, dread, be aghast, be panic-struck, be startled, be at one's wit's end, be shocked, திகிலுற. 4. To be concerned, to regret deeply, to be in great suspense, கவலைப்பட. 5. (இராமா.) To sound, roar, ஒலிக்க. ஏங்கித்திரியேல். Do not yield to anguish and sorrow. (ஆத்தி.) ஏங்கினாற்போலேசீவன்போயிற்று. He was so overcome with fear (grief, &c.) that he instantly died. ஏங்கிப்போக, inf. oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun.
