aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

irā (p. 49) s. Night. See இரவு. இராக்கண்பகற்கண்விழிததுத்தேட. To get a living, property, &c., by working day and night. இராப்பகலாப்பிரயாசப்பட்டும் பிரயோசனமொன்று மில்லை. I labored day and night but gained nothing. இராவில்நடந்துவிட்டான். He slipt away taking advantage of the night. 2. He travelled by night. இராக்கதிர், s. The moon, சந்திரன். இராக்காய்ச்சல், s. Fever occurring only by night. இராக்காலம், s. Night-time. இராத்தங்க, inf. To pass the night, tarry or lodge a night. See தங்கு. இராப்பகல், s. Night and day. இராப்பாடு--இராமாறு, s. Nighttime. 2. adv. iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. They will remain here long. அதுமெய்யென்றிருந்தேன். I thought it was true. அவனிருந்தாகிறதென்ன? அவனிருந்தும்பயனெ ன்ன? Of what use is he? இருக்கை, v. noun. Sitting, உட் கார்ந்திருக்கை. 2. A seat, ஆசனம். 3. Being, a state, or condition of being--chiefly applicable to the human species, இருப்பு. 4. s. (p.) Residence, dwelling, situation, இருப்பிடம். 5. A town, village, ஊர்ப் பொது. இருப்பு, v. noun. Sitting, mode of sitting--as of ascetics, &c., இருக்கை. 2. Being, condition state of being--chiefly of the human species, நிலை. 3. s. Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. The subsiding of swelling, &c. from the head to the extremities, விக்கமிறங்கல். இறவு, v. noun. Lapse, passage, a place of descent, செல்கை. 5)

iḷkku (p. 56) கிறேன், இளக்கினேன், வே ன், இளக்க, v. a. To relax, slacken, relax a spring, &c., to loosen a rope, &c., to soften, mollify, cause another to yield, to work on one's feelings, to cause to relent, move the heart, appease, conciliate; to soften or moisten the throat, chest, &c.--as with liquids, fruits, conserves, இளகச்செய்ய. கையையிளக்கிவிட்டான். He gave liberally. வயிற்றையிளக்க, inf. To relax the bowels by cathartics. 2. To relieve the bowels by discharging their contents. 4)

eṟi (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எறிய, v. a. To throw, cast, fling, eject, discharge, emit, எறிய. 2. To pierce with a weapon, stab, cast so as to strike, குத்த. 3. To reject (as advice), cast off, cast away, throw away, தள்ள. 4. To slap. clap the hands, beat a drum, strike a bell, அறைய. 5. To toss, cast up waves--as the sea, அலை வீச. 6. To cut off, sunder, cut with a sword, வெட்ட. 7. v. n. To rise, roll over-as waves, அலையடிக்க. எறிசுடர்வாளால். With the ray-emitting sword. எறிசொல்லாச்சொல்லுதல். (ஸ்காந்.) எறிகடல்--எறிதிரைக்கடல், s. The wave-throwing sea, the billowing ocean. எறிகாலி, s. A kicking cow, உதை காற்பசு. எறிகால், s. A violent wind, பெருங் காற்று. (p.) எறிசக்கரம், s. The discus weapon, எறியுஞ்சக்கரம். எறிந்துபோட, inf. To cast, throw. 2. To reject a person, thing, advice, &c., to treat with disrespect. எறிந்துபோட்டாற்போலேபேசினான். He spoke contemptuously. எறிந்துவிட, inf. To cast off, reject. 2. To sow seed. எறிபடை--எறியாயுதம், s. A missile weapon. எறிமணி, s. A large circular metal plate for striking the hours, also used as a cymbal in a temple in daily worship, &c., சேமக்கலம். எறிமுத்து, s. Chicken pox, haub in pox, மாரிமுத்து. எறியீட்டி--எறிவல்லையம், s. A dart or lance--as a missile weapon, சவளம். எறிவலையம்--எறிவளையம், s. The discus weapon, சக்கராயுதம். வித்தெறிய, inf. To sow seed. எறி, v. noun. Throwing, a cast, எறிகை. 2. [prov.] A sarcasm, irony, a hint, allusion, insinuation, innuendo, குறிப்பாகச்சொல்லுகை. ஓரெறியெறிந்துவிட்டான். He threw out a hint, an insinuation. அதற்கோரெறியெறிந்துவைக்கவேண்டும். You must give a hint, throw in a word, &c., bearing on the object, take the first step toward it. எறிவு, v. noun. Throwing, casting. எறி, க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To shine brilliantly--as the sun; to emit rays; to glitter as jewels, ஒளிசெய்ய. இழைசுடரெறிந்தலானும். By the brightness of the jewels that blazed around. (நைட.) கதிரெறிக்குநன்மணி. Glittering precious gems. (நைட.) நல்லவெயிலெறிக்கிறது. The sun is burning. மேகம்மின்னெறிப்ப. While the clouds emit lightning-எறிப்பு, v. noun. Shining, brightness, glitter, splendor, பிரகாசம். 2. ēṟṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏற்றினேன், வேன், ஏற்ற, v. a. To raise, hoist, lift up, எழுப்ப. 2. to load a cart, &c.; to ship; to put upon a shelf, &c., set a load on one's head, set up, pile up, stow, பாரமேற்ற. 3. To put in, cause to enter, insert, drive in--as a nail, உள்ளேற்ற. 4. (p.) To teach, instruct, உ ணர்த்த. மச்சிலேற்றியேணியைவாங்கிவிட்டான். He has put me in the loft, and taken away the ladder; i. e. he has induced me to engage in the business and then deserted me. நிறைந்ததண்ணளியினனென்பாரதனைக்குடைமேலேற் றிமுழுமதிமுக்குடையென்றார். he said, the triple, full-moon-like umbrellas--thus transferring the benignant qualities of the possessor to the umbrella. ஐ. The diphthong ai, the ninth vowel, ஒன்பதாமுயிர். It may be written for அய் or vice versa. In the beginning and middle of a word, when followed by ச, ஞ், or ய, ஐ is sometimes substituted for அ--as அரைசன் for அரசன்; மைஞ்சு for மஞ்சு; ஆலையம் for ஆலயம்; மையல் for மயல். Words beginning with ஐ often take அய் instead--as அய்ய ன் for ஐயன்; அய்யோ for ஐயோ, &c. 2. The form of the second or accusative case, இரண் டனுருபு--as அவனை, him. 3. A termination of the second pers. sing. முன்னிலையொருமைவி குதி--as பெரியை, thou art great; வந்தனை, thou art come. 4. A termination of nouns chiefly feminine, பெயர்விகுதி--as தெரிவை, a woman; தந்தை, a father. 5. An expletive இதையதின்மேலேற்றிச்சொல்லலாம். This is applicable to that. தன்வருத்தத்தைமாலைப்பொழுதின்மேலேற்றி. Ascribing her sufferings to the evening twilight. குற்றத்தையென்மேலேற்றப்பார்தான். He sought to fix the blame on me. ஏற்றிப்போட--ஏற்றிவிட inf. To transport, to export goods. ஏற்றுதுறை, s. Place of exportation or embarkation, துறைமுகம். ஏற்றுமதி, s. Export. 2. Cargo. ஏற்றுமதிச்செலவு, s. Shipping expenses. ஏற்றுமதிபண்ண, inf. To export a cargo. விளக்கேற்ற, inf. To set up, to place a lamp, to light a candle. குடியேற்ற, inf. oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He insists on (going, having, &c.), he is firmly resolved. ஒருகாலும். Never. ஒருகாலுஞ்செய்யான். He never does it, he never will do it, he never can do it. ஒருகாலுமில்லை. He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. To do all at once, to finish the whole. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாம்வாங்க. To receive altogether. ஒருகாற்கண்டசீராயிருக்க. To be unchangeable. ஒருகாற்செய்தவனிருகாற்செய்வான். He who has done so once, may do it again. இன்னமொருகால். Again, once more. மாற்றானுமொருகாலிதஞ்சொல்லுகிறான். Even one's foe may sometimes speak to one's advantage. ஒருகிடை, v. noun. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. Close union, combination between two persons, taking another's part, ஒருசேர்க்கை. ஒருகை, s. (fig.) Party, union, conjunction, combination, ஒருவகுப்பு, lit. one hand. அவர்களொருகையாயிருக்கிறார்கள். The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. kẕl (p. 98) --கழலு, கிறது, கழன்றது, கழ லும், கழல, v. n. To become loose--as a fastening, a nail, a shoe, a handle, a lock, a leaf, hair, knot, a part of any mechanism; to be unhinged, to slip off, slough off-as a snake's skin; to become extricated, disentangled, நெகிழ்ந்துபோக. 2.
