aḷi (p. 33) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become over-ripe, mellow, mature, அறக் கனிய. 2. To be over-boiled as rice, become as pap, குழைய. அளிய இகழ்தலிற்கோறலினிது. It is better to suffer death than disgrace. சோறளிந்துபோயிற்று. The rice is over-boiled, or reduced to pap by over-boiling. அளிந்தபழம், s. A fruit well ripened or over ripened. 31)

āṟṟl (p. 43) s. Strength, power, prowess, ability, வலிமை. 2. Energy, spirit, முயற்சி. 3. Abundance, much copiousness, மிகுதி. 4. Wisdom, knowledge of divine things, ஞானம். 5. Stability, fixedness, firmness, நிலையுடைமை. For the verbal meanings of this word, see under ஆற்று. v. ஆற்றுவாராற்றல் பசியாற்றல் அப்பசியை மாற்றுவா ராற்றலிற்பின். Though the fortitude with which those who practise austerities endure their hunger is very great, yet it is inferior to the energy of the generous who feed the hungry. ஆற்றல்கேடு, s. Great weakness from sickness, great fatigue, வலியழிவு. (c.) ஆற்றறுக்க, inf. To deprive one of power, reduce his strength, &c., desert him in time of need, வலிகெடுக்க. 69)

uṟuppu (p. 68) s. A limb, or member of the body, parts, features, அவயவம். 2. Body, உடல். 3. Part (of a whole) component part, member, subdivision, department, section, பங்கு. 4. Just proportion, symmetry, அங்கலட்சணம். 5. Abundance, மிகுதி. 6. Bough, மரக்கொம்பு. 7. Closeness, narrowness, நெருக்கம். 8. A copy of single letters set for a child to imitate, மேல்வரிச்ச ட்டம். 9. Title deed, registry, &c. of land, காணியாட்சிப்பத்திரம். அந்தக்காணிக்கோருறுப்புமில்லை. There is no security, title, &c. for that land. உறுப்படக்கி, s. A tortoise, a turtle --from the contraction of its limbs, ஆமை; [ex உறுப்பு, et அடக்கி, from அடங்கு contraction.] உறுப்பணங்கெட்டவன். [prop. உ றுப்பினங்கெட்டவன்.] An ill-shaped, maimed, ugly person. 2. (Rott.) உறுப்பினங் கெட்டவன், A foolish, a witless fellow. உறுப்பற்றவன்--உறுப்புக்குறைந்த வன். An ill-formed, or deformed person, அவயவவீனன். 2. An ill-bred person. ஒழுக்கமில்லான். உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், s. The embryo. See எச்சம. உறுப்புக்குறைவிசேடம், s. [in rhetoric.] A species of the figure called விசேடம். உறுப்புத்தோல், s. A species of deer-skin which, according to the shasters, the Brahman should fasten to his sacred cord, நூலிற்கட்டியமான்றோல். உறுப்புநலனழிதல், v. noun. Decaying or withering--as the beauty of a female, on account of the absence of her lover, அங்கத்தழகுகெடுதல். உறுப்புமயக்கம், s. A prodigy, a monster, one whose limbs are redundant, defective, &c. See எச்சம். உறுப்புள்ளவன், s. A vigorous, well-formed man, அங்கலட்சணமுடையவன். 2. A man of enterprising character, qualified for business, திறமையுடையான். 3. A man of good conduct, அறத்துறுப்புடை யான். 4. A man of good manners, ஒழுக்கமுள்ளவன். காணிக்குறுப்புப்பண்ண, inf. To get a title deed passed for land. அகத்துறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts of virtue; they are eight in number. 1. ஐயப்படாமை, Freedom from doubt and uncertainty. 2. விருப்பின்மை, Liberation from the desires of the senses. 3. வெ றுப்பின்மை, Freedom from antipathy, prejudice, &c. 4. Exemption from illusion, confusion of mind, error, ignorance, &c. 5. பழியைநீக்கல், Freedom from evils. 6. அழி ந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், Restoring the ruined or apostate. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், Expounding or elucidating the nature of virtue. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, Great kindness, or benevolence to all sentient creatures. நூலுறுப்பு, s. One of the members or component parts of a treatise. மதிலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a fortification. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A jewel worn by bridegrooms upon their foreheads--a sign of the goddess இலக்குமி. செய்யுளுறுப்பு, s. The constituent parts or elements of poetry, as given in காரிகை, they are six, viz.: 1. எழுத்து, Letters forming thirteen classes. 2. அசை, Metrical syllables of two kinds. 3. சீர், Metrical feet of thirty kinds. (See. சீர்.) 4. தளை, Combination of feet one with another, of seven kinds. 5. அடி, Metrical lines determined by the number of feet of which they are composed, five kinds are given. 6. தொடை, Rhyme, forty-three species are enumerated. சீட்டினுறுப்பு, s. The style or different parts of a writ, or deed, &c. 5)

ulvm (p. 66) s. [prop. உலோபம்.] Reluctance, bashfulness, diffidence, &c., in eating with a stranger or in receiving favors. See உலவி for other meanings. கடன்கேட்கவுலவமாயிருக்கிறது. To be diffident in asking a loan. உலவக்காரன், s. [prop. உலோபக் காரன்.] A guest who is backward in eating, &c., பிறனில்லிற்கொஞ்சமாயுண்பவன். 7)

kṭṭai (p. 88) s. A block, a log, a small stump, a slab, a clump, குற்றி. 2. A post or stake to fasten an animal to, கடாவுமுளை. 3. Fire-wood, விறகு. 4. A short low dwarfish thing, thing grown short by use, worn off--as a pen, &c., தேய்ந்தது. 5. A lifeless body, உடல். 6. Defect, imperfection, inferiority, குறைவு. 7. The refuse or residuum of கேழ்வரகு, தினை and சாயவேர் root after pounding and sifting, திப்பி. 8. Roughness of the beard after shaving, மயிர் க்கட்டை. இந்தச்சீலையகலக்கட்டை. This cloth is narrow. இதுமுழக்கட்டையானசீலை. This cloth is deficient in length and breadth. அந்தமரத்திற்கிந்தமரங்கட்டை. This piece of timber is shorter than that. கல்வியிலவன்கட்டை. [prov.] He is deficient in learning. கட்டைகடாவ, inf. To fasten a splinter or pointed stick, &c. கட்டைக்காலி, s. [prov. vul.] A bear, கரடி--as short legged--and sometimes applied to women, cows, &c. கட்டைக்குரல், s. [prov.] A weak voice, கம்மினகுரல். கட்டைக்குருத்து, s. [prov.] The last tender leaf of a plantain which envelopes the sheath or blossom and shoots out a little before it. கட்டைநெருப்பு, s. Coal fire. கட்டைப்புத்தி, s. Shallow wit, weak intellect, stupidity, தடிப்புத்தி. கட்டையடிக்க, inf. To pass a stick through a plucked jack-fruit to ripen it, ஆப்படிக்க. 2. To hurt the foot against a stump by striking on it, காலிற்கட்டையிடற. 3. To drive a stake into the ground to tie animals to, முளைகடாவ. கட்டையன், s. (fem. கட்டைச்சி.) A short person, குறளன். கட்டைவாக்கு, s. Dimness in a precious stone, இரத்தினத்தின்மங்கலொளி. கட்டைவிரல், s. The thumb or great toe, காலின்பெருவிரல். கட்டைவைத்தல், v. noun. [prov.] Collecting the stones in the hand in the game of கொக்கான். 2. Gaining in the game of singing verses. See ஈற்றெழுத்துக்கவி. முகக்கட்டை--மோக்கட்டை-முகவாய்க்கட்டை--மோவாய்க்கட்டை, s. The chin. எள்ளுக்கட்டை--எட்கட்டை, s. The stubble or stumps of Indian sesamum. 42)

kṉvu (p. 102) s. A dream, கனா. 2. Sleep, நித்திரை. 3. Stupor, drowsiness, bewilderment, மயக்கம். கனவிலுங்காக்காய்மலந்தின்னக்காணும். The crow even dreams of feeding on excrement. கனவிலுந்தீங்குநினையான். He will not think evil even in his dreams. கனவிலும்பொய்சொல்லான். He will not falsify even in his dreams, he will not dream of falsifying. கனவிற்கண்டபொருள்கானலிற்கண்டபுனல். The substance of a dream is like the mirage of the arid desert. ஊமைகண்டகனவுபோல். Like the dreams of the dumb that cannot be disclosed-spoken of things improper or impossible to disclose. கனவின்பலன், s. The accomplishment of a dream. 2. The interpretation of a dream. கனவின்பலனைச்சொல்ல. To interpret dreams. கனவுகாண, inf. To dream. கனவுநிலையுரைத்தல், v. noun. The relation of dreams. கனவுநூல், s. A treatise which prescribes rules to interpret dreams. தீக்கனவு, s. A bad dream, either ominus or inauspicious in its character. நற்கனவு, s. A good dream. 45)

kukkil (p. 114) s. A bird, the jungle-cock, செம்போத்து. 2. [prop. குக்குலூ.] A fragrant gum-resin, bdellium. குக்கிலிற்கண்போல். As red as the eyes of a குக்கில் bird. குக்கிற்சூரணம், s. A kind of medicine prepared by stuffing a fowl with bdellium and then reducing it to a powder. 18)

kuttu (p. 121) கிறேன், குத்தினேன், வேன், குத்த, v. a. To punc ure, prick, penetrate; to bore, perforate, ஊசிமுதலியவற்றாற்குத்த. 2. To stab, to thrust, to pierce, ஈட்டிமுதலியவற் றாற்குத்த. 3. To pound in a mortar, to comminute, உலக்கையாற்குத்த. 4. To crack, to crush, smash, நெரிக்க. 5. To strike with the fist; to cuff, buffet, box, கையினாற்குத்த. 6. To sew through and through. குத்துக்கோல், s. A horse or ox goad. தாற்றுக்கோல். 2. A pike-staff, முட்கோல். குத்துமுள், s. A spur, குதிரைமுள். குத்துவாள். s. A dirk, a hand-dart or bayonet, உடைவாள். குத்தீட்டி, s. A poniard. குத்துவல்லையம், s. A hand-javelin--opposed to எறிவல்லையம். குத்தூசி, s. A kind of wooden needle, for roofing or hedging. அம்மைகுத்த, inf. To vaccinate. பச்சைகுத்த, inf. To tattoo; lit. to puncture and insert a blue dye. பல்லுக்குத்த, inf. To pick the teeth. மூக்குக்குத்த, inf. To perforate the nose. குத்திக்கொல்வோன், s. One who kills another by stabbing, an assassin. குத்துக்கொம்பு, s. [prov.] Perpendicular horns. குத்துக்கரணம், s. A somerset. நிலைகுத்த, inf. To be set in or fixed --as the eyes of one just breathing his last. சாந்துகுத்த, inf. To pound chunam or mortar. நெல்லுக்குத்த, inf. To pound paddy. பேன்குத்த, inf. To crack or crash lice. குரும்பைகுத்த, inf. [prov.] To pluck young cocoanuts, &c. அள்ளிக்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To give liquid food stintingly. 2. To drop a little water on plants, &c. குத்துவலி--குத்துக்குடைச்சல், v. noun. Throbbing or pinching pain, stitches. குத்திப்பேச, inf. To make a cutting remark. குத்தியள்ள, inf. To take up grain, &c., by thrusting the hands in perpendicularly. குத்தல், v. noun. Puncturing, pricking --as one of the eight kinds of impressions perceived by the sense of feeling. 2. Ramming; thrusting, stabbing, &c. குத்தார்க்கு, s. [local.] Withe, cord, &c., inserted in the hole of a குத்தூசி needle. குத்து, v. noun. Pounding in a mortar, உரலிற்குத்துகை. 2. A blow with the fist, a cuff, a buffet, a box, கைக்குத்து. 3. A thrust, a stab; a puncture, a prick, an incision, a goading, ஈட்டிமுதலியவற்றாற்கு த்துகை. 4. The peck of a stork, மூக்கினாற்கு த்துகை. 5. An acute, throbbing, twinging pain, ஓர்நோய். 6. A dot, a point, a tittle; a spot--commonly with a pointed instrument, புள்ளி. 7. A double handful of grain, &c., the hands being thrust in perpendicularly. 8. [prov.] A handful, ஓர் கையளவு. 9. Perpendicularity, steepness--as in செங்குத்து. குத்துண்டுபோவாய்--குத்துண்பாய். May you be stabbed--an imprecation. ஒருகுத்துச்சோறு. A double handful of boiled rice, with the hands thrust in perpendicularly. குத்துமி, s. Husk--as separated from rice by pounding. குத்துவெட்டு, s. Stabbing and maiming. --either in scuffles, robbery or war. 2. Dots and strokes--as erasures, பிழைபட் டதைக்கிறுக்கித்தள்ளல். குத்துப்பாடு, v. noun. Censuring or charging one with a fault; violent contention; lit. piercing, retortion. அந்தவேலைமேற்குத்துப்பாடுசொல்லுகிறான். He finds fault with the work. குத்துக்காயம், s. A wound by a stab; a stab. அடப்புக்குத்து, s. [prov.] Stabbing in the ribs, விலாக்குத்து. தலைக்குத்து--மண்டைக்குத்து, s. Piercing pain in the head; head-ache. முலைக்குத்து, s. Piercing pain in the breast. முலைக்குத்தைஅறியுமாசவலைப்பிள்ளை. Does the babe know the mother's breast-ache? குத்துண்ண, inf. To be beaten, pierced, stabbed, &c. குத்துப்பட. குத்துணி, s. One stabbed, குத்துண்ட வன். 2. A mean, vagabond, shameless fellow. குத்துப்பட்டுவிழ, inf. To fall, or drop down pierced. குத்துக்குநிற்க, inf. To stand on points, each urging his own reasons; to contend, to oppose-as rivals. 2. To haggle in dealing. குத்துகால்-குத்துக்கால், s. The uprights of a frame-as of a car; a piece of furniture, support, தாங்குகால். குத்துக்காலிட, inf. To sit or lie with bent legs; [ex குந்து.] குத்துக்கால்நாட்ட, inf. To fix or plant the uprights. குத்தாய்நிற்கிறமலை, s. A mountain standing perpendicularly. குத்துவிளக்கு, s. Standing lamp, a brass candlestick. குத்துக்கல்-குத்்தாங்கல், s. A perpendicular stone. குத்துக்கல்லாய்வைக்க, inf. To build with bricks set upon the edge. குத்துக்குளம்பு, s. The hoof of oxen, horse, &c., falling perpendicularly, not spreading-regarded as a good species for speed. குத்துப்பாறை, s. Small, perpendicular heaps of stones in the vicinity of a rock. 2. [local.] The horizontal part of a rock where women pound paddy. குத்துப்போர், s. The first layer of sheaves of corn in a stack, placed with the ears uppermost, நிறுத்திட்டமாய் வைக்குஞ் சூடு. 2. Boxing, fisticuffs, மற்போர். குத்துப்புள், s. [prov.] The place where the புள் stick falls perpendicularly in the கிட்டிபுள்ளு game. குத்தெனவீழ, inf. [prov.] To fall headlong, தலைகீழாய்விழ. 2. To fall in a perpendicular position, நிறுதிட்டமாய்விழ. செங்குத்தானமலை, s. A perpendicular hill; a precipice. மூங்கிற்குத்து, s. Small branching channels for irrigation, நீர்க்கா ற்சிறகு. 5. [prov.] The half of a palmyra leaf, பனைமடலிற்பாதி. 6. The leaf of a door or shutter, கதவுச்சிறகு. Compare சிறை. படைச்சிறகு. The wing of an army. (சிலப்.) மனுஷன்சிறகில்லாப்பறவை. Man is a wingless bird. சிறகில்லாப்பறவைபோல். Like a wingless bird, i. e., forlorn, destitute person. அவருடையசிறகுமுறிந்துபோயிற்று. His wings are broken, i. e., he has lost office or valuable help. சிறகடிக்க, inf. To flap the wing with force as fowls, or as birds commencing flight. சிறகாற்ற, inf. To flutter the wings as some birds after skimming through the air, to rest, as birds. (c.) சிறகுகட்டிப்பறக்க, inf. To go with great swiftness, (lit.) to take wings and fly. சிறகுக்கதவு, s. [prov.] A two leaved door. சிறகுக்குடில், s. [prov.] A small portable hut covered. சிறகுகோத--சிறகுளர, inf. To adjust the feathers with the beak. சிறகுமுளைக்க, inf. To shoot out feathers, to become fledged. 2. (fig.) To become of age, தகுந்தவயசுவர. சிறகுமுளைத்தார்பறவையுங்கற்றார். Those that become fledged (whose wings are grown) learn also to fly, i. e., those raised from a low condition assume airs. வாய்க்காற்சிறகு, s. A branch of a main channel in a garden. (Rare.) 17)

cottu (p. 211) s. Property, பொருள். 2. one's goods. lands, &c., உடைமை. (c.) 3. Blemish, defect, குறை. (See சொத் தை.) 4. (Tel.) A red colored paste in imitation of blood, உடலிற்பூசும்பசை. ஒருவன்சொத்துக்குநான்ஆசைப்படவில்லை. I do not covet another's possessions. சொத்துப்பூச, inf.To daub with red paste to excite compassion. சொத்துவெட்டாய்வெட்ட, inf. To cut with a blunt knife, or axe; to cut with insufficient strength; an impotent blow with a blunt axe. 4)

He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. (See மடக்கு, &c.) 2. Elegance of expression. 3. Correct pronunciation. 4. Empty politeness, mere professions of kindness, உபசாரவசனம். சொல்லழுத்தம், s. Emphasis,--Note. Strictly speaking there is no increased meaning given to a word in Tamil, by a stress laid upon it; this is done by intensitive particles. சொல்லறுதி, s. Decisiveness in selling, making an offer, striking a bargain, &c. சொல்லாட, inf. To utter words, speak, talk. (p.) (குறள். chap. 82.) சொல்லாதசொல், s. Improper, indecent, uncourteous, offensive language. 2. Things improper to be told, secrets, &c. சொல்லாளி, s. One faithful to his word. 2. An eloquent person. (c.) சொல்லானந்தம், s. Unlucky or inauspicious use of a word, as portending evil to the hero of the poem. சொல்லிணக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] The chapter on words; etymology. சொல்லின்முடிவினப்பொருள்முடித்தல், v. noun. Proper method of speaking, as of a teacher, barrister, &c., stating a question. சொல்வல்லபம், s. Power of language, ability of speech, eloquence. சொல்வழிகேட்க, inf. To be obedient. சொல்வளம், s. Fluency in words, readiness in speaking. 2. Copiousness of language. சொல்வண்மை, s. Eloquence, power of language. 2. Emphasis. 3. Distinctness of language. சொல்விளம்பி, appel. n.
