āṉntm (p. 44) s. A medicinal root, அரத்தை, Alpinia galanga, L. 2. A supposed inauspicious form of construction in poetry, பாக்குற்றங்களினோர்வகை. It is of six kinds; viz.: 1. எழுத்தானந்தம், lengthening the final long vowel or mute of the name of the patron of a poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்பெயர் சார்த்தியளபெழப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். நறுமாலைதாராய்தி ரையவோஒ வென்பள் செறுமாலைசென்றடைந்தபோ ழ்து. 2. சொல்லானந்தம், using a word in a poem, so that an undesigned, inauspicious meaning may be applied to its patron, இயற்பெயர்மருங்கின் மங்கலமழிக்குந்தொழிற் சொற்பு ணர்ப்பது; உ-ம். தண்மதியமின்னிவரிந்திலங்கும்வெ ண்குடைச்செங்கோல்விசய னெரிந்திலங்கும் வேலி னெழும். 3. பொருளானந்தம், inauspicious expressions of different kinds, in poems as following. (a) Stating in a poem written in praise of a king, or a great man, that the productions of his land are injured or ruined, இறைச்சிப்பொருளையூறுபடக்கூறுதல்; உ-ம். குட்டியுந்தாயுமவ்விடரகம்புக்குவீழ்ந்தன வீழக் குரங்குகளெல்லாமவற்றுக்கிரங்கி யழுது பெரியதோரார வாரமெழுந்ததவ்வரையை யொருவிப்போமினென்றான். (b.) Stating inauspicious actions as praise, மங்கலமழியக்கூறுகை; உ-ம். பீலிவிரித்துப்பலமயிலி ருந்தென வழிவந்தசைந்தவ்வருத்தத்தாற்றத்தங்கேசங்களை யெடுத்து முடிக்கில்லாதுவிரித்திருப்பரவன் வரைமேல். (c.) Stating an inapplicable comparison, உவமைக்காட்சியிலூனந்தோன்றக்கூறுவது; உ-ம். பெ யலொடு வைகிய வியன்கணிரும்பனத் தகலிருவிசும்பி னாஅரல்போலவாலிதின்மலர்ந்தபுன்கொடிமுசுண்டை. (d) Stating that a calamity or injury happened to that which is compared to the patron of the poem, பாட்டுடைத்தலைவனோ டுவமிக்கப்பட்டதற் கிடையூறுபடச் சொல்லுவது; உ-ம். வெற்பினிற்பொருத விறலோனன்ன பொற்புறு பரூஉத்தாட்போதகந்துரந்த. (e.) Comparing the patron of a poem to the meanest thing, இறப்பவிழிந்தவானந்த உவமை; உ-ம் வள்ளெயிற்றுப் பேழ்வாய் ஞமலிக்கு மான்குழா மெள்ளியிரிந்தாற்போ லெவ்வழியும் வள்ளற்கு மாலார்கடலன்ன மண்பரந்த வாட்டானை மேலாருமேலார் விரைந்து. (f) Comparing the meanest person or thing to the highest, இறப்ப வுயர்ந்த வானந்தவுவமை; உ-ம். இந்திரனேபோலுமிளஞ்சாத்தன் சாத்தற்கு மந்தரமேபோ ன்றுளது மல்லாகம் மந்தரத்துத் தாழருவிபோன்றுளதுதார் மாலையம்மாலை யேழுலகுநாறுமிணர், (g.) Comparing the patron of a poem to a thing that loses its power or eminence, இறந்துபாட்டு வமையானந்தம்; உ-ம். சென்றுபடுபரிதியிற்சிறந்ததோ ற்றத்தை. 4. யாப்பானந்தம், constructing a poem so that the name of its patron may follow a noun which is preceded by a word placed after the rhyming word of the stanza, முதற் றொடைமருங்கின் மொழிநிறுத்தொருபெயரிடைப்படுத் தவ்வழியிருசீர்ப்படப்பாடுவது; உ-ம். ஊகத்தினான்ம ல்குசோலையுழியனுயர்வரைவாய் மேகத்தினாலுமின்னாலு மெலிந்துநைந்த வாகத்தினானேற்கருளாயென்பணியு மைவாய் நாகத்தினான்மால் கடைந்திடப்பட்ட நளிகட லே. 5. தூக்கானந்தம், constructing a musical poem so that the name of its patron shall be inauspiciously, indistinctly, or abruptly pronounced, யாழொடுபுணர்ந்தபாவிற்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர் அமங்கலமாகத்தொனிக்கவும், ஒருவற் குப்புலனாகாதிருக்கவும், பிரிந்திசைக்கவும்பாடுதல். 6. தொடையானந்தம், placing the name of the patron of a poem at the beginning of the stanza, so that it may rhyme with அளபெ டை; அளபெடைத்தொடைப்பாட்டினுட்பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன்பெயர்சார்த்தியளபெடுப்பத்தொடுப்பது; உ-ம். வாஅ வழுதிமதுரைமறுகினிற்பொலிபகைமுனைப்போர். 7)

uccu (p. 59) கிறேன், உச்சினேன், வேன், உச்ச, v. a. To pitch at a mark, cast a game with betel nuts, shells, money, &c., கழற்காய்முதலியவையெறிய. 2. [prov.] To conquer in a game or controversy, to win, surpass, get the advantage of by subtilty or artifice, வெல்ல. 3. [vul.] To get another's property by artifice, to defraud, trick, பிறர்பொருளைக்கவர. உடைதாரமுத்தரிகமெல்லாமுச்சிக்கொண்டேனென் னைமெச்சிக்கொண்டேன். Having robbed her of her clothes, mantle and all, I exulted in the exploit. (திருச்செந்தூர்நொண்டி.) உச்சன், s. [prov.] A shell, arecanut, tamarind seed, &c. used for pitching in a game. 65) *

eẕuppu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுப்பினேன், வேன், எழுப்ப, v. a. To awake, rouse, start, துயிலெழுப்ப. 2. To raise one that is prostrate, or sitting, cause, or help to rise, தூக்க. 3. To raise from the dead, resuscitate, restore to life, உயிரோடெழுப்ப. 4. To raise from sickness, excite, rouse, stimulate, inspire, பலம்வருவிக்க. 5. To instigate, agitate, cause a stir, a quarrel, war, சண் டைமூட்ட. 6. To raise the voice in speaking or singing to a high pitch, இசையெழுப் ப. 7. To dislodge, or eject one, turn out, &c., கிளப்பிவிட. 8. To excite, or inflame the passions, stir up, கோபமுதலியனவெழுப்ப. 9. To raise a building, வீடெழுப்ப. முயலையுமெழுப்பிநாளையுமுச்சுக்காட்டுகிறது. Starting a hare and setting dogs after it; i. e., to excite one to an action and then injure him perfidiously. எழுப்பு, v. noun. Rousing, waking, எழுப்புகை. 18)

ōngkāram (p. 84) s. The mysterious syllable ஓம், the silent recitation of the ஓம், the letter with which each mantra begins and ends, பிரணவம். Wils. p. 175. ONKARA. ஓங்காரவுரு, s. The syllable ஓம் personified as the deity. ஓங்காரிக்க, inf. To repeat the sacred syllable ஓம், ஓங்காரமுச்சரிக்க. 44)

ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும். kurngku (p. 124) s. [adjectively குரக்கு, in poetry.] A monkey, வானரம். 2. A climbing plant, முசுமுசுக்கை. 3. An animal in general--as குரங்கம், குராகம். குரங்கின்கைப்பூமாலை. A flower-garland in the hands of a monkey; i. e. a thing of value with one who knows not its use. குரங்குக்குந்தன்குட்டிபொன்குட்டி. Even to a monkey her young is as gold; i. e. one thinks highly of his own. குரங்குதன்குட்டியின்கையைக்கொண்டுபதம்பார்க்கி றதுபோலப்பார்க்கிறான். He tests it by another, as a monkey does a new object by the hand of her young. குரங்குமனம், s. A monkey-mind, retaining its grasp, notions, &c., without inquiry, or discrimination. குரக்குமுகம்--குரங்குமுகம்--குரங்கு மூஞ்சி, s. A monkey face. குரக்குவலி--கொறுக்குவலி, s. A kind of disease with which monkeys are commonly said to be affected. குரங்காட்டம், s. Apishness; apish tricks, antics, &c. 2. v. noun. Harassing, annoying, treating one as a mere monkey. குரங்காட்டமாட--குரங்காட்டங்கொள் ள--குரங்காட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To annoy, to treat one as a monkey. குரங்குகடியன், s. [prov.] A cocoanut, injured at the top, as if by a monkey, squirrel, &c., பழுதுற்றதேங்காய். குரங்குச்சம்பந்தம், s. The mode of a monkey's hold, grasp, &c., to which the hold of the soul on God is sometimes compared.--Note. The hold of a God on a soul is compared to that of a cat on its young. குரங்குச்சேட்டை--குரங்குச்சேஷ்டை, s. Mean, monkeyish tricks--as scratching and eyeing carefully; apish imitation. குரங்குச்சேட்டைபண்ண, inf. To play apish tricks; to act meanly; to mimic, in a low manner. குரங்குப்பிடி, s. A firm grasp--as that of a monkey. 2. Dogmatism in opinion, பிடிவாதம். 3. Urgency, importunity. குரங்குவலி, s. Numbness and pain in the limbs with shivering; a spasmodic affection, incident to puerperal women, ஓர்நோய். 26)

koṇṭai (p. 146) s. Hair tied behind or on one side, மயிர்முடி. (See பால்.) 2. The corner pin of a door for a hinge. (See குடுமி.) 3. The crest of some birds, பறவைச்சூட்டு. 4. A knob, a round top--as the head of a nail, style, &c., ஆணிமுதலியவற்றின்தலை. --Note. அம்மைக்கொண்டை, அள்ளுகொண்டை, உ ச்சிக்கொண்டை, ஒழுகுகொண்டை, கன்னக்கொண் டை, கீல்க்கொண்டை, சுருட்கொண்டை, சொருகு கொண்டை, are different kinds of tufts of hair tied on the head. உன்கொண்டைகொலைய. Mayest thou be deprived of thy husband. A curse. கொண்டைகட்ட--கொண்டைமுடிக்ககொண்டைபோட, inf. To tie the hair knot. கொண்டைக்காரன், s. One who wears a knot of hair, மயிர்முடியுள்ளோன். 2. [local.] An honorable person--as distinguished by a knot for hair, மேன் டையுடையவன். 3. [in cant.] A proud person, செருக்கன். கொண்டைகட்டி, s. One of a class of வேளாளர். கொண்டைகுலைக்க--கொண்டையவிழ் க்க, inf. To untie or loose the hair knot. கொண்டைக்கரிச்சான், s. A species of the கரிச்சான் bird. கொண்டைக்கிளாறு--கொண்டைச்சி, s. [prov.] A crested kind of bird--as கொண்டலாத்தி. கொண்டைக்குச்சு--கொண்டையூசி, s. A hair-pin. See குச்சு. கொண்டைச்சுத்தியல், s. [prov. கொண் டைச்சுத்தி.] A goldsmith's or brazier's hammer, round-faced, ஓர்கருவி. கொண்டைதிருகி, s. The hole in the sill into which the corner pin of a door is fitted. கொண்டைத்துலா, s. A crest-like projection at the end of a well-sweep to keep the rope, &c., from slipping off. கொண்டைமுசு, s. [vul. கொண்டைமு சுறு.] A kind of monkey, ஓர்குரங்கு. கொண்டையன், s. [prov.] A crested species of kite, ஓர்பருந்து. கொண்டையாணி, s. A nail with a head. கொண்டைலாத்தி, s. As கொண்ட லாத்தி. 55)
