To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To perform an obligation, duty, &c., in general. புத்திரன்றன்கடன்றீர்த்துப்போட்டான். Deafness occasioned by a fall, blow, disease, &c. காதணி, s. An ear-ornament; of this there are sixteen kinds: viz., கடிப் பிணை, கம்பி, கன்னப்பூ, கன்னாவதங்கம், குணுக்கு, குண்டலம், குழை, கொட்டை, செவிமலர், தாட ங்கம், தூக்கம், தொங்கல், தோடு, மஞ்சிகை, வல் லிகை, வேடம். காதற--காதறுந்துபோக, inf. To have the perforated part of the ear cut or torn off. காதறுக்க, inf. To rend the ear by tearing off the ear-rings. 2. To cancel a bond, commonly by mutilating it. காதறுத்தகூலிகைமேலே. Tearing the ear and getting booty; i. e. doing injustice and getting money. காதறுப்பான், s. A sore that appears round the ear, காதைச்சுற்றிவரும் இரணம். காதறை, s. One whose ear has been cut off, or mutilated. 2. The cavity of the ear. காதற்றமுறி, s. A cancelled ola bond. காதார, adv. With one's own ear. காதாரக்கேட்க, inf. To hear with one's own ears. காதாரக்கேட்டசாட்சி, s. An ear-witness. காதிலேசொல்ல, inf. To whisper in the ear. காதிலேயடிபட, inf. To be uttered in one's hearing. காதிலேயோத, inf. To whisper in the ear. 2. To initiate a disciple by whispering a மந்திரம் in the ear. 3. To give private advice. காதிலேவிழ, inf. To reach the ears, to be heard. காதுகடிக்க, inf. To whisper, to buzz in the ear. காதுகுத்த, inf. To bore, perforate or pierce the ear. நீயெனக்குக்காதுகுத்துகிறாயா. Do you pierce my ear? (Do you teach me?) காதுகுளிர, inf. To be gratifying to the ear--as good news, a good voice, sweet music, &c. காதுகேளாதவன், s. A deaf man. காதுகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to hearken, to listen, to give attention. என்சொல்லுக்குக்காதுகொடுத்தான். He has given ear to my words. காதுக்கின்பமான, Pleasing to the ear. காதுக்குடைச்சல், s. An itching, tingling sensation in the ear. காதுக்குத்து--காதுநோய், s. Ear-ache. காதுக்குறும்பி, s. Ear-wax, cerumen. காதுச்சோணை--காதுத்தண்டு, s. The lobe of the ear. காதுதூர, inf. To close the perforation of the ear. காதுத்துவாரம்--காதுத்துளை s. A perforation or hole in the ear intended for jewels. காதுப்பூ, s. A flower-shaped ear-ornament, for females. காதுப்பூச்சி, s. [prov.] A small kind of centipede, said to be very dangerous if it get into the ear, செவிப்பாம்பு. காதுமடல், s. The gristles of the ear, காதின் இதழ். காதுமந்தம், s. Dullness of hearing, காதடைப்பு. காதுமந்தன், s. A person dull of hearing. காதுமுருத்து, s. [prov.] The hard gristles of the ear. காதுவளர்க்க, inf. To promote the proper growth of the lobe of the ear for wearing jewels. காதுவிடாய், s. Weakness or lassitude in hearing, occasioned by hunger or sickness. காதுவெட்ட--காதுநறுக்க--காதுகிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To tear or nip off the stamped part of an ola bond, or otherwise to mutilate it as an indication of its being cancelled, உடன்படிக்கையின் காத றுக்க. காதெழுச்சி, s. A sore in the ear, கா தில் வரும் ஓர்நோய். காதைநெறிக்க, inf. To prick up the ears. காதைப்பொத்த, inf. To stop the ear. காதோதி, s. A malicious whisperer. காதோலை, s. An ear-ornament, often a rolled ola, colored red; used also to enlarge the perforation, whence the name, காதுக்கிடும் ஓலை.--Note. A person is considered naked with nothing in the ear. இல்லிக்காது, s. Ears with the hole very small--opposed to தொன்னைக்காது. கீழ்க்காது, s. The lower part of the ear. சோணைக்காது--சோணை பெருத்த காது, s. Large ear-laps, not perforated. தொள்ளைக்காது--வடிகாது--வார்காது, s. Ears with the hole much enlarged. மேற்காது, s. The upper part of the ear. வடுகக்காது, s. Large ear-laps artificially made. 23)

kāyattiri (p. 104) s. The Gayatri--the most sacred verse of the Vedas, recited mentally as an incantation, ஓர்மந்திரம். 2. (p.) Gayatri, a goddess or personification of the sacred verse, காயத்திரி சுரூபியாயிருப்பவள். 3. A name of Saraswathi, சரச்சுவதி. Wils. p. 288. GAYATRI. 4. Ebony, கருங்காலி. பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The Brahma Gayatri, recited by brahmans of whatever sect, in their daily worship.-- Note. The use of this Gayatri was probably established in some remote age when the worship of Brahma was practised. This has long been discontinued except in this form of the Gayatri. It is said to be addressed to the sun. Compare சாவித் திரி. சிவகாயத்திரி, s. The Siva Gayatri. 84)

civaṉ (p. 188) s. Siva, the third of the Indian Triad, in the character of destroyer, or reducer of things to their primitive atoms. By his votaries he is considered the supreme god. the other deities being subject to him, சங்கரன். சிவகணம், s. The attendant demi-gods of Siva, commonly in companies, சிவன் சேனை. சிவசமயம், s. The Siva religion. சிவசிந்தை, s. Divine contemplation, meditation on Siva--as சிவத்தியானம். சிவஞானசித்தியார்--சிவஞானசித்தி, s. A commentary on சிவஞானபோதம். See சித்தி யார். சிவஞானபோதம், s. A celebrated work consisting of twelve rules translated from the ரௌரவம், or the sixteenth Agama, being almost the only part of the Agamas known in Tamil. It is regarded as divine, without origin, and as not to be read unless the person has attained a competent degree in the religion. Other works--as சித்தியார், சிவப்பி ரகாசம், தத்துவப்பிரகாசம், &c., are commentaries on this or other treatises in support of its doctrines, ஓராகமநூல். சிவஸ்தலம்--சிவஸ்தானம்--சிவதலம், s. Temples, places, &c., sacred to Siva; Saiva temples. சிவதத்துவம், s. Degrees of religious power or attainment derived from Siva, of which five are specified--as 1. சத் தவித்தை. 2. ஈச்சுரம். 3. சாதாக்கியம். 4. சத்தி. 5. சிவம், which see severally. சிவதரிசனம், s. Sight or knowledge of Siva. 2. Pilgrimage to holy places of Siva. 3. A treatise containing a representation of the deity according to the Agamas, ஓர்நூல். சிவதர்மம்--சிவதன்மம், s. Meritorious or virtuous works performed in reference to Siva, as distinguished from actions of benevolence to creatures, பதி தர்மம். 2. One of the eighteen secondary Puranas, ஒருபுராணம். சிவதர்மோத்தரம்--சிவதன்மோத்தரம், s. The Uttera Candum (உத்தரகாண்டம்.) or the last part of the சிவதன்மபுராணம். சிவதீட்சை, s. The initiatory ceremony on entering the Saiva sect. சிவதீர்த்தம், s. A sacred tank within the precincts of the great temple at Ramisseram. சிவதொண்டு, s. Service of Siva. சிவதொண்டர், s. Devotees or votaries of Siva. சிவத்தாபனம்--சிவஸ்தாபனம், s. An edifice sacred to Siva, a large shrine. சிவத்தியானம், s. Contemplation of Siva in silent devotion, an image being formed in the mind as an object of worship. சிவத்துரோகம், s. Sin against Siva; a profanation of sacred things. சிவநிந்தை, s. Blasphemy or contempt of Siva. சிவபஜனை, s. Praising Siva by lyrics. சிவபத்தர்--சிவபத்திக்காரர்--சிவமதஸ்தர், s. Worshippers or devotees of Siva as distinguished from விட்டுணுபத்தர். சிவபத்தி, s. The religion of Siva. 2. The profession of the Siva religion. 3. Adherence, attachment, or devotedness to Siva. சிவபுண்ணியம், s. Deeds of merit, performances in reference to Siva--as சிவதர்மம். சிவபூசை, s. The worship of Siva as practised in the temple or by the கிரியை க்காரன்; the Siva-pujah, consisting of the offering of flowers, milk, boiled rice, fruits, &c., waving incense and light-reciting mantras and praises, prostrating, before the idol, &c., 2. Mental worship of Siva, in which there is an idol ceremony corresponding to what is mentioned above. சிவபூசைவேளையிலே கரடியைவிட்டாட்டுகிறதா. Is it proper to exhibit a dancing bear during the Siva-pujah--i. e. to trifle on a solemn occasion? சிவபுராணம், s. The Siva-Puranas, forming ten out of the eighteen. See புராணம். சிவபுரி, s. The abode of Siva, or city in the Siva-logam, கைலாசபுரி. 2. The city of Benares, as sacred to Siva, காசி முதலியநகரிகள். சிவபோகம், s. Enjoyment of the soul in union with Siva. (தத்.) சிவப்பிரகாசம், s. A work on the Agama philosophy, exhibiting in a condensed view the doctrines inculcated in சித்தியார், and other cognate works. சிவப்பிரதிட்டை--சிவப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The consecration of a temple or image of Siva. சிவப்பிராமணர், s. Brahmans, குருக்கள் who adhere to the Siva or Agama doctrines and practices, as distinguished from those who profess the வைதீகம். சிவப்பிரீதி, s. That which is acceptable, agreeable and pleasing to Siva--as fruits, &c. 2. May it be acceptable to Siva, --spoken by the receiver as an acknowledgement of a gift, an act of reverence, &c. சிவமயம், s. A term of invocation; also of benediction--meaning happiness, prosperity, and success, சுபமஸ்து. சிவமுந்திருக்கூட்டமும், s. See under கூட்டம். சிவமூர்த்திபேதங்கள், s. The different forms assumed by the deity, the gods. சிவராத்திரி, s. (Sometimes சிவநிசி.) The night preceding the new moon in February, kept as a watchnight in honor of Siva. சிவவாக்கியம், s. A poem on theism, wholly condemning polytheism, ஓர் நூல். சிவவாக்கியர், s. The name of a celebrated saint, the author of the poem சிவவாக்கியம். சிவலிங்கம், s. The Linga, as the chief image and material object of worship in the Saiva religion. சிவலோகம், s. The world of Siva, being the upper of the seven superior worlds. See சிவபுரி. சிவவேடம், s. The habiliments, or other badges characteristic of the worshippers of Siva--as red vestments, sacred beads, ashes, the linga, &c. சிவனடியார், s. Votaries of Siva. 2. The sixty-three special votaries of Siva mentioned in Periya Purana. சிவாகமம், s. The Agamas as the scriptures of the Siva sect, being twentyeight; of these the சிவஞானபோதம், a part of the ரௌரவம் and the வாதுளம், are translated into Tamil. The twenty-eight Agamas are the following: 1. காமிகம். 2. யோகசம். 3. சிந்தியம். 4. காரணம். 5. அசிதம். 6. தீபதம். 7. சூக்குமம். 8. சகத்திரம். 9. அஞ்சுமான். 1. சுப்பிரபேதகம். 11. விசயம். 12. நிசுவாசம். 13. சுவாயம்புவம். 14. அனலம். 15. வீரம். 16. ரௌ ரவம். 17. மகுடம். 18. விமலம். 19. சந்திர ஞானம். 2. விம்பம். 21. புரோற்கிதம். 22. இல ளிதம். 23. சித்தம். 24. சந்தானசருவோத்தம். 25. பாரமேச்சுரம். 26. கீரணம். 27. பேதம். 28. வாதுளம். சிவாதனம்--சிவாசனம், s. The place for an image of Siva used for daily worship; [ex ஆதனம்.] சிவாயநம, s. The famous five lettered incantation called the மூலமந்திரம்--as being the foundation of spiritual wisdom and all religion, and the means prescribed and proper for obtaining liberation, from births and union with the supreme. சிவார்ச்சனை, s. The worship of Siva with flowers, incantation, &c.; [ex அர்ச் சனை, worship.] See சிவபூசை. சிவார்ப்பணம்--சிவாற்பணம், s. An oblation to Siva. See அற்பணம். சிவாஸ்திரம், s. A missile weapon or dart said to be given by Siva; [ex அஸ்தி ரம்.] சிவாலயம், s. Saiva temple. சிவானுபவம், s. The bliss of union with Siva; [ex அனுபவம்.] 5)

cuḷukku (p. 198) கிறது, சுளுக்கினது, ம், சுளுக்க, v. n. To be sprained or strained, as a joint, to be displaced, deranged, &c, as a ligament, கை கால் முதலியன சுளுக்க. (c.) நரம்புசுளுக்கிக்கொண்டது.....The tendon is strained. சுளுக்கு, v. noun. A sprain, straining the ligaments of a joint, luxation. சுளுக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. [prov.] To use enchantment for curing a sprain. சுளுக்குமந்திரம், s. A mantra for a sprain. சுளுக்குருவ--சுளுக்குவழிக்க, inf. To rub a sprained limb with oil, ashes, leaves, &c., using incantation. சுளுக்குவழிக்கிறவன்--சுளுக்கெடுக்கிற வன், appel. n. One who cures sprains. சுளுக்கெடுக்க, inf.
