That part of the trunk of a tree, or shrub, which reaches from the ground to where the branches begin, (occurs only in composition) thus: கோழரை, a smooth trunk, like the plantain; பொரியரை, a rough trunk, like the tamarind or mangoe; முள்ளரை, a thorny trunk. அரைக்கச்சு--அரைக்கச்சை, s. A girdle, a belt, zone worn round the waist. அரைக்கால், s. The eighth part of the whole, half a quarter, marked , .) அரைச்சதங்கை, s. A string of bells worn by children round the waist. அரைஞாண்--அரைநாண்--அரை நூல், s. A cord worn round the loins to which the cloth to cover the nakedness is attached, or sometimes worn over the inner cloth, and made of gold, silver, &c., called, பொன்னரைஞாண், வெள்ளியரை ஞாண், பட்டையரைஞாண். &c. அரைநலவன், s. [prov.] A bull not well castrated. அரைநாவை, s. A part of the plough which receives the share bent one side and unfit for use, the tip of a hoe bent one side. அரைநாள், s. The half of a day. அரைப்பட்டிகை, s. A golden or silver plate or girdle worn by dancing girls and some other women round the waist, sometimes also by men, இடையணியினொன்று. அரைப்பூட்டு. Girdle, இடைக் கட்டு. 2. A joint of the loins, இடுப்பின் பொருத்து. அரைமூடி, s. A small plate of metal worn by little girls over the private parts. அரையாப்பு--அரையாப்புக்கட்டி, s. A venereal swelling, tumor or bubo about the groin, மேகநோயாலிடையிலுண்டா கும்பரு. அரைவடம், s. A string of beads worn round the waist. (p.) அரைவட்டம், s. A semi-circle, 2. A small plate of metal worn by very small female children, as அரைமூடி. அரைவயிறன், s. [prov.] Rice husks half full, or with the grains half perished, for want of rain, &c., கருக்காய். அரைவாசி, s. Half. (c.) அரைவாய், s. Half a mouthful. 2. A flat mouth with thin lips. அரைவெறி, s. The state of being half drunk, partial intoxication. 4)

To decorate the top of a pot with mango leaves and set it on the fireplace with water to receive the rice that is to be boiled and distributed among religious mendicants, or offered in the temple, பொங்கற்பானைக்குமா விலைசெருகியகயிறுகட்ட. உலைகாயவைக்க, inf. To set the rice-pot on the fire filled with water to be heated. உலைகொதிக்க, inf. To boil as water when placed on the fire for cooking, &c. உலைக்களம், s. A smith's forge, கொல்லனுலையிடம். உலைக்குறடு, s. A smith's tongs, இரும்பெடுக்குங்குறடு. உலைத்தண்ணீர்--உலைநீர், s. Water set over the fire for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்ய வைக்குந்தண்ணீர். 2. Water used by the smith in the work of the forge, இரும்பு தோய்க்குநீர். உலைத்துருத்தி, s. A smith's bellows, உலையூதுந்துருத்தி. உலைமுகம், s. A smith's furnace or the centre of the forge, கொல்லனுலையி டம். உலைமூக்கு, s. The hole in the forge in which the bellows are inserted, கொல் லனுலைநாசி. உலைமூடி, s. The cover of a pot used for heating water, உலைப்பானையின் மேல்மூடி. ஊரைவாய்மூடவுலைமூடியில்லை. There is no lid that will cover the country. உலைமூட்ட, inf. To construct a forge and make it ready for work, கொல்லனுலையாயத்தம்பண்ண. 2. To make a fire in the smith's forge, கொல்லனுலை யில்நெருப்புமூட்ட. 3. To make a fire for cooking, அடுப்புமூட்ட. உலைமூட்டினாலுண்டுலகு. If the smith construct the forge, the world will stand. உலையாணிக்கோல், s. A smith's poker, beak-iron, உலையிருப்புக்கோல். 2. A branding-iron, சுட்டுக்கோல். உலையில்வெந்தவிரும்பு, s. Iron well burnt in a smith's forge. உலையேற்ற--உலைவைக்க, inf. To set a pot on the fire, உலைப்பானையையடுப்பி லேவைக்க. அவன்என்தலைக்குஉலைவைக்கிறான். He puts a rice-pot on the fire for my head; i. e. he meditates my ruin. இன்னமுலைவைக்கவில்லை. The rice-pot has not yet been set on the fire. 28)

ūmai (p. 70) s. Dumbness, மூகை. 2. Unsounding--as a coin that will not ring, ஒலியின்மை. 3. A dumb person, ஊமன். ஊமைகண்டகனாப்போலிருக்கின்றது. It is like the dream of a dumb person (not revealable). ஊமைக்கட்டி, s. A blind boil, one that does not suppurate, வாய்மூடியபரு. 2. The mumps, பொன்னுக்குவீங்கி. ஊமைச்சி, s. A dumb woman, ஊமைப்பெண். 2. [as ஊமச்சி.] Cockles. ஊமைத்தனம், s. Dumbness. ஊமைத்தேங்காய், s. A cocoanut whose water does not sound when shaken, நீராடாத்தேங்காய். ஊமைப்பயில், s. eẕuppu (p. 75) கிறேன், எழுப்பினேன், வேன், எழுப்ப, v. a. To awake, rouse, start, துயிலெழுப்ப. 2. To raise one that is prostrate, or sitting, cause, or help to rise, தூக்க. 3. To raise from the dead, resuscitate, restore to life, உயிரோடெழுப்ப. 4. To raise from sickness, excite, rouse, stimulate, inspire, பலம்வருவிக்க. 5. To instigate, agitate, cause a stir, a quarrel, war, சண் டைமூட்ட. 6. To raise the voice in speaking or singing to a high pitch, இசையெழுப் ப. 7. To dislodge, or eject one, turn out, &c., கிளப்பிவிட. 8. To excite, or inflame the passions, stir up, கோபமுதலியனவெழுப்ப. 9. To raise a building, வீடெழுப்ப. முயலையுமெழுப்பிநாளையுமுச்சுக்காட்டுகிறது. Starting a hare and setting dogs after it; i. e., to excite one to an action and then injure him perfidiously. எழுப்பு, v. noun. Rousing, waking, எழுப்புகை. 18)

oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He insists on (going, having, &c.), he is firmly resolved. ஒருகாலும். Never. ஒருகாலுஞ்செய்யான். He never does it, he never will do it, he never can do it. ஒருகாலுமில்லை. Never, at no time, not once. ஒருகாலுமுன்னைக்கைவிடேன். I will never forsake thee. ஒருகாலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will never tell a lie. ஒருகாலே, adv. In great abundance, greatly. 2. Once, at once, continuously. ஒருகாலேகூட்டமாய்ப்போக. To go together in one continuous company. ஒருகாலே தேடிக் குவித்துக்கொண்டான். He has laid up a vast quantity. ஒருகாலேபேசுகிறானொன்றும்விளங்கவில்லை. He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. An unseasonable time. இவனிராத்திரியொருநேரத்தில்என்வீட்டுக்குவந் தான். He came last night to my house at an unseasonable hour. ஒருபடி, adv. Tolerably, ordinarily, ஒருவாறு. 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2.
